Stop 'save as' opening new file?

I have been saving an illustrator CS3 file as PDF at various stages.  I have to make small changes to the .ai file and then save to PDF throughout the work.  The trouble is that the .ai file closes and the new pdf opens in its place.  This is a nuisance as I have to reopen the .ai file and a couple of times I found myself accidentally working on the PDF.
Can the original file be kept open and the pdf saved and not opened?
Thanks

Of course... ...thanks
I should of known - it's easy when you know how...

  • Preview.app new bug : stops opening new files

Starting a couple weeks ago, perhaps with my update to iLife 09 or perhaps related to a recent system update, Preview.app has a new bug for me.
If I open a few files (jpg, pdf, etc) with Preview.app, it will mysteriously stop opening new files. Double clicking the files in Finder, using Preview->Menu->File->Open, or any "open with..." functionality causes Preview to get the focus (come forward) but the file does not open.
I am not able to make it happen consistently with any set of files, but it is not any single file causing the problem. I've had this happen every day for the last couple weeks and it is now moved from annoyance to extreme annoyance.
If I close Preview.app and restart it, the same file that would not open will open fine. I have not been able to narrow this down, but I see this in Console:
    4/17/09 2:12:29 PM Fri Apr 17 Preview[11193] * -[NSCFArray insertObject:atIndex:]: attempt to insert nil
As I said, the main thing I've changed recently is installing iLife 09. I'll continue to try to create a replicatable test set, but so far it seems more mercurial than that
    Anyone else seeing this?

Well, let me describe it a different way. I do not believe there is any way permissions for the files I'm opening could have anything to do with this.
    1) I open a jpg with preview, leave preview.app running
    2) I go do something else
    3) I open a PDF in firefox, it opens preview with the pdf
    4) I go do something else
    5) I open a jpeg with preview
    6) I try to open another jpeg with preview and it does not open.
    7) No file of any sort, even the same file I opened in step 1 or 5 will now open in Preview. Preview.app is now completely unable to open new files.
Generally, I leave Preview.app running. This bug makes that completely non-functional. It also means I can't use preview.app to compare images side by side because it so often won't open the images after a dozen or so files get opened during its process-life.

  • Can't open new file - Where do I file photoshop bugs?

"Could not complete your request because of a program error."  popups up when I try and File -> Open.  My only work around has been to close and re-open photoshop, constantly.
2012 Mac Air OS, 10.10.2, Photoshop 2014.2.2 (20141204.r.310 x64). This did not happen before I updated photoshop.
** Where does one file bugs or feedback for photoshop? or does Adobe not care? **
I can't find a better location. I saw someone else posted a similar discussion questions Dec 30th, so obviously this is not being fixed.  I find not opening new files to be pretty major function regression. If I open like 10 files when I first open photoshop it's ok, but then when I forget I need one more file, I see this error, the programs only been open 15mins, I've barely done anything to trigger a program error! I have to close and reopen everything. Making a new file is possible.

If what you see were "a bug", everyone would see it.  If it's unique to you, especially if you have not yet deleted and recreated your Photoshop preferences, you cannot call it "a bug".
That error message suggests there may something wrong with your Photoshop install or some other fault on your system,
Don't cry wolf prematurely, lest Adobe really stops paying attention to you.
To re-create the preferences files for Photoshop, start the application while holding down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS). Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"
Note: If this process doesn't work for you while you're using a wireless (Bluetooth) keyboard, attach a wired keyboard and retry.
Important: If you re-create the preferences by deleting the Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings file, make sure that you only delete that file. If you delete the entire settings folder, you also delete any unsaved actions or presets.
Reinstalling Photoshop does not remove the preferences file. Before reinstalling Photoshop, re-create your preferences.
NEW Video! Julieanne Kost created a video that takes you through two ways of resetting your Photoshop preferences. The manual preference file removal method is between 0:00 - 5:05. The keyboard shortcut method is between 5:05 - 8:18. The video is located here.

  • PostScript request output is askng to save or open .zip file not .ps file

    Hello,
I have created a new simple customized report for PostScript testing, but once I run the request and view the output. It asks to save or open .zip file.
    Any Idea?

