Storage groups & Replication

What is the underlying technology that the app volumes storage replication mechanism uses when setting up storage groups?
Which ports need to be opened between two ESXi hosts (or two groups of ESXi hosts (Clusters))?
I am having issues with replicating to a datastore located on a particular cluster and I was wondering if it could be related to specific ports that might not be open. The error displayed in vCenter is "Cannot connect to host"

Hi,
Just change the server you're pointing at (-Server) and adjust the Where clause as necessary for each iteration. That'll be the quickest fix.
Alternatively you can use ForEach-Object and loop.
Don't retire TechNet! -

Thanks for the quick reply. Server 1 has 4 sg on it that I would love for it to pull. If I did a ForEach-object and loop how would that look? I am not that great at scripting lol

• Using Recovery Storage Group to recover a single mailbox in Exchange 2007 CCR

Hi, there:
Our Environment: Exchange 2007(SP3) CCR
Now we got a task to recover a mailbox which is still on Exchange 2007 now(but it is suspected the owner deleted many emails before he left and these deleted items is NOT recoveralble through dumpster). They want to recover this mailbox to a point
of time where they believe these email items is not deleted at that time.
By reserach below is the steps which can be porformed:
1): Create a RSG and a mailbox database which is linked to the original mailbox database which host the single mailbox that we want to recover.
2): restore the mailbox database backup to this mailbox DB under the RSG.
3): Merge the recovered single mailbox to the existed one.
My question is:
When I create the RSG and the mailbox DB under this RSG using the tool on EMC, can I specify the path of "System folder path" and "mailbox DB file path" on drive other than C:, the C: drive on Exchange CCR active node does
NOT have enough disk space so it has to be created somewhere othan than C: drive?

Hi, Andy:
Thans for your post.
I have a look at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997694(v=exchg.80).aspx.
One thing I have question is when you use cmdlet to create a RSG:
new-storagegroup -Server <Server_Name> -LogFolderPath <path_to_Logfiles> -Name <RSG_Name> -SystemFolderPath <Database_Path> -Recovery.
What should be the <server_name>?
we use CCR, if I want to use this cmdlet to create a recovery storage group on current active node of CCR, do I need to enter the actual name for this active node, or I juts need to enter the cluster name?

• New Mailbox Created in Recovery Storage Group

Using SBS 2003.
Recently created and used a Recovery Storage Group to do a test a restore of a mailbox. I dismounted the Recovery Storage Group but did not delete it. Today, I created 2 new users with the SBS wizard and found their mailbox paths pointed to the Recovery
Storage group. Of course this is dismounted, so no mailboxes are actually created yet.
What would be the best way to fix this? Should I just delete the mailboxes and recreate in the correct store? Would it be better to mount the Recovery Storage group and then try and move the mailboxes, (I'm assuming the mailboxes would be automatically created
once the store is available)?
Once the problem is resolved, should I make sure it's dismounted then just right click on the Recovery Storage group and delete it?

• How to create new storage group and mailbox database on exchange 2007 CCR

Hi, Our Environment:
Exchange 2007 SP3 CCR.
Now I want to create a new storage group with edb file and log files on the new drive.
My plan is as below:
Once we have new drive ready on both active node and passive node,
1): Create new storage group with log files for this new storage group on other new drive from Active Node.
2): Create new mailbox database under this newly created storage group with the DB file on the new drive from active node.
My question is:
1): Do I need to perform above steps from active node only? or Do I need to do it from both active node and passive node?
2): How many storage groups can we create on one Exchange 2007 Enterprise server, we already have 25 SGs in place.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Here are my answers you can refer to:
1. We can just create new storage group on the active node. And it’ll be replicated to the passive node.
We can use the following command in EMS to verify the new Storage Group is being replicated to the passive node:
Get-StorageGroupCopyStatus "Second Storage Group" | Select SummaryCopyStatus,CCRTargetNode
http://exchangepedia.com/blog/2007/08/how-to-create-new-storage-group-in-ccr.html
2. For Exchange 2007 enterprise version, we can have up to 50 storage groups:

• Material Group Replication from ECC

Dear SRMers,
System Landscape : ECC 6.0 and SRM 5.0.
I am doing a material group replication from ECC to SRM using the DNL_CUST_PROD1 customizing object. Before the replication ECC was trying to confirm the target RFC destination(SRM) by prompting a logon. I logged in as myself and the system gave a CALL_FUNCTION_OPEN_ERROR.
I defined the CRM Consumer as SRM in the CRM middleware parameters..
My question is do we need to define the User SRM in SU01 and when ECC tries to confirm the target RFC destination, do we need to login as the SRM User ?
Points will be rewarded for answers.
Thanks in advance,

Hi,
The RFC user which you define in the SRM RFC detsination has to be obviously as SU01 user in SRM.Also the RFC user need to have SAP_ALL and SAP_NEW profile attached.See note 642202 for details.

