Stop Numbers from Automatically Checking for Updates?

Is there a way to do this?
Every iLife app (except GarageBand) has a "Check for updates automatically" preference that can be disabled in order to prevent the "update is available" dialog box from appearing during the program's launch. However, none of the iWork apps seem to have such a preference.
Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions!

The message "A Numbers update is available. Would you like to open Software Update?" appears when you launch an outdated version of Numbers while you're connected to the Internet.
In fact, a similar message appears for each of the iWork and iLife apps given the aforementioned circumstances. In iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD, however, it can be permanently disabled in the app's preferences. Not so with GarageBand, Keynote, Numbers, or Pages.
While "just ignore the dialog" may be an acceptable solution for experienced users, the teachers and primary school students for whom these machines are being configured will "freak out" if they encounter anything out of the ordinary. Thus, it would be considerably better to prevent the message from occurring in the first place than to tell hundreds of novice users how to handle it.

Thanks for the response. In the time since my previous post, I've come across a thread in the Pages '08 forum in which a poster provided a script to reset SFLDefaultsNextUpdateCheck (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1379420). While this adds to the suspicion of SFLDefaultsNextUpdateCheck, I've been unable to confirm that such a method is effective. Did either of your "guesses" work?
This situation sort of reminds me of a trick that was used back in Mac OS 9 to keep the "Upgrade to QuickTime Pro" dialog box from appearing. In that case, you simply needed to set the system date to some arbitrary point in the future (e.g., 01/01/2020), open QuickTime Player, tell the "Upgrade to QuickTime Pro" dialog box to remind you later, quit QuickTime Player, and reset the system back to the correct date. Do you think that would work here? I'd check myself, but I'm not sure how you can tell the value to which SFLDefaultsNextUpdateCheck has been set.

  • Stop GarageBand from Automatically Checking for Updates?

Is there a way to do this?
Every other iLife app has a preference that you can uncheck to prevent the "automatic update check" annoyance.
Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions!

From GarageBand. When opening it for the first time, I received a dialog box stating "A GarageBand update is available." So, I checked "Don't tell me about the GarageBand 4.1.1 update again." and clicked "Don't Update Now". Upon subsequent launches, however, I've encountered the same dialog box. It doesn't occur every time and seems to happen only when GarageBand hasn't been run in the past 24 hours.
Similar dialog boxes appeared at the inaugural launches of the other iLife apps (i.e., iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, and iWeb) and haven't reappeared. In each case, I checked "Don't tell me about the ... update again." and clicked "Don't Update Now". However, I also disabled "Check for ... updates automatically" in each of these app's preferences.

  • SQL Developer 2.1 Disable Automatically Check for Updates bug?

Unchecking the "Automatically Check for Updates" under Preferences -> Extensions in version 1.5.5 to disables the prompting for proxy ID and password at SQL Developer startup. Unfortunately I am trying version 2.1 on Windows XP and unchecking this option under Extensions is having no affect. It is still prompting for proxy ID and password every time I start SQL Developer. This is extremely annoying.
Is this a known bug with 2.1?
    Mike

I get that prompt for a Proxy as well. If I can download SQL Developer 2.1 without a Proxy then why am I prompted for one when I am checking for updates?!?
I have to uncheck the Proxy and uncheck check for Automatic Updates.
Even if I tried to use the default proxy it does not exist (I tried pinging emeacache.uk.oracle.com and it just times out and there is no DNS record either).
I have been able to finally get a few updates but still have problems with getting the JTDS and MySQL updates. I am wondering if there is a problem with Oracle's websites that are trying to be contacted to download these updates. I think Oracle's Check for Updates Wizard still has bugs that need fixing. I have had these problems not just with this new 2.1 but with previous versions as well.
I hope Oracle fixes their buggy Check for Updates Wizard or the web sites that are being contacted for the updates because this is very frustrating.

  • How do I turn off the automatic check for update on opening Firefox? I want to turn off that "what's new" page.

How do I turn off that automatic update that always brings me to the "what's new" web page? It was interesting the first time, but now it is just an irritation. I can check for updates on my own, so I want to turn off this feature. It just started up when I upgraded to Firefox 5. I can't find a place to stop it from checking and bringing me to that web page. Also, I can't stop it from checking add-ons every single time I open the browser.

did you check the suggestions mentioned in the article i posted in my previous post ??

  • Dead from a "check for updates"

After I synched an hour ago I got a message that there were updates for applications on my BB.  I chose to update by BB with those updates.  20 minutes later, there's an error msg on my laptop.... no longer have it and my BB screen is white with some sort "do not" circle around an application icon with a 507 number below it.  I can't access my phone or anything and now the BB Mgr doesn't recognize that it's connected.
Anyone have experience with this?  I though I was doing something simple and now I'm dead in the water.  Help!

    Hi,
Yeah I had figured that the updates were for the device OS.
Here's the problem. You updated software and somewhere the installation
became corrupt or didn't load correctly. Your device basically has no software
    loaded.
Ordinarily you would go to the vendors site and download the device OS to your PC.
You would then use the application loader in desktop software to restore the device.
The problem is I do not see any software for the 8900 on the website from AT&T.
I suggest you contact AT&T in the morning and have them help you with the download.
Here is the website, please double check that I didn't miss it.
    Thanks,

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Automatic check for update.

