Stopping Pacman from upgrading a package (Xorg-server 1.9)

I was looking to use the proprietary AMD drivers (catalyst 11.3 at the moment) and I notice that there is no compatibility with Xorg-server 1.10.
If I install xorg 1.9 from [http://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra … rg-server/] using
sudo pacman -S extra/xorg-server
then later by running
sudo pacman -Syu
I'm asked to upgrade to xorg-server 1.10 from testing. Can I stop if from asking by disabling xorg in testing until the catalyst suite is supported?
Sorry I'm a newbie to Arch and haven't found such basic things out for myself yet. Though I have to say, I'm really loving it!
As an aside, what is all your opinions on the proprietary drivers? The latest release has solved the screen tearing issue for me (on Debian) and it performs many times better than the open source drivers for my gaming. In fact, the only thing I have trouble with, really, is KMS.

Maybe disabling "testing" in /etc/pacman.conf is an option for you.  So Xorg (and other packages)  will be updated when it's in the stable repos...

  • [SOLVED] Pacman wont upgrade any packages

EDIT: I was able to solve my problem by pacman -R yaourt package-query pacman-color, I was then able to update pacman. Since I like yaourt and wanted to keep it I follow the instructions on their page (http://archlinux.fr/yaourt-en#get_it). I added their repo to my /etc/pacman.conf and then installed yaourt from pacman and now everything works again like it should.

I assume this should be git-repository=0.6.6 Also I can find this package on Pacman or AUR

This is obsolete dependency connected with gobject-introspection support. I think it can be removed without any problems. :)

  • Inhibiting port from upgrading a package?

How can I have port either forget about that package without removing any binaries, or forcefully have it keep that package in its current version and go on upgrading the rest?
    thanks

  • I do not want to upgrade to 7.0, I am attending online college and the upgraded version does not work with my school. How can I stop Firefox from upgrading? I have to keep uninstalling the upgrade and installing the old one.

How can I stop Firefox from automatically upgrading? My on-line college is not compatible with the upgraded version. I have to keep uninstalling the new one and reinstalling the old one.

It's not a good idea to allow websites to redirect to another site until you know for sure the original site is trustworthy.
But if you still want to do it (again not a good idea).
Tools>Options>Advanced>General - In Accessibility, uncheck "warn me when web sites try to redirect..." option.

  • Can you stop firefox from upgrading beyond 3.6? My distance education course is in jeopardy if you don't.

Waterloo University 1 519 888-4567, tells me in no uncertain terms that as of this moment, Firefox 3.6 is the only version that does not cause problems in dealing with distance education students. I have already experienced one such problem and I am desparate... as long as this situation exists... to keep from upgrading my 3.6. Your system refuses to pay any attention to my need, at present, to NOT UPGRADE. It is now planning to force this upgrade on my computer.

You shouldn't use old versions of Firefox, they are insecure, using them can lead to your private information being stolen. Please update Dashlane to it's latest release.

  • How do I stop mavericks from looking for an old server and nagging me that it can't find it?

MacBook Air running OS X 10.9.4
Had it set up to connect to my main iMac for shared files.  Wife complained that when my iMac wasn't on the MacBook constantly nagged her with a message saying it couldn't connect to the server (my iMac).
Removed sharing on my iMac.  Removed recent server list from the MacBook Air.  Removed my iMac from the finder side bar in the MacBook.  Now the MacBook Air constantly naggs us that it can't find the server (name of my iMac).  I just want the @#$@# thing to shut up, quit looking for the iMac and be quiet.
Need help as I can't figure this one out.
    PLEASE!!

