Storage Migration

Hi Experts,
We have SAP ECC 6 with Oracle 10g and HCM module is implemented.
We are planning to migrate our storage from EmC2 to NetAPP.
Can anybody give me the idea how to carry out the task.
Thanks in advance.
Biswajit

Hi,
You need to perform system copy in order to migrate your system on new storage.
Thanks

  • Unable to carry out storage migration in VMM

    Hi,
I am trying to carry out storage migration using VMM but I get the following error message:

I'm quite new to VMM so could someone explain what the problem is as it seems to suggest there are missing snapshot but I could not see any missing (there are two snapshots)
Any help woulf be greatly appreciated :-)

Hi, did you manage to resolve this issue? I have a very similar issue where I have what looks like a parent checkpoint on a VM but the avhdx files have been remove or lost so I cannot remove this checkpoint. I cannot do anything with the VM whilst its there,
like migrate and backup using DPM.
    Thanks.

  • SCVMM 2012 R2 RU3 - Live storage migration failing with error 12711 if cluster resource name is not in form of "SCVMM vmname "

At the end of live storage migration in SCVMM 2012 R2 RU3 getting error:
    Error (12711)
VMM cannot complete the WMI operation on the server (hypervhost1.domain.local) because of an error: [MSCluster_Resource.Name="SCVMM test-vm"] The cluster resource could not be found.

Resolve the issue and then try the operation again.
Storage migration actually succeeds and after Repair/Ignore and Refresh, the VM shows up ok in VMM, with the VHD in new location.
If VM is offline, storage migration always succeeds. Live (non-storage) migration always succeeds.
I noticed in the error message that it searches for cluster resource name "SCVMM test-vm" and for some VMs I've got different cluster resource names.
Like for this VM cluster resource names are:
    Virtual Machine test-vm
    Virtual Machine Configuration test-vm
Furthermore, those resource names are showing up correctly in [VirtualManagerDB].[dbo].[tbl_WLC_VMInstance] table, columns VMResource and VMConfigResource.
Anyone knows why SCVMM keeps searching for "SCVMM test-vm" and how to fix this without recreating cluster resources?

Ok, you have the same problem and same configuration that this post:

  • SAP Data Storage Migration from HP EVA SAN to NetApp FAS3070 FMC for M5000s

    Good day all
We are needing to perform a storage migration for SAP Data that is currently on 2 HP EVA SANs. We have 2 SUN M5000s, 2 SUN E2900s and a couple of V490s, that all connect to the SAN via Cisco 9506 Directors. We have recently commissioned a NetApp Fabric Metrocluster on 2 FAS 3070s, and need to move our SAP Data from the EVAs to the new Metrocluster. Our SUN boxes are running Solaris 10. It was suggested that we use LVM to move the data, but I have no knowledge when it comes to Solaris.
I have some questions, which I hope someone can assist me in answering:
    - Can we perform a live transfer of this data with low risk, using LVM? (Non-disruptive migration of 11Tb)
    - Is LVM a wise choice for this task? We have Replicator X too, but have had challenges using it on another Metrocluster.
    - I would like to migrate our Sandbox, as a test migration (1.5Tb), and to judge the speed of the data migration. Then move all DEV and QA boxes across, before Production data. There are multiple zones on the hardware mentioned above. Is there no simple way of cloning data from the HP to the NetApp, and then re-synching before going live on the new system?
    - Would it be best to have LUNs created with the same volume on the new SAN as the HP EVA sizings, or is it equally simple to create "Best Practise" sized LUNs on the other side before copying data across? Hard to believe it would be equally simple, but we would like to size the LUNs properly.
Please assist, I can get further answers, if there are any questions in this regard.

