Storage solution help - iTunes, Airport, NAS, remote access

Hi,
I am looking to purchase a new Storage Device. I have a small network at home consisting of, in addition to my computer, my girlfriend's computer and a couple of friends who regularly come over. I have a cable modem, Vonage (which I am about to get rid of - never use it), and an Airport Express. My access to the network is strictly through the AE, hard wired is not an option in my house due to setup.
I have a MacBook with a 160GB Western Digital USB drive directly attached. The WD houses my iTunes, but it's full. I stream music to my home stereo from iTunes through the AE. I also have about 30GB of photos on my Macbook's HD. I have no backup strategy in place so if the WD dies, I'm screwed. Here is what I want in a solution:
1) Redundancy - preferably RAID 1 or 5
2) Fast enough to steam HD content wirelessly (I will probably be adding an Apple TV this summer)
3) Ability to move around my house and still stream music. Currently I have to be plugged into the WD (which has an AC Adapter) so I am relegated to the desk.
4) Remote Access of files. I am sick of lugging around the external hard drive. Wondering if this would be fast enought to listen to music while outside of my internal network?
5) **Probably not possible** Ability to play music directly from the Storage Device, potentially with AppleTV or some other device, so that I don't have to have my MacBook powered on.
I am leaning towards a NAS but I have been reading some info about using Airport Extreme USB hard drive sharing function. I also thought that AppleTV might release an update that allows users to access and play their digital content without going through the PC.
I looked at the following devices:
1) Maxtor Shared Storage II 1TB - uPnP AV adapter looks like it will play files diretly from this withou PC - wondering if the Airport Extreme is a uPnP AV device?
2) Iomega 150d
3) Buffalo Terastation Live (looks like it has limited Mac support)
I'm looking for recommendations on a solution, NAS, USB or otherwise that addressed the above concerns. I don't want to spend over $1,000.
Thanks
Conor

If your ISP is refreshing the dynamic host configuration of the public ip address assigned to the ISP provided router you will need to request a static ip address from your service provider.
The addresses that are used "inside of your network" are private ip addresses. If you are using the (1) public address for your router (APE)(Apple airport extreme) from the ISP what you are trying to do will not work very well since your router (APE) will use the Public IP address to provide access to the public internet for your private network using the private ip addresses you have used to create your subnet and told your router (APE) about. Three private IP address schemes can be used for a private internet. One for each class. Class A 10.x.x.x/8, Class B 172.16.0.0/12 and Class C 192.168.0.0/24. Translated using dynamic NAT (network address translation with overload) making your LAN hosts using private IP addresses to seem as if they are using a public ip address allowing access to the public internet where only public ip addresses can be used.
PAT (port address translation) is what you are trying to accomplish. For PAT you must have a valid public ip address from your ISP and a private address from your network assigned to interesting host. Use the private ip assigned to the interesting host in the port mapping panel of airport admin that you wish to allow access to via the global internet as well as the tcp or udp port number for the traffic to be directed. For example port 5003 for FileMakerPro or port 20 and 21 for ftp. You should also implement security policies to protect your network and hosts.
Since you said that it works for 12 hours you must have the basics set up correctly. All you need now is to get a static ip address assigned to you from your ISP or use a service such as http://www.dyndns.com/

  • Airport Extreme & Remote Access for database application

    Hi There,
I have spent an entire week of my time between apple, apple consultants and networking experts trying to get a access remotely to a simple database program inside an wireless network. I have read the discussions on remote access thru the AEBS and port mapping.
I'm hoping an user here can help me with a foolproof solution that the 'apple experts' can seem to design?
All that is required to get this program up and running remotely is the ip address of my computer inside my wireless network. I have set that this computer to a static address but since my dsl provider uses dynamic IP's this doesn't seem to work (or it does for about 12 hours until the IP address of my AEBS is changed). Will port mapping work for me or is my only solution an up-charged static IP?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions......the thought of spending another week on this is frightening!

