Storage issues during live clone in Server 2012 R2

We just set up a new 2012 R2 cluster and we are having troubles with live cloning. I have seen it work in our environment but usually it fails.
We get this error in our cluster events:
Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume8' ('Volume8') has entered a paused state because of '(c0000435)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished.
and the clone fails with:
Error (2916)
VMM is unable to complete the request. The connection to the agent ServerName was lost.

The storage is a Dell EqualLogic PS6500 and its connected to two S55 Force 10 48 port switches.  The client side of the network is hooked to two Cisco 2960G 48 port switches.
I can't find any information on error c0000435.  Has anyone head of this issue?

Hi,
I am Chetan Savade from Symantec Technical Support Team.
Few issues have been reported with the older version of SEP. I would recommend to test the connection using the latest version of SEP. SEP 12.1 RU4 MP1b is the latest version.
Reported issues:
Cluster environment does not fail over
Fix ID: 2731793
Symptom: A cluster environment does not fail over when Symantec Endpoint Protection client is installed due to inability to unload drivers.
Solution: Modified a driver to properly detach from a volume when the volume dismounts

  • Wildly flickering pagesize with Scrollbar issues during Live View CS5.5

DWCS5.5 keeps crashing on the system I am using on Windows 7 ultimate. The menu at the bottom of the preview pane (in split view) that allows you to select your page size keeps jumping back and forth rapidly and the scrollbar keeps "wiggling" like it can't make up it's mind. It completely locks up DW and I am forced to restart the app. It's happened about 10 times today alone, so I figure there is something wrong. Has anyone else had this problem? I will try to figure out the exact steps it takes to reproduce it, but I think it has something to do with resizing the preview pane manually.
Before I spend too much time trying to resolve the issue, I figured I would ask. Meanwhile, I'll see what I can find out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Install Windows Server 2012 R2 VM on Storage Spaces with Storage Tiers

    Hey guys
In my small/medium sized company we will soon update to Windows Server 2012 R2. I would like to implement virtual servers using Hyper-V. I didn't find a lot of information about Hyper-V in combination with storages spaces and autoamted storage tiers.
And this is very confusing to me as it seems to me that this would be the best practice as it is the most cost-efficient and most elegant solution.
    My ideal scenario:
With Hyper-V I virtualize two Windows Server 2012 R2 instances. So two separate virtual machines.
I use the following disk setup:
    1x cheap HDD  40GB for hyper-v server 2012 r2 core.
    2x SSD 200GB (enterprise-grade)
    2x HDD 4TB (7.2k, enterprise-grade)
    Step 1:
I will install Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 Core on the 40GB HDD. Via command line, I will create a storage pool with automated tiered storage using the SSDs and the HDDs in mirrored mode the following way:
With Tiered Storage, I create a storage pool containing the SSDs and the HDDs. Then I create storage space A (1TB) and B (3.2TB) with the SSDs in a mirrored setup and the HDDs in a mirrored setup. The SSDs for the „hot files“ and the HDDs for the „cold files“.
    Step2:
Ontop of the storage space A I want to install the first Windows Server 2012 R2 instance with Active directory. On storage space B I want to install the second Windows Server 2012 R2 instance for a business application to run on it.
    Conclusion:
The SSDs are mirrored and therefore one SSD can fail.
The 4TB HDDs are mirrored and therefore one HDD can fail.
I have a fast and easy scalable environment.
But in the Internet I found many information that it’s not possible to install an operating system onto a storage tier.
    Question 1:
    Is this setup possible?
    Question 2:
If this setup is possible, why is not everyone doing it?
    Question 3:
Is it possible to do Step 1 over a GUI from a remote machine?
    Question 4:
If the creation of Storage Tiers in the Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 is not possible. Would it work to use a Windows Server 2012 R2 as a parent system on the 40GB HDD? To do Step 1?
I would gladly get some feedback of people knowing Storage Tiers well.
    Thanks a lot!

