Storage network slow backups
Hi all
I dont know if anyone can help on here, We are having issues backing up to some LTO 4 drives on our SAN, the san switches are old brocades running at 2 Gig, the devices are backed up via a HP G5 server running netvault, the servers sit on the LAN and are mainly teamed to 2 GIG using the HP software. We had a consultant come in last week and say the speed is ridiculously slow, someservers are backing up at no more than 10Meg per second data rate, he said he normally see's around 100meg when backing up using LTO 4 drives,
he used a utility called fstfill which created a 1 gig file then wrote to disk, he said the disk performance on the old servers was terrible, some at 8Meg a second, could this be the reason??
Can anyone shed any light on why they would go slow slow??
hope somone can help
Cheers
Carl
Are the servers backingup directly to the tape drives ? Or are they sending their data over the network to a backup server which is the driving the tape drives ?
If the data is going to a backup server is it backingup to a pool of disk and then on to tape or trying to feed the tape drives directly from the network feeds ?
- If your are running straight from a network stream, how many streams at a time is your backup software configured to send to each drive ? (ie. are you backingup 1 server at a time, or doing 5 at a time ?)
- How congested is your network between your servers and the backup server ?
Also you mention "old servers" ... how fragmented are the filesystems on those servers ? They could be spending a lot of time seeking the data.
Just some thoughts from the top of my head while I wait for someone to answer my question

Slow backup process:10mb for 50mins
Dears,
I have a early 2008 macbook pro 15" with snow leopard, and a 500G time-capsule(1st edition,firmware 7.4.1).
They worked fine in the past 3 years.
However I found my backup process became very slow about 2 months ago, I checked the log below and it shown that it took 50mins to backup just 10mb data.

I'd say, first, double-check the things you did that seem to have caused the problem.
If it all seems fine, try Verifying your internal HD and Repairing your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, to be sure it isn't some sort of directory problem.
If still no help, a few folks have had a somewhat similar problem (very slow backups with huge file counts) with 10.6.8; many managed to solve it by reinstalling OSX, but only going back to 10.6.7 via that "combo." Just why is a mystery, unfortunately.
You are right, I should double-check the problem.
I will try your suggestion, and thank for your reply -

I have the error message "Not enough storage. Cannot backup, not enough backup space in ICloud . . . ", but now the "close" and "settings" buttons don't respond and I cant get the IPad to open so I can go change settings. What do I do?
For a "hard" restart of your iPad just press the home and power button at the same time and hold it for at least 10-15 sec. until it restarts.

Unable to enter Manage Storage in Icloud backup and storage
I'm unable to enter Manage Storage in Icloud backup and storage. I'm clicking on Manage Storage and nothing happens. I am out of storage and I cant menage it. I have IOS 5.0.1
There is a unbelievably simple "solution" to this problem (not getting in to manage storage, only spinning wheel).
All you have to do is click "backup now" at the bottom and immediately as it is calculating estimated time for backup you click "manage storage" and VOILA! You´re in. Believe me it works, done it on 2 phones this evening. One 4s on iOS7 and one 5 on iOS6.1.3 -
Problem connecting two storage networks
Hello,
I connect two datacenters with 10GB modules. I'm using single mode fiber, it has 10Km between datacenters. Now I need connect the storage network in both datacenters using the same fiber. The storage networks use FCoE.
What solution can I use to connect the two storage networks. My budget is really limited.
Storage Network 1---------Network 1-------Fiber---------Network 2------Storage Network 2
Thanks for the help.Brigid,
There seems to be two aspects:
One is to get the end points to coincide. You may tick View>Snap Guides, then click one path by the end Anchor Point and drag it to snap (Smart Guides say anchor when you are there).
The other is to get rid of the gap in the stroke(s), You may join the paths into one, dragging across the coinciding Anchor Points with the Direct Selection Tool and Ctrl/Cmd+J, or you may keep the separate paths and change the Cap to Round in the Stroke palette/panel which will give you a rounded outer appearance); I presume the former is what you wish, in which case you may choose between Round and Miter Join. -
Network slowness in lion 10.7.2
I am having network slowness ever since upgrading to Lion 10.7.2. Nothing in my setup has changed. I used to get around 10 Mbps on my DSL router, now I get about 6 Mbps. I checked the router, the signal coming in to it is the same strength, 12 Mbps. Anyone have any ideas?
I use the word "Excessive" because when I boot from an external drive, where I have Snow Leapord installed, and open the same links, I don't have the list of ports and I never lose any with a "server not responding" error. The log in VirusBarrier doesn't show the time of the connections or how long they remain open. Not sure where I could get that information.
Not sure if a Netstat reading from the Network Utility helps with any info.
The clean install of the Mac OS 10.7.2 on a seperate partition yielded the same results.

ZFS backup -- Legato Networker / Solstice Backup - supported?
Does Legato Networker/Solstice Backup support backing up ZFS file systems?
Has anyone tried backing up mounted ZFS snapshots?
David Strom[email protected] wrote:
Specifically I am looking at being able to break the pool up in to various daily backups, but I noticed naming a filesystem doesn't back up the filesystems beneath it. (ie, /zpool/home doesn't mean /zpool/home/group2/bob gets backed up)
Is there a good strategy for backing up snapshots instead of the live filesystem?I think your only choices are to either use 'all' and let the client gather all the live filesystems, or name what you want to gather explicitly. There's not really any other choices. (This is a problem for some Networker admins even without having ZFS involved).
One option is to have a script maintain the save set list. At least then you don't have to do it by hand. You could make it smart enough to add in new filesystems, and you could easily have it reference snapshots instead of the live filesystem.

