Stop suggesting router replacement

Hi,
After spending some time viewing the forum entries for iPad WiFi issues, it has become very very apparent that there is:
A. Software inconsistencies causing interruption of WiFi signal/settings.
B. Hardware inconsistencies with the internal antenna(s).
C. Both
I'm sure Apple is hard at work to make their customers happy.
In the meantime, I have seen a large number of faux-tech heads making suggestions like "Your router is out of date, get an Airport Extreme/Express..."
You need to understand that everyone has a different level of tech experience. There are many people out there who are at the mercy of their limited technology knowledge, and will blindly follow suggestions from users who appear to know what they're talking about.
Apple brand routers/airports are extremely high priced. Please stop suggesting that users go out and buy an over priced piece of hardware, based on your uninformed opinion of the problem.
Apple devices like iPhones, Macbooks, etc all function just fine on nearly any network hardware. Distrubution of an IP address/authentication on a network is not an advanced feature, and does not require cutting edge hardware.
For the sake of all end users, and their wallets, please stop suggesting router replacements.
Edited* iPad's do not have Antennae, as far as I know. That's usually insects.

Actually the OP didn’t make any suggestions about staying with out of date router gear at all. Nor did he comment on the style of lamps in his residence.
Router suggestions are fine and they may offer workarounds for some users who have both the knowledge and access to the network gear they use. However they do not offer a general solution.
Based on what I read here, there seem at least two different, but likely related, iPad WiFi issues:
1. The ability to detect nearby wireless networks for connection
2. The ability to achieve a reliable connection with a wireless network selected.
Issue 1 seems a weakness issue of the basic capabilities of the iPad. If an iPad cant see networks, the ability to connect with them seems poor.
If I walk to my back yard with both the iPad and a laptop, their ‘sight’ is very different. My laptop sees 9 separate nearby networks, 2 of which are open and the rest secure. The iPad only sees 1, the one in my home. Somehow that seems pretty basic in compatibility.

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

Is this a problem with the computer or with the word processor? MS Word for example seems to think its grammar and spelling are better than mine - they are not. You have to go into MS Word preferences and uncheck all the useless "help" it wants to provide.

  • Mail stopped working after replacing primary HD

Apple Mail stopped working after replacing and restoring the Main Hard Drive in the upper bay.  Internet connection is good, and the Mail client troubleshooting (Comcast) was no help.  I can start the App, but it does not retrieve or send mail through Comcast anymore.  I have a MacBook Pro with the same settings and Mail works fine.

    Thanks for replying.
This is odd because my PowerMac G5 with Leopard Mail cannot receive or send email.  Connection doctor is showing all red dots on every email account with Comcast (BTW, GMAIL accounts okay).  On my Blackberry, and my MacBook Pro (Lion), the setting are all the same, passwords, etc., and the later two have no issues.  I even created a test Administrator Account in "Accounts" in System Preferences on the G5, logged into the Test Account and tried to create a new mail account with the same settings, and yet during the set-up (Welcome to Mail), I get an error message that says Mail cannot log into Comcast's POP server with the current settings.  I have also tried changing passwords, no help. Also the usual disk repair, permissions,  motherboard resets, zapping PRAM, etc.
    Out of ideas...
    Thanks for any help...

  • How to see all suggested routes in Maps

I'm using Maps in Mavericks.  It shows "1 of 3 suggested routes" but I'd like to be able to look at the other 2 suggested routes. Is there any way I can do that?

