Stopping my n95 8gb using data packets?

Hi just got the phone and am worried that i could end up with a huge bill for the phone when its accessing data. Is there a way to stop it completly or making it ask every time?

Would be nice to see a STOP ALL DATA CONNECTIONS button available in Standby mode like what is available in Windows Mobile. Also, what would be cooler is if it could tell you which program is asking to connect to the Internet and if you would allow it. This way you can determine which program is malconfigured.

  • Transfer of Birthdays to N95 8GB using Phone Switc...

I transferred my Birthdays from a 6230i to a N95 8GB using the Phone Swith facility and infrared and they have transferred to the N95 as Meetings rather than Anniversaries.
The Meetings are on the N95 with a Yearly repeat but are not Anniversaries. The age is not displayed on the calendar entry whereas it was on the 6230i. The reminder alarm has not transferred either and there is no way of viewing these birthdays separately from other calendar entries.
Have I done something wrong with the transfer? Can this be corrected? Does the N95 not have the same calendar facilities as the 6230i?! Please advise. Thanks in advance!

Yeah this is really annoying - I've done the same thing in upgrading from my 6233, and I'm still trying to find a solution other than manually editing every single entry.
Actually there are tons of things, basic functionalities, which were present in the 6233 but which are missing or not as good in the so called 'smart phone'!
I really wish Nokia would keep things consistent between models, as we all spend a long time getting used to a particular model and developing habits and ways of doing things - then we upgrade, sticking with Nokia so we don't have to change the way we do things, only to find out that Nokia have removed/changed/buggered up a perfectly good function.
Anyway, if I find a solution I'll post it here - and if you could do the same that'd be great! :-)
    I didn't get where I am today.

  • N95 8Gb - using the internatl GPS dicsonnects Blue...

    Hi,
I've got a current version N95 8Hb with all the updates etc. I want to use a bluetooth headset for voice navigation with the internal GPS with Garmin Mobile XT software.
As soon as I activate any software that uses the internal GPS the bluetooth headset is disconnected. Turn off the GPS and the headset reconnects.
How can I stop this happening so I can use the headset.
    Cheers

    Ok,
First things. How are you sure that MAPS was the application responsible for the data usage?
MMS, email, SMS, browser, etc. etc. many applications can access the data line and you specify this in each application. I don't know of any way to turn it off completely without using OFFLINE mode. The settings you described basically allow any application to use data "when needed" and use ANY access point and use HSDPA if available.
    About GPS methods:
Network based: In some networks it uses triangulation from the base stations to get a positional fix, This has to be supported by the network, but this doesn't (or shouldn't) use "internet data" so it shouldn't count towards your data plan.
Bluetooth: This option is to use an external GPS module like the LD-4W or others. This is great for car usage as the reception from these modules is better than the phone antenna. If there's not BT GPS device leaving it on doesn't really affect anything.
Assisted: this is AGPS and uses a combination of the stand alone GPS module and the network to get a faster location fix. THis is the best option, I'm not 100% sure if this uses network data channel, mmm need to confirm.
Integrated: It ONLY uses the GPS receiver inside the Phone, It's much slower to get the first fix and you are more likely to lose the signal if you are in an urban environment.
If you select Integrated and/or Bluetooth and turn off Network and AGPS, then you will get GPS fix totally independent of your operator. You can use MAPS without a SIM card if I'm not mistaken...

