Storage space Tering feature

Customer would like to use Storage space tiering feature of Windows Server 2012 R2
However, the server host has a hardware raid card inside it.
Could we still enable Storage space tiering feature in such scenario? Thanks.

Hi Thomashk23,
If you want to enable storage space with other disk not contain RAID disk , I think it is supported .

  • How to configure local disk on OVM Server as storage space to create VMs

    Hello,
We have installed OVM Server 3.1.1 on a machine that has 250 GB of Hard disk space [Single disk].
While installing used an option - Remove all partitions and create a new default partition layout.
Around 4GB has been used and remaining 246 GB is left as free space.
From OVM Manager - the server is discovered but didn't discovered the physical disk [i.e. remaining 246 GB raw disk space].
Can someone help me to understand how to use local disk as storage space for creating and running VM's.
    Thanks
    Srinivas

You can? You've used every conceivable BIOS out there? You must really be full of yourself. There is absolutely no BIOS that I know of that gives this basic function. BIOSs do not "hard partition" anything. A "BIOS" is not made for such things. Do you even know what "BIOS" stands for?
I wonder why there is some many wanting to do this and are having problems.... I mean if it is such a straight forward thing to do..... It must be down right "intuitive".
You maybe speaking of a RAID "BIOS" but you obviously think you're not. Some motherboards have integrated RAID abilities. Intel RST comes to mind... BUT this isn't a feature of a MOTHERBOARD BIOS.
I've got some $50,000 servers that will not break a single hard drive up into multiple logical drives..... Now, I haven't worked on a "Stinkpad" for many years. Don't want to. However, I have never seen one that would do what you're saying you're doing.
You maybe trying to help.... but you're leading people down a wrong path.
Its just as easy to run virtual box and use the virtual box templates for Oracle VM. In fact, its more practical if you want to run Oracle VM on a laptop for testing purposes than blowing everything away and attempting to setup different LUNS on a single hard drive.
    For your review...
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/servers-storage-admin/configure-vm-templates-1656261.html
Although it's more reliable to use a separate location (such as an NFS share) for a storage repository, you can use a local disk of your Oracle VM Server instead, thus taking advantage of the local storage option. Beware, though: Oracle VM Server 3.0 doesn't allow you to utilize the unused space on the physical disk it's installed on. For local storage, you'll need at least one more physical disk. In other words, you'll need a total of two disks at minimum on your Oracle VM Server host if you want to use local storage. In practice, though, local storage is not a primary use case. The major downside to this approach is that local storage, by definition, cannot be shared between different servers.

  • ICloud photo library and iPhone/iPad storage space

    Hi,
I use iCloud photo library beta for some time and it's a great feature for apple product. However, I'm a bit worried about what happend after some time. Now I have 20Gb of storage in iCLoud and 16Gb iPhone 6 and iPad air 2. On both of them is the "optimize iPhone/iPad storage" checked. What will happen after I would put 20Gb of photos to the iCloud and the iPhone and iPad wouldn't have enough storage to handle them (even when the photos are optimize)?
Thanks for any response or a link where it is discussed,
    Jakub

    Hi jakudo,
"optimize iPad/iPhone storage" means that photos don't have to take any storage capacity of your devices, if you are using your devices storage capacity e.g. for other content like music, apps etc. Your photos will be stored in the cloud and only a some of them are stored locally as long as you have storage space available. The only thing you have to do, is upgrading for more storage as soon as your passing the 20 GB.
    With kind regards,
    David

  • IPhone 5s playing video from iCloud takes up all free storage space and phone to crash

    Hello All,
Traded in my 32GB iPhone 5 for a 16GB iPhone 5s today. Using the iPhone's built in "Video" app and streaming videos purchased in iTunes will sometimes cause the phone to freeze and fill of the phone's free space until the indicates free bytes in usage says 0. It seems like it is a software glitch as the phone works perfectly fine everyone else. I'm running iOS 7.0.3. I've also tried restoring the phone, which hasn't help.
Has anyone run into this before or have any suggestions?
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Chris

I've encountered the same issue tonight. Decided to purchase a movie and NOT download it to the iPhone 5S, but instead play it from the Videos app...which supposedly streams it from iCloud.
Half way through the film, a message informs me that I have low storage space. I check storage - 0kb.
I throw away 1.2GB of old apps and various pics / vids in my camera roll, then finish the movie. Just after watching, another message pops up...that 1.2GB was consumed as I watched the rest of the film.
It's almost as if the film was downloaded to the phone...taking up space (what was the point of "streaming" it from iCloud if it was going to take up such a great amount of space on the phone?) But it wasn't in my videos app as downloaded. I was missing 3 - 3.5 GB of space. There was no way to clear the cache. I tried everything (and I used to work for Apple as a highly competent iOS technical support advisor, so I DO mean everything).
In the end I decided to stop fooling with it and just erase the contents of the phone and restore to a backup.
But this is a SERIOUS bug in this system. I know "streaming movies from icloud" was a new feature with iOS 7...I hope they resolve this. Until then, I'll download movies if I want to watch them.

  • Storage Space 2012 R2 CPU / Memory requirement

How much impact would does CPU core density has with Storage Space 2012 R2?  Given the option of dual socket 5500 series quad core vs dual socket 5600 series hex core for a SMB environment (attach up to maximum of 2 x 24 JBOD), would there be any
significant performance improvement?  Dedup feature would be enable, at least on some virtual disk, along with SSD storage tiering.

