Storage options and performance

We have a GroupWise 8.02 HP2 running on a NetWare 6.5 SP8.
The hardware has a RAID 1 for its SYS: volume and a RAID 5 (4 disks)
for its MAIL: volume.
We've been running low on space....
As an immediate solution, we're considering plugging into, via iSCSI,
a SAN that has additional space.
- If we go this route, would it be better to move our entire MAIL: volume
to the SAN (rather than extend the volume over an iSCSI connection) or
would performance/reliability not matter?
- Are there any documents (I haven't found any, as yet) describing moving
such a volume to another piece of hardware? [I suspect a few
configuration
files would need to be pointed to another location, but don't know if
there
are hidden pointers that might be missed.]
Also under consideration (possibly a long term solution) would be to move
to a new server with more capacity. [I'm considering a RAID 10.]
- If we go to a RAID 10, would this eliminate the need for a RAID 1 for
our SYS: volume? (Would it still be considered 'best practice' to have
the SYS: on its own RAID--or could the different volumes be spread
across the RAID 10 and be considered safe?
Many thanks,
-Steve

remain the same.
So ... you'd still recommend having separate RAIDs
for SYS, MAIL, Archive, and Restore? If so, it
doesn't seem doable (at least on our budget) to run
a RAID 10 for our MAIL volume. The drop in storage
I/O speed (from having less spindles available)
wouldn't gain us much. [I was looking to have 16
drives with the RAID 10.]
If it's only GroupWise you would be running on SLES or preferably OES2, I'd think that would be doable. Once running, many sysadmins I work with don't have to know/use more than ' service grpwise status/stop/start' and the http status pages of the agents. GroupWise runs independent enough and as I've experienced very stable. I can't look into how much resources you/your company has to invest the time needed to get a grips with it.
Looking a bit further, it would be something you'd need to do in any case if wanting to continue using Novell products. The new GroupWise version due somewhere this year won't run NetWare for example.
The most important factor imo is speed and stability.
As for different Raid's for SYS/system disk and GW DIB data... no, I was only talking about keeping OS and GroupWise data on separate disks/LUNS. How you can implement this strongly depends on what storage system you are looking to but.
Raid10 is fast but not needed by definition, We use Raid50 in many setups - it performs well and has the added advantage of having more effective storage available with the same amount of disks. The choice on Raid set configuration is however very dependent on environment, load, vendor and type of the storage, overall load, etc... I don't think that's something one could really advise on without knowing more details.

  • RAC Storage Options ( Openfiler or Wasabi )

    Hi RAC gurus..
I need your advice regarding storage options for our RAC development environment.
Since it is a development environment so management is reluctant to invest in SAN , Our production is a 2 node RAC on windows 2003 server mounted on Dell SAN.
We have two spare servers available with Intel Xeon processors and SAS disks on them. SAN is out of question here and since we are on windows we cannot use NAS.
I was reviewing the storage options and came across to Openfiler and Wasabi Storage Builder softwares which can transform your server ( spare ones ) into virtual SANs for shared storage purposes.
I want to know if its reliable, scalable and whether it can be put to production one day or not? Which one is better Openfiler or Wasabi ?

whether it can be put to production one day or not?
you need to ask this to oracle support to get a correct answer ; moreover for a production system, I will only use certified hardware .

  • Is the iCloud an external storage option?

    Hi,
The storage area has 5.93GB available and I am unable to update the operating system as there is not enough space available. I have emptied the Trash.
I need to look at external storage options and am wondering if purchasing 200 GB in the iCloud and move audio, movies and photos from the MacBook Air to iCloud is a practical option instead of an external hard drive or mini drive. Audio, movies and photos take up 75GB storage.
    Thank you.

As the questions says, does disabling the telemetry options in the browser settings disable any information, usage, and performance sharing as it does in Firefox proper, in spite of the blurb in the Aurora "about" window?

hello Alxlight, the text in the about-dialog is static and should just inform users about the default configuration in the experimental aurora/nightly channels of firefox. when you decide to disable the various settings in ''options > advanced > data choices'' this data won't be submitted to mozilla, despite what the about-dialog says...

