Storage Space Setup Hardware Requirement

Hi,
Currently I am testing the Storage Space on Windows 2012 R2 on Supermicro X7DBE+ server.
The server has 8 Bays and I am testing it with only 3 320GB HDD (all internal). From the HDD bay, it connected to PCI-e RAID controller that is not supported JBOD. Since the RAID controller not support JBOD, so I connected the SATA ports directly to the
SATA on motherboard.
I use 1 HDD for OS and the other 2 for 2-way Mirros (thin provisioning) and am successfully created 2-Way Mirror. To test in case of 1 HDD failure, 1 removed 1 HDD while the server is running. In theory, the server should still running normally. But in my
testing, after I removed 1 HDD, then not long after that the server crashed.
I tested twice from scratch and both time the server crashed.
What I am not sure, is it because of the JBOD requirement or not?
However, I could access the 2 HDD from the 2-way mirror on Win 8 PC. Once I connected the HDD to USB, Win 8 detected the storage pool automatically.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Mark, thanks for your response.
Currently we are planning to upgrade our File Server, which also functioning as our AD server. Now our File Server disk space is almost full. The server is setup using Raid 5 and not be able to expand it, easily.
After done some reading and learn what Storage Space can do compare to RAID, is very interesting.
So with Storage Space capability, this is what I am trying to achieve:
Able to expand the disk space easily. For example if using 2 1TB for mirroring, I can replace the disk to bigger one, one by one after it synced
Able to access the data of the disk on other system (which Storage Space can do. I could access the contains of the disk from WS2012 Storage Space on my Win 8 PC)
Provides  data redundancy with 2 disk failures (server keeps functioning without crash, like Raid 5 do)
Less time consuming for preparation/initial setup
The company I work for is medium size so not requiring cluster or huge disk space. The plan is to use 1 server with the 8 bays (2 disks setup as mirror for the OS partition and the rest for the data with max 6 disks as many as required)
as simple as possible all in 1 server, not using external enclosure.
Do I need to connect the 8 bays controller to the PCIe controller that has JBOD capability (does it has to be specifically mentioned support JBOD)?
How do you setup Storage Space using the Raid controller? I read somewhere to setup Raid 0 for each disks on the Raid controller then setup using Storage Space. Will I be able to remove the disk (after setup SS) then access the data on
other OS?
Thank you for your advice.

  • Hardware requirements to setup high available SOA system on production env

    Hi All,
Can anyone tell me the recommended hardware requirements to setup a highly available SOA system on production machine?
    Thanks
    Jahangir

We have a 2 managed servers setup in 2 different VMs (SuSe Linux )
The minimum recommended hardware and system configuration requirements for each VM on which Oracle SOA Suite, Oracle Service Bus, Oracle BAM
    components are installed is:
    •     4 CPU Cores; each with a clock speed of 1.5 GHz or greater
    •     8 GB RAM (Physical Memory)
    •     Disk Space: 50 GB SAN Disk Space on each VM
Please note we have separate domain for all three components. Typically JVM size is 1GB for admin server and 2GB for managed servers. With this configuration, the memory usage is always around 90%.. If you want to reduce the memory usage %, you may have to increase the RAM size..

  • Hardware required for RAC setup at home

    Hi All,
Could you please suggest the Hardware required for practicing RAC at home.
    Regards,
    VN

    Hi, "user7202581",
For practicing purposes, you could consider a VBox / OVM based setup at home. We have used those for Hands On Labs in the course of Oracle Open World more than once. I recommend you use a machine with at least 8GB memory and dual core (HT enabled) processors. Some configuration examples: Lenovo Laptop, ThinkPad, 8GB, 320GB HDD, i5 dual core, 2.5 GHz, Win 7 or a Mac Mini, latest version, i5 dual core, 2.3GHz and 8GB memory would do the trick for a two node cluster. Note that I mention the hosting OS in case you use VBox. For OVM based setups you either have to use a dual boot system or use a dedicated machine. You will be somewhat restricted with respect to the hardware failures you can impose on this system obviously (due to the VM setup), but for practicing purposes, you should find those environments sufficient, I think. Also see: RAC on OVM templates: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/vm/rac-template-11grel2-166623.html
    Hope that helps. Thanks,

I was trying to download the new Black Ops (Strike Team) app and when I try to download it, it says I don't have enough storage space. I made sure I had 1.31 GB of space (like it requires) but it still says I don't have enough space. I even tried to delete more 2.5 GB (I have the iPhone 4S) and the app specifically says that is is compatable with iPhone 4S. I even tried rebooting the phone a couple times before downloading, but it still says the same thing.

