Storage Needed for iPhoto photos.

I have used iPhotoBuddy to have separate libraries that can be switched between. I now have an iPad and want to be able to sync all the albums, so I have collected all the pictures that I want to keep active into a single library.
When I go to the Library and Select All, it indicates that I have 3.4 GB of photos. When I look in my pictures folder, this iPhoto Library seems to be 5.6 GB. I am trying to free up space on my harddrive. I recognize that there has to be some administrative space, but 2.2 GB seems like a lot. Is there some way to clean up this library and free up more space?

Have you read your first post?
The specific question was:
Is there some way to clean up this library and free up more space?
Try as I might I see no mention of
a suggested upgrade or a utility that I could purchase or a script that I could run that would save me time and energy.
Instead you got a specific answer:
All the data in the iPhoto Library Folder is required for the operation of the app.
So, frankly, you didn't ask what you seem to think you've asked, and no, I didn't only give you only information on how to move a Library. You make no mention of Sharing with a PC or archiving photos in your original post at all. Oh, and moving to a different disk will not affect the ability to share with a PC. And that advice was offered because you complained about disk space so I wondered
If disk space is an issue...
You may or may not find the later versions compelling, but if you don't consider the massive improvements in editing - including Non-Destructive Editing - to be a "serious functional upgrade" then I have no idea what might be.

  • Changing Storage Location for Optimized Photos?

Is it Possible to change the storage location for optimized photos...-- takes up a lot of space on my primary drive-- i'd like to put it on the secondary with the photos.

    When you say:
We have activated authorization check at storage location level using authorization object 'M_MSEG_LGO'.
Does it mean that you are just using the object - M_MSEG_LGO in the authorizations or does it mean you have activated the authorization check at SLoc level in config along with the usage of auth. object(please note, they are 2 different things).
The goods movement is part of the MM-IM component & this is used in MM, PP etc. So the object M_MSEG_LGO is checked whenever goods movement are posted, provided the config has been activated.
To be sure, check in table T001L whether the field XBLGO has a X for the SLoc where you require this control.

  • Help needed for iPhoto 8

I have inadvertently moved all my photo events (and their various labels) into one folder. This move erased all the event names so I have one massive unnamed folder/event. How can I undo this without having to go through all 10000 pictures and reorganize them? (I closed iPhoto before realizing what I had done, so I can't just "undo"). I did back up to Time Capsule this am and started to import them from there but I don't know that TC keeps them in event order and it seemed painfully slow. Ideas? thanks
    Dave Stroh

    Dave:
Do you have a recent backup of the entire library or of the library's database file, Library6.iPhoto, or the AlbumData.xml file? Having either is the only way I know of to get your events back without having to do it manually.
Otherwise, since Events are time based, you could create Smart albums based on years. Select all of the photos is one year smart album and create an event. Then do the same for each month in a year and make events for them. That way you'd at least have events based on months. That's the best I can think of.
See the tip at the end of my signature for a way to quickly and easily recover from a similar problem or other library damage issues in the future.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • How do I control storage location for iPhoto, iDVD and iMovie

My primary drive is getting full and I note that my User file has all of the iPhoto images, iDVD projects and iMovie projects.  I want to take these collections off the main drive and place them on one of my external hard drives to open up space on my primary drive (the one with the Applications, etc.) How do I control where my images and movies are filed when I use the above applications? I do not recall designating any save function to this folder or drive.  How can I save these files in a location on my external drives in tthe future? If I move these images and movies from my User file, will that cause a problem for iPhoto or iMovie or iDVD in finding the files in the future as I use these applications?

    Hi
They are using three different concepts - VERY UNLIKE APPLE to do like this !
    • iPhoto saves in a iPhoto library and there can be more than one - using the alt-key during up-start let's You to select which one You want to use and on Main Hard Disk at Root level in Photo folder.
    • iDVD - Save an iDVD Project file (sort of folder) where You want to find it.
    • iMovie - saves Event's and Project's in iMovie Event's resp Project's folders AND ONE MUST NOT alter or move anything in them or location of them - Moving Event's and Project's MUST BE DONE inside the iMovie Application !
So while one can move iMovie Event's and Project's to another Mac - the needed Photos (and audio from iTunes) will be missing and very hard to get iMovie on second Mac to find and recognice.
Yours (also confused - and moving step by step into the OLD FinalCut realm - Where everything makes SENSE !)

