Stop requiring system restart after update

I turn on my machine. Acrobat says there's an update available. I let it update. Then I get a dialog saying:
"You must restart the system before using Acrobat. Click Restart Now to restart automatically".
Come on! It's 2010... Requiring system restart after update is sooo 1990's...
Or put another way, I cannot remember when another app required system restart after updating. Only Acrobat does this nowadays. Please, stop this madness!

While Adobe doesn't deliberately try to annoy users,
it does not deliberately try to remove documented annoyances either.
There are still bugs in Acrobat 9 which have been documented for years, and no one seems interested to fix them.
Serious flaws ... like crashes and corruption of PDF files so they cannot be saved.  Hours of work lost.
Every 3rd time I select the Crop icon, I can expect Acrobat 9.4.5 to crash.
There is no excuse for an app to require full reboot on update.   C'mon, spend some time at
Microsoft Tech Support and figure it out.   Acrobat is also the last application I can remember
requiring reboot.
I turn off Auto Update on both Acrobat and Windows.

  • Mac won't restart after updating to OS X Mountain Lion

Mac won't restart after updating to OS X Mountain Lion. Please help?

Like what happens?  Is it just spinning?
If you've waited sufficiently long (say 10 minutes) you could just hit the power button which will do the trick.  A little more gentle would be to open a terminal window (if you can) and type 'sudo reboot' (without the quotes) and enter your password when it asks.  That will do it too.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

  • Installed latest iOS on my iPad mini, it got stuck while restarting after update. It is still in that stage even after 7 hours.

installed latest iOS on my iPad mini, it got stuck while restarting after update. It is still in that stage even after 7 hours.

Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
       1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
       2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
                  * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
      3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
charge, and then start with step 2 again.
      4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
      5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
      6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

  • MBP 17" will not restart after updating Java... why?

MBP 17" will not restart after updating Java...why?
It would actually try to restart for about 10-15 seconds but would quit and then shut down. Tried using P_R_Command_Options but that too failed and again it just shut down. Tried using D at startup which ran a test of the hard drive. No issues there which tells me there's a software problem.
    Can any one help?

    Disk Utility suggest reformating
Reformatting is not a Recovery Aid. When Disk Utility suggests reformatting, it is because it considers your drive unsalvageable. Yes, you lose all the data on the drive when you reformat.
And yes, Mac OS X Extended, journaled is the method you will need for a Mac OS X Boot drive.
You should also consider buying a replacement drive to have on hand the next time this internal drive gives you the slightest bit of trouble. Possibly an external enclosure to put it in as well. and it would not hurt to go ahead and Install Mac OS X on it and try booting from it, to make sure it is ready.
And make sure your Backups are current, as the next time that internal drive screws up you may get no warning whatsoever.

  • Help...MacBook Restarts and Restarts After update ...won't stop

Hello, I just ran the Leopard 10.5.1 software update on my MacBook and it restarted and now it just keeps restarting and makes the sound and it won't stop. Does anyone know what's going on?

That just happened to me. Help. I just did a regular software update, which included a combined operating system update, a QuickTime update and a security update. I restarted after the download as instructed, and now the computer keeps restarting. The little dial keeps spinning and the Apple restart bell goes off, but it never finishes. Then after a few minutes, it restarts itself again.
I've got a big college project in that computer and it's due Monday. Please someone help.

  • System Crash after updating Boot Camp beta 1.3 to 1.4

After dowloading the latest BootCamp version 1.4, I double clicked on the icon and the Installation started. I have an option to upgrade the BootCamp currently installed in my system which is version 1.3. And so I clicked on the "Upgrade" button, I waited for about five minutes but then nothing happened. So clicked on the "Go Back" button and just cancelled the installation. I restarted the system and then the screen just went black and the BSD something prompt appeared. I restarted several times but the same Black screen with the BSD prompt happened. I called up support and was able to recover my system after reinstalling the entire OS. The support guy told me they already got several calls with the same system crash problem after updating the BootCamp. Just wondering what just happened?

I just bought the new Mac OS Leopard, it already comes with built-in Boot Camp.

  • Restarting after update - Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart in one minute?

This is a worrying one - I updated Reader today and restarted after it promted me. Soon after the pc rebooted I got an error message that said "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart in one minute". After it restarted, I checked the event logs and came up with this error: "A critical system process, C:\Windows\system32\lsass.exe, failed with status code 1.  The machine must now be restarted.". This has never happened before and I want to know if the Reader update did anything bad. I restarted several times afterwards and it didn't happen again, but still.. it's worrying me. Is this a common error after the update or am I missing something? Running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I understand that you are worried.
I have a very similar setup as yours, and nothing happened after the Reader 10.1.3 update.  The one difference is that the update did not prompt me to restart Windows.  (It did prompt me on several other [XP] systems.)
Let's wait and see if anyone else encountered a similar problem.

  • Lockup on first restart after updating OS and wireless was left on.

    Hi everyone,
I was wondering if there were any steps to take if you experience a lockup right after updating and restarting your Mac Book Pro to 10.4.6 starting from 10.4.5 with wireless previously configured and left on ?
    Thanks !