The app you are trying to download my be a zipped file and more space than 1.3GB.  go to settings/general/usage and delete what you no longer want to make more space

  • Statistics setup for 2LIS_11 and no storage space available internal table

Hi, I am running statistical setup for 2LIS_11_VAITM. It ran for 10 hours and failed with an ABAP run time error. The error is "no storage space available for extending an internal table". For 11 application, the selection options is sales org, company code and sales document. We have tried twice, and already drilled down to the level of sales org and company code, but still with error.
The only option is sales documents.
The volume of the data is 16 million records around in VBAP table which needs to be in the setup table.
What is the criteria to categorize the sales document.
Can we use order types? We have 200 values in the order types. And I am not sure the document ranges in each order type is clearly defined and not overlapping each other, so that we could load those in the setup table.
Please advise!! Or if you have other suggestions!
    Thanks!

    Hi
It could be because of main memory problem... so Restrict your selections and do the statistical setup
by the way how many comp codes you have? restrict with comp codes or doc ranges

How much impact would does CPU core density has with Storage Space 2012 R2?  Given the option of dual socket 5500 series quad core vs dual socket 5600 series hex core for a SMB environment (attach up to maximum of 2 x 24 JBOD), would there be any
significant performance improvement?  Dedup feature would be enable, at least on some virtual disk, along with SSD storage tiering.

Try running Performance Monitor on a Scale-Out File Server and you'll see CPU and memory usage (unless CSV cache is enabled) is pretty sparse. Dedupe does not matter at all as optimization process kicks in only when there's no I/O (CPU is not used for anything
    either way).
P.S. That's one of the reasons why I personally don't buy approach of scaling CPU (Hyper-V) and storage (SoFS) layers separately from each other.
StarWind Virtual SAN clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • Old system disk setup into a Windows 8 storage space

I have a old 2TB Windows system disk. How do I prepare the disk so that it can be added as a drive into Windows storage space?
I have already deleted all but on partitions (except the system reserved partition) but Storage Space management still cannot see the new physical drive that can be added.

    Hi,
The disk added should be un-formatted/un-partitioned drives, please make sure the disk has no partitions, and then add it again.

  • Storage spaces simple mirror question

I just have a simple mirror at the moment, with just two 1tb drives in mirror mode, and it works just fine.  Two things I do wonder.  If one drive fails, I assume the files would be preserved on the other.  I wonder however if it can be plugged
into another Windows box, a Windows 7 machine for example, and read by that machine, or if it can only be read by the machine on which it was setup?
I have assumed Storage Spaces was like hardware raid in this way, but now I wonder....

    Hi,
For mirror mode, it means that Data is duplicated on two or three physical disks, and  this storage layout requires at least two disks to protect you from a single disk failure.
But you can't view the content in the disk since Storage Spaces records information about pools and storage spaces on the physical disks that compose the storage pool. Therefore, your pool and storage spaces are preserved when you move an entire storage
pool and its physical disks from one computer to another.
Windows Server 2012 starts storage that could potentially be shared with a cluster in a safe state. For Storage Spaces, that means the first time Windows connects to a storage pool, the pool starts as read-only and the storage spaces will start in a detached
state. To access your data, you must set the storage pool to read-write and then attach the storage spaces.
These steps do not apply to Windows 8 – storage pools start as read-write and storage spaces start as attached.

  • Storage spaces + Hyper-V with multiple 1GBe nics for storage?