  • Storage solution help me

hi iam new to storage dealing
i want to store the data in a single place 50TB storage set up that shared data should be used by 10 computers (includes windows systems and mac systems) single file has to be used by 4 users at a time there should be no problem in sharing the data and speed to read the data and also all the 10 users has to have the control to read and write the data in the 50TB shared storage
please help me what should be needed for the setup
    i want urgently
    thanks in advance

Can you give more information? What kind of file are you sharing that requires multiple connections. Samba is pretty universal for Windows and Mac but there are restrictions for some files to be opened at the same time. I have an old Foxpro app (that is being retired) lot of users using on a Samba share but security is out the window with old 16 bit apps. So samba is pretty easy to implement.
As for storage hardware, Oracle has a storage array "Sun ZFS Storage 7120 Appliance" that I use in my datacenter and it works really good and is very easy to manage.

  • Help with NAS Remote Access

    Here's what I have:
    Synology DS212J
Airport Extreme Base Station Gen 4 running latest firmware
    Running Lion
    Here's what I have done:
Changed NAS to use Manual Configuration. IP set to: 10.0.1.14 (after reading some forums here and there I have now changed this to 10.0.1.202 (to be outside the range of DCHP address)
In Airport Extreme I have configured Port Forwarding for port 80 and 7000 entering the private ip of the NAS 10.0.1.14 and now 10.0.1.202 and filled in the TCP ports with the appropriate port, restarted router.
After reading more posts in the forums I checked the NAS and my Mac Firewalls. Nothing...not turned on. I have since gone back into the NAS Firewall settings after reading a post to allow access for Photostation, File station...just in case it makes a differnece
Obtained a static IP from my ISP - ISP does not block any ports
Canyouseeme.org always gives a Timed out message when I try and check port forwarding
Everything works perfect on LAN...just remote I can't seem to get.  Some nice iphone apps I'd like to use remotely and use my Air to access when away from home.
    Questions:
Is it necessary to also configure a Static IP on my Airport Extreme...I haven't as my understanding is that only the DS needs one?  If I do could some kindly step this out for me?
I have previously changed some settings in my router for unblock-us http://support.unblock-us.com/customer/ ... 27...could this be the problem?
Thanks to anyone that might be able to help. I can post screen shots also or could send privately! I have noted that you must be at an outside computer to test access and of course tried that as well...but understand Canyouseeme.org should still say it can see the open port when I test from my network? I also have a DDNS and everything there shows Normal.
Hoping for something obvious and stupid on my part that someone can point out!

so if i understand correctly this should work?
    WAN IP 208.160.90.22
    router ip address 192.168.1.1
    camera ip 192.168.1.200
to access the camera i would type in http://208.160.90.22:1024
thanks greatly!  i'm trying to use this camera to monitor a boiler to make sure it's operating in this cold weather we are having...

  • Itunes on NAS and accessed on 2 laptops

    Hi All
This is my first post...so please excuse any mistakes
    I have a NAS ... (Dlink DNS 320 Sharecenter)
I have copied some of my CD's to this NAS, and renamed all the files and all is well
There is 2 people (myself and my wife) who have 2 different Ipods.
Both of us are using Windows 7 laptops...
Each of us has our own Apple account, and as such, have the different Itunes and music tastes/playlists
Please help me...as I want to know....
The best way to configure Itunes on both laptops (hers and mine) that will allow us to have access to the NAS music, and also be able to add our own purchases to our own laptops only. (I really don't want alot of her music...and she not mine)
I do want the NAS folder to be self updating into Itunes (on both laptops)... as I am still copying the last 20 odd CD's into the NAS and then want the ability to automatically have the added NAS music/folders update in Itunes
I know that this music will not be available on the laptops when travelling...but this is not an issue, as we both have our own ipods.
This would simply be to manage playlists...add new music....delete old songs from the ipods...etc etc
    Anyone help please?

Surely someone knows how to do this?

  • Itunes - airport express - remote speaker not compatible?

Airport Express unit (AX) connects to my network and verified to be connected to the network just fine...but on itunes (v. 7.4.2.4) on my desktop (Dell Dim E510 with wireless, Windows XP, Linksys router WRT350N with AX for airtunes)...when I switch speaker to the AX/stereo unit, comes back with message - "the remote speaker xxx is not compatible with this version of itunes"... I've battled this issue for a long time -- any idea what is the problem?

OK I got it working again. I'm not sure exactly what did the trick, but I'd recommend the following:
    1. Repair your wireless modem connection via your taskbar (rick-click on the Wireless Network Connection, Repair)
    2. Start itunes while the Airport Express Setup Assistant is running
    3. Restart your computer
    4. Keep trying, after 2 days it's working again (???)

