Stopping software update

I have tried to install a HP printer on SL and each time software update tries to find the drivers.
The problem is each time I re-boot, software update pops up asking me if I want to download and install the HP drivers. If I say yes, it tries and once again can’t find them and so the process goes on and on.
How do I permanently stop software update trying to install the Hp drivers?

HI,
Drag this file to the Trash.
com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag the file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.
See if that helps...

Managed preferences are the best bet. You could use Profile Manager or use the mcx command from the command line. I'd strongly suggest browsing over this before delving into MCX though...

(the Workgroup Manager application shown is deprecated, but it's essentially the same with Profiles and running MCX from the command line)

I accidently clicked Install on an update for software I'll never use. It's pretty large and I not only want to just ignore the thing, but stop the download already in progress.
There doesn't seem to be anything in Help on canceling a started download. Is this even possible or is un-checking and Ignoring the only way to keep this monster from getting implemented?

Restart the computer from the Apple menu. It will ask you if you want to continue the download. You can later ignore it from the Software Update or File menu.

  • Stop software updater

How do I stop those mozialla firefox pop up requests to download new software?
is it spyware or adware or a virus or just because I downloaded a new version of firefox? btw, i also recently downloaded youtube ad block software. They look like this...
    https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20141108114441AAVJsIt

I think the real Adobe Air update dialog looks completely different than the one in that Yahoo small discussion (small, black background).
I suggest investigating a possible bad add-on, starting here:
    (1) Open the Windows '''Control Panel''', Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.
    (2) Open Firefox's '''Add-ons page''' using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click '''Plugins'''. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".
In the left column, click '''Extensions'''. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions.
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    Any improvement?
    (3) You can search for remaining issues with the '''scanning/cleaning tools''' listed in our support article: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]]. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.

  • Reinstalling Tiger: Software Update Missing Many Updates

I've seen a few similar topics on this issue, but only in so far as Software Update missing an update here or an update there. I am currently reinstalling Tiger on a Power Macintosh G3 B&W that has been heavily upgraded. The system specs are as follows..
1GHz PowerLogix G3 (using MAChSpeed to enable full processor speed since the included CPU Director software won't work in 10.4.11)
    1GB of RAM
128MB Radeon 9200 Graphics card connected to an LG 1952 display and set to 1440x900 / millions of colors
I'd go on, but the remainder of the hardware upgrades should have no effect on Software Update to the best of my knowledge. Previously I had this machine running 10.4.11, and through the Software Update program I had installed all of the recommended updates, which included numerous security updates, Safari 4.0.3, and iTunes 8.2.1. Everything was running perfectly smoothly, but after having tested several software configurations and having decided on one in particular, I set out to reinstall Tiger from scratch in order to keep things as clean as possible. I've tried several different times now with the same results each time. Once the system is up and running, regardless of whether or not I install MAChSpeed before or after running Software Update, Software Update simply does not provided all of the updates that I believe are actually there. It did see and did allow me to install the following updates..
10.4.11 Combo update (I installed this one separately before any other updates)
    Java 1.3.1 and 1.4.2 Release 2
    iTunes Phone Driver 1.0
    Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update
    Quicktime 7.6.4
    Security Update 2009-005 (PPC)
    J2SE 5.0 Release 4
Java for Mac OS X 10.4, release 5
    [ditto], release 6
    [ditto], release 7
    [ditto], release 8
    [ditto], release 9
Unless Security Update 2009-005 is meant to be a combined security update (doubtful), there are obviously several security updates that are missing. Also, I'm surprised that Software Update saw and installed Quicktime 7.6.4 but didn't see or install the latest PPC versions of iTunes or Safari. Safari 4.0.3 as I understand requires Security Update 2009-002, so naturally it would not see or install Safari without that update being installed first. While I don't necessarily mind installing updates manually (downloading them individually off Apple's support site and then installing by hand), I really prefer using Software Update to better automate the process. Up until now I have never had any problems with Software Update, but this problem is certainly aggravating. My primary concern is that I have no idea what updates are necessary and what updates are not necessary to ensure proper and relatively secure operation of my system, and I have no way of knowing whether or not Software Update will see any future updates (provided that Apple continues to support Tiger for a little while longer). If Software Update is missing crucial updates out of the gate, how can I be sure that it will see any further crucial updates that may hopefully be released?
I know that's part question / part rant, but I've been wracking my brain for the past few days over this one. Any information that could help solve this problem will definitely be appreciated, especially since my B&W is my preferred browsing machine.
Incidentally, my iBook, a Clamshell FW SE, is currently running the same setup that my B&W was previously running.. 10.4.11 with Quicktime 7.6.4, iTunes 8.2.1, and Safari 4.0.3, so as far as I can tell, this shouldn't be hardware related (my iBook is far less powerful than my B&W currently is). Also, a cursory glance at the Installed Updates list on my iBook definitely shows that my Software Update on my B&W is missing many updates.