    Hi guys!
So I just got my private cloud hardware. I actually put in the order before summer, but due to firmware and certification issues on my desired SuperMicro JBODs delivery was seriously delayed. So much that I've completely forgotten my networking ideas. I
need help/verification. Or at least a URL - most described setups are 10 GBe nowadays... Or even a "not gonna work"  :-)
My setup is supposed to be a 3 JBOD, 2 head node storage spaces/sfos cluster providing storage to a 4 node Hyper-V cluster. I didn't have a budget for a 10 GBe setup, but got a great price on a lot of 1 GBe nics. After allocating management, Hyper-V, etc
I have 3x 1 GBe ports left on all Hyper-V and Storage servers.
I think my original plan was to create three subnets and add one nic from each server. And then I guess I've imagined some kind of SMB3 magic discovering these paths between Hyper-V and storage and just aggregating bandwitdh and providing fault tolerance
by sprinkling fairy dust. Must have been the heat...
So now I'm "replanning" and I realize that I'm going to create a failover cluster at the storage level providing a cluster name and IP. I'm thinking the management subnet where domain info resides is appropriate, but then what about the other three
subnets? I don't want to flood my management subnet with storage traffic, but do want bandwidth and resilience. Did I make a design error, and how do I make the best of the situation?
Disclaimer: My previous experience on virtualization clusters is ISCSI SAN and 2008 R2 Hyper-V clusters. Storage Spaces is completely new to me :-)
And due to overlapping technologies I struggled a bit on placing this thread. Hope I got it right

    Hello,
i did not understand how many NICs you have in each Host. Hyper-V Cluster with 1 GBe NICs work as long as you know that it is not 10 GBe.
In this article is the complete Hyper-V Cluster design in checklist form. I think you should work with this list for some further ideas:

Sorry that i cant give a better answer, but i lack information about about your environment.

  • Install Windows Server 2012 R2 VM on Storage Spaces with Storage Tiers

    Hey guys
In my small/medium sized company we will soon update to Windows Server 2012 R2. I would like to implement virtual servers using Hyper-V. I didn't find a lot of information about Hyper-V in combination with storages spaces and autoamted storage tiers.
And this is very confusing to me as it seems to me that this would be the best practice as it is the most cost-efficient and most elegant solution.
    My ideal scenario:
With Hyper-V I virtualize two Windows Server 2012 R2 instances. So two separate virtual machines.
I use the following disk setup:
    1x cheap HDD  40GB for hyper-v server 2012 r2 core.
    2x SSD 200GB (enterprise-grade)
    2x HDD 4TB (7.2k, enterprise-grade)
    Step 1:
I will install Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 Core on the 40GB HDD. Via command line, I will create a storage pool with automated tiered storage using the SSDs and the HDDs in mirrored mode the following way:
With Tiered Storage, I create a storage pool containing the SSDs and the HDDs. Then I create storage space A (1TB) and B (3.2TB) with the SSDs in a mirrored setup and the HDDs in a mirrored setup. The SSDs for the „hot files“ and the HDDs for the „cold files“.
    Step2:
Ontop of the storage space A I want to install the first Windows Server 2012 R2 instance with Active directory. On storage space B I want to install the second Windows Server 2012 R2 instance for a business application to run on it.
    Conclusion:
The SSDs are mirrored and therefore one SSD can fail.
The 4TB HDDs are mirrored and therefore one HDD can fail.
I have a fast and easy scalable environment.
But in the Internet I found many information that it’s not possible to install an operating system onto a storage tier.
    Question 1:
    Is this setup possible?
    Question 2:
If this setup is possible, why is not everyone doing it?
    Question 3:
Is it possible to do Step 1 over a GUI from a remote machine?
    Question 4:
If the creation of Storage Tiers in the Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 is not possible. Would it work to use a Windows Server 2012 R2 as a parent system on the 40GB HDD? To do Step 1?
I would gladly get some feedback of people knowing Storage Tiers well.
    Thanks a lot!