Please post the details of the application release, database version and OS.
I have created a new simple customized report for PostScript testing, but once I run the request and view the output. It asks to save or open .zip file. How did you create the report? Please mention the steps.
Is this a concurrent program? If yes, what if you download the output file from the server and open it on the client machine?
    Thanks,

  • Cannot save or open .ai files that's on a server.

    Hello everyone,
My office upgraded to CS4 few month ago, and I am having problem saving and opening AI files. It seems like a server problem but I'm not sure because my co-workers can save and open file without problem. We are using exact same computers with exact same settings.
I can save and open AI files no problem when they are saved on the computer that I used to create the file. However, when I try to save the file to the server, which is a computer on the same network, Illustrator gives me an error massage saying "This file may be read-only, or another user may have it open. Please save the document with different name or in a different folder." No one else has the file open (because I just made this file) and it is not read only. When I click on "OK" Illustrator creates a AI file that is 0 KB in the folder where I was trying to save. If I try to open this file, another error massage "The file 'test.ai' is in an unknown format and cannot be opened"
I can save files as EPS from Illustrator no problem (even on the server) and I can open them normally. All other formats such as, indd, psd, tiff etc. saves fine and I can open them too. Once in a while, Illustrator will not give ma any error code but they still save as 0KB. When I move the file from my computer to the server, the file is not 0KB but I can no longer open the file. It is really strange.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on? Please help. Thank you in advance.

If you do a search on Google i believe you will find links to pages that describe the problem and ffer a solution.
If on windows perhaps this is the problem
    http://www.techsupportforum.com/design-forum/graphic-design-digital-imaging-multimedia/409 713-adobe-illustrator-cant-save-file.html
of I do believe there is another issue as well.
I could not find it myself though I am certain there is a fix.
it might be a permissions problem.

  • PSE 12 Has stopped showing thumbnails for new files

PSE 12 has stopped showing thumbnails for new file imports. Have  Windows 8.1 update

In the PSE12 Organizer, the last files imported show an hourglass thumbnail. I am importing from the camera card. Other images have the correct thumbnail. I see the spinning icon on the lower bar showing it updating the catalog. Thank you for your assistance

  • Illustrator CS2 can't open new file with network printer installed

It seems that with my network printer set up I can't do much with Illustrator, I can't open new files and I can't print without opening up the printer setup menu in Windows.
Photoshop CS btw, I can't open it at all.
I take the network printer offline and everything is fine, except then I don't have a printer.
    Windows XP SP2
    Illustrator CS2 12.0.1
    Any fix for this?
    Thanks,
    David

Creating a Dummy Generic printer fixed the issues of opening a new file in Illustrator and being able to open PS at all.
However Illustrator is still taking several minutes to print something as simple as a test circle.
The menu I was referring to is Printers & Faxes under control panel, though I realized later that may not have had anything to do with it. It may have simply been coincidental timing. I opened the P&F window about 10 minutes after hitting print and just after opening P&F the print window popped up. It simply may have been taking 10 minutes for the print window to open.
With the network printer set up as the default printer if I try to open Photoshop a window opens but just stays a grey blank screen, no credits box, nothing. Then if after a few minutes I hit ctrl+alt+del it says Photoshop not responding.
What I was doing to take the printer offline was to completely delete the network printer from Printers & Faxes.
I'll see if they have an updated set of drivers, but I think I have the latest ones, as I updated them a month or so ago.
    Thanks,
    David

User with a paid CC acct, getting "Print.ai" is an unknown format' when trying to open new file. Computer was recently attacked by ransomeware and wonder if I need to re-install Creative cloud software....need help asap!!

First, ask in the forum for the program you are using
This forum is about the Cloud as a delivery process, not about using individual programs
If you start at the Forums Index https://forums.adobe.com/welcome
You will be able to select a forum for the specific Adobe product(s) you use
Click the "down arrow" symbol on the right (where it says All communities) to open the drop down list and scroll
Second, do a complete scan with a good anti-virus program to be sure your computer is clean... I use Norton, there are others

  • Time Machine has simply stopped backing up any new files. No items set to be excluded, No error messages.

