Stop sign and Backlit keyboard

I was running my MBP on batteries and checked to turn the backlit keyboard down a notch, which it accepted. Then the "time remaining" on my menu clock went from black to red. I tried to turn the backlit keyboard up again, before and after reconnecting to the external power, and it doesn't move, it is off and there is a circle with a diagonal line below it (a stop sign).
I restarted. The keyboard preference has the "illuminate keyboard in low light conditions checked". I even tried to toggle it on and off.
Nothing happens
Thanks

What do you mean by the "Time remaining on my menu clock"?
I think he means the time remaining on his battery charge.

Did you move your MBP to a well-lit area while doing all this? The backlight only comes on when the ambient light sensor detects that it's dark enough. If it's still a problem, you may want to try resetting the SMC (KB article).

The computer (top / back of monitor) gets really hot within minutes.

    How old is the iMac?
With no backup, you have probably lost all your data.
Sounds like serious hardware problem for which you are going to have to take it to Apple for an estimate of repairs.

Thank you very much for your reply. I did what you advised command-I and at the bottom where it says Sharing and Permissions I am listed and "everyone" to read and write. I see no place to change anything to unlock the desktop to move the files around. Could you help some more?

  • Acer R13 Ghosting and Backlit Keyboard Noise - Return worthy?

Same stupid sound at night. Also cant disable that auto keyboard backlight disabler function, really annoying. Please fix that!Bios 1.09 core i5-5200 120gb ssd FullHD Acer R13 Windows 8.1Acer Aspire R7-371t-55XH

Hi, I bought an earlier R13 (Haswell i5, FHD screen) on sale. Thankfully, with the BIOS update the keyboard typing experience, while not perfect, is more than manageable for me so far. My two issues: 1) Upon setting up, I selected a darker color for the Windows menu background. When I switched to this, I notced a wide, fuzzy rectangular box-shaped area around the inside of the screen that was somewhat lighter in color, and two of the buttons on the screen left a ghost image within this shape while the system continued with setup. Worried about the ghosting issue noted elsewhere in this forum, I tried an image retention test found online and sure enough the checkerboard image stayed visible on the edges of the screen when I switched to grey. It returned to normal operations swiftly after that.  2) I have also experienced the high-pitched whine with the backlit keyboard on maximum. This is not audible on the lower setting or when it's off. It's very quiet, but nonetheless it's still there. Is this a common problem? Are there people out there who HAVE this issue but are okay with it? Given that the device is practically silent otherwise (that fan is darn near whisper level when it IS on), it's a minor but nonetheless present annoyance.
I can still return this unit - *should* I, and what's likely to happen if I don't?
I'm in the middle of evaluating the machine to see if it fits my needs. The form factor is amazing, and comiong from a home and workplace filled with Windows 7 machines Windows 8.1 was much easier to handle than I thought (and with W10 on the horizon I can only imagine it getting better). These two issues are the standouts for me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

  • T430s and Backlit Keyboard FRU... is it possible?

Got my T430s today. Has the new keyboard BUT doesn't have the backlit feature. Hmm....
Is it possible to swap out the keyboard with one that does (like the one on the T430)?  Does anyone have any experience and/or FRU that works? I loved the dual light levels and the backlighting better than the overhead option.
    Cheers,
    JIM

    Good day.
I don't know if the T430 keyboards are interchangeable with the T430s, but you could compare the FRU P/Ns found in each model's Parts Listing. Or, you could just source a T430s backlit keyboard using the appropriate P/N. The keyboards are CRU.

  • A1260 vs A1226 keyboard and backlit keyboard differences

I've been using an a1260 and an a1226 macbook pro. I feel a difference in the keys on the a1226, it just has a better feel. in addition, the backlit keyboard seems brighter on the a1226. Has anyone else experienced this. I was thinking of switching keyboards?

Hi J, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
ifixit.com is usually pretty good about showing different models which their stock of parts fit. They list two different keyboards for those two models, with no interchangeability. That is not a definitive answer, however, as they cannot always be correct, and I do have to say, the two KBs look the same (in a quick once-over).
Here are a few parts and/or repair places you may want to check, both for price, and to see if they might show the KB as working on both machines. Good luck.
    powerbookmedic.com
    ifixit.com
    pbparts.com
    dttservice.com
    powerbooktech.com
    powerbookresq.com
    powerbookguy.com
    macrecycling.com/
EDIT: it sounds like you have the "new" KB already? I would usually play it safe in a situation involving expensive electronics, but if I had both parts in hand, looked them over well, it fit properly, and the connector was an exact match, I'd probably try it. OTOH, if you're only talking about a few bucks shipping, can get the correct part number, and can wait to get it, that's certainly better peace of mind.