  • ASM, rebalancing, 3rd party storage and performance

Hi all, I have some questions for the storage experts and I need your opinion about:
    1. Which type of ASM is better for the rebalancing perspective (and obviously the performance perspective), but considering the availability as well: Unprotected, 2-way (normal) or 3-way (high)? I know 3-way is the worst because we have to multiply by 3 the space of the database, but has great availability. Which of these do you use in your company?
    2. If someone is using EMC/Fujitsu/Hitachi, do you use Unprotected or 2-way (normal) in ASM?
    3. Which type of rebalancing (from zero to 11) is the best to use, considering the overall performance , I mean, when you have to add a new disk, ASm will perform the rebalancing.
    4. Which is better to use: ASM Cluster File System or Oracle Cluster File System ?
    Thanks.

I know 3-way is the worst because we have to multiply by 3 the space of the database, but has great availability. Which of these do you use in your company?Wrong question IMO. You do not choose normal or high redundancy based on which rebalances the fastest. You make that choice wrt to redundancy and high availability.
The best in this respect is high redundancy. 3 storage servers. Fully redundant I/O fabric layer (3+ I/O paths from each server to each and every LUN). Which means you can loose 2 storage arrays and most of your I/O fabric layer (switches and cables). And the storage layer left will still be able to be effectively used for ASM and the RAC database will not even notice that this destruction happened.
However, this best is not always feasible ito existing architecture, budget and so on. So that drives the requirements and needs and what the best is to meet that.
    2. If someone is using EMC/Fujitsu/Hitachi, do you use Unprotected or 2-way (normal) in ASM?That again depends on redundancy levels. If the SAN provides a RAID5 or RAID10 LUN, should you mirror it?
This may makes sense if you have 2 SANS. And with each SAN implementing RAID5, you mirror (via ASM) across SANs.
It makes less sense if you use ASM to mirror (on the same SAN) 2 RAID5 LUNs.
You also may have no choice. For example, migrating a high redundancy diskgroup from a storage server (no redundancy by server), to a SAN (RAID5/10 redundancy by SAN). When migrating ASM diskgroups, you cannot reduce redundancy. You cannot make a high redundancy diskgroup a normal redundancy diskgroup. Or a normal one, an externally redundant diskgroup.
In such a case you normal/high redundancy diskgroup on the new SAN (with its RAID5/10 LUNs), still need its own mirrors in ASM.
    3. Which type of rebalancing (from zero to 11) is the best to use, considering the overall performance , I mean, when you have to add a new disk, ASm will perform the rebalancing. How busy is the I/O layer? What production processing is running? How will this be impacted by using power 11? How soon does the old (dropped) disks need to be physically decommissioned? Etc.
There is no single correct answer to what load balancing power setting to use.
    4. Which is better to use: ASM Cluster File System or Oracle Cluster File System ?For what purpose?
For RAC database purposes only? ACFS. As OCFS adds another set of kernel drivers, kernel services, and another Interconnect (ocfs needs its own IP Interconnect that is typically run over the public IP network of the cluster, and that can be/should be run over the private IP network of the cluster).
Why add more moving parts (ocfs) when ACFS is available?
Then again - why use ACFS when you are not running Grid Infrastructure? Or why makes your cluster file system dependent on Grid/CRS to be running (with ASM), when OCFS's moving parts are significantly fewer and less complex?
As with most things in Information Technology - there is no overall "best". The "best" depends on a number of factors, and the business requirements that need to be met.

How recently did you switch?  If it's less than 60 days, then Verizon simply reinstates your previous account.  The fact that you were on the EDGE plan and mailed the devices back, and they apparently are somewhere in the system, could cause complications, and it might just work out that you just go back on the same plan and they set you up with the same devices.  I'm not sure how it will go - but since you are still being billed for the devices...

