Stopping pop up windows

How come some pop up windows still appear even if Safari is set up to stop them in the preferences?

Because popups are triggered with JavaScript and Flash, so unless you want to disable both of those, you can't avoid them all. You might find this link useful, as it provides code for custom style sheets to block Flash ads.

Is there any way to stop Pop-Under windows (ads) in Safari 5?
Safari itself seems to stop pop-up windows fine, but some pop-up then go behind the main window, yuck.
I saw a quote from GlimmerBlocker that is does *not* stop pop-under windows.
    thanks

"Because GlimmerBlocker doesn't hack Safari, there is a few things it isn't able to do: adding a block by right-clicking an image, stopping pop-unders, and filtering cookies from 3rd party sites. But you win a lot in stability, and GlimmerBlocker provides much easier methods for adding your own modifications to pages by adding css rules, pieces of Javascript or by transforming the html before Safari receives it. So I'll hope you're happy with the tradeoff."
... but I hear you and will try it, thanks.

  • Yosemite extremely slow. Cannot stop pop up windows

Yosemite extremely slow. Cannot stop pop up windows on any browsers. Considering going back to Maverick My iMack is mid 2011 21.5. I cannot find a solution to this problem

    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide and AdwareMedic.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

These may be helpful in improving Yosemite's performance.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

  • How Stop Pop-Up Window: Allow Fullscreen With Keyboard Controls?

How can I cause the cessation of the pop-up window that asks me, "Allow fullscreen with keyboard controls?"
In the last month or two (January- February of 2013), this black, semi-transparent pop-up has appeared every time I go to full screen in the game Battle Pirates on facebook.
After numerous iterations, this confirmation request has become completely unneccessary and nothing more than an unwelcome annoyance.

    Tom,
Moderators have the authority and privilege to mark answers as correct, in addition to the original posters. ANY moderator here could have marked it that way.
The Bug report/Feature Request link is not a "vote" page per say, but a place to submit a request for a feature you'd like to see added or dropped from Flash Player. It's the best way to voice a concern or "wish" for a feature, since the development team reads the reports/requests. Management who'd make the decision to add or remove something won't read about it here. They WILL hear about it from development.

I first tried the version without the deflated stream (so everything uncompressed) against the online repair tool to check/analyse it @ https://www.pdf-tools.com/osa/repair.aspx
And it says no error found, but the reader still want to save it when closing so i still had no clue at this point.
Fortunately, i finally found what was wrong with my generated PDF.
In my xref table, each object reference was not end by a full EOL, i only did put a newline char.
Now i have "carriage return" "newline" which is the full EOL and the reader is happy and close the file silently.
As suspected i did not follow correctly the specs on xref table
Now i'll go and figure what i did wrong with the deflate filter
    Thanks for your help.

I am talking about iPhoto. In my old Mac even in Books choosing slideshow gives a pop up where you can select a music from I tunes library. In this new one I can stop the slideshow with cursor and it shows music option but it is, as I said dead. Does not response at all to commands.

  • How do i stop the keychain window from popping up it is really annoying?

How do I stop the keychain window from popping up, it is really annoying?

What is the specific message you are getting?
If it's asking for a password, then enter it and you should be good. If you don't know the password, then I would probably recommend reseting your keychain entirely. Your keychain keeps saved password for certain websites and programs but in my expereince the average user is not tremendously affected by reseting the keychain. It's just a matter at that point of reentering your passwords manually if you've gotten used to them populating automatically.
Check out http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1544 for an article on how to reset the keychain.

  • I have pop up windows popping up everytime I click on something and I want to know how to stop it.

In the last few weeks when I click on something a pop-up window pops up. I have to click to close it and re-click on what I want. If I have opened Firefox and click on say open Facebook the pop-up comes up and I close it and then click on Facebook again to open it. If I'm in Pogo and click on a game a pop-up Pops up and I have to close it and click on a game again. The BLUE line at the top of the pop-up windows always has Firefox on it. It does this in any thing that is on line.
Is there a way to stop this I'm ready to change from Firefox to something else if it I can get it to stop.

MPlayerX isn't itself the problem; it was downloaded from a source that packaged adware with it. Click here and follow the instructions, or if desired, run Adware Medic.

  • How do I stop pop-ups in Safari beyond "block pop-up windows" since that does not work

Do I type more details here? Do I take pictures? Change my font? Why????
WHY can't I simply ask a question and get other users to comment or answer the question? You have made everything so much more complicated.
When I go into the Apple store and present these issues, I get silly grins and tee-hees followed by "yeah, this is the way they do it now."
At one point I am asked if I "LIKE" something. Who cares? Just fix the darn computer! What are tags and why?
Apple is getting more like Microsoft everyday.

Pop-Ups windows are effectively being blocked in Safari, but some web-sites have updated their sites to open a window when you click on content on their site.  This is not a Safari issues it is a web-site issue.  I am not sure on how to stop these without stopping other features on the browser. You can get more information about this by clicking here.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop-up_ad

  • How can i stop the sign in to icloud and photostream pop up windows

The pop up windows asking me to sign into iCloud and photostream pop up constantly while im online.  This started to happen after the last update.
I dont want to turn either of those off because i will lose any shared pictures i have.  Is there a way to stop these from popping up all the time?

I don't think you have any choice now.  You can always delete the iCloud account after doing so and not use it.
I'm afraid I'm not sure what else to suggest other than to enter your password.  If you don't know what it is, you'll have to contact Apple support for assistance by calling the Apple account security team for the country you're in: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699.

  • How to stop automatic pop-up window "Firefox wants to use the font "Stone Sans Sem OS ITC TT Semi"?

Everytime I open Firefox I get the irritating pop-up window "Firefox wants to use the Font "Stone Sans Sem OS ITC TT Semi" on the volume, the font is not installed. I installed the font, but I still get it.
The window gives me options "Do not ask again" "Show in Finder" "Don't Allow" "Allow".
I click "Do not ask me again" and "Allow" but I keep getting this every time. How to stop it?! Thanks.

  • Occasionally, when I try to do a Google search, numerous "opening search" pop-up windows appear. I cannot continue typing in my search until I've closed all of these pop-up windows. How do I stop them from EVER popping up again?!

They are small pop-up windows. When I start entering in keywords to search, ever so often, these things pop-up and not just one. Many of them. Popping one upon another upon another upon another. I cannot enter anything new into the Google search box until I have closed all of these windows. And, commonly, numerous ones of them will pop up again when I enter in the next letter in my search.
This is what it says in the pop-up box:
Along the top it says in the light blue margin "Opening search"
Under the above and in a white box it says:
    "You have chosen to open
    [a Windows symbol] search
    which is a: application/json
    from: https//www.google.com
Then on the outline of an inner box, it reads "What should Firefox do with this file?" and it gives the following options:
    Open with ["Browse" button]
    DownThemAll!
Save File [This one is checked as the default]
Then a check-off box with the text next to it: "Do this automatically for files like this from now on.
Under that is an "OK" button that is gray and cannot be checked and a "Cancel" button that can be. I have never done either but used the "X" in the upper right corner of the box to close out this window.
Now I see I have limited options for "This happened" for frequency. It isn't every time Firefox is opened but it is FAR more frequent than "A few times a week". More like several times a day.
