Storage Space Size vs Pool Size
Hi All:
I just finished installing WS2012R2E and getting all my clients connected, transferring them from my aging WHS V1
All seems to be working well but I'm scratching my head on the fact that the Storage Pool reports 3.63Tb of storage (I have 2 x 2Tb drives) but the storage space reports 16Tb.... I tried changing the "Storage Space Size (Maximum)" to
something closer to the actual storage pool capacity but no number seems acceptable to the field.
I get it (sort of) that the storage space is different from the pool, but it seems to me that if the dashboard storage tab reports the storage space with a Capacity of 16Tb it does not give a clear picture of my storage situation.
In addition to that quirk, the dashboard storage space window, hard drives tab reports 1Tb of used space but when I click into "Manage Storage Spaces" that window reports that I'm using 2.16Tb of the 3.63Tb - ?!
I've tried searching this with no joy - maybe I just haven't stumbled across the right doc yet... Can some one enlighten or point me to a detailed description of they way this is supposed to work?

Hi,
It seems that you directly click “Create a storage space” in dashboard. This wizard helps you create a default storage space on the server. The new storage space can tolerate on drive failure, and its size can group up to 16 TB.
You can click “Manage Storage Spaces” in dashboard then click “create a new pool and storage space” to specific the maximum size of the storage space.

Adding Capacity to Parity Storage Space
I'm having a problem understanding how the parity storage space capacity works. I have 5 drives in a parity storage space with a total capacity of 13.1 TB. I want to be able to use the maximum amount of storage where I can lose any of the 5 drives
and not lose any data. I recently added a 3 TB drive and I'm not sure how to figure out that maximum usable space. Below is the information I'm given when I go in to change the storage space settings.
Total Pool Capacity: 13.1 TB
Available Pool Capacity: 6.58 TB
Storage Space Size (maximum): 7.74 TB
Including Resiliency: 11.6 TB
I think this means that it takes 11.6 TB for my 7.74 TB storage space to be resilient enough to lose any single drive. Does that mean I should increase the "Storage Space Size (maximum)" until the "Including Resiliency" value shows
13.1 TB? I've done this and that value would be 8.8 TB. Or do I increase the "Storage Space Size (maximum)" value to 13.1 TB? This seems like a bad idea because I don't see how I would have the capability of losing a drive without
losing data.

What is your current situation?
As you want to have the capability of losing a drive without losing data, I think we need to use the RAID to accomplish this requirement.

When cost is an issue and redundancy and high performance are required, RAID-5 volumes are a good solution.
If we need to create RAID, we will need the motherboard support or the RAID controller.

Storage Spaces: SSD tier size incorrect when using EnclosureAware option in a pool
Hi folks,
We're about to deploy Storage Spaces in our test environment, but we encountered an issue while configuring Enclosure Awareness on Storage Pools.
When we create a Storage Pool (over 3 JBOD's) and set the option EnclosureAwarenessDefault to $True, the SSD tier size automatically decreases / shrinks to 12GB (sometimes 18GB sometimes 0GB).
Without EnclosureAwarenessDefault, we get 1110 GB of SSD size available.
The same behavior is seen when enabling -EnclosureAwareness on Storage Space (virtual disk) level.
A summary of our configuration:
3 SOFS connected twice to each JBOD (LSI 9207-8e - SES 3 ) = HCL certified
3 JBOD arrays (Quanta M4600H) (Firmware Management SCSI Enclosure Service (SES-2) = HCL certified
Each JBOD array has 16 HDD and 4 SSD.
SOFS are fully patched, including KB 2913766

After consulting with some senior engineers, please check the following:
Server manager does not let you set the column count of the space, which means that it is automatically selecting 6 as the column count, as there are 12 SSDs. Unfortunately, the column count must be less than the number of disks of each type in each
enclosure (limited by 4 SSDs), otherwise space creation will fail, and estimation will produce a small, somewhat random number. If you create a space through powershell and specify –NumberOfColumns 4 then it should work.

