Stop MySQL 4; Remove it; Install MySQL 5+ version Questions

I just got a Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon (64-bit) at my workplace (woohoo!).
The IT dept. at my work migrated my earlier Mac contents over to it, including the version of MySQL 4.? on the older Mac. I want to remove that older version of MySQL and install version 5.0.8.1 (or whatever is the stable version that should have come with my new computer). I don't have any tables or data on the old version as I am just learning how to do all this, so I am not worried about losing data.
My plan is to stop the MySQL 4. Remove it from the computer using terminal commands and then download MacPorts and use it to install MySQL 5.
I ran the command and got the response as follows:
"sudo /Library/StartupItems/MySQLCOM/MySQLCOM stop
Password:
Stopping MySQL database server"
My questions are:
1. How do I know if it really is stopped? Shouldn't it say "MySQL stopped" or something?
2. Does it matter if it isn't stop when I remove it?
3. Is using MacPorts a good way to go to accomplish the new install?
Thanks for any help you can give me with this.
Best,
Shelley

Thanks baltwo. I actually tried doing that but I still came up with the version 4 of MySQL. I have two hard drives and I partitioned one of them into a Time Machine area and a second system area. When I installed from the CD's into the second system partition, it did not install any version of MySQL.
So I renamed my version 4 MySQL directory to mysql_backup and removed the version 4. Then I downloaded mysql-5.1.47-osx10.6-x86_64.dmg and installed it. It is now running and I will start the process of assigning passwords and securing it. I did this with the help of Charlie Minow in the Technologies section for Unix.
My thanks to both of you for your help!
Best,
Shelley

    what are the steps in deleting in add remove to install a clean version of itunes/quicktime?
    What has to go, in order, like itunes-quicktime-mobile me, or?

    There are two part when installing WebEnt.. The first one is the web server part where it installs the fortecgi.exe or other web server components. This should be installed where the web server is going to be running. This is usually not you development server. The second part is the http library and web designer part. This should be installed on the development server. The http library need to go through a install of its own to make it part of the central environment. After that all the developers will have access to the http library and all they will need to do is install the Web desinger part.
    Hope this helps.

    I cannot burn cds from itunes. Every time I open itunes i get a message indicating i need to reinstall itunes. I have already done so but it's not working. I still cant burn cds. Does anybody know how i can fix this? My windows media player burns cds just fine.

    I am having this same issue with Windows XP. The exact message that I get everytime that I open iTunes is :

I have deleted and reinstalled iTunes three times. I also have a problem with iTunes randomly opening itself.

  • Installing Mysql on OS 10.6.8 issues

    Hi,
    Following Marc Liyanage upgrade instructions ( I was running mysql 5.0.21 before) , I recently tried to install mysql-5.1.48-osx10.6-x86 on my imac intel Core 2 Duo, running OS X.6.8 without success. I have read a lot of articles on mysql and a lot of forums, tried a lot of terminal commands but  still no luck.
    I know nothing about terminal. I can read for instance from http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/assigning-passwords.html:
    "mysql> CREATE USER 'jeffrey'@'localhost' -> IDENTIFIED BY 'mypass';"
    I don't know what to do: how could  I create that prompt 'mysql>'? . I would need a step by step instructions.
    I have activated the mysql dmg file and installed mysql preference pane and MYSQLCOM startup item as well.
    I rebooted my mac et opened Mysql preferences: Mysql server was running !
    Now, I think I got a permission issue. I do not know where and how I could set a new user and  password.
    Here are a few terminal commands and their results:
    1.