  • N95 8Gb USB Data Transfer Mode not working

I have a bizarre problem with USB Data transfer.
    a) I upgraded to the new 15.x firmware with the correct HKCSL package - 0557980
    b) I connected PC #1 in data transfer mode with no issue and copied a bunch of installers onto the mass memory and went on to install them - to the PHONE memory.
    c) Later in the day, connected PC #2 and did the same with the last few applications.
    d) Next day tried to connect PC #1 and it didn't work
    e) Thought I must have an application using the MASS storage but checked and not so - all apps on Phone memory.
    f) Went to PC #2 and tried - Data transfer mode works - no problem.
    g) Tried PC #1 again, and still not working. I get all the right messages (Mass storage cannot be used at this time etc) on the handset, and I get the "safely remove hardware" option appearing on the PC - but I don't get a drive letter assigned in the Windows Explorer.
    h) I have tried it on PC #3 and this works as well - no problem.
    1. The working PC's both have PC Suite 2-Beta installed, while the problem PC has no PC suite at all.
    2. I have downloaded the Nokia-connectivity_cable_driver_rel_6_85_10_0 and it installs properly - giving all the expected wireless... options in Device Manager, but I still don't get a drive letter assigned with the basic data transfer mode on this problem PC #1
So the issue seems to be with a PC that has never seen any version of PC suite, but it worked straight after the firmware upgrade.
    All PC's are XP SP2.
Any suggestions on anything else to try ?
    Regards

    SOLVED by:
    - attaching N95, selecting USB Data Transfer Mode
    - Going to Device Manager
    - Selecting the USB Mass Storage Device for N95
    - "Uninstall"
    - Remove cable when N95 says its safe to
    - Re-attach cable
The PC then re-discovered and reloaded the drivers including the mass storage which then worked normally.
No idea what messed it up in the first place though.

  • N95 8GB Release Date on O2 Ireland

Does anyone know if and when O2 Ireland will be releasing the N95 8GB model.
They are currently shipping the older N95 standard edition and only Vodafone seem to have the N95 8GB.
As the O2 price plans really suit me I am reluctant to switch to Vodafone just to get the 8GB model.
I had heard that Vodafone has an exclusive deal until Christmas and there is some sentiment out there that O2 will have it sometime in January 08.
The only reference I can find is a posting suggesting that O2 UK will have it on 14/Jan/08. Will O2 Ireland follow a similar pattern?

  • Magnets & N95 8Gb

Have my N95 8Gb in a belt holster with a magnet clip. Noticed at night when the phone was in the holster, the screen was always lit.
Try it - magnets near the screen will switch the screen on; not out of unlock mode but draining your batteries nevertheless.
Save your batteries and turn it away from any magnet!
If no-one died or got sued, it's an OK day

Only if the Memory is magnetic media (like a Hard Disk Drive)
The N95 8GB uses Nand Flash for memory so it's not affected by static magnetic fields (i.e. Magnets).

  • Nokia N95 8GB data counter accuracy + T-Mobile (UK...

    Hi.
I have the 10GB per month web 'n' walk max package.
I use the Nokia N95 8GB as a modem for my computer as I do not have a land line.
I reset the Nokia's data counter (uploaded and downloaded totals) on the 1st of each month.
Since T-Mobile changed the service about 3 months ago I receive text warnings when I reach 80% of the fair use policy (i.e. 8GB) and a text if I hit 100% (i.e. 10GB). If I hit 10GB I am told that I will still be able to surf but not download at peak times.
There seems to be a big difference between what T-Mobile claim I have used and what the phone's counter shows. This month, for example, I have received the 80% warning but my phone only shows a total (up & down) of 6.3GB, 1.7GB difference.... quite large I feel! Last month I received a text telling me i had hit 100% but my phone only counted 8GB total.
When I contacted tech support they checked the system and came up with different figures. The 1st system which I believe is the same one customers can access by logging into t-mobile.co.uk and downloading the unbilled data usage figures gave about 8.7GB total. This system until very recently used to crash if you attempted to download the internet usage and had used a few gigs of data... useful. The support person then checked a second system which gave a total of 9GB. However these two different systems are not the ones that generate the warnings and also the cut-off (or rather reduced surfing restriction) texts. So T-Mobile have at least 3 systems.
So I have some obvious issues. T-Mobile have now stated that the data counter in the phone will not be that accurate and will miss some data, implying it is to do with counting compressed data rather than uncompressed. I disagree. The phone counter will surely count all 1s and 0s coming through it regardless of what they are. At this point I made the analogy to my electricity supply... the meter is in my house, that is the device by which I and my provider go by. They do not have a meter at the power station end. They bill me for what comes into my house at my front door and not what is sent out. That is the most accurate method for the customer.
I wonder what Nokia would say if T-Mobile inform customers that their hardware can not add up?
I believe there is a trading standards issue looming here as I do not believe I am getting what I pay for. At best appears to be 90% use. Whilst it is true they do not cut me off entirely if I exceed the 10GB, they are not letting me even reach that point. I seems similar to the current issues surrounding quoted broadband maximum speeds and actual obtainable speeds.
So has anyone had similar problems and disagreements about the fair use policy? Does anyone have any information / ideas about the Nokia data counter accuracy?
I am on the verge of contacting trading standards and any other suitable body about this.
    Many thanks.