    Hey Larry Sochrin1,
Thanks for the question. The suggested routes are all shown on the main map in the application. For example, if you have directions that have 3 suggested routes, you should see three separate blue lines (one of which will be highlighted as the current route, the other two will be a lighter shade of blue). You can toggle between the suggested routes by clicking on the blue line of a different route.
While it may be hard to see in this image (click image to view larger), the following example shows the three blue lines I am referring to (signifying the three separate routes):

    likely display inverter board.
did you get your inverter board replaced already?
    Did you have a question?
If the diagnostic in shop indicates same, thats 1000X better than anyone can do online in "diagnosis" (not really genuine diagnosis of course)

  • Stop iTunes from replacing CD covert art

Is there a way to stop iTunes from replacing CD covers that already exist with something it has determined suits better?
I spend a lot of time getting exactly the covers I want, often not the official cover, only to find at some point in time they are replaced with something else. It's not me doing it so I assume iTunes periodically decides for itself?
Very frustrating, especially when low res images are brutally inserted into my beautiful arrangements!

    GabaraB
Thank you for the information, I did not know that iTunes 8 was available.
I have a question about the setting that you recommended: will "Edit" menu > Preferences > "Ask to import CD" keep iTunes from doing anything when a CD is inserted? I am trying to keep iTunes from popping up and placing itself between me and whichever program I am currently working in.
    Thanks!

  • ASA appears to randomly stop forwarding/routing traffic

Hi guys, got a curly one -
Our ASA appears to randomly stop forwarding traffic between interfaces. Traffic does not forward for several minutes, then it starts again. After a while the traffic stops again for a few minutes, and the cycle repeats.
If you are on a directly connected network you can still ping the ASAs local interface (I have ICMP turned on for testing). However you cannot ping the ASA from any remote network. I can ping or trace all the way up to the last hop without an issue. You also cannot ping across the ASA to servers on the other side, even from the immediate next hop (which as I mentioned above, still works) .
This would appear to point to a routing problem? Strangely, routing still functions for the management network - I have had no problems reaching the command line from elsewhere in the network.
Has anyone encountered something similar to this before?
    Relevent ASA configuration commands below:

  • How do I stop Dreamweaver from replaceing " with È while in code view

Here is my problem (DWCS5 Version):
I open DreamWeaver and all is fine. I only use code view.
As I work I might open .cfm files, or even (it seems) open a browser - and when I return to writing my code, when I type " Dreamweaver types È
    " is typed as È
    ' is typed as è
The only way to stop is is close Dreamweaver and reopen. Then the coding works great for that file until I visit another file I opend or even a browser that was open. It's not every file that I open or page that I visit. I've yet to determine what is happening.
It feels like dreamweaver is somehow changing character sets.
For example, DreamWeaver is currently messed up replacing characters, but it works fine filling out this post.
    Help!

Have you tried clearing the cache file?

Alot of "just started happeining, weird DW behaviors" can be repaired by doing away with the cache file.

  • Any suggestions for replacing Preview?

Preview on Lion has always been flaky. I found a work around for it crashing after images were deleted, (ctrl+click the thumbnail and send to trash rather than delete from the folder). But this week Preview has decided that I don't have permission to view ANYTHING. Images, PDF's, nothing at all. I've done the checking permissions and it tells me I have read & write, but it still won't open anything at all. When I got home, I viewed the same images on my iMac without any problems at all. But then, my iMac is running Snow Leopard and has never had any problems. There is no way I would even consider 'up-grading' (PAH!) to Lion.
So, given that Apple have no interest in making Preview work, does anyone have any suggestions of stable software that I could use instead? I want to very quickly view images and possibly perform simple edit, such as cropping.

    Thanks for the reply.
I'm simply finding this so frustrating. This is my second Macbook Air. My previous machine crashed every time that Preview was used. It then became incredibly unstable and Lion required rebuilding twice. The third time it needed to go back to Apple. On receiving the machine back, I switched it on in the store and it crashed again, there and then, so Apple replaced it.
I posted when the first machine was having problems, eight months ago...
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16957706#16957706
I also posted in a 'Preview problems' thread that began in July 2011. Preview is still unstable a year later :-(
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3195026?start=0&tstart=0
The replacement Macbook Air works fine, except for Preview. Unfortunately because I frequently use the machine for quickly editing photos on the move, that's a big issue for me. Yesterday I was at a race track and couldn't view the images until I returned home.
As for the images, they were mine, taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mk2 and had been downloaded directly from the memory card.
**Bizarely, I have just tried to open an image directly from the memory card and it opened. I returned to the images that are on the Mac that wouldn't open yesterday and they are now opening. I have no explanation for this, I haven't changed anything since I posted my frustrated rant! I haven't even shut the machine down since then.
There is something not right about Preview and if I could find other software to do what I need I would use it.