  • Storage migration not possible after removing shared vhdx

I have two VM:s in VMM that I use for tests. Just completed a test of shared storage and removed the shared disks from WSFC in the cluster and then after shutting down the nodes I removed the disks from the VM:s using powershell. Now when I try to storage
migrate the VM:s (that no longer have any shared storage, HasSharedStorage = false) it says "The specified path is not a valid folder path on <host>". VMM 2012 R2 UR5. Other VM's migrate fine - just the two that had shared storage that
    doesn't

That's true in general and maybe that's the problem here. It's not like there is a load of information about how to manage VMs with shared disks. For removing the shared disks I shut down the VM:s and used Hyper-V manager to remove the disks. I then refreshed
the VM: in VMM and it picked up the change without complaining.
In complete lack of procedures of how to do this, and other important stuff as how you perform configuration changes in VMM on VM:s with shared disks I think all that can be said is that there are no procedures. If you google how to reconfigure such a VM
in VMM you'll find that ONE way is to perform a change in VMM, choose the Script button and then remove all the options except the supported ones from the script and the run it in the VMM console. This is what I usually do.
Maybe if I hadn't had this problem if I used Remove-SCVirtualHardDisk instead. I'm far from sure but it's a possibility
This is just a test setup so I'm not going to spend time on researching it. However it's a good example of how immature shared VHDx is and for anyone considering it I can only recommend them to seek other options if at all possible. We have several virtual
clusters using shared VHDx and it's not pretty. It violates most of the stuff that is great with virtualization and ties the fabric to the resources. Not beeing able to storage migrate a disk is just not practically acceptable.
This is a bug of some sorts - be it functionality or lacking documentation

  • Cluster Live Storage Migration completes without deleting the source virtual hard disk VHDX

Testing HV setup in a cluster of two nodes with shared FC storage.  Storage is CSV on both nodes.  Storage migration of a VM from C:\ClusterStorage\A to C:\ClusterStorage\B completes without any problem.  Upon completion, the source VHDX
are still left at C:\ClusterStorage\A.  The source files can be deleted manually.  All is done through VMM "Migrate Storage" option.  Why the storage migration does not delete the source files upon job completion?  Thanks!

I have noticed this happens when the folders are "pre-staged". If I create a folder and then storage migrate all of the files into it then it will not delete from it. If I just put the files in the root of the CSV then it seems to work. I am
looking into the permissions of the system and seeing what changes on a folder when it is created by a user and not the system. This only appears to happen when I am doing some cleanup because of duplicate machine name subfolders recently that a tech created.
If you match the permissions to a system created VM it should work though.

  • How to increase storage migration job timeout in SCVMM 2012 R2

    Hi,
I needed to move a VM 2+TB in size on slow storage to another volume. The VM was turned off. The VMM job failed after 9 hours and 23 seconds with following error:
    Error (2924)
Unable to complete the request. Operation on the hyperv1.company.local server timed out.
    Recommended Action
    Try the operation again.
VHD files were copied to destination successfully, but were not removed from source and also the VM was not imported from the destination location.
So it looks like there is 9 hour default timeout for storage migration jobs in VMM.
    How to increase this timeout?
    Thanks,
    Egils

    Brian,
If you got the same timeout error sooner then my assumption that this is 9 hour file copy timeout was wrong.
In my case the files were copied successfully, the VM was was removed from Failover Cluster and Hyper-V (unregistered in source location), but was not registered in destination location, so it might be that timeout occurred during registration of the VM in
    destination location.
Unfortunately the SCVMM error message does not include any details about the timeout.
Btw, there are some SCVMM timeouts that can be changed, like

  • Best Method for Hyper-V storage migrate

What would be the best and most efficient way to complete the following:
I have a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-v Hosting server, with a Windows Storage Server 2008 ISCSI connected storage drive. I need to move all the Hyper-V images from one ISCSI drive, to another ISCSI drive, as I just purchased another Windows Storage Server 2008
that I setup a ISCSI drive on that I want to store the Hyper-v images on.
Is the best method a export of each virtual server, then delete the current server, and them import them back from the new location?

Thought so, and totally without a doubt test before delete, lol.
My issue is when I started this I only had a few servers, but due to how easy it was to setup a new server and every software vendor we have wanting thier own server I am at 19 servers.
Major downside is they take forever to export.
I like the export method because it creates a identical structure for all the machine, as before I was storing all snapshots in one location, all vhd in another
Thanks for verifying what I figured was the only method.
Using the Microsoft Virtual Manager I can migrate, but that takes so long as well and I figured if I export, I can then use that as a full backup and then import it.