Over time I have searched through many of Adobe's help files on Actionscript, frequently coming across other versions existing elsewhere. The information I collected had often been out of date.
Could we have an option in a PDF to check back to its source URL to see if the file version has been updated?
It should also be able to follow URL redirection, so that if the document has been moved it can still be found.
If so, all versions of that help file would lead back to just one version of the information.

In a practical sense no - that's why people use DRM. AcroJS within a document cannot easily communicate with a remote server unless you apply extended rights using LiveCycle (so you can use the Net.SOAP functions). The Net.HTTP functions can only be run from a folder-level script. It's possible to hack a basic request-response cycle by submitting a null form to a server and parsing the FDF/XFDF response but it'll mess up the document and there's a limit to what you can do before the security message bar kicks in.
It's possible for a SWF rich media annotation to talk to the Web but the user will be prompted to allow the connection and of course it won't work on mobiles or non-Adobe applications.
However you obtain the version check data, a PDF cannot redirect itself within a browser window - on the desktop you can open a document and close another one, but cannot do an in-place switch.
Proof of concept is easy enough but it's not something you could deploy in a production environment. LiveCycle DRM handles all this effortlessly, and can revoke old versions and direct users to replacements; but it's expensive.

    Hi Britt,
Try formatting the cells where this is to be entered as Text before entering the information. The default formatting is Automatic, which means that Numbers goes with what it determines to be an 'appropriate' format for the data you enter.

  • 10.1.3: How to disable ANOYING automatic search for updates?

We are experiencing very anoying (meant-to-be-a-feature) performance problems when JDev is automatically looking for updates. It happens periodically (not sure... maybe every 30 min?). Is there a way to disable this?? Please please help.

The automatic Check for Updates only occurs on startup of JDev. Apart from that, the only reason JDev would check for updates is if you manuall select Tools > Check for Updates. So, it's likely the that periodic "check" that you see is coming from somewhere else. Have you installed any extensions?
The J-Dide.cfu.autoskip=true would be set as a command line argument when running the product, as in:
    jdevw.exe -J-Dide.cfu.autoskip=true

  • Adobearm.exe error Checking for updates

I'm getting this error when Adobe Reader 10.1.1 checks for updates.  Since it checks automatically this pops up on it's own when you view a PDF.  It will also do it if you check for updates using the help menu.  Running Windows 7 Enterprise x64.  It's also happening on at least one other computer in our organization.  I've searched all over, but I'm not finding much on it.  I've even gone so far as to run procmon to see if I can see where it's trying to read that it's getting an access denied, but that didn't return anything helpful.  Any help is appreciated.

    1.  adobearm.exe does exist in the location the error states.  Interesting it shows an older date on it.  Not sure it's getting uninstalled with reader each time.  maybe I should delete the arm folder manually when I uninstall and try to reinstall?
    2. it has a valid digital signature from Adobe.
    3. 1.5.5.0
    4. I am admin, but UAC is on.  I had also tried running reader as admin, but it made no difference.
    5. Doesn't matter if you open stand alone pdf or in browser.  You will get the error either way.  Without the help menu in the browser I can't manually check for updates, but it appears to check automatically because it will error on it's own when viewing an online pdf.
    6. Yes double-clicking on a file you get the error.  It's not immediate though.  There is a delay before it automatically checks for updates it looks like.  Once it does you get the error.  I assume it's the checking for updates automatically that causes this anyway since it's the same error when I manually check for updates.  I supposed it could be a different problem that produces the same error.
    7. originally I installed it via the enterprise download package.  I customize the installer using "Adobe Customization Wizard X".  When I discovered the problem I rebuilt the package and reinstalled.  Didn't help.  I then reinstalled using the default Enterprise package with no customization.  Didn't help.  I then installed off the website.  Didn't help.

  • How to disable checking for updates on Mac Silverlight for enterprise environment

    Hi Guys,
We are trying to create a package for our enterprise environment to push the install of Silverlight for the Mac and have it not automatically check for updates.
What is the best way to do that?
I found the setting in the com.microsoft.silverlight.plist file that was in the user profile/library/preferences folder.
Is there a way to have this UpdateMode key set to the desired setting regardless of which user is logged onto the mac?
    Thanks.
    Aaron

I have zero experience of macs.
Can't you install Silverlight and the plugin for all users rather than a specific one?
I would guess/hope/expect there'd then be one plist file for everyone?

  • How to disable check for updates??

I ve to package a ctrlPrint 5.0.2.33 plugin to adobe incopy CS3. After installing that plugin exe , in adobe incopy first window, plugin will add two tabs called ctrl and ctrlPrint if we press ctrl tab than there is a feature called check for updates and i have to disable this update so pls suggest me how to do it ?  no reg entry ,no update reg ,no xlm file for update is there.

    Hi,
If you are referring to Help -> Check for Updates, I'm not certain if that is possible.
If you mean Tools -> Preferences -> Extensions, just uncheck the Automatically Check for Updates box. Doing that is standard procedure for improving the tool's launch performance.
