Stop updates from overwriting .service files?

I've looked for some time and can't seem to find the answer. Every time lirc is updated with pacman it overwrites my custom lirc.service file, the only search result i've found mentions using NoUpgrade with pacman but that was from 2010 and doesn't seem to be in the pacman man file any longer?

Thank you! That's what I needed to get it to accept my conf tweak for cronie - it wouldn't accept a second ExecStart line and it wasn't clear how to override it. I remembered something vaguely but I couldn't find anything easily when I searched. (Is there documentation on this?)
Also, how would you use this to adapt a particular instance of a template? I actually tried this and I have now managed to mess up the getty on tty even though I thought I'd backed out all my changes. So I'm a bit wary.
I tried creating
# [email protected]/TTYVTDisallocate-BLOCK.conf
[Service]
TTYVTDisallocate=no
but it did not work quite as expected. Trying to change it back, I removed this directory etc. but tty1 is still allocated, I think (I can still log in there) and I have no idea why.
I'm actually really not clear how the getty service affects only tty1 anyway except that it seems that tty2-6 are created with generators rather than with this service so it effectively only applies to tty1.

  • How do I stop PSE8 from overwriting raw files?

I evidently did something wrong.  I wanted to edit my camera raw file but save the finished product as a JPEG.  When I was finished, I noticed the raw file is now changed the same as the JPEG.
I made edits in Adobe Camera Raw Editor and clicked on Open Image to import the changes to the PSE8 Editor.  Is this proper?  I am learning PSE8 and am a little mixed up on use of the Camera Raw Editor and transferring the file to PSE8's Editor.
I don't really want to ever make any changes to the Raw files.  I wanted to keep them original.  Must I make those files "Read Only" in Windows to protect the files?
I have tried searching for info about this, with little success.  I evidently can't find the right terminology for the search.
Any advice would be appreciated!  Thanks in advance!
    Gary.

What you describe isn't possible. PSE never changes a raw photo; in fact, it can't change a raw photo — the software simply doesn't have the capability.
Perhaps, if you are looking at the Organizer, you are looking at the JPG in a "Version Set", where in this instance the Organizer only shows the JPG and not the RAW. You should be able to uncover the RAW (which is "hidden below" the JPG in the Version Set) by right-clicking on the JPG in the Organizer and selecting Version Set->Expand...

Sounds good to me. I should point out that normally, you would do as many edits as possible in Adobe Camera Raw; and then only use the PSE Editor if you need to make edits that can't be done in ACR (for example, layers). You would NOT create a JPG or TIF or PSD if ACR did all the editing you need; in that case click on Done.

Trust me, your original RAW files are not changed at all.

  • [SOLVED] How Can I Stop DHCPCD from Overwriting my /etc/resolv.conf...

    Hey guys,
For some unknown reason /etc/dhcpcd.conf continually overwrites my /etc/resolv.conf file, eventhough I set the "nohook resolv.conf" hook in /etc/dhcpcd.conf.
This is screwing up my DNS and intermittently creating connection problems. Any of you guys know why the hook is not taking effect or how I can stop dhcpcd from overwritting this file?
    Thanks

    nohook resolv.conf
I don't think that information will help w201...
I changed my DNS to the Google one (8.8.8.8 or something). That's in "resolv.conf", isn't it? I remember editing some OTHER configuration file, which is then read to create the "resolve.conf" file. There it is, in that link to the wiki, under "Use resolv.conf.head". Does that help you do what you want to do?
There's three techniques at the wiki link, the nohook one, the resolv.conf.head one and the write-protection attribute.

  • Preventing root from overwriting a file

Is there any way to keep pacman (or other package managers that run as root) from overwriting a file in a directory where it would normally be overwritten? Without using the immutable flag (which only works on ext* filesystems)? I know this should strictly never be necessary, but if there is any way to render things read-only for root, I think it would be useful to know.

Pacman creates .pacnew files for the files in backup array:

  • How do I stop LR4 from organizing imported files into a folder by date.

How do I stop LR4 from organizing imported files into a folder by date. Most times when I import files I have already created a folder and sub-folder structure tyat I want to use. I then right click the desired folder and choose import into this folder option. Why does LR4 insist on organizing my already selected destination into a sub-folder with a date by default?

If you do it this way all the time consider a different approach:
Manually copy your images from the card into your desired destination folder in the Finder/Explorer. Once complete drag&drop that entire folder into Lightroom. When the import dialog pops up select to Add the images to the catalog (not copy or move). You will end up with the exact folder structure reflected in your library.

