Stopping / Starting database instances
Guys
How does one shutdown and start databases from the linux command
prompt.
Many thanks

1. Make sure your environment is set for the correct database
(PATH, ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_SID, LD_LIBRARY_PATH)
2. To shutdown the database, enter the commands below at the
command line:
svrmgrl
connect internal
shutdown immediate
exit
3. To startup the database:
svrmgrl
connect internal
startup
exit

Unable to start database instance from sqlplus
The following is the error message displayed whenever I try to start the database from sqlplus:
SQL> startup
ORACLE instance started.
ORA-12505: TNS:listener could not resolve SID given in connect descriptor
SQL>
NOTE: I am able to startup the database by restarting the OracleService successfully.
Jayanand. You would get this error if the SQL Anywhere engine name (ENG) or database name (DBN) has changed.
Perhaps one (or both) of these was changed when the application was updated?

Can any one kindly help me....
Thanks in advance
Uma PandaORA-01034 ORACLE not available
Cause: Oracle was not started. Possible causes include the following:
The SGA requires more space than was allocated for it.
The operating-system variable pointing to the instance is improperly defined.
Action: Refer to accompanying messages for possible causes and correct the problem mentioned in the other messages. If Oracle has been initialized, then on some operating systems, verify that Oracle was linked correctly. See the platform-specific Oracle documentation. -

The problem you're facing is due to the fact, that between SLES 8 and SLES 9 the threading library was changed.
You can try the following:
logon as <sid>adm
x_server stop
setenv LD_ASSUME_KERNEL 2.4.21
x_server start
dbmcli -U c db_online
If that works you should change your .dbenv_<hostname>.csh of user <sid>adm and set this environment variable.

Stop, start all nodes.
To shutdown database instance on all the nodes in a clusterd env/. I use
srvctl stop/start database -d dbname
Likewise what is the best way for ASM and cluster?
Thanks!there is no command to startup from a single node or group command. Correct? Yes, that's correct.

MaxDb hung at starting database stage
Hi all,
We have NW2004s and Maxdb on linux _86 system.

Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks guys...

HariHi Hari,
for a detailed analysis this is not enough information, but I <b>guess</b> that this is what happened:
you restored the database from backup (for whatever reason... neither a DATA AREA FULL nor a LOG FULL would ever require a restore!) but you left the LOG AREA as it was.
when the database starts it recognizes that there are transactionlogs available in the LOG AREA and starts to recover them. Depending on your LOG AREA size this can really take some time
"Cancelling" a startup is a nice one ... how did you do that? Honestly you cannot actually cancel the startup once it's triggered. What you can do is: monitor if the db is doing anything via x_cons show active (resp. db_cons show active).
In any case: while the database is doing the recovery it's obvious that another startup-command doesn't make any sense - so it's refused with a "-104, DBM command impossible at this time"
If the situation is not resolved by now and this is a production system or the go-life date is due on monday then it time to open a Prio Very High SAP Support message and have this fixed by the support experts.
Best Regards,
Lars -
Auto Start/Stop Oracle Database Lintener DBConslone on Linux
Dear all

it try with following scrip / process but database not starting automatically.
Please any one can provide steps for auto start and stop oracel services on RedHat 4.7
Once the instance is created, edit the "/etc/oratab" file setting the restart flag for each instance to 'Y'.

:bad interperter : no such file or directory
Please forward me process/steps for auto start/stop oracel services:bad interperter : no such file or directorymeans that it could not find the interpreter which should be used to interpret the script.
most probably this is caused by the shebang (#!/bin/bash)
the default location of bash on RHEL (OEL/CentOS) is /bin/bash, which means that the shebang looks correct.
can you make the shebang:
#!/bin/bash -xso shelltracing is put on and execute script again?
this will make clear if it is the shebang in your script, or in another script. -
Databases instances stuck in MOUNT MODE after srvctl start database -d
Hi,
I wonder if anyone can shed some light on why the following scenario is happening in our environment.
We have a 4 node site, configured with RAC on nodes 1 & 2 and dataguard shipping the logs to a standby physical cluster
database on nodes 3 & 4.
Our issue is this:
When the database instances on nodes 1 & 2 are stopped and restarted using this command sequence
srvctl stop database -d SOCPRODCAV
srvctl start database -d SOCPRODCAV
each database instance gets started up only as far as MOUNT mode.
The databases are not opened and i have to go in and do this manually for each instance.
The above command sequence used to successfully restart the database and leave it open for use so i'm wondering how the start
mode has been changed and if there is an area of configuration or view anyone can guide me to look at it.
I provide remote DBA support for this client's and it is possible that another onsite DBA may have changed something.
Any pointers gratefully received.
Regards,
GeorgeSee current configuration as follows
srvctl config database -d SOCPRODCAV -aThis should show you current startup/stop settings as follows
Start options: open
Stop options: immediate
Now you can change current settings if Start option is not "open"
srvctl modify database -d SOCPRODCAV -s OPENReference