Storage Spaces, Columns and different Disk sizes
Let's assume the szenario of a 8-disk Storage Pool:
6x 4 TB HDD
2x 1 TB HDD
Now, a virtual Disk is created that uses a Mirrored-Layout and 4 Columns.
What will happen, once the written amount of data equals 1 TB per Disk?
Since the Drive is configured as double mirror with 4 Columns, will it:
- Stop accepting any data, since there is no 4th column available (The 1TB Disks are full)?
- Continue accepting data, but create a "pseudo-4-Column-Layout", where the actual 4th column is on the same disk as column 1,2 or 3?
- Switch to a 3 Column layout in order to utilize the remaining diskspace on disk 1-6? (If so, can the column count be restored later on, when adding more disks?)
- ...explode?
- Anyting else?

Columns correlate to underlying physical disks across which one stripe of data for a storage space is written. Since the virtual disk uses a Mirrored-Layout and 4 Columns, it will only get space equal to the size of 4*smallest drive=4*1=4TB, which will leave
portions of the larger drives unused. If the written amount of data equals 1 TB per Disk, you will add 2*4=8 disks to expand the virtual disk.

Server 2012 R2 Essentials - Restore Storage Spaces - Sector size mismatch
I am attempting to restore my R2 Essentials server storage spaces drive using the server restore process. I have purchased new larger hard drives to replace the existing ones. When the restore begins, it immediately fails with the following error:

The restore process did not succeed because the sector size of the restore destination volume is different than the sector size of the backup source volume. This can happen if you change the hard drive, configure a new Storage Spaces, or remove the
old Storage Spaces. Make sure that you restore the backup to a volume that uses the same sector size as the backup source.
Actually, after toying around with it I just restored files instead of the full drive. Not optimal, but same as a robocopy that I would have ended up doing otherwise.Hi ,
From the error we can see that the sector between source storage and target storage doesn't match, we can run the now command line to display their sector:

DPM Storage Pool on Windows Server 2012R2 iSCSI target Storage Spaces - supported?
Hi,
for migration purpose we need more space for one of our DPM 2012R2 Servers.
And we cannot buy more space for our NetAPPs..
So our idea was to use an Windows Server 2012R2 as an iSCSI target and use Storage Spaces.
I remember something that using an iSCSI target on Windows 2008 was not supported.
Is this configuration supported when usinf DPM 2012R2 on Win 2012R2 and the target is Win2012R2 aswell?

Under 8.0 I had three 4-terabyte drives set up as a Storage Pool in Storage Spaces. I had five storage-space drives using this pool I had
been using them for months with no problems. After upgrading to 8.1 ( which gave no errors ) the drives no longer exist. Going into "Storage Spaces" in the control panel, I do not see my existing storage pool or storage drives. I'm prompted
to create a new Pool and Storage Spaces. If I click the "Create Pool" it does not list the three drives I used previously as available to add.
Device Manager shows all three drives as present and OK.
Disk Management shows Disks 0,1,2,6. The gap in between 2 and 6 is where the 3,4,5 storage spaces drives were.
Nothing helpful in the event log or the services.
I've downloaded the ReclaiMe Storage Spaces recovery tool and it sees all of my logical drives with a "good" prognosis for recovery. I've not gone down that road yet though because it requires separate physical drives to copy everything to
and they want $299 for the privilege.
Does anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking of doing a fresh 8.1 install to another drive to see if it can see it or reinstalling 8.1 to the existing drive in the hope that it will just suddenly work. Or possibly going back to 8.0.

I currently have 2 * 2TB drives in a storage pool. I have a 2 TB storage space assigned to this pool (lets call them A and B). I have 2TB of mirrored storage across 4TB of drives. All is well...
If I add a third 2TB drive "C" to the storage pool, how will 2-way mirroring work now? My hope is that it will evenly mirror across each drive in the pool ( 1TB mirrored across A + B, 1TB across A+ C and 1TB across B + C) giving me effectively
3TB of mirrored storage.
If it does work as I hope, does the server rebalance the mirroring? Say I have already used 1.8GB of storage by the time I add in the 3rd drive, there is only 0.2GB on each of the morrored drives available. When I add in the 3rd drive, if the
server does not re-allocate, then I would only gain 0.4GB of storage (0.2GB A+C, 0.2GB B+C) leaving 1.4GB unusable.
If not as I hoped, how do I make use of the 3rd drive? I assume the 3rd drive is useless in that pool unless I do 3-way mirroring or I add another 4th drive?