I would absolutely prefer a GUI. But a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Licence allows you to run two VM machines.
It also grants you a physical installation ("POSE" in the licensing documents). You can buy one copy of WS2012R2 Standard, install it on the hardware, enable Hyper-V, and then operate two virtual machines with WS2012R2 Standard ("VOSE"
in the licensing documents). The only restriction is that the management operating system (POSE) can only run services and applications meant to manage the virtual machines and/or the management operating system. The Hyper-V Server license is the same way
so it's not really any different.
In short, given the benefits of the GUI at your stage of learning, you have no solid reason not to install the full system and take advantage of it. You can disable the GUI later once you get your footing. Or not. Whatever suits you. However, in response
to your Question 3, you can do this all remotely. Once you get WS2012R2 installed in a guest, you can use it to manage the management operating system if you want. There are many options.
But then I would also need to have redundancy on the 40GB HDD as if this HDD brakes, all others brake as well?
Yes, you're going to want some redundancy for the management operating system. But, you've listed 5 drives in your original layout. You don't really have a 5-bay system, do you? Is there an empty sixth bay? Could you not get two 40 GB drives instead of one
    and use hardware RAID-1?

  • Storage Server 2012 best practices? Newbie to larger storage systems.

I have many years managing and planning smaller Windows server environments, however, my non-profit has recently purchased
two StoreEasy 1630 servers and we would like to set them up using best practices for networking and Windows storage technologies. The main goal is to build an infrastructure so we can provide SMB/CIFS services across our campus network to our 500+ end user
workstations, taking into account redundancy, backup and room for growth. The following describes our environment and vision. Any thoughts / guidance / white papers / directions would be appreciated.
    Networking
The server closets all have Cisco 1000T switching equipment. What type of networking is desired/required? Do we
need switch-hardware based LACP or will the Windows 2012 nic-teaming options be sufficient across the 4 1000T ports on the Storeasy?
    NAS Enclosures
There are 2 StoreEasy 1630 Windows Storage servers. One in Brooklyn and the other in Manhattan.
    Hard Disk Configuration
Each of the StoreEasy servers has 14 3TB drives for a total RAW storage capacity of 42TB. By default the StoreEasy
servers were configured with 2 RAID 6 arrays with 1 hot standby disk in the first bay. One RAID 6 array is made up of disks 2-8 and is presenting two logical drives to the storage server. There is a 99.99GB OS partition and a 13872.32GB NTFS D: drive. The second
RAID 6 Array resides on Disks 9-14 and is partitioned as one 11177.83 NTFS drive.
    Storage Pooling
In our deployment we would like to build in room for growth by implementing storage pooling that can be later
increased in size when we add additional disk enclosures to the rack. Do we want to create VHDX files on top of the logical NTFS drives? When physical disk enclosures, with disks, are added to the rack and present a logical drive to the OS, would we just create
additional VHDX files on the expansion enclosures and add them to the storage pool? If we do use VHDX virtual disks, what size virtual hard disks should we make? Is there a max capacity? 64TB? Please let us know what the best approach for storage pooling will
    be for our environment.
    Windows Sharing
We were thinking that we would create a single Share granting all users within the AD FullOrganization User group
read/write permission. Then within this share we were thinking of using NTFS permissioning to create subfolders with different permissions for each departmental group and subgroup. Is this the correct approach or do you suggest a different approach?
    DFS
In order to provide high availability and redundancy we would like to use DFS replication on shared folders to
mirror storage01, located in our Brooklyn server closet and storage02, located in our Manhattan server closet. Presently there is a 10TB DFS replication limit in Windows 2012. Is this replicaiton limit per share, or total of all files under DFS. We have been
informed that HP will provide an upgrade to 2012 R2 Storage Server when it becomes available. In the meanwhile, how should we designing our storage and replication strategy around the limits?
    Backup Strategy
I read that Windows Server backup can only backup disks up to 2TB in size. We were thinking that we would like
our 2 current StoreEasy servers to backup to each other (to an unreplicated portion of the disk space) nightly until we can purchase a third system for backup. What is the best approach for backup? Should we use Windows Server Backup to be capturing the data
    volumes?
Should we use a third party backup software?