Storage Network Role - Is it implemented in 3.2?
The following link states that the Storage Networking Role is not functional and is for future use... this article is dated Nov. 2012. Can somone please confirm if this role is functional in Oracle VM Server 3.2?
The reason for asking is that I want to separate the storage traffic (iSCSI) from the network traffic.

Network slow after 10.4.5 update
Hi there, after installing the 10.4.5 update my PowerBook 12" is really slow when accessing network services. Web, Mail are impossibly slow.
I have a cable modem broadband connection with a Belkin wireless router sharing the connection. The laptop connects via Airport and uses DHCP for autoconfiguration.
I have tried the fix suggested on MacFixit of putting the DNS manually in the TCP/IP settings. Also I have turned off IPv6 which was also suggested to no avail.
My other laptops with earlier system revisions are running fine (I am using one to write this) and I have tried the Mac on another network with the same effect so it has to be something that 10.4.5 has done to my poor alubook
Can anyone help please.

Mac OS X 10.4.5 (#9): Another fix for network slowness -- re-applying the combo updater; SIIG FireWire card not working; more
Another fix for network slowness -- re-applying the combo updater Over the past few days we've outlined a number of fixes for network slowness that occurs after the update to Mac OS X 10.4.5, including entry of a DNS address, toggling of IPv6 and more.
We've now received notes indicating that a tried and true workaround for various issues -- re-applying the Mac OS X 10.4.5 combo updater (as noted in our general workarounds for 10.4.5) -- can have beneficial effects in this case as well.
MacFixIt reader Fred Moore writes:
"After much thrashing about and wasted time, I appear to have solved both the slow web page loading as well as my email sending problems in one stroke. Guess how: download the Mac OS X 10.4.5 combo updater and reapply it. This nonsense has cost me a lot of time but everything seems to work now. IPv6 is set back to Automatic, there is no entry in the Network prefs DNS server field, and my email sending works perfectly (so far; I've sent a bunch of tests). Why didn't I just download the combo updater and apply from my hard drive at the beginning? Well, Software Update should (yes, I know, I know...) work. I'll never again use Software Update for a system update." -
Forcing SMB traffic through Storage Network?
Hello,
I am trying out a Hyper-V cluster in my lab using SMB 3.0. My current infrastructure looks like this:
hvhost1
NIC 1 - Network IP: 192.168.10.181
NIC 2 - Storage IP: 192.168.100.181
hvhos2
NIC 1 - Network IP: 192.168.10.182

Contrained delegation is setup on both HV Hosts for cifs\FSHost1.
I am able to successfully run VMs on both HV hosts while path to FSHost1 is set to either,
\\fshost1\<share>\<vhd> or \\192.168.10.186\<share>\<vhd>. However, I am unable to force the SMB connection through my storage network using path, \\192.168.100.186\<share>\<vhd>. I receive the following error:

Is this possible, and how might I go about getting this to work?Hi there Jonathan,
Thanks for the response! I am no longer running into the 'general access errors' as I am working around some constrained delegation issues in the environment. That is, you can't add an 'ip address' as a delegate within AD. Due to this, I run into the 'general
access error' delegation issue when I try using the unc path, \\192.168.100.186\<path>. I have to use the NetBIOS/FQDN name of the host which will migrate the VM across my VMNetwork segment (192.168.10.0/24 subnet).
With that said, I am still running into the issue where, when I specify the VM path with \\192.168.100.186\<path> (my Storage segment on 192.168.100.0/24 subnet) the SMB connection continues to communicate on my VMNetwork segment (192.168.10.0/24 subnet).
I'm not quite certain how to force the SMB communication over my Storage segment.
Moving forward, I plan on purchasing additional NICs for my HV/FS servers, which should allow me to run multichannel SMB on my storage network. Once this is configured I am going to try and run the 'get-smbmultichannelconstraint' cmdlet to force SMB
over my teamed Storage network. This is the only thing I can think of trying. -
Does a mixed N and G network make the network slower for the N-enabled?
Hello all,
I was just admiring my Airport Extreme box after registering it, and I noticed this bit of fine print:
"Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network."
Does this mean that my 802.11g printer makes the network slower for my two 802.11n macbooks?Okay,
For a follow up: I'm using the "guest" network for all my G-level wireless devices, and the regular network from all my N devices.
Does that overcome the mixed network limitations? It seems like it wouldn't - because the Airport is basically creating two virtual networks out of one network. Or are there two individual networks on the Airport?
Thanks! -
Slow Backup. Brand New iPad... 8+ hours already!
I got a brand new iPad the other day, and when I first turned it on and activated it I downloaded a few apps. The main app I've been using is MangaDL to read manga on the go (comics). Last night, before sleeping I tried my first sync/backup and now when I wakeup it's still not done!!! This is absolutely not right. I barely even have 2GB worth of things inside the iPad!
Now I've read other forum posts about slow backup speeds... but as soon as it gets technical it seems everyone is talking about Windows. Just as a note, I'm using Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.4. I just upgraded from Tiger 2 days ago.HI,
No way it should take that long.
Since you just upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard, check the startup disk for errors that may need repairing. You need your Mac install disc for this. Your profile indicates you have two Macs. Make sure and use the machine specific disc that came with the Mac you tried the backup with.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first from the installer menu)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space

I want to reinstall an app fresh install from iTunes not from my iCloud, I go to manage storage I stop backup and delete app by turning green button off, but when I ask to download it again from iTunes it is only downloading it from my iCloud.
Please assist
ThxYou don't really delete app that way, that way to stop backup for that app in icloud.
You need to delete it from your home screen and then while it still will look like download from icloud - app will start fresh.
However if app uses any account sign in the stuff that is attached to sign in will come back, so if you do not want to you need to use
fresh account as well. -