  • CS3 in MAC OSX7 gives licensing stopped working following replacement of logic board and hard drive.

Repair of MacBookPro with OSX7 replaced logic board and hard drive.  CS3 notified that licensing has stopped working.  It worked before the repair -- and I believe that I had a similar problem in the past.  The Live Chat said that they were not compatible -- which doesn't make sense since it worked fine before the repair.  How can I get it going again.  Chat room said I had to buy new product which seems crazy.

  • Suggestions for replacing out port vi

I  am working at replacing an old computer with a new 64 bit/Windows 7.  Problem is that I can no longer use the Out port vi and wondering if there is any simple way to go about this without having to redesign the complete tester.  Any suggestions for parallel port communication would be great.  I currently use RS232, the parallel port and PCI cards for GPIB and RS232 on the old computer that I am trying to upgrade the system.
I appreciate any suggestions you may have!!

I concur with Dennis. I have used DIO boards of different types to simulate everything from parallel printer ports to microprocessor buses.
The key to minimizing impact is to write driver VIs for whatever hardware that you end up with that are drop in replacements for old VIs.
By that I mean that they not only need to have matching connector panes and terminals, but also perform the same function logically.
How fast does the program need to be able to update the output? The answer to that question will tell you how fast (and expensive) a board you will need.

  • Suggestions to replace Tungsten E

I have my Tungsten E since 5 yrs.
The battery is not keeping is charge and sometimes the device freezes.
    I'm looking for a replacement.
    Any suggestions?
    Post relates to: Tungsten E

So, Palm finally has decided to throw in totally with phones (except for the cruely limited Z22)!  Phones represent constant obligations for me from helpless people: I'm sorry: I don't consider Palm by default to be the Phone King. (For one thing, I don't think they should throw in with Bill--what's the point? Bill can't run Palm apps.).
Anyway, you could try to replace the battery--after you open the case back, you'll note that the battery leads are soldered to the circuit board. If somehow you can find a battery for the E that's still good, you'd need to un-solder the leads of the old battery and solder the leads of the new battery correctly to the circuit board. (Such batteries have limited lives--even if not used.) A bunch of techies on this forum likely don't like me mentioning new battery install for the E to you (no one else has mentioned it--it's not considered something that a client should do on their own). Soldering the leads in the first place is Palm's own fault--Palm shouldn't continue their mentality that their devices should be expendable and disposable after a few years....
I think my Lifedrive died tonight (after a few years)--it won't hard reset or turn off--that's why I'm here; I may have some warranty left on it (after all the bad reviews, I did extend that a couple of years). If warranty still is good, I should receive a refurb unit from Palm. For some unknown reason, I turned it on and it loops--all I've been doing for the last few days is play tunes through Pocket Tunes. That's the way it is--these things die unexpectedly for no apparent reason. People could say it's the specialized SDHC software mentioned elsewhere in the forums--I've been using that for months, however, and I haven't installed anything else lately....

  • How to stop suggestions

With 10.10 Yosemite the suggestions on iCal is driving me insane.  I do not have auto fill selected anywhere on my MBP.  However, with iCal now every entry I add comes up with some type of suggestion.  All of which does not apply to the new entry, but it will not stop.
It is taking me 2, 3 sometimes as many as 5 attempts to change or correct the suggestion to new events.
Does anyone have any idea how to stop iCal from coming up with suggestions?
