Stop Reader from Opening pdfs in Firefox?

I have had substantial problems with Adobe Reader too numerous to detail here.  Suffice it to say that, as a result, I have been forced to turn to an alternative pdf reader.  Even though all web browser options in Adobe Reader prefs are disabled, the other software is set as my defauld pdf viewer, and  disable the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox, Adobe Reader continues to open pdfs from within Firefox.  (Disabling the plugin works for the current session, but resets when Firefox is restarted.)
I like using Reader sometimes but unless I can figure out a way to prevent it from opening pdfs in Firefox, I will uninstall it entirely as my only option.  Does anybody have a suggestion as to how I can prevent Reader from opening documents in Firefox?
Thanks for your help.

If you are clicking on links which point to PDFs on the web, then Reader will be used to render the PDF using your default browser.
If you do not wish to view the PDFs on the browser, and want to view them via the application please do the following:
1. Launch Adobe Reader and goto Edit > Preferences
2. Navigate to the Internet panel on the left, and uncheck the option to "Diaplay PDF in browser"
3. Close Adobe Reader and try to launch a PDF link again. You will now be prompted to Save the PDF to your local disk which can then be opened via the application.
Hope this helps

  • How do I disable Adobe Reader from opening pdfs?

how do I disable Adobe Reader from opening pdfs in Safari? I tried unchecking the box for opening pdfs in browser under Adobe's Internet prefs, but that didn't seem to work.

    Hello-
I actually saw a solution to this earlier today. To disable PDF viewing in safari, first quit safari, then open terminal, and type in this command:
defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool YES
To re-enable PDF viewing in safari simply open the terminal, and change the "YES" in the command above to a "NO"
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I stop PSE from opening PDF files?

I want to use Adobe Reader to open PDF files.  Whenever I click a PDF file to open, the computer opens it with PSE.  I am using Windows XP and Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0.  How do I switch the computer to use Adobe Reader instead of Adobe Photoshop Elements to open PDF files?

  • Adobe Reader stops me from opening PDF files I want to read.  I trashed Adobe Reader but I still can't get into some PDF's?

I can't understand when I try to open PDFs on a website, and even after trashing Adobe Reader, I am not allowed to read PDFs on web sites?

Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.

  • 'stopped' status when opening pdf in Firefox

We're having problems opening the pdf's on our site in Firefox with Adobe Reader.  More than 50% of the time the pdf will not open and the status bar shows 'stopped'.  It's intermittent, the same file can fail to load 3 times but work on the fourth attempt.  This issue is specific to Adobe Reader and Firefox (affecting all versions tested).
    Example file: http://www.realtor.org/files/research/localmarket/2010/q1/lmr_ny_rochester.pdf
I've done some googling and it appears it's not an uncommon problem, but there aren't any identified solutions other than using a different pdf reader.  Is there a known fix?  Is there a way we can get more information on what specifically is going wrong (verbose adobe reader logfile, etc.)?

It's an issue that's being reported by many of our users.  Currently it's been confirmed on XP through Win7 and Reader 7 and 9.  The kicker is that it's only a problem with Adobe Reader displaying the pdf in-browser.
If using Adobe Reader but not viewing in-browser it works.
If using another pdf reader (PDF Xchange Viewer, etc.) to view in-browser it works.
I confirmed the issue testing on fresh Win7 VM with current versions of Firefox and Reader (so no Firefox extensions, Virus protection, etc.) using the pdf link in my first post (among others).
    http://www.realtor.org/files/research/localmarket/2010/q1/lmr_ny_rochester.pdf
Can I at least get Adobe Reader to produce some verbose logging to help troubleshoot the issue?

  • How can I stop Reader from opening dozens of attachments?

Starting this morning, when I went to open a .pdf on my Macbook Pro, Reader opened dozens of attachments from many other emails in my inbox, going back weeks.  I've re-booted and tried again, but same as before.  If I use "Preview" on the Mac, it doesn't do that.  What have I done wrong?  Thanks in advance for any good suggestions!

You can have infinite tabs opening if you have selected Firefox as the application to handle a file if you get an ''Open with'' download window.<br />
Firefox should not be selected as the application to handle a file and you have to remove the action that is associated with that file type.<br />
You can delete [http://kb.mozillazine.org/mimeTypes.rdf mimeTypes.rdf] in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Profile Folder] to reset all actions or set the offending action in Tools > Options > Applications to 'Always Ask'<br />
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions ("File handling in Firefox 3 and SeaMonkey 2" and "Reset Download Actions")

  • How can I stop Safari from opening new windows unless I want them?