  • GT70 2PC – Software testing and performance report.

It is so excited here again. Currently, my first/only object after work is playing Titanfall.
I intended to share another performance testing today. But I didn’t. I found there are too many great open box posts on different forums. Therefore, I decide to dig the MSI software compatibility and do a touring. What can I say? I’m Mr.Curiosity who really desires to know every built-in application in system. That is why I share this article with you, my friends. I would like to discuss with everybody who is interested in MSI software. Of course, I have some performance reports for you, too. Please also remind me if you find any typo/wrong in this post. Thanks in advance.
    1. MSI Boot Configure
This is the first software which pops up immediately. It is thoughtful design because we can choose enter the [Windows 8.1 metro] or [desktop] by ourselves now. I give it two thumbs up!!!
Select your favorite boot configuration and press [OK]. If we want it work immdiately, we can logout the system and re-login again.
    2.   MSI Remind Manager
Honestly, I didn’t know what it is in the beginning. The cute robot shows every time when I login the system. I found this is a reminder for product registration. Good, I would like to have best MSI support and warranty for my lovely GT70 2PC. But don’t worry, if you don’t want to get this message again, you just need to select the right option and close it.
    3.   Synaptics TouchPad
This is a driver for mouse. [Mouse property] will show if we do the double clicks on TouchPad icon in tray. You can choose enable/disable internal pointing device when external pointing device is attached. This is brilliant. A tough guy (like me…HA! HA!) didn’t like to play game with touchpad. Because the character in game will be weak and slow if I control it by touchpad. Of course, I need the external mouse all the time and don’t want the interference from touchpad.
    4.   System Control Manager (SCM)
We can enable/disable the WLAN/BT/camera devices by SCM. Besides, it can control the display brightness, volume, screen on/off and ECO. ECO is special mode for gaming watching movie.
    5.   Sound Blaster CINEMA
Sound Blaster CINEMA is come from an old school audio company – CREATIVE. The software can adjust the surround sound easily. We also can adjust 5.1/7.1 surround sound for the internal speakers and external headphone. That is great, isn’t it?
Besides, we can also adjust CRYSTALIZER/BASS/SMART VOLUME/digital output by ourselves.
    6.   Killer Network Manager
This is a major feature of MSI NB.
In Killer Network Manager, we can set the network priority for each of applications and we also can abandon the connection from malicious software.
[Performance] shows current status of network. We can find out which application occupied the most greedy resources by it.
[Network -> Test Network Speed] will detect the network environment automatically. Furthermore, it will adjust the priority for applications.
[Killer Ethernet] show the LAN connection info.
[Killer Wireless] show the router info.
    7.   SteelSeries Engine
This is another major feature of MSI NB
If we do the right click on icon in tray, the menu will show following list. We can select [Launch SteelSeries Firmware Update Tool], [Updates]…and so on.
If we select the [Settings]. It can help us change default language and set application auto running when system power on.
    I.   Buttons
Double click to open the SteelSeries Engine. I think it can set 4 different keyboard settings for each of profiles. And it can switch by FN+1~4.
[Keypress Marc] can record what you input. And [Record Delays ] can modify the delay time. HA! No game can block us anymore. Please remember to press the [SAVE] for your setting
[Launch Application] can launch any application immediately. I suggest to set the cold key for this function.
Here is example. I use [PgUp] to quick start the 3D Mark11. See, it will pop up when I pressed [PgUp].
It is simple to use [TextMarco] set our own phrase. Now I become a quick speaker in my team. One key, only one key can help me to type a lot of words.
Are you tired to press some keys that you never want to touch in game (Like WIN KEY)? It is not the problem now.  [Disable Key] will do the favor and disable any key which you hate.
II.   [Colors] can change the color of backlight keyboard. Also, you can set different modes (Gaming/Audio…etc) on it.
We can change the color zone. There is not only 4 or 5 colors. The engine provides thousands of colors for us. [Audio mode] is the coolest. It will change colors by itself when we play music by speakers. I like to dance with my keyboard.
III.   We can select different languages by [Settings].
IV.   [Properties] can save our hard works of settings reliably.
    V.   If you want to defeat your competitors, it is important to know your enemy. However, It is more important to know yourself. [Statistics] can help us observe which keys are most popular by our fingers.
Right click on [Profile]. It can modify/export/import/delete the profiles.
Mouse can use the same kind of settings as keyboard.
    DPI setting for mouse.
    Save files.
We can record the mouse, too.