    Thanks for replying.
If you are right, and as you say "I'm guessing", your butcher's analogy seems a good one. I know that the full data packet is not just the actual data but has the header attached (which I think can be up to 60 bytes?) but assumed that only the size of the contents would be counted not the wrapping. I wonder if this is what is actually going on. It would seem extremely unfair if it is especially as it can make a good gigaybte or more difference.
T-Mobile do not provide a reliable method to keep an eye on what is being used so what chance do I have? I still come back to my electricity supply analogy which I would say is similar to yours. My electricity supplier doesn't charge me for any electrical losses that occur between my front door and the power station (well not obviously anyway).
T-Mobile don't provide any software if you use the phone as a modem (unlike their web 'n' walk software if you use their USB dongle) and suggest you find software on the net to monitor your usage. However all the software I have tried seems to have limitations as to what type of data it can and can't monitor so is less than accurate and all have crashed at times and lost the running totals. The only accurate tool in my hands seems to be the phone itself.
Surely the customers shouldn't have to worry about transmission specifics, without those the net wouldn't work at all so how can they be charged for? Customers I guess would only want to pay for the actual data they are using. If I download a 1MB file I only want to pay for 1MB. Will the TV license people start charging extra for digital TV as the data is sent in packets?
    Hmmph!
    Thanks.

  • N95 8Gb O2 Active Hotmail problem - stopped workin...

I've had my N95 8Gb for 3 months, and have a contract with O2. I've been successfully using Hotmail (aka Livemail) via O2 Active since I've had the phone, and now its stopped working.
Upon the initial logon to Hotmail, I supplied my email address and password, and presume the N95 or O2 Active stores the details as a cookie somewhere. After that first logon, I've not been asked for email/password, and it just logged straight in everytime.
Now when I login, it goes through the usual motions, then I just get a blank white screen. Message at the top shows "mobile.live.com/hm/folder.aspx?lc=en..."
Each time I click on Hotmail from O2 Active, I get the same blank white screen.
I've been in-store, and also contacted O2 Support twice, but they've not been able to resolve. They've checked out my account/phone and there is no problem.
When placing my SIM into another N95 8GB, Hotmail works ok - I'm presented with the Hotmail logon screen to supply my email address/password.
I've tried 'Clearing All Privacy data' including Cache, Cookies, History, Form/Password Data. Still doesn't work.
I've tried searching for a Hotmail cookie in the directories, but can't seem to find it anywhere, I can only presume the cookie is stored within O2 Active(?).
Its driving me mad. O2 can't help, and their only suggestion is to replace my phone. Surely there's a simpler answer?!
    Any help much appreciated
    Thanks,
    James

hi i work for o2 and have only seen this problem on one other occasion. it could be a few things causing this, the main one i would suggest would be to try changing the web access point from 'o2 active' to 'mobile web' or if its on 'mobile web' switch it to o2 active.
( if not go to web, press options then select settings, general and then set the 'access point to 'user defined' - it will then ask which point you want to use when connecting.
if this fails it may be something to do with the web settings, rather than listing a long list of settings you can get them sent to you automatically from o2 by going to:
    http://getsettings.o2.co.uk/ServeSettingsWebApp/
    and following the steps.
goodluck i know how frustrating it can be

  • N95-8GB - Not able to connect in Data Transfer Mod...

