Storage and back up advice please

I have an early 20011 MBP, ML 10.8 latest, Aperture recently purchased, Adobe CS5 which I have always used to edit and iPhotos.  I shot RAW and keep .jpeg and.tiff for all photos.  I have bout 30,000 images currently in my iPhotos library.  I think I have merged Aperture with iPhtos library but it is still called iPhotos.
When I put the compact flash in the card reader they are put automatically into the iPhotos library.  The ones I will use professionally I keep in folders once I have edited in CS5.
What I want is to keep ALL images on two external HDDs (double back up) as well as those I will work on on my MBP.
My question is what is the best and most secure way wo get all photos from card to two HDDs.  If I back the whole iPhotos library it takes all night!  Secondly how should I down load from the card, is there a better set of settings than I am using if they are default to the iPhoto library.  These photos are very important, I am content with CS5 to work on them but it is the most secure and reliable storage I need with the best way to back up.  Additionally, of course, I use Time Machine.
Many thanks
Jules

Jules-
It is easy once we avoid two bad practices: managed originals and importing directly into Aperture.
I recommend
• First copy card images to a folder on a hard drive.
• Next eject the card, but do not reformat it yet. This is an important step because while the card is in play errors can cause loss of the originals.
• Now separate the images in the folder into sub-folders, each of which will be a Project. Often all the images are just one Project anyway.
• Next back up the folders of images that will be projects. After two copies exist on different drives (neither of which is the Library drive) the previously ejected card may be reformatted (in-camera, not by computer).
• Only after the above are complete then import each folder as a new Project into Aperture by reference (set the import window to Store Files: in their current location) to one set of the backed up original images that are living in a folder on an external drive.
• Remember to also back up off site to protect against fire and theft.
One should never trust not-yet-backed-up original images to humans' error-prone usage of Aperture or any other images management application (unless of course one has a dual-card camera; or if images are low value and/or easily reproducible).
Good luck!

As Bob says, any iMap service can do this. GMail can, iCLoud mail can too.
Both of these can be used with Mail on any device.

  • HT4859 Storage and Back Up Button Not Appearing

Hello, I do not see a storage and back up button when I select iCloud on my iPad or iPhone.  Is there a required procedure so that this button appears?

It usually means you are either using an phone provided by your employer or you and added your employer's exchanged email account to your phone.  If so, your employer probably installed a security profile preventing you from backing up to iCloud.  (You will probably see a setting called "Profile" in Settings>General near the bottom between Accessibility and Reset.)
You would have to contact your employer's IT department to confirm this.

  • Should I turn on my iCloud storage and back up

Should my iCloud storage and back up be turned on, on my iphone?

Depends. If you routinely sync with itunes on a computer, its not necessary (assuming you back up when syncing). If not, would be a good idea since you have no other weay of backing the phone up. This might be helpful: http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/backup/

  • Start up disk is full, and need new storage and back up strategy

I am maxed out on nothing my iMac and Mac book pro and recognise I need to introduce a new external hard drive into the equation.
I currently have an apple time capsule with 2gb drive, that backs up the 600g iMac and 250g mac book.
I would like to understand if I could point applications such as iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie towards an external drive ( as long as it is always connected to either the machine...or perhaps network so all machines have access to the external drive)....and hopefully I would also be able to access my iTunes library ( on the external drive) via an Apple TV...without any fuss.
I would also like to use my apple time capsule to back up from both the iMac and Mac book internal drives...as well as recognising the data on the external drives that points to the respective computers.....eg the iTunes library etc.
    Is this at all possible???
If so, which external hard drive solutions should I use ( I have seen some mention synology...but looked at the website, and so many models and not sure what I would need)???
And how would I go about lifting and shifting data, redirecting applications to read and write to external drives, and getting time capsule to back up as above.....and possibly even have an additional back up strategy that allows me to take regular copies of all hard drives and keep content in an off site location for data security...possibly in a bootable format???
Welcome all help and advice please.

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • I am trying to decide on storage and back up for my computers

I am trying to decide how best to organize, store, and back up our computers. We have the following:
    1 iMac
    2 Macbook airs
    1 old MacBook pro.
My wife uses her MacBook Air mostly for photos. I am thinking she will put the photos from her old MacBook pro (101 GB) on to an external hard drive and also store new photos that she edits and works with on her new MacBook Air on the same external hard drive.
Essentially all or our iTunes music library is on our iMac (39.5 GB) as well as another iPhoto library of 39.33 GB. I would like to store these on an external drive as well and not have them stored on the computer's HD.
Can you recommend how you might use one or more external hard drives to both keep the photos and music externally, and back up all the other things on the computers in our house?

Consider using a Time Capsule along with Apple's Time Machine software for your backups for all your Apple devices.
Time Capsule is described here.  (There is also a 2TB version.)