  • Oracle RAC Storage Migration - HP EVA to HP EVA

    Hi,
We are in the process of migrating from an old HP EVA4000 to a new HP EVA6400. We have migrated most of the systems that had storage presented from the EVA4000 with the exception of our Oracle RAC databases and wanted to check to see if anyone knew of any gotchas before we proceeded.
We are using CA to replicate the LUNs that are presented to the Oracle cluster. My plan is to shut down the database and all associated RAC services, disable CRS then halt the servers. I will then present the CA replicated LUNs to the servers and initiate a failover. I will then restart the servers and check that the LUNs have appeared from the 6400 before manually restarting CRS and the databases. I will then re-enable CRS before rebooting again to check that everything comes up automatically.
Does this sound correct? Has anyone done this before?
    Thanks in advance.
    Phil

Seems reasonable, but can't be certain unless you test. Make sure you backup OCR, VOTE, Database before you change the storage allocation.
How big is the database ? How long will your downtime be ?
It may be cleaner to just reinstall CRS and restore the database from backup ?
Are you using ASM ? If so then you could just add new devices to ASM, migrate the data, then remove the old devices.

    Hi,
There are 2 steps you need to do - move DPM server and move data.
For move DPM server, you need to backup DPM database and restore in new server. Please see steps in following article:

  • SAN Storage Migration with Hyper-V 2008 R2 CSV

    Dears
Our customer has configured 2 node Hyper-V Cluster with CSV   connected to an Old SAN Storage The Host Operating System is Windows 2008 R2.
We are planning to migrate the data from the old storage to the new storage. ( Both Storage boxes are connected via Fiber)
With regard to the Migration can we do  the below if so please provide some guidelines related to the Hyper-V queries.
(We are trying to avoid the Storage based migration)
    - Connect the new storage   to the servers
    - Create the LUN same as in the old storage and assign it to the servers
    - Create a new CSV  and point it to the new luns in the Failover Cluster Manager
    - Use the export/import function to move the VM's from the new storage to the old storage
    - Once all the vm's are moved create a new LUN for the quorum and re-configure the cluster to use the new quorum
Are the above steps will perform a error-free migration if so
    - Can we delete the old CSV and dismount the old storage at this stage.
Also these VM's (Exchange and SQL) has seperate LUN's assigned for the Exchange and SQL data , Does these data will be exported when we use the export/import feature of the Hyper-V to migrate the virtual machine
Your Valuable response in this regard is highly appreciated.
    Regards
    Muralee

    Dear All
    Thanks for your valuable reply.
And I was able to successfully migrate the cluster and below are the steps i performed
    * Initialized the SAN storage and assigned the LUN to both servers.
    * Logged in to the server which  is the current owner of the  csv's and disks
    * Initialized the disks as GPT and formatted the LUN without a drive letter.
    * Added to the Hyper-V Cluster as disks
    * Added to the CSV
    * Exported the VM to the new disks
    * Deleted the VM from Hyper-V console(Which will not delete any VM files)
    * Imported the VM (chosed the default settings in the wizard)
    * Added the VM as a service Failover Cluster Manager.
    * After completely moving the VM's  created a new LUN for the quorrum and changed the quorrum      configuration to the new disk.
    * Removed the Old Storage and restarted the cluster checked for the VM's functionality everything was fine.
NOTE1 :-  I faced a  difficulty in multipathing software as he was using the EMC Powerpath and I had to remove it and enable Widows MPIO  .
Anybody who are facing a similar scenario please send a note  I would be glad to share the experience.
NOTE2 :-  I tried all the SAN migration options from the storage Vendor but this method was able to do the migration in a much easier and confident manner.