    Hi,
Sorry for the delay in reply.
I'll try to reply each of your questions. However for the first one, you may have a try to post to Network forum for further information, or contact your device provider (HP) to see if there is any recommendation.
    For Storage Pooling:
From your description you would like to create VHDX on RAID6 disks for increasment. It is fine and as you said it is 64TB limited. See:
Hyper-V Virtual Hard Disk Format Overview
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831446.aspx
Another possiable solution is using Storage Space - new function in Windows Server 2012. See:
    Storage Spaces Overview
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831739.aspx
It could add hard disks to a storage pool and creating virtual disks from the pool. You can add disks later to this pool and creating new virtual disks if needed.
    For Windows Sharing
Generally we will have different sharing folders later. Creating all shares in a root folder sounds good but actually we may not able to accomplish. So it actually depends on actual environment.
    For DFS replication limitation
I assume the 10TB limitation comes from this link:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/csstwplatform/archive/2009/10/20/what-is-dfs-maximum-size-limit.aspx
I contacted DFSR department about the limitation. Actually DFS-R could replicate more data which do not have an exact limitation. As you can see the article is created in 2009.
    For Backup
As you said there is a backup limitation (2GB - single backup). So if it cannot meet your requirement you will need to find a third party solution.

  • Server 2012 R2 - The system failed to register host (A or AAAA) resource records (RRs) for network adapter

We seem to be having an issue recently after introducing new Windows Server 2012 R2 servers where they fail to register DNS correctly. The Windows Firewall is off and the servers are on the same VLAN with no firewalls between them.
When I do an ipconfig /registerdns or wait 24 hours for the system to try we get the following error:
The system failed to register host (A or AAAA) resource records (RRs) for network adapter
    with settings:
               Adapter Name : {4A0ECF05-193F-4BEA-AA46-BEC593BA752B}
               Host Name : SRV-DATA
               Primary Domain Suffix : internal.local
               DNS server list :
    192.168.0.50, 192.168.0.42
Sent update to server : <?>
               IP Address(es) :
                 192.168.0.99
The reason the system could not register these RRs was because the DNS server contacted refused the update request. The reasons for this might be (a) you are not allowed to update the specified DNS domain name, or (b) because the DNS server authoritative
for this name does not support the DNS dynamic update protocol.
To register the DNS host (A or AAAA) resource records using the specific DNS domain name and IP addresses for this adapter, contact your DNS server or network systems administrator.
On our DNS server we have set for the internal.local zone Secure Updates only so that looks good because it is Active Directory that should be handling this authentication to update the record I assume. Just to mention that when also doing an ipconfig /regsiterdns
the update fails within a few seconds.

This issue is only affecting Windows Server 2012 R2 clients and testing with Windows Server 2008 R2 clients works no issues. So is this a mis-configuration or a bug with Windows 2012 R2? I have checked all DNS settings on client / server which all look good

  • Windows Update fails on Server 2012 R2 Virtual Machine

I have set up a virtual network with two virtual machines. The first VM is Server 2008 R2 and is set up as a domain controller. The second VM is Server 2012 R2, and has been joined to the domain.  The DC (TestVM1) is also set up as a DNS server.
From TestVM2 (Server 2012 R2), I am able to log in using a domain login, and I am able to browse to a public website.
I was able to run Windows Updates from TestVM1, but when I attempt to run Windows Updates from TestVM2, it fails.

I am having the exact same issue. Fresh build of Server 2012 R2 from the Microsoft Volume Licensing ISO. I tried before and after joining to the domain. Same error every time.  Firewall is turned off. No AV. We do have a cloud proxy service, but I bypassed
that as a test and got the same error message.  I also tried to stop wuauserv and cleaning out the folder and starting it back up.  No joy as well.  This is a VM server running on ESXi 5.1.  Server 2008 servers dont seem to have
an issue.  Server 2012 server don't seem to have an issue.  Only this new Server 2012 R2 server.  My logs are below:

After all VPN and Anywhere Access where setup on the server i when to a PC that is inside my office network and browse on Internet Explorer to the URL to connect this PC to the server and make it part of the domain.
But when i browse to the http://MYSERVERNAME/connect im not getting the Windows Server page with the option to download the windows connector. Instead i get a login pop-up saying "iexplore" and "digest". I try to create a user on the server
and use that user login details on this login box, but even then, the only thing i get is a blank page saying a HTTP Error 404.
So can someone please help me on this? Any advice on how to solve this problem in order to show the normal Windows Server connect page?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Based on your description, please refer to following operations and troubleshoot this issue. Then check if
can help us to narrow down the cause of this issue.
    Please type
http://server-IP-address/connect in IE. Then check if encounter the same issue.
On the Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, please open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. Navigate to Sites, then right click Default Web Site and select
Edit Bindings… In Site Bindings, select Port 80 and click “Edit…” button. Would you please provide a screenshot of the Edit Site Binding (Port 80) that you can see?
    Then please click
Connect which in the list of Default Web Site. In the mid panel, select
.NET Authorization Rules and double click it. Then please check if all users were allowed.
By the way, would you please provide a screenshot of the login page when you browser
http://servername/connect? It may help me to understand this issue clearly.
Meanwhile, please logon a problematic client computer and navigate to the path: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows
Server\Logs folder. Then check if there is Computerconnector log file. If there is, please check it if can find some clues. (Please note: the log file is a hidden file. Please open Control Panel, select Folder Options, select View tab and check Show hidden
files, folders and drives. Then you will be able to find the log file.)
If any update, please feel free to let me know.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    Justin Gu

  • How to create a Pooled VDI infrastructure using Win server 2012 as VM image?I have followed the "usual" way to build a pooled VDI desktop using Win7 or Win8 with success, but it fails when I use an image of Win Server 2012 as VM

    Hi,
Thank you for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
Can you specify the error which you are facing during VDI setup for server 2012?
I might think that you need to check the memory setting for server 2012, as might happens that due to less memory you can’t setup the VDI setup properly.
Memory: If the Master VM is configured with static memory, it must have at least 1024 MB as startup RAM. If the Master VM is configured with dynamic memory, the maximum RAM must be at least 1024 MB.

  • Server 2012 - Clustering CSV Config advice

We have a Dell VHDX Server with 2 server blades (This has shared storage built in)
I've installed Server 2012 Datacentre on both servers, configured a cluster (My first!)
I have a number of HDD's in the chassis and hardware RAID is built in.
A file-server VM, print server as well as other miscellaneous VM's will be installed on the cluster.
What would be the ideal config for the CSV's? Should I create a RAID CSV exclusively for the VM's themselves to reside on?
Then separate RAID CSV's for each data requirement?
What about the SQL Server, should that have its own separate CSV? (Its not heavily utilised)
For the File-server, should the primary group shares be in the file-server VHDX, or a separate VHDX for each?
Should I consider using SMB 3.0? and how would I configure/design that?
    Any advice or suggestions appreciated.

Looks like it's an extended version of a post from here:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/2d7cd5b0-cbe5-4dcd-8ed1-759c12cc81ae/server-2012-csv-raid-advice
    1) Don't go for multiple LUNs as that's an effective way to steal IOPS from your config. Put all spindles into RAID set and create one RAID10 LUN to host one CSV. Reasons are listed with the link above.
    2) Don't create multiple "islands" of storage. Hell to manage and lower performance.
    3) Don't separate moderately loaded SQL Server VM from other ones.
    4) You map SAS disks AS IS, creat Clustered Storage Spaces, create a CSV, you create file server VMs and keep shared content on a VHDX stored on CSV. See:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732181(v=ws.10).aspx
With R2 you can use shared VHDX instead of iSCSI running on top of your storage.
    5) With two blades you cannot use SMB 3.0 as you cannot run it in a loopback. See:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/josebda/archive/2012/11/14/windows-server-2012-file-server-tip-avoid-loopback-configurations-for-hyper-v-over-smb.aspx
With 4 blades you could in theory assign pair of blades to become Hyper-V hosts and another pair to become SoFS set but there's no point in doing this: you'll steal CPU resources from your hardware config (2 boxes instead of 4 running VMs) and make everything
slower (1 GbE interconnect built-in into VRTX). Use Clustered Storage Spaces as that was the idea behind whole VRTX thing.Hope
    this helped :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • Error when pre staging RODC server 2012 R2