    Hi etresoft,
    Following your tips in "Installing MySQL on Lion" I've created a launch config file like you did.
    I tried in a terminal window and it worked:
    I also sent "sudo launchctl unload -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.mysql.mysql.plist" and it worked too.
    I made a backup of my actual my.cnf file and created a new one exactly like you did.
    I feel very stupid.
    I tried many commands in a terminal window to create a new user and password unsuccessfully.
    I want to show here a few samples with their results.
    Here, I'm sending the mysql command you showed in you answer:
    Macintosh:bin benassis$ /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql
    ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'benassis'@'localhost' (using password: NO)
    I read and tired many commands In the following article:http://dev.mysql.com/tech-resources/articles/mysql_intro.html#SECTION0006000000.
    This article don't explain how we can the following prompt (%>) they show in this article (I know this prompt is showed in the terminal when mysql is waiting a command, but...):
    %>mysql [options] [database]
    I tried many times with no success...
    Here are a few samples of others attempts, yesterday night and this morning:
    Macintosh:bin benassis$ mysql

  • Installing MySQL

    Hi Everyone,
    Somebody tell me how to install MySQl in RHEL 5.3. I tried using following command:
    yum install mysql* -y
    but it interrupted installation with some library error.

    but it interrupted installation with some library error.You need to provide us with the exact error if you expect to get any help. However, you could be more specific:
    # yum install mysql-server That will install MySQL Server, assuming your RHEL server is configured correctly to receive updates from RHN.

  • I want to re-install an older version of Flash Player but...

    I hope this is the right place to ask this question...
    I have a new dual processor pentium laptop and I upgraded to Flash V10.1 a couple of days ago. One web site I access regularly has now slowed right down and the video is unwatchable. My CPU meter runs at over 70% so I simply wanted to uninstall V10.1 and re-install V9. For whatever reason (I don't know if it is laptop, Win7 or Adobe), I am prevented from loading the older version. An Adobe window pops up and says that this (V9) is not the latest version, stops the install and points me back to the Adobe site to download the latest version. I have followed all of the guides to ensure proper uninstallation of V10.1. All very frustrating!
    Can anyone help - please?
    Thanks
    Ian

    OK, here I am replying to myself but perhaps others may gain from this solution. Remember, this original post was "how to stop Adobe preventing me from installing an older version and forcing me to take the latest version...". I just wanted to re-install an older version to prevent big CPU usage and stuttering video. Well, this is what fixed it for me an allowed me to install Adobe Flash V9...
    Assuming you have properly uninstalled Adobe Flash Player v10.n, you need to remove a folder and files from your registry. If you are unhappy to do this, then ask an expert - the registry is not somewhere you want to get lost in. I am also assuming you have the correct system permissions, Anway this is what I did:
    1. Go to start button and find (and run) REGEDIT.EXE
    2. Rather than give you a specific path to follow, it is best to simply use REGEDIT to find the folder by clicking "Edit" then "Find".
    3. You are looking for a folder called "SafeVersions".
    4. When you find it, it may show a number of safe versions (previous loads of the player).
    5. From the left window pane, right click on the aforementioned folder then click "Delete"
    6. Respond to any prompts you might get, like, "do you want to do this..." etc.
    7. Close down all applications in the normal manner and reboot.
    8. When restarted, go back on line and download the V9 (or whatever version you want). You'll know its a good 'un as it loads in a fraction of the time.
    9. Go back to your web page or whatever and, hey presto, everything is back to what it was before that hungry V10.n was uploaded.
    Hope that helps, it might be nice if the Adobe uninstaller deleted this registry entry, but it doesn't - or at least in Win7 on my PC, it didn't.
    Let me know it the above works for you.
    Thanks and good luck

  • How to install MySQL 5 and remove default install

    Hi all,
    I have some problems to make MySQL 5 works fine on Mac OS X server.
    I have installed the package (http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/5.0.html) but a instance of the old mysql still running.
    Can someone explain me how to remove the default install and make the new one works?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Mac OS X Server

