Storage/backups.

I have a late 2011 MacBook pro.  My question is, it has a 500 gig hard drive and at the moment in "About  this Mac/more info/storage" it shows that I have 266.4 gig of backups, thats more than half of the hard drive.  How do I reduce that?
I do run a time machine that is current.
The software is up to date

Then turn off Time Machine when your external Time Machine drive is not connected. Otherwise, Time Machine will continue to create local backups. These local backups will be deleted if your system needs the space, but the only way to prevent them is either have your external drive connected all the time, or turn Time Machine off when not connected.

I'm trying to back up my iPhone to the cloud using iTunes and I get an error message :iTunes could not turn on backup for the iPhone. Check that you are signed into iCloud on this iPhone". I am signed on with 5GB. Just updates to iOS6

    You found the problem!!!
I was using my iPhone for company email a year ago, but I no longer need to do that. I deleted the global MDM(?) and after everything cleared out, the storage & backup tab came back.
    Thanks so much.

Sounds like you have an account, so two options I would say.
Try turning it off, then off and see what options you get, or sync your phone to iTunes and click on the summary and choose the iCloud option.

  • Formatting external drive for storage/backup/video files

    Hi,
I just purchased a 500mb My Book Pro external drive for use with my imac duo which runs Windows XP via bootcamp. This computer is shared by three family with very different skills and needs. My dilemma. I want to format the drive so that the imac can be backed up easily three users. It is formated Fat32 and is supplied with Restrospect Express 7.5 backup software. It would be nice to backup the modestly used windows sector, but that's a secondary consideration. My problem is that one user has a lot of larger than 4 gb video files which are too large the Fat 32 format. My notion is to segment the backup drive so that I leave 300 mb in fat 32 to facilitate backup with supplied software, and segment a second 200 gb drive using mac os extended so that the user can manually move her video files for storage/backup on the backup drive. Is there a simpler solution? For example, if I formatted the entire 500gb as mac os extended, could I still run the retrospect backup software? If not, is there a reasonably priced alternative software? And finally, with either Fat32 or Mac OS extended, can I move files from the Windows platform? Would I be better off just biting the bullet and telling my daughter to make her own arrangements to compress and backup her video files or get her own hard drive, thus leaving the backup drive to the simple factory supplied software solution?

    Hello,
You're indeed in a pickle. If you use Bootcamp and want the HD accessible via the Mac and WinXP, then you don't want to format it as Mac HFS because WInXP wouldn't be able to access it. If you go FAT32 then both WInXP and Mac OS can access it, but you face the dilemma of the 4GB threshold.
If you format as NTFS, then you eliminate the 4GB threshold but then Mac OS cannot access it.
I have a similar dilemma, which is why i use Parallels more than Bootcamp. I have 2 external FW HD's (160GB/250GB), both formatted to Mac HFS. The 160GB i have partitioned as 50GB and 100GB. I have a bootable backup of Mac OS residing on the 100GB partition (yay to SuperDuper!) and some other stuff on the remaining 50GB. The 250GB is exclusive for movies (cough..cough..bittorrent) and for streaming via Orb 2.0 to my Treo. I have WinXP running in Parallels, and Vista Ultimate via Bootcamp. In Parallels, i can access my external HD's via Parallel's Shared Folders but in Vista (Bootcamp) since the HD's are in a non-Windows recognised formatting, they're not accessible (which is a bummer, as i'm loving Win media center).
What you can do is partition the HD the way you're thinking and format (one part Mac HFS and the other NTFS), but my best recommendation is that with the falling prices of HD's nowadays, why not just get a seperate HD do what you want with it. I spied a WD MyBook 500GB USB HD at CompUSA for $129.99 (no mail-in rebate nonsense) and similar good prices at Bestbuy and Newegg.com.

  • Using Iomega for storage/backup, but start up disk still full..???

Purchased Iomega for Storage/Backup for my MacBook (this is my 1st MacBook, was a PC user for years). I am an avid scrapbooker and of course I have tons of photos on my Mac. My hard drive/start up disk is full. I have 1.41 TB left on my Iomega. Why is my hard drive/start up disk full? What am I doing wrong? This Grandma is not too old to learn something new....please help.....

Another thing to note; if you use iPhoto (or Aperture) for your scrapbook photos, any trashed photos will have to be separately emptied from within the application. Emptying the main trash (on desktop) will not empty iPhoto's (or Aperture's) trash.

  • TS3992 Trying to commence first ever Storage & Backup but it fail and messages "The last backup could not be completed." "Last Backup-Never". Any clues?

Trying to commence first ever Storage & Backup but it fails and massages "the Last backup could not be completed" "Last Backup - Never".

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You might try a forced shutdown to begin with, hold down the top and home buttons together until the device shuts down, then restart it.
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.
If this doesn't help, try turning off some items for back up in a pattern to try to establish if your problem is being caused by specific data on your device.
Being able to back up to the cloud can be very useful, especially if you don't have access to a computer or have infrequent access to one, however unless you specifically need to use iCloud for back up, you will find backing up to iTunes significantly more convenient and possibly more reliable.

  • Storage not Storage & Backup

I am not able to back up my iphone.  After downloading the newsest software, when I go to settings>icloud the only option is Storage not Storage & Backup.  My phone is connected to wifi and charging.  Please help!

Thank you!  Unfortunately I dont see Back up anywhere.  It just has:
    my user id
    Set up Family Sharing
    Storage
an area to check my settings
    share my location

  • Cannot find Storage & Backup setting in iCloud

Am I just blatantly missing it or has it moved to somewhere else?
I was trying to check what backup I have, I followed Youtube instruction and looked for Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup. Where the Storage & Backup should have been, I see Advanced > Mail / Share My Location! Totally not the same from when I saw on youtube (or suggested by many other people).
Where can I find this option. Or how should I check for my iCloud backup?