    Hello,
I am having an issue pre-creating a Windows Server 2012 R2 RODC in my new domain tree.  I have a forest which runs with server 2012 servers and the FFL and DFL are 2003.  I needed to make a new security boundary so I created a new domain tree
and used server 2012 R2 as the OS for the first DC. That works fine, but when trying to create the RODC I see the error at the very end of the wizard:
The operation cannot continue because a required object was not found in Active Directory Domain Services: CN=Partitions, CN=Configuration, DC=Contoso, DC=com;onelevel;(&(ncName=DC=DomainDnsZones,DC=adatum,DC=com)(msDS-NC-Replica-Locations=*))".
I do have 2012 RODCs in the child domain of the forest but not 2012 R2 RODCs.
    any help is appreciated.
    thanks!
    Franz

    Interesting.
When running the command I do not see the DomainDNSZone for the new domain tree.  This must be why it cannot create the RODC.
For what its worth, this DNS zone is not set to replicate in the forest. Perhaps I should change this setting?

  • Cloning Windows Server 2012 R2 Std for Tier-1 Microsoft application template ?

    Hi People,
Can anyone here please suggest me what is the best way to clone Windows Server 2012 R2 Std edition to be a golden VM image or template ?
I want to use this VM image that I have created and patched so that I can deploy Tier-1 server application like : 2013 SharePoint server, Lync, Exchange Server 2013 and also domain controllers.
The Underlying Hypervisor is VMware vSphere.

    Hi,
Sysprep is a commend line tool that removes unique information from your Windows installation so that you can safely reuse that image on a different computer.

  • Win multipoint server 2012 ...r2?

there are a slew of great updates that happened to hyperv in server 2012r2, but an update for mutlipoint server r2 never came out.. i am wondering if there will ever be a R2 build and if not when we can expect to see these features added? i can also live
with using server 2012 r2 and being able to somehow install and manage clients via multipoint admin ...

Amen to that...Windows 8.1/Server2012R2 add so much to the environment.  I have a bad feeling Microsoft is going to go a different direction as they focus more on the cloud.  Such a shame...WMS is a great product for education, but it seems like
throughout its development cycle it keeps getting overlooked.  I'm guessing that's due to limited market penetration as well as a major lack of marketing.

The only unique thing about running things in ConfigMgr is that it uses the local System account. Other than that, ConfigMgr simply runs what you tell it to run so if it's not meeting your expectations, then what you are telling it to run is what needs to
    be troubleshot.
You should add logging to the msiexec commands and should review the event logs. Beyond that though, this is specific to SQL Server uninstallation and thus for support on troubleshooting SQL Server uninstallation, you should post in a SQL Server forum.
I know that doesn't explicitly help, but the problem doesn't lie with ConfigMgr so there's not much more to say. You could try running this using a task sequence though with a single run command-line task that specifies alternate credentials to avoid running
    it as local System.

  • First cluster - Server 2012 r2 - storage spaces issues

    Hi Everyone
We just purchased two new servers (Lenovo RD640's) and an external SAS JBOD enclosure (the Lenovo SA120), and we would like to set up a 2012 r2 failover cluster with clustered storage spaces as the shared storage.  Currently they are
on their own domain with the virtual active directory server residing locally on one of the servers.
Preface: I've created and destroyed the cluster and storage spaces multiple times trying to solve this issue, so I don't know if I may have "leftovers" from those attempts now causing issues for me.
I can create the cluster, and it passes validation, and can create a clustered storage pool, but every time I try to create a virtual disk (either through the Failover cluster manager, the server manager, or powershell), it won't attach.  If
I try to manually attach it I get the message: "Error attaching or detaching virtual disk: Failed to attach virtual disk to <node name>. Access denied"
Finally (and I don't know if this is related or not), when in storage spaces on the server manager, there is a gold banner at the top that says "Incomplete communication with cluster <cluster name>. The following cluster nodes or clustered roles
might be offline or have connectivity issues: <cluster name>"
I'm logged in with full domain administrator credentials, and have been running my head against this wall for a few days now.  Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for your responses. Here is what I have to report:
When I destroy the cluster, and create the storage spaces on just one of the two servers (with the other server powered down), I'm able to create the storage pool - using all the HDDs and SSDs - and virtual disks (both tiered and non-tiered) without issue.
As soon as I create the cluster again, the virtual disks become "detached", and I'm back to the situation described initially.
@Apamnapat, here's the output of the powershell commandlets you suggested:
    PS C:\Windows\system32> get-storagepool | fl *