  • Advice needed for importing photos from Picasa

Hi, tomorrow I'm helping a friend migrate all his photos from his old Windows PC to his new iMac. I'm not very familiar with Picasa and was hoping someone here would know more about it than I do.
The photos are likely scattered all over his computer so it's not a simple matter of just grabbing a photo directory and moving it to the iMac. I read that Picasa lets you export photos but it also has a backup feature. Does anyone know what the best way would be to gather up all the photos and get them placed into a directory (or rather a series of nested directories) for importing?
Also, if they have entered any photo titles or descriptions in Picasa, will those just get lost? Same with albums, those will be lost too, right?
    Thanks!

Hi, I did some research and figured it out, and thought I'd post my results here in case it can help someone else someday.
There are two ways to get photos out of Picasa: Exporting and Backing Up.
If you export photos, they all show up flattened-out in one folder. While this would technically work, the downside is iPhoto will suddenly have thousands of photos added to it and I'm not really sure how it will figure out the events (I didn't try importing into iPhoto yet).
If you use Picasa's Backup feature (Tools->Back up pictures) then all the photos show up with their folder hierarchies preserved. So for example you could end up with a folder containing the following folders and photos.
    Vacation Photos
    Vacation Photos/Hawaii 2009/
    Vacation Photos/Hawaii 2009/pic1.jpg
    Vacation Photos/Hawaii 2009/pic2.jpg
    Vacation Photos/New York 2008/
    Vacation Photos/New York 2008/pic1.jpg
    Vacation Photos/New York 2008/pic2.jpg
    etc.
From what I've read, if the "Vacation Photos" folder is imported into iPhoto, the folder names will be used as events, so in this example you'll end up with a "Hawaii 2009" event and a "New York 2008" event, which is nice.
As far as Picasa's Backup tool goes, it will create one or more top-level folders with names starting with a dollar sign. These represent the top-level folders containing photos. On the computer I tested this on I ended up with $Desktop, $My Documents, and $My Pictures, because all the photos on this computer were inside of the Desktop, My Documents, and My Pictures folders (and their children).
So in a nutshell, if you want to migrate from Picasa on Windows to iPhoto, just use Picasa's "Back Up Pictures" menu item if you want to preserve the folder hierarchy of your photos. Oh, one last thing: this feature doesn't let you back up to the same hard drive as the photos, so just share a folder on either your Mac or your PC and then back up to that folder.
Hope somebody finds this information useful.

  • How can I reduce the storage needs for iMovie events (raw video)

Good news - After borrowing an 8mm analog camcorder (mine died years ago) and an older digital camcorder (mine doesn't support A/V in) I have been able to set up a "bridge" to convert our old 8mm home videos to digital and import them to iMovie.
Bad news - At 13GB per 8mm tape, plus the Mini DV tapes we also have, getting it all in the computer with room to grow is going to require at least 500GB of space, which I don't have. On hand are 120GB internal (MacBook), 120GB external (Time Machine) and 40GB portable.
After my experience with the 8mm analog camcorder (it died, couldn't buy them anymore, tapes useless) I want to get everything digital in a standard format with backup.
    1) Is there any way to reduce the storage space required for the raw video (Events) without impacting image quality (already mediocre in the tapes converted from analog)?
    2) What's the best way to squeeze an hour of video down to fit on a DVD but still leave the video available for re-import/editing in the future? I'd likely mail the DVDs to my parents house or something to keep them separate.
    Thanks!

    Hi
    You can also use
    Yousendit (google it)
where You can send 200Mb movies
    - You download Your movie to them
    - get an Internet address back ( url - I think it's called )
    - this You copy and send in Your e-mail to those that want's Your movie
    - and now they can get it from same address
If You pay You can send up to 2Gb (if I remember right)
BUT it will take time ! In most of my cases - burn it onto a DVD and send by snail-mail most often are a better solution.

  • Just what I wanted/needed for digital photos...

ever since digital photography became mainstream and i ditched the 35mm camera for a digital one, one of my main hangups has been how to share photos with others. in the old days (35mm), you just grabbed the folder of prints and showed them to whoever. however, with digital pitcures prior to the iphone, i either had to email them or i had to go to the store for prints. now i can cram pretty much all my pictures on the iphone and can show them off conveniently, since i take it everywhere. for me, this is fast becoming one of the coolest unexpected perks of the iphone!

Well, generally it's already pre-paid with your OS. But you can always check with

They can tell if you paid cash or if it was OS Redeemed.

  • What's the optimal home network storage solution for music & photos

My mac disk is full with music (.wav from my CDs) and photos/videos. That will only increase so I am looking for a storing/network solution, rtaher than having an external drive permanently connected.
About music: I want to store music in high quality (wav not mp3) and stream it to the hi-fi, but also being able to synch playlists on the iPhone/iPad.
About photos/videos: I want to be able to select which one to access from all devices (iPad; iPhone, MacBook, AppleTV..) and those not edited yet from the macbook.
Any sugestion on where to start?