I deploy a lot of X230 laptops and have been dealing with this issue.  Since I cannot find any information about the cause and how to fix it I started looking more into it.  The "No internet access" yellow icon starts appearing after installing items from System Update.  So, with a new X230 I applied all Windows Update (which installed without issues) before going into System Update.  After doing the Critical and most of the Rcommended (don't care for Access Connections) I proceeded to the Optional updates which I installed one at a time.  When I installed the WiFi Driver for Intel cards 7(64), Version 15.6.1 and rebooted the system the yellow icon appeared with the "No internet connection" status.  Everything still works though, I can still connect to the internet.  Doing a driver rollback does not fix the problem.  I did a system restore from a restore point prior the last System Update and the yellow icon went away.  finished the rest of the Optional updates except the WiFi driver and all is well.  This is what I did and went through, not sure if it will be the same for everybody.  But Lenovo needs to look into that driver version.

  • No System Startup after Update 10.4.10 - Help?

    Hi,
after updating to 10.4.10 Mac OS X was not completely startup. It was hanging at the end of the blue loading bar every time.
I was running the Hardware Test on the OS X Installation DVD and the harddrive testprogramm. Everything was ok. I could start the system in the "Safe Mode". I read that a new system installation could fix startup problems. So I reinstalled OS X. Everything was running OK. Then I updated to 10.4.10 again and I have the same Problem again!
I read about a quicktime component problem, so I reinstalled Quicktime in the "Safe Mode" like they were writing, but nothing helps.
After the Update to 10.4.9 my system seemed to be slower, but now it does not even startup. It always hangs at the end of the blue loading bar.
    My System:
    MacMini - 1,83 GHz (Intel)
    1 GB-RAM
    SuperDrive
    AirPort
    80 GB Harddrive
    Any ideas??
    Thanks for help.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!!
I could start the system in the "Safe Mode".
Well try a normal startup, that fails, then start up in Safe Mode and immediately use the Console application (in /Applications/Utilities) to look at your system.log. Go back to where it says "reboot by <user>" and look at the lines immediately before that. Post some of them here.
If it starts OK in safe mode, but not otherwise, then there may be a problem with one or more of the items listed in Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?.
Since you don't get as far as being able to log in, it is unlikely that Login Items are a problem. Equally it is not likely to be the font caches mentioned since they are user specific. I would be inclined to start with the fonts in /Library/Fonts, and then work backwards in the list.
See these User Tips for more about fonts:

    1. Open Disk Utility and repair permissions
    2. Open Finder, press Option key, select Go > Library, open Preferences folder and delete com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    3. Go to System Preferences > Users and Groups, create an user and check if the issue appears
    4. Backup the data and press Command and R keys in boot. Open Disk Utility, select the drive, erase it and install Mountain Lion. When Mountain Lion asks for the backup, only move your user files

  • Get Windows Temporary Profile on restart after updating Firefox on Windows 7

This happened a month ago when going from 15 to 15.0.1 also. And again now when upgrading to 16.0.1.
I have no idea how it fixed itself last time as I tried everything over the course of multiple days last time (many reboots, restarts, etc.). Ended up creating two additional accounts, just had the one originally, in order to copy all my files and start over last time. Then, seemingly at random, the original profile worked in which I noticed two instances of FF, 15 and 15.0.1, in the control panel so tried re-installing FF 15.0.1, even though the manifest listed it as successful, which fixed it.
Now the exact thing is happening again after upgrading to 16.0.1. It was a successful install, verified before rebooting via update history and closing FF and opening a couple of times, and it then only listing 16.0.1 in the control panel. But, on the first restart, Windows 7 goes into temporary profile mode again. I tried creating a second account again in hopes the first would magically work again, as I have no idea how I got back into the original profile the last time it happened, to no avail.
Can anyone help? I hate to give up on FF as I've been using it exclusively for years but I don't want to go through this a third time.
Also, what can I do to get back into my original profile so that I don't have to start from scratch yet again copying my files and recreating all my settings?

    Update.
After many logoffs, restarts and switching user from the temporary profile and the second user account, it randomly let me back in to my original profile again.
I literally did nothing to allow me access to it other than many of those attempts.
As soon as I was in my original account again, I immediately went to the control panel -> uninstall a program and verified, same as last time, that it listed two instances of FF (recall that it did NOT after I upgraded before the first restart and getting the temp profile). I opened up FF, 16.0.1, and downloaded it again from http://www.mozilla.org/products/download.html?product=firefox-16.0.1&os=win&lang=en-US
Installed that, even though it was already successfully installed according to FF. And just like last time, that removed the earlier instance of FF, 15.0.1, and all is back to normal. Verified by restarting multiple times and no longer getting a temp profile (exactly like last time which lasted for about three weeks until the 16.0.1 upgrade).
This never happened until 15.0.1 and now 2 for 2 with 16.0.1. What is going on that would yield a successful upgrade yet on Windows 7 first restart after is causing it to kick to a temporary profile (yet also fixed, if one gets lucky enough to get back their profile, re-installing it over fixes it until the next upgrade?)? Some file not being created/deleted on reboot that is confusing Windows when trying to load the user profile?
I'm willing to copy over my W7 user profile to a flash drive and Fedex it to the FF team if one can fix this. It is the most basic software setup that I can't imagine others aren't experiencing the same issues.