I would absolutely prefer a GUI. But a Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Licence allows you to run two VM machines.
It also grants you a physical installation ("POSE" in the licensing documents). You can buy one copy of WS2012R2 Standard, install it on the hardware, enable Hyper-V, and then operate two virtual machines with WS2012R2 Standard ("VOSE"
in the licensing documents). The only restriction is that the management operating system (POSE) can only run services and applications meant to manage the virtual machines and/or the management operating system. The Hyper-V Server license is the same way
so it's not really any different.
In short, given the benefits of the GUI at your stage of learning, you have no solid reason not to install the full system and take advantage of it. You can disable the GUI later once you get your footing. Or not. Whatever suits you. However, in response
to your Question 3, you can do this all remotely. Once you get WS2012R2 installed in a guest, you can use it to manage the management operating system if you want. There are many options.
But then I would also need to have redundancy on the 40GB HDD as if this HDD brakes, all others brake as well?
Yes, you're going to want some redundancy for the management operating system. But, you've listed 5 drives in your original layout. You don't really have a 5-bay system, do you? Is there an empty sixth bay? Could you not get two 40 GB drives instead of one
    and use hardware RAID-1?

  • Storage Spaces: Virtual Disk taken offline during file copy, marked as "This disk is offline because it is out of capacity", but plenty of free space

Server 2012 RC. I'm using Storage Spaces, with two virtual disks across 23 underlying physical disks.
    * First virtual disk is fixed provisioning, parity across 23 physical disks: 10,024GB capacity
    * Second virtual disk is fixed provisioning, parity across the remaining space on 6 of the same physical disks: 652GB capacity
These have been configured as dynamic disks, with an NTFS volume spanned across the two (larger virtual disk first). Total volume size 10,676GB. For more details of the hardware, and why the configuration is like this, see: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserver8gen/thread/c35ff156-01a8-456a-9190-04c7bcfc048e
I'm copying several TB from a network share to this volume. It is very slow at ~12MB/sec, but works. However, three times so far, several hours in to the file copy and with plenty of free space remaining, the 10,024GB virtual disk is suddenly taken offline.
This obviously then fails the spanned volume and stops the file copy.
The second time, I took screenshots, below. The disk (Disk27) is marked offline due to "This disk is offline because it is out of capacity". And the disk in the spanned volume is marked as missing (which is what you would expect when one of its member disks
    is offline).
I can then mark the disk (Disk27) back online again, and this restores the spanned volume. I can then re-start the file copy from where it failed. There doesn't appear to be any data loss, but it does cause an outage that requires manual attention. As you
can see, there is plenty of space left on the spanned volume.
Each time this has happened, there are a few event 150 errors in the System event log: "Disk 27 has reached a logical block provisioning permanent resource exhaustion condition.". Source: Disk.

This error seems to be related to thin provisioning of disks. I found this:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh848068(v=vs.85).aspx. But both these Virtual Disks are configured as Fixed, not Thin provisioning, so it shouldn't apply.
My thoughts: the virtual disk should not spuriously go offline during a file copy, even if it was out of space. And in any case, there is plenty of free space remaining. Also, I don't understand the reason for why it is marked as offline ("This disk is offline
because it is out of capacity"). Why would a disk go offline because it was out of thin capacity, rather than just returning an "out of disk space" error while keeping it online.

Interesting Thread, I've been having the same issue. I had a failed hardware RAID that was impossible to recover in place, so after being forced to do a 1:1 backup, I find myself with 5 2TB hard drives to play with. Storage Spaces seemed like an interesting
way to go until I started facing the issues we share.
So my configuration is A VM Running Windows Server 2012 RC with 5 Virtualized Physical drives using a SCSI interface, 2TB in size that make up my storage pool. A Single Thinly provisioned Disk of 18 TB (using 1 disk for parity)
Interestly enough, write speed has not been an issue on this machine (30~70MB/s, up from 256k on the beta)
Of note to me is this error in my event log 13 minutes before the drive disappeared:
"The shadow copies of volume E: were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time.Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied."Source: volsnap, Event ID: 25, Level: Error
    followed by:
"The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: E:, DeviceName: \Device\HarddiskVolume17.(The physical resources of  this disk have been exhausted.)"Source: Ntfs (Microsoft-Windows-Ntfs), Event ID: 140, Level: Warning
I figure the amount of space available to me before I start encountering physical limits is in the vicinity of about 7TB. It dropped out for the second time at 184 GB.
FYI, the number of columns created for me is 5