    Hi all,
Recently I bought N95-8GB and installed PC Suite which comes along with the phone in my OS Windows Vista Home Premium. When I try to connect my phone in Data Transfer mode, I am getting message "Found new hardware - Windows needs to install driver software for your unknown device" and I am not able to find any driver for the same.
Please help me out to solve this problem.

just let the wizard run through and select the options that windows will search for the friver itself. the dirvers are included in nokia Pc suite package.
YOu can also try to use the standard NOkia PC Suite from www.nokia.com/pcsuite or generally look for a fresh version of NSeries PC Suite from thephone web-pages, the CD-ROM versions are normally outdated

  • N95 8GB reboots periodically in data transfer mode

I have a new N95 8GB running firmware v20. Unfortunately, when I use the genuine USB cable and select "Data Transfer Mode" the phone reboots 60 seconds after I connect the cable (and thereafter each 60 seconds when I don't touch the phone).
I have tried with a non-genuine cable and the behaviour is the same.
Coincidentally the "Power Save Time-out" is set to 60 seconds. When I change this to another value, say 40 seconds, then the above rebooting happens every 40 seconds.
This appears to be a phone bug and makes it extremely difficult to use data transfer mode, unless you can transfer files within the power save time-out period, or unless you are prepared to press a button on the phone within this period.
    **Nokia please fix this**
    See related post: /discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&thread.id=81967&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

Well, rotateme works perfectly for me and i have a n95 8gb too.So there are two things that might happening.
1.You are doing something wrong with the whole installation(does rotateme works when you install it?)
2.You downloaded your self a corrapted or somekind of a virus or a bug .sis file and installed it to your phone.
Why dont you try to download one other rotateme file for you?You can find plenty rotateme from a lot of users.I can send you mine,if you want send me an e-mail and i`ll send to you the .sis file that i used and as i said,it works fine for me.

As with any kind of product from any company, a new Nokia phone model may be put on sale anything from a couple of weeks to several months from the public and press launch.
There are also a number of factors outside of Nokia's control that have to be taken into account -
    (1) Once launched and made available for sale, many operators and high-street retailers will only order new stock in accordance with their normal routines, ie: they might place orders with Nokia at certain intervals, or they might not order new stocks until sufficient numbers of their existing stocks have been sold.
    (2) Once Nokia has orders for the new model, stocks have to be distributed to the operators/retailers, who then have to get the phoens into their own distribution chains to the various outlets.
    (3) In many markets, operators dominate the mobile phone market, and in these cases you can bet your bottom dollar the phones will be repackaged in the operator's boxes with the operator's versions of the firmware before it hits the shop shelf.
    (4) SIM-free phones are, in many markets, only available direct from the manufacturer or from independent retailers. Nokia does not decide how many phones will be SIM-free, ti depends on the individual market as to how dominant operators are.
    (5) Sales dates will also vary from country to country

Hi everything from my Nokia got deleted when I was deleting items from the LifeBlog.  I did a recovery from it using recovery software, however some items were retrieved no problems but some video files and pictures are unable to open or to view. I have lost about a month and a half worth of really important information that wasn't backed up. Any ideas why this would happen??  I remember deleting stuff from the LifeBlog previously and not loosing all my data.
The other problem I have is that my old phone was faulty so I was sent a new one, the old one had the Ngage games purchased and a few other games, however the Ngage games aren't accessible even though I can see it in the directory (Asphalt 3, Brain Game)

PC Suite doesn't even come into the equation here.
Connect the phone in data storage mode. It will appear in your "My Computer" as an external drive.
Enable the display of hidden and system files so that everything gets copied and just drag/drop stuff over from one place to the other using the explorer.
(Note that I can't provide more detailed help than that since I don't actually use Windows on my own PCs)