A Storage Spaces mirror configuration stores 2 copies of each data block on 2 different physical drives. However, it does not balance the data. So in your specific example, adding a third drive to a mirror environment won't help much.
You would really need to add a fourth 2 TB drive at the same time.

Thanks for quick reply. Sorry, I prefer not to share my designs so I cannot send you my sample of Ai file or screenshots. I hope you understand.
Anyway, I have about 50 to 60 elements used 3D effects and 60 elements used brushes. And about 20 some elements I defined as pattern swatches (about half of them used gradient). Also, added drop shadow, zigzag effect and accent edges on 5 elements. And 3 layers filled with patterns (my artboard size is 1220 px W x 1500 px H). I have my layers/artboard/ color & pattern swatches/ appearance panels opened up when working in Ai.
I hope this gives you some idea how much I am doing and what I am doing with my Ai file. And hope that you can advise if there should be problem if doing a lot in one file? I just cannot stop designing sometimes.
Added this- I have 18 artboards and 22 layers in my Ai file. Photoshop doesn't have this problem when working with a lot of layers, only Illustrator does.

Removing disk from a volume storage space 2012 r2
Hi, I've got a issue, here's my situation, i'm using storage space on a windows server 2012 R2 for my backups. Fisrt I had 14 3tb disk in mirror so there was 19tb usable for date. Now I needed more space so I just added 14 more disk and I extended the virtual
disk to 38tb. Then when I wnet into windows management -> disk management to extend the partition to use the full 38tb, I got the following error message
Virtual Disk Service error:
The volume cannot be extended because the number of clusters will
exceed the maximum number of clusters supported by the file system
Then I realized that the cluster size where only at 8k, reading on the Web i understood that I couldn't get more then 32tb.
Now I would like to remove all of the 14 disk I just added in the pool and create a new pool with 64Ko cluster size so I wont worry about my next size upgrade.
I'm afraid that even if windows see the added space has a not allocated space, the storage pool is now using the disks. I can't afford to lose any data.
How can I proceed??
I saw procedure on this site but they seem's to be for removing 1 disk... since I have 14 disk fully integrated in my pool I am a bit nervous following a one disk procedure

As you have already added the 14 new disks into your existing pool, you will need to check if virtual disk is already extended onto these new physical disks.
If not, you should able to remove them from the pool - if virtual disk is already extended onto these new disks, It will ask for replacement to replace them with new hard disks.
If a part of hard disks could be removed, maybe you can migrate data onto these hard disks (no need to create a storage pool), delete the existing pool to recreate and migrate files back.

First cluster - Server 2012 r2 - storage spaces issues
Hi Everyone
We just purchased two new servers (Lenovo RD640's) and an external SAS JBOD enclosure (the Lenovo SA120), and we would like to set up a 2012 r2 failover cluster with clustered storage spaces as the shared storage. Currently they are
on their own domain with the virtual active directory server residing locally on one of the servers.
Preface: I've created and destroyed the cluster and storage spaces multiple times trying to solve this issue, so I don't know if I may have "leftovers" from those attempts now causing issues for me.
I can create the cluster, and it passes validation, and can create a clustered storage pool, but every time I try to create a virtual disk (either through the Failover cluster manager, the server manager, or powershell), it won't attach. If
I try to manually attach it I get the message: "Error attaching or detaching virtual disk: Failed to attach virtual disk to <node name>. Access denied"
Finally (and I don't know if this is related or not), when in storage spaces on the server manager, there is a gold banner at the top that says "Incomplete communication with cluster <cluster name>. The following cluster nodes or clustered roles
might be offline or have connectivity issues: <cluster name>"
I'm logged in with full domain administrator credentials, and have been running my head against this wall for a few days now. Any help would be appreciated!Thanks for your responses. Here is what I have to report:
When I destroy the cluster, and create the storage spaces on just one of the two servers (with the other server powered down), I'm able to create the storage pool - using all the HDDs and SSDs - and virtual disks (both tiered and non-tiered) without issue.
As soon as I create the cluster again, the virtual disks become "detached", and I'm back to the situation described initially.