I reformatted the drive first and did a clean install. I'm currently in the process of downloading the standalone installers for Safari 4.0.3 and iTunes 8.2.1. It's looking like that's the solution at present, but I'm still curious as to why Software Update won't see any iTunes or Safari updates within the current system configuration's capabilities (speaking to both apps possibly being cumulative). I can't see Software Update simply not having those updates because there is newer version out, if indeed they are cumulative, since that would mean that anyone reinstalling or upgrading on an older machine would be forced to perform some of the updates manually where not too long ago they would have been able to simply use Software Update as a "one stop" solution.
Oh well, maybe I'm just being too picky . I've had to deal with running around in circles to find software updates for manual installs for years with Windows systems, and Apple's "one stop" Software Update system was a wonderful, welcome change to that.

  • How to download older updates in Software Update Service?

    Hello,
In our company, we have a mixture of Mac OS X 10.6.2, 10.6.3 and 10.6.4 servers. Due to proxy-restrictions, only one of these servers is able to download updates directly from Apple (this one has 10.6.4 installed). We have set up the Software Update Service on this server to distribute the updates to all other servers and at first sight, it seemed to work fine.
However, we noticed that our Software Update Server is only downloading the most recent versions of all software updates. e.g. Security Update 2010-05 and Security Update 2009-05 are available, but not Security Updates 2009-01 up to 2009-04. They don't even show up in the list of available updates. Since Security Update 2009-05 requires at least 10.6.4 (but Security Update 2010-04 can still be installed on 10.6.2) we're unable to install any recent security update on our 10.6.2-servers.
Is there a way to configure Software Update Service to download older Security Updates? Running a centralized update server offers little benefit to us if it doesn't allow to install security updates on older Mac OS X releases... Updating all servers to 10.6.4 is not an option, as the software running on the servers is not always supported on the very latest Mac OS X releases.
    Thanks,
    Filip

Thanks for the suggestion. I just tried the following:
    - stop Software Update Service
    - remove /var/db/swupd/html and /etc/swupd to restore default settings
    - start SUS again
    - now both "Copy all updates from Apple" and "Delete outdated software updates" were unticked. That should be fine I suppose, as I don't want to download all the updates (e.g. we don't want printer drivers, Final Cut and so no), but only the ones we select. However, we still don't see e.g. Security Update 2010-04 in the list of available updates. Am I missing something here?
2010-05 includes all the previous security updates, I cannot find any reference to a 2010-004 update for Snow Leopard, only for Leopard (10.5). There was a 2010-003 for Snow Leopard, Mac OS X 10.6.4 Update would also have included previous security updates. It looks like there was never a 2010-004 for Snow Leopard.

  • Is there any way to set Software Update to ignore a particular packages?

If Software Update identifies a new version of something which I don't want to install, is there any way of making it ignore that update when it checks next time.
It's not unusual for minor updates to include no security fixes, no fixes for defects which affect me and no additional functionality. In these cases I'd rather not update but I haven't been able to find anyway to stop Software Update from prompting me to install the same version every time it checks.

    Thank you for the reply.
That menu item just sets Software Update to ignore that particular version does it? I did spot it but the dialog which it opens says "You will no longer be notified of new versions of this update." which is not a very clear message but "new versions" made me think that clicking "OK" would make it ignore all future updates for the component and not just the particular version I want to skip.
Sorry, maybe my original post wasn't very clear that it I just want to skip versions I don't see a need to install, not permanently ignore certain apps/components.