    "pwd in directory /usr/local/mysql return /usr/local/mysql"
    I didn't really address this in my previous post, but this could be a problem. This seems to indicate that there is an actual directory named mysql in /usr/local. That shouldn't be the case. If it's empty, you should remove it and replace it with a symbolic link to /usr/local/mysql-standard-5.0.16-osx10.3-powerpc (assuming that's the version you have installed).
    To create this link, cd to /usr/local and enter:
    ln -s /usr/local/mysql-standard-5.0.16-osx10.3-powerpc mysql
    Or you may want to run the installer again. I would hope that the installer would not fail without giving you an error, and since creating this link is not necessary for the installation, it probably just ignored it, but the presence of the directory would have prevented it from creating the link, so it could have interfered with the normal operation of the installer.
    Normally when you install MySQL it installs into the /usr/local directory, creating a folder with the full name of the version, e.g. "mysql-standard-5.0.16-osx10.3-powerpc" in the case of the current version. It then creates a symbolic link to that directory called "mysql" in the /usr/local directory. That's why, normally, if you cd to /usr/local/mysql and issue pwd it should give you the full path to the current MySQL installation directory.
    The beauty of this system is that it leaves your current installation intact, so if you need to back out, because some of your applications are not compatible with the new version, you only need to re-point that symbolic link to point back to the old version.
    It also allows you to transfer your data very easily. Even if you forget to extract the data folder from the old version before you installed the new one, your data is still there, safe and sound. (That's why I've been recommending leaving that folder alone until you sort out the problems with the installation of the new version.)

  • Help!  I'm trying to install mysql....and FAILING!

    I am trying to install mysql, but the instructions that the Lynda.com course on PHP Essential Training are for a previous version of OS X (10.4, I believe) and I am lost and tied up in knot and frustrated beyond all belief.
    Is there a set of SIMPLE but accurate instructions that even your grandmother could follow ANYWHERE on the web that can help me?
    First problem
    From what I can tell, it is in the in the /usr/local/mysql/bin folder (all of this is Greek to me) and I simply cannot modify the path (successfully) to point to it.
    Second problem
    Also, when i go to the /usrlocal/mysql/bin folder and type ./mysqladmin -u root password mynewpassword it tells me that access is denied.
    I am sure that there are more problems along the way for me. I am grappling in the dark with Linux/UNIX or what ever it is called.
    So, again, my question is:
    Is there a set of SIMPLE but accurate instructions that even your grandmother could follow ANYWHERE on the web that can help me?

    pforkes,
    Mamp is great, but if you wanna just install MySQL without all the other stuff, try following these step-by-stop instructions here for installing MySQL on OSX 10.6

    69 # MASTER_USER=<user>, MASTER_PASSWORD=<password> ;

    78 #
    79 # OR
    80 #
    81 # 2) Set the variables below. However, in case you choose this method, then
    82 # start replication for the first time (even unsuccessfully, for example
    83 # if you mistyped the password in master-password and the slave fails to
    84 # connect), the slave will create a master.info file, and any later
    85 # change in this file to the variables' values below will be ignored and
    86 # overridden by the content of the master.info file, unless you shutdown
    87 # the slave server, delete master.info and restart the slaver server.
    88 # For that reason, you may want to leave the lines below untouched
    89 # (commented) and instead use CHANGE MASTER TO (see above)
    90 #

  • Cannot Re-Install MySql on 10.8.x

    I use MySql with MailSteward Pro; I did a clean OS X install a few weeks back and am trying to get back up and running. Basically I followed the steps found here, to move my MailSteward database to the new volume:
    http://mailsteward.com/nickstek/?p=22
    I was never able to set permissions properly, and, after a time decided to delete MySql and start over. I did so using the following steps:
    sudo rm /usr/local/mysql
    sudo rm -rf /usr/local/mysql*
    sudo rm -rf /Library/StartupItems/MySQLCOM
    sudo rm -rf /Library/PreferencePanes/My*
    rm -rf ~/Library/PreferencePanes/My*
    sudo rm -rf /Library/Receipts/mysql*
    sudo rm -rf /Library/Receipts/MySQL*
    And using your text editor of choice:
    Edit /etc/hostconfig and remove the line MYSQLCOM=-YES-
    If you still cannot install or run a different version of MySQL, you might have to issue one last command in the Terminal2:
    sudo rm -rf /var/db/receipts/com.mysql.mysql*
    Now, when I reinstall from the DMG package, I get the error message that the MySql Database Server installation was not found. Running 'mysqladmin' from terminal results in an error stating that the command was not found. I have tried to run the installer package again but get these errors:
    Jan 16 13:55:14 Stephens-MacBook-Pro.local installd[5941]: PackageKit: ----- Begin install -----

    Jan 16 13:55:28 Stephens-MacBook-Pro.local Installer[5934]: 'Install Failed' UI displayed message:'The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.'.
    Can anyone help me get this re-installed and up and running properly ? Thanks!