I have a Macbook with OS X 10.6.8 and a 500GB external hard drive, which still has 208.5GB available. For some reason, Time Machine has simply stopped backing up any new files (documents, music, movies--anything). No items are set to be excluded from backups in Time Machine options except for the external hard drive itself. Also, no error messages appear, Time Machine seems to run just fine, but when I enter Time Machine, or look through the files on the hard drive, new files just aren't there. I am not very tech savvy, so I was not able to understand some of the answers people gave to similar questions on here. I did go to Pondini's website and followed as many troubleshooting instructions as I could understand (for example I did manage to do a full reset of Time Machine) but nothing changed. Do I just need to erase the entire backup drive and sart all over? If so, what will prevent this from happening again later on? Please help.

Your TM drive liekly stopped backing up because it hit a series of bad sectors on the drive, to eliminate this all new drives should be Disk Utility > Zero Erased (one step below 7x in Lion) before use.
Reducing bad sectors effect on hard drives
Diversify your backups with bootable clones and archives on DVD's etc so your prepared for anything, including using a PC.
only if you have too of course, but it happens, people just can't afford a Mac anymore.
Most commonly used backup methods explained
So make other backups, then Zero Erase teh TM drive and set it back up again and your problem should be resolved.
If not, then it's data corruption on your boot drive!
You'll know if it's data corruption on your boot drive, when you go to make the clone, it will hang too.

  • Stopped - Could not open temporary file... exiting

I have been using OS X Yosemite for over a month. I have been able to print to my Xerox Phaser 6120 and use my Macbook Pro with no problems until last night when I applied an update. At first I was getting an error that stated my optical photoconductor needed to be replaced, but the imaging unit is 90%.  Now after I print, the job spools to the print queue, and I get the an error that says "Stopped - Could not open temporary file...exiting".
I have reset my printer queues and added the printer. I have also turned everything off (computer, printer, and airport extreme base station) and restarted every thing. I have even tried repaired my disk permissions. The printer is attached via ethernet cable. The last thing I tried was to connect the printer directly via USB and attempt to print directly to the printer. I get the same error.
I checked the Xerox site, there is no updated driver for Yosemite.  But the printer was printing fine with Yosemite without an updated driver for at least a month.
I am out of troubleshooting ideas. Does anyone have an idea that I haven't tried?

    Hi -
I had the same problem but I got my Phaser 6120 to work.  What I did was this:
Instead of the Xerox Phaser 6120 driver (under "Use" in the Add Printer window) I used "Generic PostScript Printer" - and all seems well.  Also repair your permissions.  Hope this helps.
FWIW I contacted Xerox and asked about a driver, and the email back was basically the printer is EOL and nothing more will be done.

  • How do I change the default save location for new files in Pages back from iCloud to my Documents folder?

I just upgraded OSX to Mountain Lion and Pages to 4.2, and because OSX is syncing with my iCloud account, when I go to save a new file in Pages it defaults to try to save to my iCloud account rather than giving me the folder structure on my hard-drive that I prefer. It requires two extra steps to save to the proper place in my Documents folder on my hard drive.
Is there a way to reset the default so that when I go to save a new file, the folder structure opens to the last saved folder (like it does in other non-iCloud applications) rather than defaulting to my iCloud, and to do it without just removing documents from my iCloud account entirely?
I checked the Preferences for both Pages and iCloud and found nothing about this.

What I meant is turn off Documents and Data in iCloud in OS X. Keep it on on your iOS devices. iCloud will sync documents between the iOS devices and make them available on the iCloud web site, but it won't mess up iWorks' open and save dialog boxes. It also won't assume that you want all your documents in iCloud, which I think is undesirable anyway.
Keep iOS and OS X separate, and use the web site to move files between the two as necessary.
iOS iWork is different from OS X iWork. There are fewer fonts on an iOS device. iOS iWork programs have slightly different feature sets than OS X iWork programs, and the file formats are different. iCloud automatically converts the file format when necessary, but if you make a habit of saving things directly to iCloud, you are limited to the lowest common denominator between the two versions of iWorks. So why would anyone want iWork on the Mac to open and save documents on iCloud by default?
If you want to store files in the cloud and sync them on your Macs, SugarSync is a much better solution. It lets you choose your sync folders, it doesn't make you reorganize your files, it lets you sync all file types, it doesn't convert files to a different format and back, and it stores everything in the cloud, too. Just the simle act of saving a file backs it up and syncs it. I wouldn't live without it. iCloud is best with iTunes purchases and synchronizing Mac settings and iOS files; I woudln't live without it. The two make an unbeatable combination.