  • Clients not updating Software updates

    Hello -
I've got my Software Update Server all configured, I think, correctly.
Updates are downloading (71 downloaded so far, 71 available)
Have pointed my clients at the server using Workgroup manager (computer group) and following instructions on page 89 of the manual. ie entering :
    http://su.domain_name.com:8088/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.
    sucatalog
as the server address (replacing the s.domain_name with my hostname)
But when clients connect - they say that their software us up to date - even though one is on 10.6.1 and the others are on Safari 4.0.3. They are successfully connecting to my SUS (my hostname appears in the title bar of Software Update on the client.
I have check the preference files at /Library/Preferences and the output of
    defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
    is
    http://**MY HOSTNAME**:8088/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog
There is also a preference file in /Library/Managed Preferences with the same setting
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Andrew

I had this same issue today. Apple support walked me through "completely resetting" the Software Update service and it worked. You need to stop Software update on the server, remove the contents of /var/db/swupd/html and /etc/swupd, restart the server and re-setup software update. This will cause all of the updates to download again.
However, I am curious what really fixed the problem and wonder if anyone who still has the problem can confirm this for me? If you look in the /var/db/swupd/html folder, are there 3 symbolic links in the folder for the tiger/leopard/snow lepoard catalogs? (See below...)
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 _softwareupdate _softwareupdate 87 Nov 19 14:19 index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog -> /var/db/swupd/html/content/catalogs/others/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.s ucatalog
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 _softwareupdate _softwareupdate 75 Nov 19 14:19 index-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog -> /var/db/swupd/html/content/catalogs/others/index-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 _softwareupdate _softwareupdate 51 Nov 19 14:19 index.sucatalog -> /var/db/swupd/html/content/catalogs/index.sucatalog
Try recreating them if they are not there and trying again. Let us all know if it works or if my hypothesis is incorrect.

  • Safari 3.1 from software update hangs with 2% installation complete

I tried to update safari via software update and each time the OS restarts to complete the install it hangs around the 2-3% installation complete. I also installed the security update and that seems to have completed properly (although now i'm not sure)
When i restart the mac by holding in the power button the OS boots up but safari won't start from the dock and the update is still listed in software update.
I would download it from the apple download but would like to resolve any problems that might be stopping software update working properly

Did something similar myself. Used timemachine to roll back safari to before the update and used that version to download the update from Apple.
I tried to get the download from a windows machine but I guess Apple were trying to be helpful and detected that I was using a windows machine and internet explorer so wouldn't show me the mac editions of the download. (would have liked a direct link to the other editions (mac/intel mac/PowerPC) on the download page because every search i entered brought me back to the same page

  • Software Update runs every time I log in

How do I stop software update from running every time I log in? I have it set to check for updates weekly (the default), but it starts up every time I log in.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions:
It might be a corrupted .plist.
    First try this:
Uncheck the box for checking for updates.
    Reboot
See if the problem still occurs.
If so, create a new temporary admin account and see if the problem occurs with the new user.

I just did a software update that was apparently for iPhoto. When I try to open iPhoto it stops at "step 5" and will not go further. what do I do?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

    Hi sharkbiscuit79,
Yes your cabinet 10 on the Crediton exchange has already been installed and linked with a FTTC DSLAM cabinet (making it able to provide FTTC fibre broadband) and has been Accepting FTTC orders since December 2013.  PCP10 (with it's DSLAM cabinet within 100meters of it) is locate on the junction of Commercial Road and the A3072.
However by the looks of things your are just too far away to obtain a FTTC (VDSL2) connection, meaning FTTC fibre broadband is not available to you.
Have a look at the Connecting Devon and Somerset Considerations (particularly the last paragraph) - http://www.connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk/where-when-map-conditions/
Your best bet is to talk to Connecting Devon and Somerset to see if there are any further plans to get a fibre based service to your area via https://www.connectingdevonandsomerset.co.uk/contact-us/ (as your area may not be inscope of any further deployment). Best give them your full address and landline number too as they can check if you are within a NGA area.
