Storage Captured DV footage in external drive not contained in Project file - How?

How do I store captured DV tape footage in an external drive without being in a Project file?

You could use another program, to do the Capture.
What is the material, that you wish to Capture?
What camera produced it?
What is your OS?
With that info, someone can likely give you a link to a program, that will work for you.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • 2.14 Library on external drive not supported by 3.1 how do I upgrade it?

I've moved and saved projects to external drives and into separate libraries. Upon upgrade to 3 it upgraded my attached drive and the library on the computer hard drive but when I connect other usb drives, it finds the 2.14 library but just alerts that it isn't supported. What can I do? Thanks, John

How are the external disks formatted?
I think A3 is more specific about the disk formatting then A2 was.

  • USB External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop

I have two USB external drives from the same manufacturer. One is for regular storage, the second is for Time Machine and movies.
The first one shows everywhere, on the desktop, in finder and in Disk Utility.
The second drive shows in Disk Utility only. However, it is functioning fine with Time Machine. So it is mounted. I have tried several repairs, and it reports no fault found. So it is certainly functioning correctly, but a setting or error in the operating system is not allowing it to be viewed in finder, or on the desktop.
    Any suggestions.

Correction: Title should be Firewire External drive not showing in Finder, or on Desktop.

  • MBP Hardrive capture requirements w/ FW800 External Drive?

    Hi All,
Im wondering about the hardrive requirements on a 15" Macbook Pro for CS5 Premier Pro. The stated minimum hardrive speed for sd capture is a 7200 rpm HD however my MBP's internal only runs at 5400 rpm. While swapping out the internal HD is not an option, I have a 1tb firewire 800 external drive. Firstly, if I only capture on to this external drive will the entire editing process run smoothly enough?  Is this solution simply a patch or an appropriate resolution?  Furthermore, will I need to have all of my files kept on the external at all times or can I bring them on to my slower internal and work mobiley. Any other comments on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Both of your disks will be pretty slow, so don't complain if there is some jerkiness. For capturing you should be OK, but it is editing that may cause problems, depending on your workflow. Capturing usually implies DV or HDV and for thast you look to be OK.
If you want to edit AVCHD or other complex codecs, this may be considered a sub-par machine and that is your choice. Good luck with it.

Is it possible to have Time Machine backUp computer HD AND external HD connected to Airport Extreme.
    Sorry, but no.
Time Machine will backup your Mac, but not the hard drive attached to the AirPort Extreme.
Time Machine will back up a hard drive only if it is attached directly to your Mac via USB or FireWire.

  • How to backup internal A/V hard drive (not the OS drive) to a 2nd external drive (not the TM drive)?

I'm a new Mac Pro user.  Now running OS X Lion.  Always used Windows platforms before with Seagate hard drives and their included backup software where I was able to setup different backup schedules to back up various drive and file combos individually/separtely.
Here's what I would like to do on my new Mac Pro:
I have TIme Machine already setup to backup my OS X hard drive (internal #1) to external hard drive #1.  that works fine.
I have a 2nd internal hard drive which i only want to use for FInal Cut Pro X media files (video and audio for various projects) and I would like to back that drive up to a different external hard drive.
I do not want to lump these files into the TM backup i have already setup for the OS on ext. drive #1.  I want to keep a backup of my Final Cut media on external drive #2.
Any suggestions?  How do video professionals usually backup their A/V drives individually and regularly (as I am sure most of you do not store your media on your OS drives).
    Thank you!

There are software back up tools like Roxio's Retrospect, though many professionals use RAID systems with redundancy that automatically mirror their main media drive.