There are many possible causes for this issue, and it may be hard to resolve. Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
If you get the alert in the login screen before you log in, stop here and ask for instructions.
    Step 1
If you get the alert as soon as you log in, it's probably caused by one of your login items or by software that otherwise loads at startup or login. Ask if you need help identifying it. A known offender is "AdobeResourceSynchronizer," which is a component of some Adobe products. See also this discussion.
    Step 2
If there's an icon representing the server in the sidebar of a Finder window, hold down the command key and drag it out.
    Step 3
In the Finder, press the key combination command-K or select
              Go ▹ Go to Server...
from the menu bar. In the upper right corner of the window that opens is a Recent Servers popup menu represented by a clock icon. From that menu, select
              Clear Recent Servers…
    and confirm. Test.
    Step 4
Open the Printers & Scanners pane in System Preferences and delete any network devices you no longer use.
    Step 5
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing  command-C:
    ~/Library/PDF Services
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. A folder may open. If it does, move the contents to the Desktop, or to a new folder on the Desktop. Log out and log back in. Test. If there's no change, put the items you moved back where they were and continue.
    Step 6
    Open the folder
    ~/Library/Preferences
as in Step 5 and move the file named "loginwindow.plist" items in that folder to the Trash, if it exists (it may not.)
Log out and back in again, and test.
    Step 7
Other possible causes are references in the iPhoto, iTunes, or iMovie library pointing to the server, and bookmarks in the Preview application.
    Try rebuilding the iPhoto library.
    Step 8
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up. Start up in safe mode. Test. After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Step 9
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Directory Utility.app
Rght-click or control-click the highlighted text and select
              Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* The application Directory Utility will open.
In the Directory Utility window, select the Directory Editor tool in the toolbar. Select Mounts from the Viewing menu in the toolbar, and/Local/Default from the node menu, if not already selected. On the right is a list of names and values. By default, the list is empty. If it's not empty, post a screenshot of the window and stop here.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.
    Step 10
Open the following file as you did in the last step:
    /etc/auto_master
It will open in a TextEdit window. The contents should be exactly this:
    # Automounter master map
    +auto_master          # Use directory service
    /net               -hosts          -nobrowse,hidefromfinder,nosuid
    /home               auto_home     -nobrowse,hidefromfinder
    /Network/Servers     -fstab
    /-               -static
If there are any other lines in the window, post them. Otherwise, close the window.

  • Pacman seldom upgrades community packages.

i am in a college so connect  to the net through a proxy.
i use rankmirror to rank my top 10 mirrors but still pacman upgrades or installs packages with a success rate of about only 20% .
it genrally dounloads and upgrades the small "core pacages" but fails when it comes to opgrading big files...
Someone please help... what is the reason of this flickering nature?

tried the alternative Xfer command, i.e uncommented this line and now it's working fine.
    XferCommand = /usr/bin/wget -4 --passive-ftp -c -O %o %u
but still  i wanna know why it wasn't working earlier..

  • How do I stop Firefox from upgrading automatically?

I have tried all options under tools options advanced update and NONE of them disable automatic updates. Whichever one is selected, at some point Firefox will upgrade without getting user approval, which is complete and utter crap.
I have to maintain an application which must run on Firefox version 3.6, cannot be ported to any later version, and is only used to access the control application.
I'm sick and tired of having to uninstall and reinstall Firefox every time it goes in direct violation of my settings and updates itself automatically. Why even have a setting for this if hte setting is completely ineffectual?

I am very dissatisfied that the new FF automatically updates itself. If this cannot be turned off then you have just lost me as a user. This is the pits considering I have been a user ever since FF replaced NetScape. I do not want this so called feature. That is very arrogant to act like Microsoft in thinking you know better than the end user.
FF used to be the way to go because it allowed users to decide for themselves what they want. Your strong arm attitude is NOT acceptable. Period.