  • Help with Time Capsule remote access

I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro and a Time Capsule. I have registered with a MobileMe account and have specified the details of this in the Advanced section of AirPort utility. However, I don't know what else I need to do to enable me to access the Time Capsule remotely? The Time Capsule is set up on a bridge with my existing router and is performing backups, so I believe that this is working as it should. Any advice would be much appreciated as I'm new to Macs! Many thanks.

Hello morph1977. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I believe the issue is that you have the Time Capsule (TC) behind another router.
I assume that you want to take advantage of BacktoMyMac (BTMM) to access the TC with your MobileMe account ... correct?
If so, two things must be present in order for BTMM to be successful: 1) Routers on both ends of the connection must support either UPnP or NAT-PMP. Note: The AirPort and TC both support NAT-PMP, and 2) The router with the host device you are trying to reach must have a publicly reachable IP address.
BTMM only works with either a public IP address or with automated port mapping via NAT-PMP or UPnP.
    Here's roughly how BTMM works:
    1. For a computer connected to the Internet via a router that assigns it a network address, BTMM asks the router for configuration information.
    2. BTMM sends this information to MobileMe: BTMM tells MobileMe where the computer is located and how to reach it on the network or via the Internet. This information is stored on the MobileMe’s servers.
    3. When connecting to a remote computer, your copy of BTMM creates a secure connection with the other computer, using the information about that computer’s
location and configuration stored on MobileMe.
Since the TC is behind another router and configured as a bridge, the only thing that needs to be configured on it is to identify the MobileMe account(s) that will access it using the AirPort Utility. The key would be to make sure that existing router has either NAT-PMP or UPnP enabled.

  • Airport Disk - Remote Access

Hi! I just got the new Airport Extreme and I hooked up a USB disk. I can use the disk from the finder by mounting it...etc and it works great!
Now I would like to connect to this disk from anywhere (i have a static IP), so is it possible to connect to the disk over WAN via FTP or something? I know my way around the port forwarding procedure, I have just set up VNC so I can access my macbook from anywhere...
But this disk is connected directly to the airport, so which ports to forward and which protocol to use...? In the airport utility there is an option to enable disk sharing over WAN... but how does one connect to this disk?
    Thanks in advance!

Don't I have to specify a port to connect via public IP??
You shouldn't have to if you use the Go->Connect to Server... item in the Finder.
Port 548 is the port used.
I can't connect to it even with the local ip (192.168.2.1).
When you are on the LAN side of the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) you should see the disk appear in the Finder's sidebar.

  • Airport and remote access

I want to set up a eMac as a Filemaker server for a small office of two (Mac) computers networked wirelessly using an Extreme where the FileMaker can be accessed outside the office via the internet.
I would love to have the best way to do this.
I think I need a DSL modem with a static IP for the eMac/FileMaker and have it provide another dynamic port for the Extreme but I wonder if Extreme can create/distribute dynamic IPS as well so that I could use a single staic IP -- in either case, what would the setup be like?
Further, I wonder if perhaps a VPN for accessing FileMaker can be used and how that would work?
Also, the eMac would have Quicken for occasional use and would contain sensitive finacial data -- would the built-in Apple OSX Tiger firewall be robust enough in this case?
    Thanks in advance:)
MacBook Pro 1.83 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2 GIG RAM

Basically, I want to know if, I have a DSL modem with
one staic IP and since the Extreme can act as DHCP
server, can the LAN port be connected to the eMac
yielding only the static IP and the then via the
wireless feature distribute IPs for the other two
    office Macs?
    Yes.
Base Station Options, enable Default Host.
If so, what's the best setup strategy?
Personally I wouldn't do it that way.
I would create a VPN connection to your office network then the remote client will be able to connect to the Filemaker server as though they were on the same network.
VPN server software is available as part of OS X Server (not the desktop version).
    Some routers have VPN capability.
For my VPN server I use a Windows XP Pro box and map the ports accordingly on my router.

  • ISCSI storage solution Recommendation ?