After that, the oracle service for the instance stops.
It will startup with nomount and I can mount it with no issue, but as soon as I try: alter database open; it fails.
I ran a validate in rman, and no error were found.
How do I troubleshoot this?Ok, thanks to all for pointers on finding the alert log. Found it. here's the relevant section, I believe:

Windows could not start DBConsole for new database instance
Hi,
I am getting this error "Windows could not start the OracleDBConsoleOracleInstance2 on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the system vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 1".
I installed Oracle 11g on Windows 7 and created my 1st database instance (oracleInstance1) successfully with a listener and service configured. I could access this database using DBconsole URL: https://hostname:1158/em.
I see the services started for:
OracleDBConsoleOracleInstance1
OracleOraDb11g_home1TNSListener
OracleServiceOracleInstance1
Next, I created a second database instance (oracleInstance2) and have configured a new service for this database. I am using the same listener as I intend to use one database instance at any point of time.
However, I got this warning message during configuration:
"Enterprise manager configuration succeeded with the following warning - Error starting Database Control. Please execute the following command(s).
1. Set the environment variable ORACLE_UNQNAME to Database unique name.
2. C:\Oracle\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\bin\emctl.bat start dbconsole"
To start the new database console, I stopped the previously running DBConsole, OracleDBConsoleOracle1 and started the new DBConsole OracleDBConsoleOracle2 and get the above error.
When I try to start dbconsole manually using "emctl dbconsole start", it starts OracleDBConsoleOracle1 instead.
I changed environment variables ORACLE_SID=oracle2 and ORACLE_UNQNAME=oracle2
What am I missing here. Please help!
Thank you.968952 wrote:

What am I missing here. Please help!First thing you are missing is showing us what you did. Instead you just described it, and that leaves a lot of room for questions. Copy and paste from a command prompt can work wonders here.
From a command prompt, enter the following:
set ORACLE_SID=oracle2
set ORACLE_UNQNAME=oracle2

"I am using the same listener as I intend to use one database instance at any point of time. "
Doesn't' matter if you use one instance or 100. The listener was DESIGNED to service multiple instances of multiple versions running from multiple homes. It is nothing but a connection broker. A telephone switchboard, if you will. All you need is a single listener, with the default name of LISTENER, running on the default port of 1521. It will handle all the database instances you care to throw at it. More instances than anyone in their right mind would ever put on a single server. Your server will run out of capacity to host additional instances before the listener runs out of capacity to service them. Especially since your 'server' is really just a toy in the Oracle world. -
Stopping database instance in linux
Hi,
How to stop a single database instance in linux server with out affecting the other instances in the same server.
Thanks,

Solaris10/SC3.2/Oracle10g -- Stopping database instance with CRS
I have configured the crs framework for a 2 node solaris10/SC3.2 cluster running Oracle10g.
All instances start during boot, but during scshutdown I get the following error message:
All the other crs processes shutdown cleanly
PRKP-1002 : Error stopping instance odbtst21 on node lssva004
CRS-0259: Owner of the resource does not belong to the group.

Oct 9 15:36:04 lssva004 CRS-0259: Owner of the resource does not belong to the group.).
I also get this same message when I try to use clrs to disable the resource ( which is the database instance )
Any ideas.
Thank you.Have you changed any of the groups since you installed? In particular, what group did you install the ORCLudlm as (assuming it is SPARC). What about the permissions on the OCR and Voting disk devices/files?
DId it ever work? Have you added any Oracle patches recently?
If the crs commands aren't working, it sounds like it is a problem that Oracle is having rather than a Sun Cluster problem per se. That's why I'm inclined to think it is a permissions problem.
For further debugging, you might have to raise this with Oracle.

It is possibly the network issue, not the problem with the installation/configuration/memory setup.
Try restarting the whoel machine, may be DNS configuration may be corrected after the rebbot.
Thats what the log says "Mon Oct 08 10:01:46 2007

Also start the instance manually after the machine restart.
If it doesn't work, there could be some problem with OS.

Stop and start database for cold backup
Hi,
Database :Oracle 10g R1

I have a RAC database with 2 nodes.
I build this script to make a cold backup of the database. (I will put it in the cron tab).
My question is the SRVCTL will work in this scripts??

ASkikaI need to put a quick policy backup ... and cold
backup it's what I use and it works. And reduces the availability of your cluster.
The problem about RMAN is that we never use it. I
have to learn about it to make scripts to test....
and this will tack me 2 or 3 days...I'd assume that installing RAC didn't go overnight, so why underfund the crucial part of any database system, the backup?
There's even a step by step guide for backup on the Getting Started: DBAs page.
Samples (and changes) on the latest version of RMAN can be found for example in RMAN Enhancements.
Or take a look at this Oracle Magazine article:Faster Backup, Faster Recovery
Backup and Recovery Basics in the user documentation may also be a good starting point.