  • Can't upgrade AUR packages after removal of /var/lib/pacman/local

Hi guys, i accidentally deleted the content of /var/lib/pacman/local but fortunately i restored it following the wiki.
But, in this way, i only restored base packages and so no one of the packages i've installed from AUR is shown in the list of the installed packages....i thought to install them again one by one, but installation is not successful because files already exist and, beside this, i don't rember the name of all the AUR packages....
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks

    WorMzy wrote:
Unless you have a backup of /var/lib/pacman/local, I think you're going to have to manually remove files provided by AUR packages, then reunstall them. Or you could try forcing the install (see man pacman), but take care not to break other packages in the process.
If it's useful to you, you can generate a list of files that pacman doesn't know about with:
    find / -exec pacman -Qo -- {} + 2> /tmp/files >/dev/null
    less /tmp/files
This will include cache files, user created files, etc. so don't just rm everything unowned by pacman.
That's what i thought to do but as i wrote i don't remember which are the aur packages, better still i remember just some of them...i tried your commands but i get a list of such strange things about cache etc...i can't see nothing concerning pacman....surely is a lack of mine....

  • How NOT to upgrade a package while pacman -Syu

This may sound confusing, but I am trying to keep my system up to date with the latest software, but I do not want to upgrade one package or else I am 110% sure I will break my system.
So when I run pacman -Syu, it tells me that I have 4 packages to upgrade, one being the package I do not want to update. So far the only way I found to upgrade my system but still keeping it unbroken is having to manually install all theremaing upgrades using
    pacman -S name_of_packages_that_need_to_be_upgraded.
which can be a long list (3 in this case), especially if I don't do it for awhile.
My question is, is there a way to stop pacman from trying to always upgrade the one package I do not want and upgrade all the rest just like its supposed to?
I have not found a way to do this, but I am not fluent enough with the package manager to know if there is a command for this task. If there isn't such a command, then how hard would it be to add this functionality? I know this kinda goes against the arch way, but so does manually upgrading each package individually. KISS
Any help would be appreciated and I can clearly understand if this can't be resolved.

I will add, I put this under the general options part of pacman.conf for anyone who is confused that is reading this. Great tip this one here is. One more question though? would u put multiple packages on one line or would u add a ignorpkg = for every package u don't want upgraded?

  • Latest upgrade of xorg-server seems to have broken amule

Hi. Is this the right place to inform this kind of things? If it isn't, then I apologize.
Anyway, I am getting the following when trying to run amule:
    [nacho@gurney ~]$ amule
    Initialising aMule
Checking if there is an instance already running...
    No other instances are running.
    HTTP download thread started
The program 'amule' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
    (Details: serial 600 error_code 11 request_code 143 minor_code 5)
    (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
    pure virtual method called
    Aborted

Until before the last upgrade (which included xorg-server, so I suspect it is related), it was working properly.
    Thanks!

    Take a look at:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=42502
    http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/9254?project=1
A downgrade to xorg-server-1.4.90-3 should solve the problem.

  • HT201232 how can I stop icloud drive from upgrading?

iCloud drive has been updating almost 2 days or longer on my 5s.  How can I stop it from upgrading so long?
I was having a problem with not being able to swipe pages and opening apps for almost 3 weeks, so I downloaded iOS 8.1 to see if that would help but it didn't and now the icloud drive won't stop updating on my 5s.  I unclicked icloud on my laptop and backed up to my computer but that didn't stop iCloud updating on my phone, I've also reset my phone and that didn't help.

The problem is that should iCloud Photo restart, say, through a computer restart, the problem starts all over again. Apparently removing the photo from iPhoto did not do the trick.
Did you delete the corrupted photo from its event and from My Photo Stream as well? Have you deleted the photo completely by emptying iPhoto's Trash and the System Trash?
You could also try to delete the photos from the folder ~/Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/assets/sub/
That will remove the temporary copy of "My Photo Stream" on the Mac from the user library.
The user library is hidden by default. To open the hidden User Library:
    Use the Finder's "Go" menu.
Click "Go", then hold down the options key, until you are seeing "Library" in the drop down menu appear and click it.
In the Finder window that will open navigate to the folder ~/Library/Application Support/iLifeAssetManagement/assets/sub/.