• Storage Groups

Hello,
When booting from SAN in UCS, what's the best practice when creating the Storage Groups in the disk array?
For instance, VMware: is it best-practice to have one storage group for each ESXi and add its own ESXi Boot LUN (id=0) plus the VM datastore LUNs needed?
Do other environments (Linnux, Windows, Hyoer-V) have anything special in these terms with which to take care of?
Thanks,

It's a security issue. Because the LUN ID can be changed easily on the host, you could essentiall clobber the wrong LUN if your server admin mistakenly changed the LUN ID. Also, once a host is booted up, it will be able to see & access every LUN within the storage group regardless of LUN ID. The significance of the LUN ID matches the host only impacts a host trying to SAN boot.
The two main forms of security enforced in Storage is Zoning and Masking.
Zoning - done on the storage switch, acts like an ACL limiting the scope of what a zone's members can see. A zone will normally only contain one host and the target WWNs. **Who can I see**
Masking - done on the storage array limits "what" LUNs a host has access to. This is done in the form of Storage groups. **What can I access**.
Circumventing either poses a great risk at data corruption/destruction since various operating systems can only read their native file systems. Ex. If you had all your hosts in one storage group (ESX, Windows etc) and tried to only separate them by a LUN ID, a simple 1-digit change of the boot target LUN ID on the initiator could cause a host to not read the filesystem and potentially right a new signature to the risk - overwritting your existing data. Windows can't read a linux partition and vice-versa.
Follow these best practices and your data will be much safer & secure.
Regards,
Robert

• Exchange creates a new logs even no mailbox uses the storage group

We are running Exchange 2007 with 4 storage groups. We have migrated most of our mailboxes to Office 365 (there two web emails need to configure SMTP relay on Office 365) and stopped Exchange backup. However, the Exchange data still increases
everyday because of the log files. In checking the those storages, no one uses storage group 2 and 3, but these two storages have a new log files every day. Why? How can we find out which mailbox uses them?
Bob Lin, MCSE & CNE Networking, Internet, Routing, VPN Networking, Internet, Routing, VPN Troubleshooting on http://www.ChicagoTech.net How to Install and Configure Windows, VMware, Virtualization and Cisco on http://www.HowToNetworking.com

An easy way to see what mailboxes are being used on your system is to check your message tracking logs - run the following:
Get-TransportServer | Sort Name | % { get-messagetrackinglog -Start "11/3/2014" -ResultSize Unlimited } | Select TimeStamp, Sender, Recipients, MessageSubject, EventID, TotalBytes, RecipientCount, RecipientStatus, ServerHostName, MessageLatency*,
ConnectorID
This should get you the information if mailboxes have been used for sending or receiving email. If you have any retention enabled in your system, this will cause messages to be removed from mailboxes. And there is the common daily calendar management
that the systems does. If you have the recoverable items and recoverable mailboxes in place, these will be removed over time. And finally, Exchange closes log files so that the database can be recovered to a certain point in time, regardless of
whether there is traffic on the database. So even if you have removed all access from your mailboxes, and in fact even if you have removed all your mailboxes, you will have transaction logs being closed.

• 2010 Disable circular logging with no storage groups

I have SBS 2008 and the backup wizard will not complete because of the error Disable circular logging in Exchange. I had previously removed most of exchange because of disk space including the databases.
So there are no storage groups to remove them using the console . Any suggestions would be fantastic Cheers Todd

Hi 15topster,
There are no storage groups in Exchange 2010 onwards, databases are directly under Organization\Servers and logs are generated for individual DBs seperately.
You should be able to get the option under Database properties or use below shell command to do it.
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH11310
To use the Exchange Management Console to disable circular
logging:
1.
In the console tree,
navigate to Organization Configuration |
Mailbox.
2.
In the result pane, on
the Database Management tab, select the database you want to
configure.
3.
In the action pane,
under the database name, click Properties.
4.
Click on the
Maintenance tab
5.
Clear
the Enable circular logging check box.
6.
Click
OK.
7. To make your changes
to the circular logging settings effective, Restart the
Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, or dismount and then mount all of the databases in the storage group.
To disable circular logging using Exchange Management Shell, run the
following command:
Set-MailboxDatabase -Identity "Database Name" -CircularLoggingEnabled $false