    I see it! Thank you!
One more question. I see message "The last backup could not be completed" right below Back Up Now option. What does it mean? I recently did a restore from backup. Was restoration not completed or was the last actual backup not completed?

  • Storage & Backup Button not found

I am trying to backup my iphone to the icloud and everything I read says there should be a storage & backup button under icloud in settings...I do not have this option on my iphone but do have it on my ipad...What do I need to do?

I had the same problem on my iPhone 4 and discovered it was something my IT department at work had installed on my phone so I could get my work emails on my phone (from Lotus Notes).
The program is called Air Watch.
Can't remember if it was a setting or if they deleted the program completely but since then my button has reappeared and I'm allowed to back-up on iCloud again.

  • Storage Backup Advice

Just curious to know what are the better 3rd party backup programs available. I need to figure out a good, easy-to-use backup scheme for my footage, projects, etc. For some reason, Windows 7 backup is confusing to me.  I have several external drives, mostly eSATA and USB. I have tried online backups, but way too slow for large files.
I work with HDV and tapes for the most part for now.
    INTERNAL
120 GB SSD Syteme drive Wildfire
4 TB RAID 0 (2-disk)  - Capture footage and PPr and AE projects
    2 TB RAID 0 (2-disk)  - Previews and pagefile
    EXTERNAL
1 TB Buffalo drive eSATA - Stock footage, DVD exports, misc
    2 TB GRAID eSATA - Old/Completed projects
    NAS
2 TB NAS iOmega StorCenter ix2 - Web video storage, backups
with 1TB USB3 Drive attached additioanl storage

I use a free program called EZBackitup and find it works perfectly. It can be run manually or scheduled. I've just completed 6 seperate back up jobs with over 3TB of data and EZBackitup performed flawlessly and without the slightest hitch.
Even though one of my back up jobs contains 1.5 TB of data, it takes literally a couple of minutes at most to compare the whole lot and add or remove any changed files/folders, etc.

  • ICloud "Storage & Backup" and Sync relationship

If I enable iCloud "Storage & Backup" on my iPhone, but disable Contacts in the Settings->iCloud panel (like in this screenshot except imagine everything is turned OFF); will the "Storage & Backup" still back up my contacts?  Thank you much-

If you disable Contacts in Settings then that data will not be backed up in iCloud.

  • Will the new iCloud provide storage/backup/sharing for all my files on all my devices?

Will the new iCloud be able to:
Allow me to share/backup/view all my files on all my devices.
Use a public folder to share with staff, friends and family like Mobile Me could do.
    Thx much

    PV,
Thx for your commercial on Apple's iCloud.
Been and Apple user since 1977 and iCloud STINKS!!!!
Let me be clear....I spent $100-125 for MobileMe and would be very, very, very happy to continue to spend that and more for storage/backup/sharing of my files/photos/videos on iCloud.
It is now much worse than Mobile Me, yes Mobile Me was great!!
Very, very sorry that iCloud is very, very bad.
Apple has done a great job providing us with many devices to share our files and documents, but Apple's iCloud does not allow us to share/back-up/view our files.
This is sad, very, very, very sad.

  • HT4910 I have 2 lines and on 1 of the main phone I went to settings then storage & backup automatically it showed how much space i have which was not allot and it also showed the other line storage space. I click on manage storage and it used to show both

I was told that I have 14.9 gb of space on my phone when my total is 15gb. I was adviced to free storage and to click on settings and manage my storage by either purchase more or turning off or deleting some of the back ups. When I went in to settings then to icloud it usually would of showed me both phone storage memory and when I started going down my list and turning off some of the apps from back ups of certain app all of a sudden I couldnt no longer see my phone storage memory or my account name for that matter. Now I only see the other line username and storage space that the other phone has.
What can I do? I used to see the list of all the apps I have on icloud and now its empty and it tells me I have available 13.4 gb available.
    Please advice. Thank you

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • Extra Storage & Backup

I have a flat-panel iMac G4/800, and with the purchase of a new Canon Rebel XT (8MP digital camera), I'm losing hard disk space fast!
I'm looking for an external storage solution that will allow me:
    1) To have a good deal more available hard drive space.
    2) Maintain backups of both my internal and external hard drives.
I've thought and thought and thought about this, and my current thought seems to be two external Firewire drives would be the way to go for this. One would be for expanding my available disk space, and the other would be partitioned and utilized for periodic backups.
Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with this? Is there anything weird about daisy-chaining drives? Should I leave the backup drive unplugged and shut down except for when backups are being made?
I've heard mixed reviews of LaCie drives, but their 250GB seem to be looking good right about now.... Does anyone have any faves, and is there some backup software I should consider to make this easier?
    iMac G4/800 Mac OS X (10.4.3)

As Duane mentions, keeping all your data on one drive does not do you any good if that drive fails. It would be better to maintain a backup or clone on one HD and then archive your raw and modified data on optical disk.
FireWire is definately the way to go. I have read many mexied things about LaCie drives and have a Mercury Elite Pro drive from OWC. They also sell the enclosure so you can buya bare drive on sale somewhere and assemble the drive yourself.
I use SuperDuper to clone my internal to my external and with a clone you can boot from that external HD if needed. Avoid the Prolific chipset and buy a drive with the Oxford 911 chipset instead as it is much more reliable and is Mac bootable. If it does not say it has the Oxford chipset, it does not.
