Stop Photo Compression on Sync?

I just recently purchased iPad 2. I downloaded a bunch of photos that I wanted to use as wallpaper and loaded them into aperture and synced them to the iPad. Upon doing so I noticed that the images seemed to have been re-compressed and they look just awful on the iPad. Especially when blown up to wallpaper size.
I noticed however that if I were to save an image from mail or the web to the camera roll the compression doesn't happen. That said I don't want to have to track down all these images again and save them manually one by one if it can be avoided.
Is this a bug? Can it be avoided? Do I need to do resizing on my own first (they were downloaded as iPad wallpaper so I'd assume theyre the right sizes)? Does iPhoto have the same issue or is it because I'm using aperture?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you sync photos they will be 'optimised' by iTunes, and you can't switch the process off.  I'm not entirely sure what the optimisation does apart from re-sizing photos if their dimensions are larger than (I think) 2304 by 1536 (and I think that applies to Aperture, iPhoto, or just folders)
Photos that get onto the iPad by other means are not optimised as they don't go through iTunes e.g. emails, websites, camera connection kit, or third-party iPad apps such as Simple Transfer which can copy photos to/from your computer via your wifi network.

Change the options on the Photos tab when the device is connected to iTunes, and on the device review your options under Settings > iCloud > Photos.

    Hi LoboCatholic,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are desscribing. I am not certain that this will address your specific issue, but if you are having photo organization issues in iOS 8 on your new iPhone 6, you may find the following article helpful:

  • How do I stop mail compressing my photos?

How do I stop mail compressing my photos? I have set 'Actual Size' in Mail and still the photos are compressed to thumbnail size.
    I'm using Mavericks 10.9.2 on a 2011 iMac.

The best way is to use the Contextual menu application PhotoTool CM to losslessly rotate the photos before importing into iPhoto. Or use Xee, a free image editor with lossless rotation capability.
If your camera has the auto rotate feature turn it off and then follow the suggestion above before importing. That will rid iPhoto of the modified version rotated to the correct orientation.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

I need to change my sync options to stop photos being uploaded from my computer to my ipad air, how do i do this please?

If you want to remove all photos and not have them sync back to the iPad, with your iPad connected to your computer, while iTunes is running and with the iPad selected under the Devices icon at the top of the iTunes window, click on the Photos Tab and then uncheck the box next to Sync Photos From and click on Apply in the lower right corner of the iTunes window.

IPhone photos don't automatically sync to Facebook.
However, you may have allowed your Facebook photos to sync into your phone's photo app.
If you don't want the Facebook photos to appear in your photo albums, turn off the option to sync Facebook photos.

    Hi Ken,
Wow, I've logged into adobe and never seen your response until now.
I need to make the forums more of a daily stop I guess.
Thank you for your response, When I go to the Archives, it states I have none. In addition, previously when I'd tried to move items to the archive, they just disappeared
Currently my desktop is not connecting at all, Everytime I connect, it's states "We have now logged you out" and requests I login again.
    I have of course rebooted,
Gone into taskmanager, killed all the relevant threads,  tried again to login through the desktop, no luck, I'll have to uninstall it, make sure the threads are killed, then reboot it and then reinstall it, but I've not had the time to do that.
On another note, and just as a point of reference, myself, personally, I hate these "cloud" file repositories (not to be confused with adobe cloud services which I love) but the file repositories themselves imho, are a blackhole of resource usage when one doesn't/isn't using them,
Is there a way we can use it more of a "ftp" sort of thing, when I want to I can  put files there?  There is no way to "Download" the repository, no way to download the folders.. only individual files and then it takes I think three different steps before the download starts.. I find this very inhibiting.  Just an fyi. for what it's worth.
Please, feel free to contact me,
I'm on g+ chat [email protected]

  • Is there a way to use iCloud Photo Library WITHOUT syncing?