  • Connecting 3560 with Dell 6248 for Storage Migration

I am looking at an old test and dev virtual infrastructure configuration that was set up with a 1GB Linksys Switch and a Dell 6248 Switch (attached pic is a representation).
The reason given for the Linksys in the config is it was the only 1GB switch available at the time when the SAN had to be installed and there were no more available ports on the 6248.Running Dell Dpack reports show latency issues when migrating from an EqualLogic Volume to a MD3200 volume and from the MD3200 to Md3200 volumes (on the order of 30-45 minutes for a 20GB VM). Migrating from EqualLogic volumes to EqualLogic volumes is in seconds.
I think the Linksys is the issue as does our Dell reps. We are looking at replacing the Linksys with a Cisco or another L2/L3.
I have a Cisco 3560 installed but am not familiar with configuration. I downloaded the Cisco Network Assistant (CNA) in order to configure the switch into the environment via a web browser. As noted in the infrastructure pic, the SAN traffic is isolated to VLAN 10 on the Dell Switch. In the second pic, I show the CNA and I am setting up a VLAN 10 on the Cisco switch and then want to connect the Md3200 to the Cisco which will be connected to VLAN 10 on the Dell Switch for access to an EqualLogic SAN
I am not sure I have the correct menu setting in the CNA for setting up VLAN 10 or if this is the best option?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I have several E6420, O3010 and since a week also some E7440 and E7240 on site.
I never had issues using the current Dell PE package for MDT.
At the moment my PE contains only the drivers from the Dell PE 3.0 package (WinPE3.0-Drivers-A13-D67JC)
and all my systems mentioned abobe have no issues connecting to the deployment share.
(btw: I have also some older E6400, E6410 and O390 I do no longer support, they
are supported by the pack Dell-WinPE-Drivers-A05.CAB according
to the Dell site, but I just started a deplymenst on a E6410 and is is also workign with just the latest PE pack)
    I'd
suggest you start over with your deplyoment share using at least MDT2012 Update 1.
Create a folder "PE" under "Out-of-Box Drivers" and extract latest Dell PE pack and import he drivers there
Create a selection profile e.g. "PE Drivers" and include just the "PE" folder created above
When configuring the Windows PE  settings of your deployment share select "PE
Drivers" selection profile for the driver injection in the "Drivers and Patches" to keep the PE image free of not needed drives.

  • DFS Storage migration options

    Hi all,
I am working with a customer who currently has an active/passive DFS physical cluster running on Windows 2008 R2. They do not use DFSR at this point as they are using their SAN to do block replication at the back end.
I have been asked to assist them in providing options to change their back end storage vendor with the least downtime possible.
The following are my thoughts and I appreciate any comments or better suggestions!
    Option 1
If I disable the passive nodes and enable DFSR on the cluster (then the data being replicated to the passive side is only known of by the SAN and not the cluster itself) I can then add a new node and attach the new storage to this node. Once replicated i
can then recreate the cluster pointing to just this node.
    Option 2
This option is to simply attach the new storage to the current cluster and use something like Quest Secure Copy to copy the data, structure, permissions and shares to the new drive. I can then reconfigure the shares to be active on the new drive. This could
have some downtime while shares are being reconfigured, and there is a high likelihood that there is more than 50TB of data to be moved here.
    Option 3
This option is very simply to do a full backup, take the current SAN storage offline then restore the backup to the newly attached storage drive. The downtime here is likely to be higher for this option.
So what is the best plan here, I'm thinking that the DFS method would be but is it as simple as enabling DFSR on a current cluster?
Many thanks for any opinions in advance!
    Martin

    Hi Martin,
Actually in using DFSR it will still take a long time for replicating 50TB data. Also you need to add/remove nodes from/to the cluster.
I think option 2 should be easier. Share permissions are actually stored in registry key so after copying all files from old LUN to new one, assign the old drive letter to the new LUN and shares still still working since nodes are still the same.

  • Hyper-V Storage Live Migration: Copy instead of move?

Have a 2012 R2 Hyper-V Cluster with a HP MSA 2000 Storage. No storage pools or storage spaces, just 4 LUN's with NTFS Volumes that are all converted to CSV's.
Have to perform VM migration from VM's that resides on a CSV with an underlying RAID 5 volume to another CSV with an underlying RAID 50 volume. Could perform the operation without any error from the failover cluster manager (move - virtual machine storge) on
    the VM.
The problem is that when I check C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1 (the old place of the VM) and C:\ClusterStorage\Volume2 (the new place of the VM), all VM files are still in both locations! Apparently, a "Copy" operation instead of a "move" operation
    was performed.
    - Why are the source files not have been deleted after the successful storage migration?
    - Is it safe to manually delete the VM files in C:\ClusterStorage\Volume1?
Thank you in advance for any help.
    Franz

    Hi FranzSchenk,
To perform a move, FOCM first copys the files over to the new location and then moves the mahine over to the new location with all memory and machine writes before then removing the old files. If the files haven't been removed (this does happen)
it could be permission's that stop the files being removed.
It would be worth checking the running VMs and checking where its pointing for the virtual drives and perhaps look at where its BIN file is for memory and where the XML machine configuration is located. If all are pointing to the new location
then it would be safe to delete the old files.