  • I am new to LR and needs some advice please

I have been using Raw shooter and have been shy of going over to LR.I am not a hugely knowledgeable user nor that technically minded. I purchased Scott Kelbys, and Martin Evenings book on LR and am learning as I go, I have been reading several threads on this site and I am concerned about all the negativity I am reading about LR being buggy, with problems?
and how it seems that Adobe are not doing enough with LR to address any such issues? I am a canon user and issues relating to Canon raw are a particular worry. I am about to put my entire collection from Raw shooter ( On External LAcie drives) into the hands of LR in the future. Is this a wise decision? Please help.
Also I want to get started if it is the right thing to do, my PC is getting on abit, with 4 yr old tech inside and only 1gb ram. I will soon get somthing more powerful with 2-4 gb ram. my second question is this. I will be running my libraries on external drives only ( LAcie F.A. Porsche).
If I have imported my images without moving folders, with LR 1.2 loaded on my pc. If later I remove LR from it and reload onto a new PC will it see all my libraries again and know all my settings again without issue and without having to re-do everything. If that is the case then I had better wait until i upgrade the Pc, before I start any work with LR, which will be frustrating.??
Apologies for a long question, but I am technically challenged. If anyone can assist me in these areas I would be grateful
    Paul Apps

LR is not buggy and it converts Canon RAW files just fine. I run LR on a PC without any significant issues except speed. LR is too slow in some areas (importing images, browsing thumbs and previews, in particular) compared to other programs such as Photo Mechanic and ACDSee, but it is very stable on a clean computer. Many features need improvement but hopefully that will come in time. Meantime LR is quite good and I bet you will like it. There is nothing better overall.
You should never risk your images to any software or anything else. Keep a backup copy of your originals separate from the copy you use for LR or other software. Plus LR is a non-destructive editor (pixels are not changed) so your images will be quite safe.
As Tomrock said you can transfer your database to a new computer without difficulty. I do recommend a new computer, a 4 year old machine with 1gb RAM will probably be frustrating. Other folks say that a quad core processor and at least 2GB RAM is the way to go. My 2 year old dual core Pentium with 4GB RAM is definitely too slow for LR. You might also consider switching to internal hard drives in your new computer and use your external drives for backups. Internal drives for your images and catalog file will be much faster.
Also Tom's advice about importing a few images at a time and then testing how things work is very good. It is definitely a mistake to import a huge volume of images until your are familiar with LR. It is very easy to delete a small catalog file and start over since a few hundred images imports quickly.
    Good luck.

  • Home set-up for MBA and Apple TV - advice please

    Hi,
I have a Macbook Air, Apple TV and an iPhone 4S. However, most of my media (music and films) is still stored on my old windows laptop, due mainly to lack of storage space on my MBA.
I would quite like to have persistent storage hooked up to my Apple TV, from which I could watch films or transfer them onto my mobile devices as and when necessary.
My question is, what is the best way to achieve this, some people have suggested using a time capsule as a kind of external hard drive, or alternatively getting a Mac mini and have it permanently turned on and connected to the Apple TV.
What is the general consensus as to which approach would be best (and most value for money, and easiest for an apple novice to set-up)?
    Many thanks in advance
    Scott

I have an AppleTV connected to my home theatre. The hardest part of setting it up and configuring it was unplugging all the compenents from the surge protector to replace it with one that had more outlets! With taken care of, I turned on the TV, saw the AppleTV screen, tried out the remote, and went downstairs to my computer that has my music and movie collection.
I set iTunes to launch automatically when my computer starts up and set the energy saver control panel to start my iMac and shut it down automatically at specific times. To stream music to the TV the computer has to be running. Finally, in iTunes I turned on iTunes sharing.  Back upstairs I checked out the AppleTV and it already had found my computer and my music was there. That simple.
Since I originally set it up, Apple has introduced iTunes Matching, a service that puts your music collection (or at least 25,000 songs of it) in the cloud. My wife and I had good reason to be interested int that service and for the AppleTV it has an added benefit. The ATV can stream music from the iTunes cloud - that means my computer doesn't need to be running during the day for me to share music.

  • Insalling storage and back up. exteral storage

My Imac was installed june 3rd.My exteral storage installed june 20th.  will my origonal set up details be included in back up
           Skipper 85

    Skipper,
Please be more specific, what back up application is being used to backup your iMac? If  you use Time Machine then yes, the first time the Time Machine runs it duplicates everything that was originally on the computer.

  • I'm trying to back my phone with iCloud but the message "you can not delete your icloud account because your iPhone is being restored" appears under storage and back up then when I click on storage and back up the icloud back up is grey so I can't clickit

Need help with backing up on icloud. It's just grey the and can't click it.

Sorry, I was gone for a while.  The reason I asked is that many employers will push a restriction to the phone to prevent it from backing up to iCloud.
The only time I've seen this before it was the result of a server issue at Apple's end, and would normally clear up on it's own in 3-5 days.  If you can't wait, you'll probably have to contact Apple support for help with this: http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/contact/.

I don't yet have an audio interface. Any reccomendations and suggestions welcome. USB preferred, nothing flashy just something that does the job.
    Thank you!

    Hi
For this to work, you would need to set up an Aggregate device using Audio MIDI Setup, and then to set Mainstage audio preferences to use this aggregate as the audio input device.
You might do better to get an audio interface with more than 2 inputs?

  • ITunes. Entire music list has the exclamation marks and I can't open music because it cannot be located. I'm 67yr old and need advice please.

I'm 67 yrs old and asking for advice please.
I'm unable now to play the music in my iTunes playlists. 90% of the tunes have exclamation marks now and I can't 'locate' the music. How can I locate the music or remove the exclamation marks on my iTunes music list?

Typical reasons for missing files are, you've deleted the files, they are on a disconnected external drive, or the drive has a changed drive letter, you've moved the folder where the files live in some other fashion, a third party app has rearranged the files, or iTunes has got confused about the layout they are supposed to be in.
Generally you need to work out what has happened, reverse the action and everything will be alright again. If it is something you can't/don't want to undo, e.g. a drive letter change, then as long as you can track down the current location of the folder containing the media then my script FindTracks should be able to reconnect it to iTunes.