The idea I had of iCloud Photo Library was that I could upload my pictures to it and access them from all my devices WITHOUT having to sync them.
At the end of every month, I move all the photos from my phone to my computer. It helps me save space and keep things tidy. With iCloud Library, I want to access all my photos, but it looks like I must sync them through iCloud, and then to save space in my phone, I have to select "optimise space for iPhone". Is there any way to use iCloud Photo Library as a mere cloud storage? I don't want to keep photos on my phone, neither full resolution or "optimised" ones. I want to put them on iCloud, and when I need them, then I want my phone to download them.
I realise I could use other cloud storage providers for this, but I have always liked Apple's integration with their own services, so if possible, I would like to use iCloud Photo Library without syncing to my devices. Just keep my stuff in iCloud, and when I tap it, download it.

    www.icloud.com.
Doesn't work well in IE8 (9 I would think is ok), but is fine in the current version of Chrome.

How do I stop my Contacts from syncing with my Google Contacts?

Deselect this option under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes followed by selecting Apply. Bookmarks will no longer be synced between the two.

How do I get rid of these photos? I have read other questions that say to plug the iPod into the computer and like un-sync it, but I downloaded the new iTunes and it doesnt have a photos tab. Does anyone know how to solve my problem? Please and Thank You, Megan!

It sounds like the iPodf is seening the iTunes libary as a new libary.

  • Photos no longer sync from PC to iPhone

I recently upgraded my PC from XP to Vista. Now, whenever my iPhone syncs and gets to pictures, it hangs. Everything else syncs - videos, music, apps, etc. But photos won't sync. I even left it going at it for three hours, but it still said "iPhone syncing" without showing a transfer of files.
Can anyone help me with this?

Apple really ought to formally add this to their troubleshooting page. It's ridiculous that I had to spend a week looking for an answer so simple.

  • Sync issue - I have an iPhone 5 running latest software 7.1.1. Since the update I noticed that my photos weren't syncing in My Photo Stream album on my pc.

I have an iPhone 5 running latest software 7.1.1. Since the update I noticed that my photos weren't syncing in My Photo Stream album on my pc. The photos taken do show up in My Photo Stream folder on my iphone and ipad. I have googled and noticed that this is quite a widespread problem.
I must stress that I have never had a problem with photos from my iPhone not syncing with my pc before. This is the first time I have encountered this problem, so this has nothing to do with my Wi-Fi or my pc because nothing has changed in that respect. My pc's operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
6 days ago I took steps to try and kick start syncing again by uninstalling the iCloud panel on my pc.
    1. Uninstalled the iCloud panel.
    2. I saved all the photos that were in my My Photo Stream on my pc to another folder.
    3. Deleted the My Photo Stream folder.
    4. Rebooted.
    5. Downloaded  iCloud Control Panel 3.1 for Windows from support Apple site and installed on my pc.
    6. Logged in to iCloud, set up syncing.
    7. Rebooted.
I noticed that there is now a folder on my pc called iCloud Photos with subfolders which one is My Photo Stream as well as my share iPhone folders.
The photos are still not syncing.
I have only 34 photos in My Photo Stream on my pc.
I have deliberately taken random photos over the last few days since the actions of uninstalling and re installing the iCloud panel.
Out of a dozen which I took yesterday, only one has showed up in My Photo Stream on my pc. Only 6 photos out of  fifty photos which I have taken since uninstalling/reinstalling the iCloud panel have appeared in My Photo Stream on my pc.
My iPhone shows that I have 980 photos in My Photo Stream so it shows that something is not quite right with syncing to the pc.
Hopefully someone has an answer or a fix?
    Thanks for reading.

    Hi Amish,
I should have mentioned that I have signed out of the iCloud Control Panel several times and no syncing occurs.
Thanks for your response anyway. I appreciate your feedback.

  • Photos won't sync: "Cannot be displayed on your iPod"

Many of my photos will no longer sync from iTunes (Aperture photos) on my Macbook to my iPod Touch. For example, out of 250 photos, only 2 sync.
    iTunes says:
"Some of your photos, including the photo "xxxx.jpg", were not copied
to the iPod "Leo's iPod Touch" because they cannot be displayed on your iPod."
These same photos synced fine from iPhoto, but awhile ago I switched to Aperture. I also recently installed Lion.
Any idea what can be done to rectify this? Thanks.

Fixed, by deleting the iPod Photo Cache folders in both the iPhoto and Aperture libraries.