  • External drive not letting go

I tend to turn on my external hard drive to backup my data at the end of my work day using Silverkeeper. When the backup is done, I try to eject the two partitions I've created on the drive so that I can turn it off.
Regularly, however, the system claims that one of the two partitions is busy and can't be ejected. This is after all backing up activities are complete and no applications are running.
Often, the external drive will indicate that it's being read constantly even though, once again, nothing's running on the machine. I've had to do a power off as I've lost control of the machine (the swirling ball is spinning) when I attempt to eject one of the partitions.
Any ideas what might be going on?
    TIA,
    David

What you might be seeing is spotlight trying to index your external drive. Depends on what file system are you using on the partitions, spotlight might be unable to write the index file and keep indexing it every time you connect the drives.
To stop spotlight from indexing them, first try adding the partitions to spotlight's exclusion list in System Preference. If this doesn't work, use terminal to create an empty file by typing:
    touch .metadataneverindex
place this at the root of the partitions will stop any indexing, but you won't be able to search that partition at all. Note that the file is invisible so you may want to turn on show invisible files while moving and copying it.

  • Is their another way like to use my time capsule as an external drive not using time machine?thanks

is their another way like to use my time capsule as an external drive not using time machine?thanks

You do not have to use Time Machine.. but the TC is hardly suitable for a NAS.. it has no means to back itself up and is relatively slow. Still that is up to you..
CCC or Superduper are good backup softwares .. and there are a number of others.

Import is just a word for copying photos from the phone to a computer and not that different than what I do in Windows -- although I haven't compared the speed on a large number of photos. If you are importing and using iPhoto, you might try doing it with Image Capture which will allow you to copy them directly to an external drive. It may be faster than doing it to iPhoto but I haven't compared the speed. Instructions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 are shown below.
Connect the iOS device to the computer.
If Image Capture does not open automatically, you can navigate to your Applications folder and open Image Capture from there.
Choose the location to which you'd like to import pictures.
    Click Options.
Click the Options tab if it isn't already selected.
Enable the option "Delete items from camera after downloading".
Note: Deleting photos after importing helps to reduce Camera Roll size, and it improves backup and restore times. You may choose Keep Photos if you wish to import the photos to additional computers.
    Click OK.
    Click Download All.

  • Capturing DV to FW800 External Drive

I have an iMac with a FW800 port and a Canon GL2 using final cut pro 6.0.4; so I need to capture footage from a MiniDV camera to the firewire drive. The drive is a brand new G-Raid2, 1TB. I cannot do this however. I can do it only if the Graid drive is unplugged and only to the system drive, this is not good practice, I know. Final cut pro freezes with the drive plugged into the fw800 port and the minidv deck plugged into the fw400 port. I was wondering why this is happening. Is it because the fw800 and fw400 share a bus? Someone help me out because the reason I got an iMac is because of its fw800 port so I capture to a fw800 drive.

What you are experiencing is the result of Canon's junky implementation of the firewire protocol. You are correct in your guess that the Mac has only one firewire bus to support all firewire connections and Canons often do not play well with other devices on the same bus. The solution to your problem involves isolating or eliminating the camera.
    You have three solutions.
    1. Disconnect the external drive, capture to the internal, disconnect the camera, reconnect the external drive, move the material to the external, edit.
Reverse this procedure if you wish to export video back to tape. Oh, and be sure to shut down the computer as you do any cable swapping - firewire cables carry voltage and you can fry a port.
    2. Get a non-Canon camera or tape deck to use as the capture device. Sonys and Panasonics will most likely play fine with other devices on the same bus. (Though, it is really not recommended)
    3. Get a computer that has the ability to add a second firewire bus via 3rd party cards (i.e. MacBookPro or MacPro).
    Good luck,

  • New Toshiba 3tb external drive not recognized at startup WIn 7

My new toshiba 3tb external drive (with wall wart power) is not recognized at start up (Win7). The message I get is that it is a USB storage device but can not be used until it is formatted (I already moved files to it). If I plug it in after start up it's fine and shows up as a toshiba storage device. I've used the 2.0 and 3.0 ports and it is the same problem (it has wall wart power). I have never encountered this problem with any other usb storage device  (an iomega 1tb and a WD 500gb) always plugged in and recognized at start up.
    Thoughts?

Please provide your complete model number of your system.
By doing so, we will be in a better position to provide you assistance.