Unable to repair degraded Virtual disks in Storage Spaces under Hyper-V 2012 R2 Core
Hi all,
I am finding myself in the following conundrum. I have a storage pool under Hyper-V Core, with 2 2TB Seagate drives.
One of the drives completely died (wouldn't spin up, tried it in a different box, still to no avail). I sent it in to Seagate for warranty replacement, got the new drive. Installed it and went through the notions of adding it to the pool and retiring the
one that was with "Lost Communication" status.
Tried to repair the virtual disks that are showing as "Unhealthy-Detached", quickly get 100% complete, but the repair didnt work.
The storage pool is in degraded state.
Looks like metadata is corrupted.
Followed this post to upgrade Storage Spaces to latest version:

Still, to no avail.
Couple of questions:
1) Is the data on the 3 virtual disks in state "Unhealthy: Detached" not recoverable?
2) How can I get the storage pool back to "healthy"?

Server 2012 RC. I'm using Storage Spaces, with two virtual disks across 23 underlying physical disks.
* First virtual disk is fixed provisioning, parity across 23 physical disks: 10,024GB capacity
* Second virtual disk is fixed provisioning, parity across the remaining space on 6 of the same physical disks: 652GB capacity
These have been configured as dynamic disks, with an NTFS volume spanned across the two (larger virtual disk first). Total volume size 10,676GB. I'm copying several TB from a network share to this volume. It is very slow at ~12MB/sec, but works. However, three times so far, several hours in to the file copy and with plenty of free space remaining, the 10,024GB virtual disk is suddenly taken offline.
This obviously then fails the spanned volume and stops the file copy.
The second time, I took screenshots, below. The disk (Disk27) is marked offline due to "This disk is offline because it is out of capacity". And the disk in the spanned volume is marked as missing (which is what you would expect when one of its member disks
is offline).
I can then mark the disk (Disk27) back online again, and this restores the spanned volume. I can then re-start the file copy from where it failed. There doesn't appear to be any data loss, but it does cause an outage that requires manual attention. As you
can see, there is plenty of space left on the spanned volume.
Each time this has happened, there are a few event 150 errors in the System event log: "Disk 27 has reached a logical block provisioning permanent resource exhaustion condition.". Source: Disk.

This error seems to be related to thin provisioning of disks. I found this:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh848068(v=vs.85).aspx. But both these Virtual Disks are configured as Fixed, not Thin provisioning, so it shouldn't apply.
My thoughts: the virtual disk should not spuriously go offline during a file copy, even if it was out of space. And in any case, there is plenty of free space remaining. Also, I don't understand the reason for why it is marked as offline ("This disk is offline
because it is out of capacity"). Why would a disk go offline because it was out of thin capacity, rather than just returning an "out of disk space" error while keeping it online.Interesting Thread, I've been having the same issue. So my configuration is A VM Running Windows Server 2012 RC with 5 Virtualized Physical drives using a SCSI interface, 2TB in size that make up my storage pool. A Single Thinly provisioned Disk of 18 TB (using 1 disk for parity)
Interestly enough, write speed has not been an issue on this machine (30~70MB/s, up from 256k on the beta)
Of note to me is this error in my event log 13 minutes before the drive disappeared:
"The shadow copies of volume E: were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time.Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied."Source: volsnap, Event ID: 25, Level: Error
followed by:
"The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: E:, DeviceName: \Device\HarddiskVolume17.(The physical resources of this disk have been exhausted.)"Source: Ntfs (Microsoft-Windows-Ntfs), Event ID: 140, Level: Warning
I figure the amount of space available to me before I start encountering physical limits is in the vicinity of about 7TB. It dropped out for the second time at 184 GB.