Hi I am trying to understand where exactly does iSCSI fit in the storage solutions.
    is iSCSI recommended ?
    My interest:
I would like to provide our users, access to our mass storage, provided by, Sun Fire V890 via 6130 Storage Arrays.
Our users working from their windows box would like to have their mass storage directories mounted as their network drive. Does iSCSI software initiative or hardware HBA's fit into these requirements ???
Can anyone please provide any form of guidance to develope an understanding of the requirements.
    thank you!

    Hi,
Depending on your situation iSCSI might be a low-cost replacement of a Fibre Channel SAN.
Both are block-level storage solutions. That is, the protocols access devices by reading/writing blocks of raw data not knowing what file they belong to.
The advantages of iSCSI are that it communicates over IP and as such is even able to use the internet for connecting servers and storage placed in a remote location (FC is able to do that too but requires extra, expensive, routing hardware).
Furthermore, if it is about connecting local storage to a server iSCSI can use a basic UTP cabling based ethernet infrastucture which is a lot cheaper than an FC infrastructure. One should however keep in mind that iSCSI requires a separate network to be able to perform well, so connecting iSCSI devices over a company network that is used for other communications too is not a good idea.
To get good performance an iSCSI ethernet infrastructure should at least be Gigabit based and should be redundant to get availability.
FC SAN's are definetly the ones with the better performance. This is due to the infrastructures which are running at 4Gbit/s (most common in recent setups). iSCSI is mostly implemented based on a 1 Gbit/s infrastructure.
As said, both FC and iSCSI are block-based. If you need the storage to replace a fileserver both are not the right solation. In that case you need a NAS (network attached storage) solution which are able to get you file-sharing capabilities right away (CIF, NFS etc.).
(iSCSI and/or FC can be behind the NAS-device as the actual storage, that would involve so called gateways).
An issue that always comes up using iSCSI is that it is not fully vendor independant. The server to connect have to run a so called iSCSI Initiator and, to avoid problems, only those initiators can be used that are certified by the storage vendor. Furthermore the iSCSI initiator takes quite a lot of CPU power of the server to connect so the server should have a lot of CPU power left to handle it. There is a solution for this: using rather expensive networkcards that have an initiator implemented in hardware (so called iSCSI HBA's, or TOE= TCP Offload Engines, HBA's allow for booting from iSCSI too) but besides of being expensive these initiators need to be on the storage vendor's certified list too.
So iSCSI is not as open as it seems to be in the first place (Things are getting better however).
FC is not free of all these compatibiliy problems. In fact, depending on the storage vendor you chooce, there are several compatibiltyy matrices to be met in order for the total solution to be certified. You should leave the design of a FC SAN to a single specialist who knows were to find and how to use these matrices.
My advise would be to first decide on the budget (based on business requirements), than decide on wether file or block access is needed from the storage device and what OS-platforms are to connect, and decide on the performance you need.
This would lead you to the right choice for storage technology.

    Willeon

I also have a very similar concern.
I am about to purchase a hard drive enclosure with ethernet capability. If you go to ebay and search for "3.5 ethernet" you will find many "USB 2.0 LAN Ethernet Enclosure" for $30-40. Then I will buy a 3.5 IDE hard drive of 500GB for about $100.
My idea is to attach this setting to my Netgear wireless router and access photos, music and videos from my laptop and desktop.

  • Airport Extreme blocking remote access for my NAS?

Having spent over 2 hours on the phone to both LG and Apple Care I still can't get my remote access working for my NAS. I don't know much about networks, but I am slowly having to learn! Apple care seem to think that the AEBS might not be compatible?? I've tried lots of forums, lots of google self help and exhausted the customer service options - you're probably thinking I should give up. Well this is my last chance saloon - any help would be greatly appreciated.
    This is my set up:
NAS: LG N2R1DD2 2 Bay DVD Network Attached Storage 2 TB
    AEBS: MB763LL/A (A1301)
    ISP: Virgin cable
Everything else on the NAS works a treat, it's just the remote access that is the problem. LG spent a long time on the phone looking into this and said that it is the router. I've checked with Virgin and they confirm they do not block any ports, so am pretty sure issue is with router. I've set up the NAS correctly to enable DDNS and UPnP, which it reports as successful and working correctly. I've enabled NAT port forwarding on the router, and tried to manually open up port 80.
Any thoughts would be most welcome.
    Thanks.