How many photos are too many photos for iPhoto? When do I need to updgrade to Aperture?

Hi Terrence,  this is what happens, all too often when I click on something, sometimes it takes me 5 more clicks on the mouse while moving the cursor around to get rid of it. The one below popped up as I clicked on my junk mail.
The next one popped up when I was trying to get on to a site. This happens all the time. Don't know why it is happening. It happens on iPhoto, Aperture, everywhere I go, FaceBook...everywhere and at any time. So frustrating. I don't know if this is normal, but this was happening just before my last mac died a year ago.

Can synced photos on my iPad be sent back to my Mac? I lost pics in my iPhoto file needed for a presentation.

And of course I forgot about the built in way to send them back to the Mac .... Email them. You can email up to 5 photos at at time.
Launch the photos app, while looking at the photos in thumbnail view - tap the arrow icon in the upper right corner - tap on up to 5 photos at a time - Tap the Share button in the upper left corner - tap email from the resulting window.

  • Doesn't iPhoto negate the need to sync photos from my windows laptop?

    My confusion started here.... https://discussions.apple.com/message/20512109#20512109
Then I thought I had it solved!
So I created Journals and I could share them with anyone via the web - super!
BUT.... I have just deleted the photos from the photos app and my journals are empty?!?!?!?
I thought the photos uploaded to iCloud?
    Confused!!
What about the photos I have on my windows laptop? I dont want to have organise/store all my photos on my laptop and sync them each time I make an update.
Doesn't iPhoto get around this? Surely?
Or am I completely missing the point?
Any help with my confusion would be VERY much appreciated.
    Cheers.

So I created Journals and I could share them with anyone via the web - super!
BUT.... I have just deleted the photos from the photos app and my journals are empty?!?!?!?
I thought the photos uploaded to iCloud?
The journals are uploaded to iCloud, but synced and edited with the one device that created them. When you create them with your iPhone, you have to keep them in the camera roll of your iPhone.
I recommended the journals, because they are the only way to get photos into iCloud for more than a month. The photo stream entries will vanish after a month. The journals may live longer, and  they are synced to the version on your phone. The advantage of journals is, that you can browse them from the web on your other devices, so you do not need to import them on the other devices, like the PhotoStream.
What about the photos I have on my windows laptop? I dont want to have organise/store all my photos on my laptop and sync them each time I make an update.
Now I am confused. How many photos are we talking about? A lphoto library can grow very quickly. You will not be able to store all your photos on the iPhone in the long run.
The general idea with iPhoto in the iCloud is to have a selection of your best photos with you on your mobile device and to upload it to iCloud to share the best photos  with all your other devices. But your main photo library shoud be on your main computer with plenty of disk space, maybe on an external disk. iCloud only has 5GB of free storage anyway, and that is also needed for your other documents, mail, etc.
Are you running out of space on your laptop?

My iphone storage is full due to my large photo library. As I want to go on taking more photos, if I back up my phone to icloud, can I then delete all my photos from my iphone to make room for new photos? Or will the next time I back up lose all those previously backed up as it is a 'new' set of data?
I just want to find the easiest and safest way of not losing all my photos while being able to take more than my iPhones storage worth as it is already full - can someone help me please? I thought icloud was the solution to not uploading my photos to the mac but I'm not sure if the way it's going is working and don't want to delete photos or lose my phone and then find out what I'm doing isn't actually storing my photos permanently. Thanks

    Hey EmilyEliza,
As you are clearly aware, it is important for you to have backups of your important data, including all of these photos you are currently keeping on your iPhone. While it is possible to use iTunes or iCloud to do backups of your iPhone, the problem becomes how to access those backups if you have deleted the photos from your iPhone. Once you have done the backup and then removed the photos from the iPhone, the only way to access the photos is by restoring the backups to the phone. See this article for information about backups made from the iPhone -
Back up and restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iCloud or iTunes - Apple Support
If you want to easily access the photos once they are off of the iPhone, another approach to this would be to import your photos from the iPhone into an application on your Mac, such as iPhoto. To learn how to do this, use the steps in this article -
Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your Mac or Windows PC - Apple Support
Once those photos are on your computer, it is still important to back up those photos to somewhere else, so you can be sure of their safety before removing them from the iPhone. Your Mac’s Time Machine application is one method of doing this -
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Happy computing,