Norton Internet Security: Anti-Virus software, MSI provides 60 days for free.
Norton Online Backup: Online data backup software, MSI provides 30 days for free.
Norton Anti-Theft: Anti-Theft software, MSI provides 30 days for free.
If you like Norton’s products, you can buy it online.
If you don’t, I believe we can uninstall it directly.
    So, the decision is ours.

    I.   System Monitor:
It can monitor CPU/GPU loading and temperature. We also can find the network speed and fan speed in it.
    II.   Utility:
You can set your favorite apps in [Add new Utility].
E.g. I added a [MSI Afterburner]. Click [Open] to build the link. Do you feel familiar with something? Exactly, [Launch Application] of [SteelSeries Engine] can do this, too.
    III.   Instant Play:
We can define [Fn+F4] to enable the quick start. But there is more secret.
We can also use [Browse] to assign the game which we want.
Click the icon of game and [Fn+F4] will be ready. We can only use 1 program at once.
I usually change the brightness, volume and mouse sensitive before the game. As you know, every games are different. It is sweet because we can use  [Apply Setting] to do this.
I can’t believe it. We also can find the clock feature in it. How convenient it is!
IV.   Hybrid Power is another MSI feature.
It can provide the power by AC adapter and battery in the same time. We can monitor the status in here.
    10. BurnRecovery
It can create the recovery CD/DVD/USB for MSI NB.
    Here can select Recovery disc/USB/ISO.
I will make a ISO file first.
We can select where to put the ISO.
    Creating the recovery file...
    Finish!
Open the folder and we can find 4 ISO files in it.
Well…[BurnRecovery Help] provide the details spec.
In my opinion, everyone should create their own recovery image. You will need it in one day.
    11. Battery Calibration
This is software for battery calibration. In order to keep our battery good, we should do the calibration every three months. Don’t forget to plug-in the AC adapter and battery during the process..
Press [Start] to begin the process. It will make the battery fully charged first.
Then, it will empty the battery like this.
System will shut down after the empty process. At last, fully charged again. It will take 4~5 hrs to complete the process.
    12. MSI Dragoon Army /MSI Facebook /Web site /YouTube

[MSI Dragoon Army] is the official forum for MSI. We can find NB, MB and AIO info in it.
Facebook Quick Link for many countries of world.
    MSI official website
    YouTube channel of MSI.
    13. Super-Charger
There is no message when I click this app at the first time. But when I attached my IPAD, it pops up the [Super-Charger]. It is amazing because IPAD can’t be charge by this USB port. As far as I know, the USB 3.0 only provides maximum 900mA for its device. IPAD will need 2.1A for charge process. I have no idea how MSI NB make IPAD charging okay.
    14. XSplit GameCaster
This is one of important features. I saw many different first class gaming machines this year. All of them have the broadcast software. (Like PS4, Xbos ONE)
It can switch the default language after we login.
Twitch/YouTube / Facebook/ Twitter/Google+ can be used by [Accounts]. It is easy to start the live show.
We can modify the resolution and use twitch by [Setting]
We can configure FPS/CPU loading/where to show on display by [Status label].
    Hotkey configuration.
    Videos storage.
Press [Ctrl+Tab] to call Gamecaster in game. And we can twitch or modify setting. I will provide my gaming video for you later.
    15. Power DVD
This is a famous video player. Also, it can support BD format.
We can use the [Setting] to change our language.
We can change 5 times for default country .
It is glad that I’ve finished the introduction of GT70 software.