    I got the same problem when re-installing mysql-5.1.65-osx10.6-x86_64 and was struggling for awhile. Then I switched to install the latest version, which is mysql-5.1.68 and that worked!
    But I thought this might be something related to the quarantine of MacOS. I have got a message from my /var/log/system.log:
    Mar 22 02:25:04 Hochi-Air kernel[0]: exec of /Volumes/mysql-5.1.65-osx10.6-x86_64/mysql-5.1.65-osx10.6-x86_64.pkg/Contents/R esources/preflight denied since it was quarantined by Google\x20Chrome and created without user consent, qtn-flags was 0x00000007
    I have googled it but there was no luck for me to clear the quarantine flag for the preflight file by issuing:
    xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Volumes/mysql-5.1.65-osx10.6-x86_64/mysql-5.1.65-osx10.6-x86_64.pkg/Contents/R esources/preflight
    Maybe copying the installation .pkg file would solve this.

  • Installing mysql:sudo launchctl: command not found

    After several days of reading about:
    Installation of MySQL
    Enabling apache server
    And getting phpMyAdmin up
    I have run into an obstacle.  See error message below **
    I am Running:
    'Mountain lion' , 'Mac OS X 10.8.3'
    I have downloaded:
    MySQL version. Mac OS X 10.7. (X86, 64-bit), DMG Archive.
    Within this forum I found a very brief but helpful 'user tip' post.
    Link1.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3082
    Where this sentence lead me to believe I could use the version listed above.
    There is NO version for 10.8
    " Download MySQL from a local mirror. You want the Mac OS X ver. 10.6 (x86, 64-bit), DMG Archive. At the time of writing this User Tip, the current version is 5.5.34. By the time you read this, there may be a newer version to use instead. Open the archive mysql-5.5.34-osx10.6-x86_64.dmg. "
    Following the instructions on link1, and all went well until
    I am getting this error message when I type the following command at the terminal prompt:
    **Error message
    -bash: launchctl: command not found.
    1. I cd - changed directories all the way back up the file structure to type the  command
    to see if it needed to be run someplace special but the same error came up.
    2. I searched here on this forum and on the web.
    3. I went back and checked over every step and everything that i typed.
    4. I ended up typing the instructions below by hand
    because somewhere I read that a copy/paste may insert invisible characters.
    Excerpt from link1.
    sudo vi /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.mysql.mysql.plist
    Use the following content:
    <plist version="1.0">
      <dict>
        <key>KeepAlive</key>
        <true/>
        <key>Label</key>
        <string>com.mysql.mysqld</string>
        <key>ProgramArguments</key>
        <array>
        <string>/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe</string>
        <string>--user=mysql</string>
        </array>
      </dict>
    </plist>
    Can someone please explain what I am missing ?
    Why is this command
    -bash: launchctl: command not found.
    That is launch c t lowercase L not number 1
    An added note.
    The following link also had a very nice set of instructions but unlike link1, this link uses the
    'Preference pane' and 'startup item' which link1 discourages because it causes problems down the road.
    I would rather use the command line and do not want to give up on this method.
    Link2.

    Now that I am going head strong with this project, I hope that my issue can be resolved quickly with this community
    so I don't loose my momentum.
    Thanks a lot.