• Exchange 2007 Storage Groups & Databases

Hi There!
So I have an Exchange 2007 Standard set up. No problems or anything like that but just after some clarity over storage groups and databases.
I have spent days trying to find the answer and even tried to call MS for help (waste of time).
I understand it is best practise to have 1 database per storage group for performance and for ease for restorations and troubleshooting through system logs. Also understand that each database is pretty much unlimited (16Tb).
QUESTION
But say you have 2 databases under one storage group are there any databases size restrictions or are the databases connected in anyway or are the databases still unrestricted in size?
Does the Storage Group have anything to do with database sizes or restrictions apart from performance and general admin or is the Storage Group just a container/holding place for databases?
Many thanks for any light on this
Your LocalITBod

Storage groups allow you to group databases logically and all databases in a single SG share transaction logs.
Individual databases in each SG are independent of each other. The size limits are applicable at each edb file level.
For example, please refer this article carefully...
http://blogs.technet.com/b/haroldwong/archive/2007/05/04/exchange-server-2007-standard-edition-unlimited-database-size.aspx
With the introduction of Exchange Server 2007, we made some changes to the Standard Edition so that we now support up to 5 Databases and up to 5 Storage Groups with Standard Edition.
Each of these Databases has a size limit of 16 TB (considered "unlimited" for all intense and purposes).

• Transation type group replication

hi
experts
We are on CRM 4.0, E-commerce, ICSS
1.Do we need to replicate Transaction type group created in IMG for ICSS B2B?
If it is to be replicated manually can u please suggest me the process steps
2.Even we need to replicate the Product Catalog
We have tried to assign Transaction type group in Transactions tab of B2B Web shop
but we are unable to find our transaction type group created in IMG
please suggest us further
Your help will be highly appreciated
thanks
and regards
venugopalrao

Hi Venugopal,
Please find below my answers to your queries.
1. What do you mean by Replication of the Transaction Type Group? Replication to ECC / R/3 or TREX?
I guess you are maintaining the transactions in the transaction type group in shopadmin. It is necessary, but not mandatory to maintain the transaction type group here.
2. So, what is the problem in replicating the Product Catalog? If you have any specific error that you receive, then please mention the same, else please go through the C14 Internet Sales document for details on Product Catalog replication.
In Transactions, you will only your transaction type, not the transaction type group. Here, select your transaction type and assign the same here.
Thanks & Regards,
Nelson

• Active stanby cache group replication on same machine

Hi,
To validate a replication design, I am trying to set up an active standby pair of a cache group on a my linux(ubuntu) laptop. I have setup two datastores on the same TT instance - cgdsn and master2
I created a usermanaged cache group on the active TT DS and started an active standby replication using following sql:
command>create active standby pair cgdsn on "simu-t61" , master2 on "simu-t61" return receipt STORE cgdsn PORT 21000 TIMEOUT 30 STORE master2 PORT 20000 TIMEOUT 30;
I read in an earlier thread that replicating on same machine will require ports to be specifically provided to the replication command.
Here is the output to check the status of the master datastore:
<output>
oracle@simu-t61:~$ ttrepadmin -showstatus cgdsn_tt70
Enter password for 'ora':

Hi,
You can find the replicated categories in trascn COMM_HIERARCHYand double click in product categories (R3MATCLASS). .Then go to backend R3MATCLASS node and click on category.
Also can Check in table- COMM_CATEGORY.

Hi,
I found that the best place for downloading additional information from R/3 to CRM is the CRM0_200 exit (the filter exit actually). It is the only place that I found in the code where I can be sure that all R/3 changes are saved in the R/3 database.
--> You'll have to select the data from the database and enhance the bapi-structures (T_BAPISTRUCT) of the function modules parameters.

• Risk to recreate DFSR Group Replication in Windows 2008 R2

DFS replication group has been deleted and I need to recreate it. Now what I just want to make sure if I recreate the replication group are all folders between my 3 servers will resynch without probllem?
I mean I hope by doing that it will not create a mess. Is someone can confirm that I can recreate DFS Replication Group without problem. The used topology is full mesh.
Thanks

Hi,
If the replication group is deleted clearly, you will not have any issue in creating it - if it is not deleted clearly you will fail to create it with the same namespace or fail to create it with message "replication group already exists".
In creating a replication group, it will ask for a primary folder target and files with be replicated from it to other members regardless which server has the newest version. So if any newer files exist in other members you should backup them or overwrite
the old versions before creating the replication.