  • What's the FASTEST file storage option ?

    Hi all,
Im building an application in Java where indexing and storing of data is a major area of the app. It should be able to store the data as well as retrieve them rapidly as well as the files should be small in size.
Knowing Java's popularity with XML, I've chosen that as one candidate, but the problem is Im not too sure how the above 2 criteria will match with XML.
    1) Is XML fast enuf considering retrieval of data ?
    2) And how about the[b] storage sizes ?
Or should I scrap XML and build my own version file structure such as a B-tree ?
How difficult would that be considering limited development time ?
    thanx in advance ....

Anyway to deal with this post piece by piece.
I agree with you that database infact rules out other
options when it comes to speed and storage. Im not in
anyway trying to abuse XML as a storage mechanism. If
I had the freedom to use a database, I know I wudnt
even hav posted this question, cos database wins
hands down in ease of programmin, maintain, store and
    rapid response.
Okay first of all my post was not a personal attack against you. There are plenty of people who abuse or ty to abuse XML as a storage mechanism with extremely unhappy results. I want to make that point clear not just to you but to any future readers of this thread so that if they are considering such a course of action they should come back to reality.
It wud be insane to ask the client to
to install a DBMS jus to make sure the P2P app wud
run. As for the details about the solution, it is a
P2P app, but not to share content as such traditional
ones. Its supposed to help ppl arrive at better
seacrh results on a Web Search Engine.Well this was dealt with previously. In short using JDBC does NOT imply a full blown database server. It could be a standalone database like Access or you could write your own driver that accesses a proprietary file directly or you could use a plain text driver.
The point is that if you use JDBC you decouple your application from the storage. This is the important point. Because it means you can switch the storage mechanism as best fits you later without having to rewrite gobs of code.
    >
As for the requiremtns, I need a storage mechanism
sm to store the rankings a user might have given
indivuidually per page or website. I need to store
them as well as access them anytime I want and share
them with the peers. Not only rankings I need to
store other deatils like the search string, the
datetime of the query etc.All the more reason to look at a database of some sort... an embedded database would be fine.
    >
I will let you know more of the requiremtns as soon
on as I advance onto it. Right now Im not
concentratin on the storage part of it. ( Jus
thinking of goin ahead with XML ) and rather
implementing the P2P communication area. I was jus
doing some research on what would be the best storage
option for dealing with the app's "data". I read
on a book that B-Tress and such data structures can
actually be implemented on file storage thus giving
better performance. And also I was looking for
material ( white papers and such ) discussing the
various issues of each storage option available
currently which will stand as proof for the final
    solution I am gonna take.
Okay here is the problem with all this. How do you think databases implement indexes?
Hint: while it is all in the end vednor specific the answer is some sort of tree structure.
So again back to the point if you want to write your own tree structure go right ahead... I think it's pointless but go right ahead. What you should do though is write it so that your application accesses this structure through JDBC so that later when you decide that re-inventing the wheel was not such a hot idea you can change the storage implementation without destroying your application.

  • Best storage option

    hello
is GPFS on AIX considered the best storage option for oracle RAC ?
    thanks

    1) ASM is Oracle best practice for storage of both single instance and RAC 10g Oracle databases
    2) Once you use it and know it, there is no come back from ASM, is by far the best performing, easy to manage and flexible storage option.
    3) Dont be afraid of raw devices + ASM, you will configure your raw devices once and then all the work you have to do is from time to time just add new disks according to your requirements, ASM + Oracle Managed Files will do all the dirty job: Extend datafiles, balance and spread IO.