    1. You are really a nice person.  Thank you.  I really want to understand these file structures.  Sorry my posts are lengthy.
    Thank you for taking the time to look at the original User Tip.
    2. I hope that you do not end this thread when I tell you that I actually have gotten php running.  These concepts are still very important to me.
    I am not up to the point where I am using mySQL so that may end up another troubleshooting problem.
    3. Last week and this I have been exploring my files with terminal by cd-ing  up and down; using sudo nano to open the file to see what is in there.
    I have included some things that may be useful since you have a much better idea about how these paths work.
    4. If you have a chance - Can you elaborate.  I understand a PATH.  What to you mean when you say PATH environmental variable.
    I think of a variable in the computer programmer syntax sense.
    5. I also cannot find a .profile file anywhere. See the below.... where I found something....
    4. Searching like crazy for the load executable.  I cannot find it yet.  I thought that it might be with the  other commands in /bin
    below are some exploratory commands I am running and things I find of interest.
    I use ls -la to display 'all' files. I use -la to list hidden files. those that start with a dotFileName.
    /user/local/mysql/bin
    there is NO load executable here.
    I looked around for 'load'
    macBookPro: /shortname$  ls
    cd bin
    ls -la
    lots of commands:  launchctl  mkdir  pwd  echo ....   i thought that 'load' should live here.
    cd etc
    ls -la
    has:apache2  my.conf  named.conf  passwd paths php.ini sudoes nanorc
    apache2 empty - title: new buffer
    sudoers  i have questions about this but not a priority now.
    nanorc
    php.ini
    my.conf
    name.conf
    passwd
    paths
    sudo nano paths
    /usr/bin
    /bin
    /usr/sbin
    /sbin
    /usr/local/bin
    I did not find the .profile file. what I have found is the below which references the .profile for sh(1)
    I am unable to interpret the below file/code - well maybe a little.
    cd etc
    ls -la
    sudo nano profile
    # System-wide .profile for sh(1)
    if [ -x /usr/libexec/path_helper ]; then
            eval `/usr/libexec/path_helper -s`
    fi
    if [ "${BASH-no}" != "no" ]; then
            [ -r /etc/bashrc ] && . /etc/bashrc
    fi
    Here is
    /usr/sbin
    sudo nano apachectl
    the following is the code in apachectl
    I see 'run launchctl load ....'
    LAUNCHCTL="/bin/launchctl"
    LAUNCHD_JOB="/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.apache.httpd.plist"
    run_launchctl() {
        if [ $UID != 0 ]; then

  • Installing MySQL on OS 10.8.2

    List members,
       I want to install a MySQL database server on my Intel Mac running OS 10.8.2. I've installed Xcode. I can see the DMG installer for MYSQL 5.6.12 in Xcode.
    Unfortunately I can't progress further; the DMG installer won't open. I get an Apple error message say that non-App Store software can't be installed. Would appreciate any thoughts. Thank you in  advance.

    Hi Simon,
    Thanks for posting!
    Firstly, I suggest you could try how to connect to local MySQL database from Azure. Similar issue
    https://getsatisfaction.com/cleardb/topics/windows_azure_websites_connetion_to_mysql_database for your reference.
    Secondly, What's your local machine? Is  it a server or just a PC? If it is a PC for you dev, I guess it could not be accessed from internet. You need use the server and open the 3306 port.
    >> “tried to link the resource but the option to link an existing mysql database is greyed out.”
    Base on my experience, when we create website on azure portal, azure will create a free database which is 20 M. If you want to use MySQL on azure, you may need use Clear DB. It is used to connect to a MySQL database that created in Azure (http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/store-php-create-mysql-database/)

  • How do i install mysql on windows server 2012 r2 using powershell(automate)??

    i have a requirement of installing the mysql server with one click deployment using power shell by passing the parameters needed into the mysql console. can i achieve that ?
    can  anyone help me in doing that?
    thanks in advance.
    Suresh Gaddam

    Hi Suresh,
    This forum is for SCOM related questions, it seems like that you are asking for powershell script to install Mysql. From my point of view, I don't think that using powershell to install Mysql is an easy way, as it is hard to say whether Powershell can get
    information from Mysql install console with some API.
    In addition, for further assistance, please contact MySQL forum and Powershell forum.
    Thanks for your understanding!