  • Booting the compute: It wants to start then the screen get a big red stop sign and will not finish booting

I turn on the computere.  It starts to boot I get the apple logo in the center of the screen.  Then I get a red stop sign in the middle of the screen.  The small wheel is still turing but the computer will not start.

Start your iMac with the original DVD that came with the computer then run disk utility on the hard drive to repair it, also repair your permissions.

  • I stupidly ignored the stop sign and installed 4.0. System architecture won't support it. How do I reinstall 3.6?

Ancient iMac (Oval shaped body, swivel screen, two circular clear speakers) running Leopard 10.5.8; PowerPC G4; 1.25 GHz
Hope this is enough info re hardware. It can't support 4.0 There was a BIG universal sign of a circle with the diagonal slash thru the Firefox icon. Did that cause me to stop? Noooo. I plowed right on through and now can't open Firefox at all. Any assistance you can provide to harebrained individual-that's me-would be most appreciated. I'm hoping I can uninstall 4.0 and reinstall 3.5 or 3.6 and not have lost anything. Second best is I can at least uninstall 4.0 and reinstall 3.5 or 3.6 and start fresh. I hope my foolishness can at least offer some bemusement to those more circumspect than I've been. Thanks for any help.

There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
If you prefer, you can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

  • MSI GT683 and backlit keyboard

Is there some other keyboard that fits in to this which have backlit on it, or some modification available?

Quote from: dustinash on 24-March-12, 13:54:12
If they would have made a 683 with glowing keyboard instead of cheesy side lights it would be an ideal computer.  Only way to improve it at this time would have been to take the gt780 and trim all the extra plastic so that screen was almos near the edge of bezel and the body matched.  That would have made this machine quite l33t.
I agree that these lights are quite cheesy, but the performance is what I looked for and this perfoms very well in games and hd video editing. And fortunately I can turn off these lights

  • My macbook air's fan has been on non stop lately and my keyboard won't light up

How do I fix it? Please help..

First of all, hold the Power button to turn off your Mac in case it is turned on. Then, reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 And turn on your Mac.
If your keyboard is still not working and fans are working at full speed, this may mean a hardware issue. Plug the MacBook to the charger and use Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics. Make sure that you run an extended test if you use Apple Hardware Test. Copy the error here if you see one at the end of the test.

  • Help with stop sign on screen - please!

My hard drive has packed up and I have a new one which I have formatted on another G5.
When I start up now I get a folder with a flashing question mark in it.
If I insert my copy of panther then the disk spins and the screen goes to the apple grey screen, but then comes up with a stop sign and I can't proceed any further.
I have tried holding down C when booting up and also alt which brings up a blue screen which shows the osx disc but then it just goes to the stop sign when I proceed.
Please help, why won't the operating system load on?
Because the old hard drive is broken, I only have internet at work.

  • Stop sign when turning on macbook pro

My macbook pro was running very slowly, sometimes not loading web pages and always crashing, I decided to upgrade to Yosemite, it made it worse for a few hours but then suddenly my macbook was running quickly and normally, I thought it was fixed. Today I kept getting the rainbow pinwheel, every few seconds, I had to restart my macbook several times (this took ages as there is a loading bar when I entered my password) but now I am just getting a weird grey stop sign and I am unable to sign in or even get on my macbook. I should also note that the fan was very loud these past few days, now I can't hear it at all.
I have only had this macbook for about 9 months and don't have the money to get a new one, is there anyway to fix it at home, or will I have to take it into a store?

What model MacBook Pro? Could be that the HD failed. The stop sign means that a boot drive could not be found

  • DVD with a small red stop sign - no access

My 1st post in here, good day to ya'll.
I am trying to read a re-writable DVD media that was recorded at my external home DVD Recorder device (in a process of restoring some old family VHS cassettes).
The Mac is displaying the inserted DVD as a folder with a small red stop-sign and does not allow me to access any files in it. It is empty...
    What is the problem?
    Thanks in advance
    Menachem

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Was the home Recorder a Sony by any chance? Even if it wasn't, I suspect that the format you recorded in, is not compatible with Mac OS X. Check out DVD in Finder Help. You could also right click the disc on your desktop and see if there is an option to Open it with an application you can choose.

  • Z30 Red Email Stop sign - what's goingon?

I have just set up my new Z30.  I have previously had the Torch and the Curve so am very happy with Blackberry.
When I try to send an email I constant get a red stop sign and the email won't send.

If I am connected to my wireless network at home this deosnt seemto be a problem - only when using 3G etc.

Most likely, no. Usually a different Electronic Controller is used for the non-backlit and backlit keyboards.