I am not sure but I think you skipped a step. Look around for the use of consolidate library function.
I did the same thing and after I pointed to the right drive on the Airport Disk It worked flawlessly allowing me to stream to my powerbook from all over the house.
Unfortunately, once I went to bed and laptop and MyBook Pro went to sleep, I started havong problems.
Looks like this function of Airport n is still very Alpha.
    Hope that helps

  • Remotely access usb western digital 2tb storage connected to airport

Hi everyone, just wanted get some feedback on this set up, if it is possible, and how to configure the settings properly. I want my Netgear n600 router Version 1 + Airport Express + WD 2tb hard drive to = a personal cloud that I can remotely access. I have a netgear n600 WNDR3400 that has a 2.4ghz and a 5.0ghz  wifi network capability. I 30-30-30 flashed the netgear n600 router so that I have dd-wrt firmware( DD-WRT v24-sp2 (12/08/11) mega) running on the router instead of the restrictive built-in netgear web interface. I have an Airport Express 802.11g version 6.3 that I have connected to the netgear n600 router via ethernet cable. Connected to the airport express, via usb 2.0, is a Western Digital 2tb hard drive (externally powered). When I am booted up from the internal macbook pro hard drive mac side (I also have Bootcamp Windows 7 installed that I can boot from) my mac's time machine application starts backing up to the WD hard drive when I connect the usb hard drive to my macbook pro. The entire WD hard drive is formatted as HFS+, however I am considering partitioning the WD at least 3 ways, 1250 gigs HFS+ for mac storage, 500 gigs NFTS for windows storage, 250 gigs for unux / linux storage to host my website. I want to remotely access the WD storage space connected to the Airport Express, specifically, each individual hard drive partition based upon what remote system I am using and the respective partition storage format. If I am on a windows computer, I want to have a 500 gig "cloud" that I can access any computer via a windows Start -> Run or map the network drive. I want the same home server ability as a 1250 gig cloud that any mac can access. I want to have remote read or write priviledges when I connect to this server through the mac finder. Similarly, I want to connect through a linux terminal to have access to my 250gig partition for unix. One last thing, I want to host my website on the WD plugged into my Airport Express. Does anyone have any suggestions what dd-wrt settings I need to change to make this work? I do not understand port forwarding very well at all. I think I understand that I need to have a static ip address and then forward the ports.  I just do not know what to set my static ip to, or what settings I need to change in the dd-wrt web interface for forwarding ports. Can anyone please tell me which ports do I forward to remotely access my usb storage and personal website? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Much obliged, Keento

    The Express doesn't support HDDs.

You have to pay for online storage, someone has to pay to keep the lights on. As far a getting it on the Finder sidebar, you did something wrong. That is where mine resides, see below.

  • Remote Access to Airport Time capsule - Noone is providing a simple and workable solution

Can Anyone provide a clear, simple and workable solution to have remote access to Time Machine Disk, Please please help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you say noone is providing a solution.. we have no idea who the noone is??
Did you read Tesserax document on remote access??
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3413
Tesserax is definitely someone.. and he has done a very good job of giving you 3 alternatives.. all of which work at least for some people.
If you have read that.. then please tell us what you have tried and what failed??
The issue most people have is not actually access to the TC .. it is the fact that you do not have a public static IP address. If you really want simple access to the TC it is dead easy.. buy a static IP from your ISP. Then you never have problems. Just directly access it using AFP (which does mean you have to do it from a Mac). Or buy a VPN router and put the TC in bridge behind it.. you still need a public IP that is static to make this simple and workable.
ISP deliberately use dynamic IP addresses to prevent you hosting servers.. The TC is a file server in this setup. They are trying to stop you doing this since part of requirements are you don't host servers on non-business accounts.
What we need to know if you run into trouble..
The exact network layout in your home? How is the TC configured. It must be main router with public IP on the WAN interface for BTMM to work.
Which method you are using.. please use Tesserax's numbered system?? His methods are pretty much in order of ease.. BTMM is the apple method to do it. Use this first and foremost.
And what device are you trying to use to access it from remotely??
You need to recognise here that Apple has made this easy for only one protocol.. AFP. No other protocol is fully supported other than by trickery.