  • How can I stop Lion from overwriting my apache conf files

I am at the point of abandoning OS X forever and returning to loading NetBSD on macs.  I have never been so angry at a piece of Apple software.
On reboot, the server completely wiped out my apache configuration and rebuilt it.  Thankfully I had backups.
How I can prevent Lion from interfering with my apache setup?  I will NEVER use that crappy admin tool again.  Webmin is FAR superior to it if I need a GUI tool.  I can live in the shell very happily.  I don't want to have to install a new webserver from source if I can avoid it. I just want to stop Lion from destroying my conf files.
How do I wrest control from this monster?

All we did was not modify httpd.conf other than adding an include at the end. If you put your content in other files, it doesn't seem to mess with them.

  • How can I stop Firefox from opening (to "File Not Found") when opening my Opera browser?

Ever since I installed Opera 10.61 on my new computer (Windows 7 Ultimate operating system), whenever I open Opera, Firefox opens one second later with the following error message:

This happens EVERY TIME I OPEN THE OPERA BROWSER. How can I stop this from happening? I'm stumped.
[EXTRA INFO - I was unable to enable Firefox to access my previous profile on the new computer (despite putting the old profile in the appropriate Mozilla Firefox folder. So, there are now two profiles in that location.
After reading the answer to another forum member's question, I attempted to resolve the problem using Profile Manager, but I was unable to locate the Profile Manager. The Windows "Search" feature is not enabled on my new computer (nor can it be enabled from the Customize Start Menu options).]

Thank you for your response, Cor-el.
I had Opera set as my default browser since this began happening. I changed my default browser back to Firefox mainly because having Firefox open one or two seconds every time I open Opera was/is such a nuisance.
I believe this problem began because I attempted to manually transfer the files from my old computer to the new one (via the backed up files in my external drive). I was unfamiliar with Windows 7 when I did this. Microsoft changed the file set up from what I had been used to in Windows XP. I used XP for six years before being exposed to Windows 7 (I never had Vista).
I'm almost sure this problem has something to do with where I placed the application data when I was trying to reestablish the program set up on the new computer.

  • How do I stop Quicktime from overriding music file downloads and playing them in the browser rather then letting me download them straight to my hardrive.

I am trying to download a mastered track from a fellow musician.

    Can someone help please?!

Thanks Michael. Apologies for the slow reply I was away for a bit (holiday blitz at work and visiting family madness etc.etc.) back now, I set both options you requested to "never " and retried the CMS software with no change.
I do have progress of a sort though, as a test I took a separate test PC and put a clean install of Win7 on and loaded up the CMS software (it worked perfectly) and then took the version of ole32.dll off that machine and put it onto the computer I had built
    for her (using Linux) and...
got a new error code. Darn I was so sure I had found a clever solution this time lol.
Anyway now when the CMS fails it gives me a similar error but the offending module is "ntdll.dll" sooo... I tried taking the "working" version of ntdll.dll from the test box and moving it over (making sure to back up the existing ones
first so I could put them back if needed) to her new PC and the PC would not boot.
It seems to want the original versions of a few Dynamic Link Libraries and if I could somehow give it those while not breaking Win7 it should theoretically work seeing as it no longer errors with ole32.dll.
ntdll.dll however seems necessary for Win7 to boot.
So what I am wondering now is:
Is there some way to have both versions of the DLL file in the system32 folder (bypassing the "cannot have two files with the exact same name in the same folder" thing) or rename the original DLL's something else and somehow make the CMS look for
the new named versions so the system has the updated DLL's it needs to boot/run and the CMS has the old ones it wants to run or is there someway to have a self contained install of the CMS, say on a USB flash drive and give it it's own E:/windows/system32/needed
dll's  path to the files it needs?
Willing to try any other options or settings you may have come up with as well.
Thanks again for your reply and my apologies for not answering sooner.

  • How do I stop lightroom from modifying JPEG files?

During the Beta phase, I pretty much used lightroom only on RAW files. Now, with V1.0, I have had occassion to use this program on JPEGS produced by a P&S camera.
Hmmm. It appears that lightroom is writing data to the files. . .Is there anyway to force the program to use independent sidecar files, like it does for RAW? Manipulating JPEGS is a *major* draw back.
(So far. . I have been smart enough to only feed lightroom *copies* of files. . .so no data has been corrupted yet)
    Thanks for your help.