"Serial ATA" refers to the type of connector interface between the drive and the machine, doesn't matter if it's a SSD or a hard drive.
Otherwise known as SATA, there are progressive improvements to it's speed. SATA 1, 2 and currently new machines 3 at 6gb/s.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA
Solid State Drive means a drive with no moving parts, unlike hard drives which have moving parts.
Solid State Drives are shock resistant, unlike hard drives which are not, and perform faster than hard drives, however they are very expensive in large sizes, cant' be securely erased and have limited write capability.
Most users should have at least 500GB of storage on their boot drives, 750GB-1TB if they are video media consumers.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid_State_Drive
Flash Storage is a type of Solid State Drive
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_memory
750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm AND 750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
750GB refers to the amount of data the hard drive can hold, the 5,400 RPM is the rotation speed of the magnetic platters
The 750GB 7,200 RPM drive will perform better than the 5,400 RPM drive, however it might slightly lower the battery life of a portable machine, if your laptop will be used on power cord most of the time, then it's a non-issue really.
Hard drives can be securely erased, don't wear out like SSD's do and are a lot more economical in larger sizes, however the machine can't be moved while it's in operation or the heads will strike the platters and ruin data.
The best all around option for most laptop users is the 7,200 RPM 750GB drive as it will give better read performance and large storage with the ability to scrub the drive of unwanted data.
How do I securely delete data from the machine?

How can i solve this probalam....??
Moderator's notes: Moved to it's own thread

    Dear Kr_gabani,
    Welcome to the Nokia forums!
Could you please try perform a soft reset using the code *#7780# security code 12345 if prompted, this will not delete any data however it will restore your settings to how they where when brand new.
Please try and replug the device and if it still does not work please go into your computers control panel > devices > uninstall the phone drivers.
After you have uninstalled the phone drivers please replug your phone and let the drivers reinstall themselves.

  • Important!! Improve the life and performance of the battery.

Reduce the operating temperature and increase battery life
The battery in your notebook PC is designed to provide the necessary amount of energy for the processor while maintaining HP high safety standards. As a result, the battery may not charge or may stop providing power to the notebook when the battery temperature exceeds the specified, design safety level.
If the battery life appears shorter than normal, the battery stops charging before it is 99%-100% full and the battery appears warmer than usual, the battery has most likely reached its designed "no charge" safety state. The battery will no longer charge until the temperature condition is corrected.
Try one of the following methods to correct the battery temperature:
When charging the battery, do not use applications that require large amounts of system resources such as graphic or memory intensive applications, heavy and extended hard drive usage.
Turn off your notebook and remove the battery to allow it to return to a safe operating temperature.
Make sure the notebook PC is operating on a hard surface. Using the Notebook PC on a bed or sofa may block the vents causing the notebook PC to heat up and shut down.
By taking these steps, the battery will return to its normal operating temperature range and continue to charge and discharge as designed.
Calibrating the battery while PC not in use
Recalibrating the battery requires a cycle of a complete charge and a complete discharge. To recalibrate the battery while using the PC is not is use complete the following steps.
The recalibration may take 1-5 hours depending on the age of the battery and the configuration of the notebook PC you own. The PC should not be used while you perform the following steps. Completing all the following steps will also calibrate the battery so that the power meter readings are accurate.
    Shut down the notebook PC
Connect the AC Adapter to the notebook PC and to an electrical socket.
Charge the Notebook PC until the Battery Charge light is Green. This indicates the battery is completely charged.
Press and release the Power Button to start the computer.
Press the F8 key several times when the HP Logo displays.
When the Windows Advanced Startup Menu displays, select the Startup in Safe Mode option.
Remove the AC power adapter from the notebook PC.
Allow the battery to discharge completely until the notebook PC turns off.
The battery is now calibrated and the battery level reading on the power meter is now accurate.
If you are not using the notebook regularly then please unplug the AC adapter and shut down the notebook. By following these practices will improve the life and performance of the battery. Here is a quick list of Do's and Don'ts for the care of your Li-On batteries:
    Do's
When you receive a new Notebook or Tablet PC, leave the battery to fully charge overnight.
Condition a new battery by using it until it is fully discharged, and then re-charge it fully. Doing this once a month will help to accurately calibrate your battery.
Always ensure the battery is recharged as soon as possible after it becomes fully discharged. A battery will be permanently damaged if left for an extended length of time in a fully discharged state.
Remember that a Lithium-Ion battery will slowly deteriorate; a new battery will always perform better than one that is 6-months old.
Remember that the battery half-life is rated for a certain total number of charge/discharge cycles (see your User Manual or Quick Start Guide for the rating). For example, a battery that is rated for 3 hours and 500 charge/discharge cycles, will still be considered as within specification, even if it only lasts for 1 hour 45 minutes after 500 charge/discharge cycles.
Heat is the worst enemy of a battery. Allow plenty of air to circulate around the Notebook/Tablet PC, so that the battery is kept as cool as possible when charging and also when in use. If provided, use the integrated 'legs' under the Notebook to raise the notebook and improve air circulation.
Remove the battery if storing for several months (the battery should be at approximately 50% charge or higher).
If you use a NoteBus or if charging your Notebooks or Tablet PCs in a confined space, allow for adequate ventilation in order to keep the batteries as cool as possible.
    Don'ts
Do Not - Expose the battery to excessive heat or cold (i.e. outside the range of 10-35 degrees Centigrade ambient).
Do Not - Store the battery in a fully charged state (store batteries with about 50% charge).
Do Not - Allow a nearly flat battery to be unused for more than a month or so. The battery will slowly discharge until it becomes fully discharged and this will permanently damage the battery cells.
Do Not - Charge your Notebook/Tablet PC inside a carry case - the battery may overheat.
Do Not - Charge your Notebook/Tablet PC when stacked on top of each other - the battery may overheat.
Remember: Your battery is slowly degrading all the time, even if it is not used. Keeping your battery as cool as possible will slow down this degradation considerably.