  • Problem when downgrading xorg-server

I'm using xorg-server from testing, but that breaks opengl effects on kdemod4 (and kde4) http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/11351?project=0
Actually, it seems it's libdrm, but that's not the point. I tried downgrading to extra with something like:
    sudo pacman -Sf extra/xorg-server extra/xf86-video-intel extra/libdrm
And it works fine. KDM starts up but when I try to login to KDE4, it just crashes when the splash screen appears. Anyone has a clue how may I debug this? Is it something I forgot to downgrade?
    Thanks

I forced the upgrade after I checked with 'pacman -Qo offending-package' and no package was shown as owner of these two files. Hopefully it will work after a restart.
    EDIT:
CRAP. I only realized AMD has dropped support for my card after I upgraded to xorg-server-1.6 and catalyst-9.4.
Fortunately I still had the old xorg packages in cache. Since the radeon driver doesn't support powerplay this means I will have to stop at catalyst-9.3 and xorg-server-1.5. I wonder how this will work out with future kernel upgrades...

  • [request] xorg-server with Xvnc

I have read the other topic (http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … light=xvnc) concerning this. I was going to create a new vnc package with Xvnc, but when I started reading through the README that comes with Real VNC I realized I don't have the time to get it all straightened out. I've never built a package for Arch before (indeed, have just started using Arch) and am not sure what the most efficient way of creating the package would be. I was hoping to create a package that depends on the already available vnc package; the new one would just include the vnc.so module for X. That was until I learned the whole X server needs to be built at the same time as the vnc.so module. That really complicates learning how to build this package.
I would use x11vnc but it doesn't want to work properly. My Gnome session is supposed to start it when I login, but it isn't. I would prefer to be able to use the vnc.so module any way.

ok, so i'm almost embarassed to post this.  it's actually pretty trivial.  nevertheless, might as well finish what i've started.
    re-statement of the problem:
    1) xorg-server 1.5.3 depends on hal and evdev in order to provide input hotplugging.
    2) input hotplugging can be turned off, as decsribed here: Arch Wiki Xinput Hotplugging Page.  however, x still requires libhal.so.1 at runtime or it fails.  (it took me ages of googling to figure out that this is indeed the case.)
    3) therefore, xorg-server must be rebuilt without hal if you'd like to run v.1.5.3 without installing hal.
    how-to correct it:
    1) sync abs tree
    2) copy xorg-server from the abs tree to your local build directory
    3) remove 'hal' and 'xf86-input-evdev' from the depends array
    4) change --enable-config-{hal,dbus} to --disable-config-{hal,dbus}  (apparently the server has *some* support for input hotplugging through dbus without hal.  apparently, it also sucked.  so my method is to turn off both, entirely.)
    5) makepkg
    6) pacman -U
    7) add xorg-server to IgnorePkg in /etc/pacman.conf.  the next time xorg-server is upgraded, pacman -Syu will give you a warning and the opportunity to exit.  this is your notice to rebuild and upgrade your local xorg-server.
8?) i suppose you could go through the patches that are applied to xorg-server and figure out which aren't needed.  that would be all neat and clean, but probably not necessary.

  • HOWTO: xorg-server with no hal dependency (was: xorg-server-screw-hal)

it annoys me that hal and evdev are hard depends of xorg-server-1.5.3 and autoAddDevices is enabled by default.  i realize the fix is actually fairly trivial, but there's just someting inelegant about installing a package, disabling a feature, then uninstalling the dependencies for that feature.  so here's a PKGBUILD that suits my taste.  maybe it'll make your life just a bit easier.
EDIT: SCRATCH EVERYTHING BELOW.  the change to the patch will almost guarantee failure if you do this my way.  it doesn't change the default config; it removes the configuration option enitrely.  i get 'epic fail' for that one.  also, x still complains and fails to start if libhal.so.1 is missing, even if you're not using it.  grrrr....
p.s.: you'll want to open xserver-1.5.3-AEI-on-by-default.patch, go to line 101, and change TRUE to FALSE.  this turns off autoAddDevices by default.  then run makepkg -g and replace the last md5 sum with the new for the changed patch file.

ok, so i'm almost embarassed to post this.  it's actually pretty trivial.  nevertheless, might as well finish what i've started.