Since Safari 5.02, there is no box to check in the General Preferences to stop Safari from opening a new window when I click on a link. My expectation is to only go to a new window when I want to do it. Most of my searches go down a rabbit hole and I just want to go backwards without closing page after new open page (Same problem with Tabs. I don't want new Tabs all the time either. In fact, the only time I really care about multiple open Tabs or Windows is when I need more than one Window open for data comparison or something like that...)
This is an incredibly annoying new behavior of Safari that I want to shut off. I have 20 windows open in the Window list right now. (I regularly shut off Safari to clear up all the useless abandoned windows.) Firefox doesn't do this, but I prefer Safari.
I tried to search this one, but maybe am not framing the question properly. See lots of discussion of forcing new tabs, but that is not what I am looking for....Can anyone help me?

    Thanks Baltwo,
I will try it, but I don't want new pages in tabs either. I simply don't want the link to open in a new page or tab unless I ask for one. My initial trial has google links opening in new tabs. Why can't I just go down the paths on the same page like the old days? Especially after I find what I want, I will go somewhere else.
With your recommendation, I think that instead of pages open, I will have an abundance of tabs?
Guess I am getting inflexible in my old age. If this is the only option, it is an "improvement" that I don't like yet.
    Firefox doesn't do it.

  • Opening pdf in Firefox

Ok...so my wife's a scrapbooker and opens alot of PDF's online via FireFox to view designs. Last night she clicks on a link to open a pdf and for some reason chose to save it rather than open it. And then she selected to "Do this automatically for files like this from now on". Well, that was a mistake. Now when we click on links to open pdf's (and other file types, I presume) it always prompts us to save the file and does not give us the chance to open it. How in the world do I go back to opening rather than saving? I've used Finder, found a local pdf file, set things up to always use Adobe Reader to open pdf files but that doesn't do the trick.
    HELP! PLEASE!
    Thanks!
    Jim

Here's the answer, provided by a teacher friend that works with my wife:
Make sure you have closed Firefox
Go to Hard drive click on the house that has your name by it
    Click on Library
    Click on Application Support
    Click on Firefox folder
    Click on profiles folder
    Click on iiosuk5g.default folder
    Find the mimeType.rdf file
Drag it to the trash (It regenerates itself when you
    relaunch Firefox)
    Relaunch Firefox
    It should now be reset.

  • Can I close all layers? or even better, stop illustrator from opening all layers when I open a file?

I just installed cs6, and when I open files in Illustrator, it opens all of the layers which contain sublayers.  It does this even if all the top-level layers were closed during the previous save.  The files I work with have a large layer-structure, so re-closing the top-level layers every time I open a file wastes a lot of my time.  Can I close all layers at once, or better yet, can I stop Illustrator from opening all of the layers automatically when I load a file?
If not, then WHY on earth not?  I can't be the only one who opens and closes large files with lots of layers and sub-layers...
    Thanks for your help.
Edit: I also am noticing this problem is even worse in cs6, because openning and closing individual layers plays a little animation of rotating the triangular arrow before the layer which, cute as it may be, just makes the task of individually closing up all my layers that much more tedious.  Can I turn off that little animation of the triangular arrow when opening and closing layers?

You can save it as a pdf and when you open that in AI the layers will not be opened even if they have sublayers.
Not true. Does the same nonsense an .AI file does. Saved as a .PDF, closed Layers/subgroups get opened.
    And no one cares!
I do. Every other Adobe program with a layering sceme seems to be able to remember that you saved a file with all layers and subs closed. But not this one.
Maybe someone from the AI development team should ask someone from the Photoshop team how they've managed it.....for decades.

Have you tried running Repair Permissions?

I clicked on iMessage on my Macbook Pro today for the first time, and now NOTES keeps opening up every 5 seconds, with a new note.  I cannot stop it from opening. If I close it or force close, it opens again in 5 seconds.  I can't get rid of it.  I have tried to clear out the iMessage settings I had put in, and I've tried to adjust the Accounts to not include notes to synch.  But, Notes will not stop.  It opens a new note, and even if you ignore it, it assumes preference every 5 seconds, and the Mac is impossible to use.

Do you have any Boot Camp or other secondary partitions set up on your system? If so then try running a disk verification routine (chkdsk, etc.) in Windows to repair the disk. While I've not heard of it happening recently, in the past errors in these partitions have resulted in stubborn ghost files appearing in OS X.

  • Can't stop applications from opening automatically at login

A few months ago I tried the "open at login" feature for 4 of the applications in my dock. I have decided it is more of a hassle than it's worth and unchecked "open at login." That didn't stop them from opening automatically. I went into Accounts and made sure the "Login Items" tab was empty. That also didn't work. I even added the programs into the tab, restarted and deleted them. I searched the Apple website and read that you can bypass applications launching automatically by holding shift at the blue screen on startup and then again after typing the password. I set the computer to not login automatically and hold shift every time I start the computer up. I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem and what they did about it. Is there a way to stop them from opening without having to log in every time? Thank you.

go to the directory homedirectory/library/preferences and delete the files loginwindow.plist and com.apple.loginitems.plist. Then log out/in normally. nothing should start up by itself.