  • ISE Hardware Requirements

Cisco's docs are not providing the information in regards to ISE hardware requirements.  I am looking at 3 different documents and see 3 different requirements.
Does anyone have the tried an true numbers for the ISE deployment?  Specifically for the PSN?
Also, i there a hardware restrictions on the servers that can be used in the event the customer decides to go with their own hardware rather than using VM?
thanks for any assistance anyone can offer.
    Mike
    Received answer from Cisco...
Posting in case anyone else needs this info
    Your Question:
If I am using a distributed deployment, for example, running 1 node as admin and monitoring, another node for PSN, would I need 250gb disk space for each node?  Or would I use a shared 250gb disk space on a storage server?
    Answer:
As you informed that you are " running 1 node as admin and monitoring, another node for PSN, would I need 250gb disk space for each node ", so YES each node will have individual 250Gb of space.
Now the node running as admin and monitoring would have to share the 250Gb available on the ISE on which they would be implemented.
    Your Question:
Additionally, say I were to scale and create 2 admin nodes, and 4 PSNs, how would the disk space work in that case?
    Answer:
As the 2 Admin nodes would be on individual ISE hardware appliance, so individually they would have 250Gb of space and if the 4 PSN are also the same ISE hardware, then each PSN would have it's own 250Gb space.
    Your Question:
If however, the admin node and PSN were on the same chassis, different VM (if supported) how would the disk space work then?
    Answer:
If the VM used for the above scenario is only one and is configured according/equivalent to ISE hardware appliance, then the space mentioned (250Gb as example) would be shared between the two persona's.

  • How to design Storage Spaces with a large number of drives

I am wondering how one might go about designing a storage space for a large number of drives. Specifically I've got 45 x 4TB drives. As i am not extremely familiar with storage spaces, i'm a bit confused as to how I should go about designing this. Here is
how i would do it in hardware raid and i'd like to know how to best match this setup in Storage Spaces. I've been burned twice now by poorly designed storage spaces and i don't want to get burned again. I want to make sure if a drive fails, i'm able to properly
replace it without SS tossing it's cookies.
In the hardware raid world, i would divide these 45 x 4TB drives into three separate 15 disk Raid 6's. (Thus losing 6 drives to parity) Each raid 6 would show up as a separate volume/drive to the parent
OS. If any disk failed in any of the three raids, i would simply pull it out and put a new disk back in and the raid would rebuild itself.
Here is my best guess for storage spaces. I would create 3 separate storage pools each containing 15 disks. I would then create a separate
Dual Parity Virtual Disk for each pool. (Also losing 6 drives to parity) Each virtual disk would appear as a separate volume/disk
to the parent OS. Did i miss anything?
Additionally, is there any benefit to breaking up my 45 disks into 3 separate pools? Would it be better to create one giant pool with all 45 disks and then create 3 (or however many) virtual disks on top of that one pool?

    1) Try to avoid parity and esp. double parity RAIDs with a typical VM workload. It's dominated by small reads (OK) and small writes (not OK as whole parity stripe gets updated with any "ready-modify-write" sequence). As a result writes would be DOG slow.
Another nasty parity RAID characteristic is very long rebuild times... It's pretty easy to get second (third with double parity) drive failure during re-build process and that would render the whole RAID set useless. Solution would be to use RAID10. Much safer,
faster to work and rebuild compared to RAID5/6 but wastes half of raw capacity...
    2) Creating "islands" of storage is an extremely effective way of stealing IOPS away from your config. Typical modern RAID set would run out of IOPS long before running out of capacity so unless you're planning to have a file dump of an ice cold data or
CCTV storage you'll absolutely need all IOPS from all spindles @ the same time. This again means One Big RAID10, OBR10.
Hope this helped a bit :) Good luck!