Yes, Lightroom V1.0 is DEFINATLY writing data to JPEG files.
I would VERY STRONGLY prefer sidecar files, as I do not want to ever modify the "as shot" files.
Simply NOT USING the sidecar data, however, is silly. How else do you know what has been done to the images? I have now developed the following (really cludgy yet effective) work practice:
    1) When storing files, I immediately create a "modified" and "Original" image directory. (Yes, this effectively DOUBLES storage requirements).
    2) The original files are immediately tagged as "read only" within XP. This stops (I hope) lightroom from messing with them if I make a mistake.
    3) I import the "modified" files into lightroom for image handling. I allow lightroom to modify these files to it's hearts content.
This seems to be working well for me. I have had to move some directories around, and have "reimported" the modified JPEGs into lightroom: Lightroom correctly (I think) maintained all the edits from my original pass at the files. I have not checked if the histories are lost. . .but that is not a big deal, as I only care about the end result.
BUT. . . I still would STRONGLY prefer a sidecar file.
PS: This is my biggest nit-pick with lightroom so far. Except that I suspect that Lightroom V1.0 (with 200 images in the library so for) appears slower than Lightroom B4.1

  • How can I stop iTunes from numbering ripped files?

How can I stop iTunes 11.2.1 from automatically adding numbering before track titles when I rip files from a CD? I used to be able to do this generations of iTunes ago but later versions don't seem to offer an option to turn this off. All ideas, tips, suggestions and hints welcome.

Thanks very much for your reply. I'm not ripping music but rather audiobook CDs which I then use Audiobook Builder to create audiobooks I can "read" on my iDevice. On the odd occasion iTunes will "recognize" the audiobook CD and offer to import metadata for it ... which is almost always incorrect. Thus, I usually decline the metadata import and enter the appropriate and correct metadata via Get Info. Then, when I import the files from the CD, iTunes automatically numbers each file ahead of the file title. I was previously able to disable this behavior but I can't find any way to do so in iTunes 11.2.1. Some have said TinkerTool used to provide this feature but no longer does. I don't know if TinkerTool has a Mavericks-compatible version - I'll have to check that out. If not, then I'm still trying to find a way to disable automatic track numbering in iTunes when ripping audiobook CDs. Thanks again for your reply ... I 'preciate it.

  • How do I stop iTunes from overwriting existing songs?

I am attempting to import selections from multiple CDs that all have the same volume and artist name.  When I import another selection from a different disc iTunes automatically begins to overwrite the existing track.  I've asked the creator of the discs for help and they gave me an  explanation of Gracenotes, etc. and said to use the help menu to change  the names.  I have changed the name, artist and album of the existing track using Get Info, but iTunes still overwrites.  I run Win 7 and iTunes 10.6.1.7.
    How can I fix this?

    Mac OS X: Double-Clicking a File Opens the Wrong Application - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2291
-= Changing the application used to open all files of a certain kind (written with reference to OSX 10.4 but may not have changed) =-
    1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.
    2) While that file is highlighted, select File > Get Info or press command (apple or propeller icon) + i to get a file information window.
    3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
    4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more.  Close the get info window.
    5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
    6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
    7) Close the get info window.

  • How do I prevent Security Updates from overwriting (custom) PHP install?

    Hi,
I've been forced into re-installing PHP from binaries after every Apple Security Update that upgrades PHP and I'm over it. Everytime Apple upgrades PHP, "their" compile overwrites mine and I lose my libraries. I have to completely wipe the Apple PHP install and re-compile. I've done this 3 or 4 times now in the past couple years...
Is there any way to force the Security Updates to retain the install of "my" libraries? What about the update installer(s)? Where are they?
    12" PB 1.25   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

An Update shouldn't affect PHP, this is a server side language that is stored on the server for the implamintation of Dynamic Web Pages.
Self-referentially short for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, an open source, server-side, HTML embedded scripting language used to create dynamic Web pages.
In an HTML document, PHP script (similar syntax to that of Perl or C ) is enclosed within special PHP tags. Because PHP is embedded within tags, the author can jump between HTML and PHP (similar to ASP and Cold Fusion) instead of having to rely on heavy amounts of code to output HTML. And, because PHP is executed on the server, the client cannot view the PHP code.
PHP can perform any task that any CGI program can do, but its strength lies in its compatibility with many types of databases. Also, PHP can talk across networks using IMAP, SNMP, NNTP, POP3, or HTTP.
PHP was created sometime in 1994 by Rasmus Lerdorf. During mid 1997, PHP development entered the hands of other contributors. Two of them, Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans, rewrote the parser from scratch to create PHP version 3 (PHP3).