    Hi chiekoo,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:
iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694#error21
    Error 20, 21, 23, 26, 28, 29, 34, 36, 37, 40
These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. FollowTroubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • Question about a file system storage option for RAC on 10g

    Hello everyone,
I am in the beginning of connecting our storage and switches, and building RAC on them but there is a little argument between our specialists.
We have two database servers(10g with OEL 5) to be clustered and two visible disk groups to each of those nodes. So question is can we choose only one disk group as a shared storage leaving the rest one as the redundant copy during database a creation window while installing the database.  Because some of us argue that oracle database has a built-in capability to decide on what level of RAID we store our data.
    Thank you for your help.

"some of us argue that oracle database has a built-in capability to decide on what level of RAID we store our data".
That statement is not true.  Oracle has optional multiplexing for control files, redo logs, and archive logs but this is not enabled by default and Oracle will not automatically enable it.  If you want redundancy of tables, indexes, temp, and undo you must provide this because Oracle does not offer it standard or as an option.  You can achieve redundancy with RAID at the array level, or host based mirroring (like ASM redundancy groups or Linux mdadm).  This can also depend on your file system because, I think, OCFS2 does not support host based mirroring (so you cannot use mdadm or lvm to mirror the storage if you are using OCFS2).
Redundancy is not required, but it is recommended if you are using hard disks because they are prone to failures.  You can configure RAID 10 across all disks in the array and present this as one big LUN to the database server.  If you have two storage arrays and you want to mirror the data across the two arrays, then present all of the devices as JBOD and use Linux mdadm to create your RAID group.
RAC requires shared storage.  Maybe you have a NAS or SAN device, and you will present LUNs to the Oracle database servers.  That is no problem.  The problem is making those LUNs usable by Oracle RAC.  When I used Oracle 10g RAC, I used the Linux raw device facility to manage these LUNs and make them ready for Oracle RAC.  However, raw has been desupported.  Today I would use either ASM or OCFS2.  This has nothing to do with redundancy, this is just because you are using RAC.