Try running Performance Monitor on a Scale-Out File Server and you'll see CPU and memory usage (unless CSV cache is enabled) is pretty sparse. Dedupe does not matter at all as optimization process kicks in only when there's no I/O (CPU is not used for anything
    either way).

    Hello
    Steps that i have done
-Boot the machine Win2k12 with ISO created with WinPE5.0
-Create Storage Pool through PowerShell in WinPE5.0
-Then again reboot the machine from WinPE environment and boot into Win2k12
-Storage Pool does not visible in Win2k12 and physical disks which are used in pool are having status as "Unrecognized"
    Is this provided by Microsoft?

  • Storage space readout

    Hello
Since installing Lion I can no longer see the little readout at the bottom of the window
when I select a hard drive telling me how much storage space I have left.
Is there a way to get that back in prefs? Goodness knows why Apple would want
to alter such a handy little feature - seems ridiculous
    Cheers

  • Using new Storage Spaces" re-format

I gave a HP Compaq model # EN330YT#aba which I loaded the consumer edition of win 8, 64Bit.
I added 2 hard drives via SATA ports and successfully used the storage spaces feature to create 1 large storage pool.  This feature worked greats and is easy for even a novice user to use.
However, when i turned the machine off and then back on again, it hung up at the BIOS Post screen and would not go any further.  I could not get into BIOS, Boot Disc utility or any other function at that point.
The only way the machine would come back on was if I disconnected the drives in the pool and then restarted the computer. I had to reformat the drives and make them a dynamic drive again to get the computer to boot back up.  However when i did that, the STORAGE POOL was gone and had to be rebuilt.
The storage pools are a great idea, but if WIN * does not keep the pool information it is useless if it has to be rebuilt each the computer is turned on.
Has any one else ran into this issue????

  • Disk images and storage space.

    Dear members:
After a disk image is created and saved, how much storage space does one need to work with it ?
Let's say I create a 10 GB disk image that is saved in an encrypted form. Once I try to open it I have first to provide a password and then the drive corresponding to this image mounts to the desktop. Once the drive is mounted, since I have the disk image and the drive, does it mean that I actually have 20 GB added to my desktop folder or both files combined still take up only 10 GB of storage space ?
    One other question:
I have saved a disk image to an external Firewire hard disk. When I click on this disk image the drive mounts on the desktop. Is there a way to open this disk image so that the drive is actually mounted on the same external disk where the image is or does it always mount on the desktop independent of where the image is ?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Best regards,
    Joseph Chamberlain

    Hi, Joseph.
    1. You wrote: "In case I wanted to would it be possible to create a disk image on another drive and also mount the disk from this image on that same drive ? For instance, can I create a disk image on an external Firewire drive and then mount the disk from this image on this same external disk ?"I'm not quite sure what you're saying here. I thought I addressed this.
You can create a disk image and save it on an external drive. Double-clicking that disk image (saved on an external drive) will mount it, with the mount point being in /Volumes, same as every other mounted volume on your computer, as discussed in my prior post.
    2. You wrote: "On another discussion I initiated one poster said that when creating a bootable external drive it is important to uncheck the square for "Ignore Ownership". I just installed OS X 10.4 on a LaCie 120 GB external Firewire drive and after the installation process noticed that the "Get Info" panel shows the box "Ignore Ownership" checked. Is there a problem ?"You do not want "Ignore Ownership" checked on a bootable volume, i.e. a volume on which you installed Mac OS X. That installation may not work properly.
    3. You wrote: "In case there is, shouldn't OS X have unchecked this option as it installed itself on this particular drive ?"I don't know. I've never tried installing Mac OS X on an external volume that had "Ignore Ownership" checked before installation.
    4. You wrote: "What does the option "Ignore Ownership" mean and why/when should I use it ?"See "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: I don't have permission to use a disk. The only time I would use this feature is if I had a volume on an external drive, e.g. FireWire drive, that needed to be accessed and written-to by multiple users of the computer to which that external drive was connected. The volume in question should contain only data — not a bootable volume, i.e. one with Mac OS X installed — and one should also be prepared that anyone could add, delete, or modify files on that volume since permissions are ignored when "Ignore Ownership" is enabled.

  • VMware and Windows Server Storage Space

We know Windows Storage Server could be storage of VMware.
Could VMware also adopt Storage Space feature when using Windows Storage Server?

    Hi,
I'm a little unclear about the question.
Do you mean you are going to install a VM in VMware as Windows Storage Server and setup Storage Space on it?
I cannot confirm if there is any specific limitation of VMware but personally I think it will work. In Hyper-V it is supported.

  • Can I migrate physical hard disks in storage space from Windows 2012 R2 to Windows 2012?

    Hi,
We have a Windows 2012 R2 server.  It's running storage space with 10 hard disk in Parity mode.  We would like to move the hard disks from Windows 2012 R2 server to Windows 2012, so that we can "free" our windows
2012 R2 server to do something else.   Can we just unplug the hard disks in Windows 2012 R2 and hook it to Windows 2012 server without any data lose?  If we can do it, what's best "formal" procedures to do it?
    Thanks,
    Tak

    Hi Tak,
Storage space will be recognized in different servers (and even clients) which support.
If it is just a "Parity mode", you can turn off the computer, unplug and connect these disks to the new server directly.
If any Windows Server 2012 R2 new feature is involved, it may not work in Windows Server 2012 but it should not damage your data and you can still connect these hard disks back to original server.
However, backup important files is always recommended.

  • IPod Touch with iPod Classic storage space, anyone?

On my Christmas list is a iPod with the storage space of a classic and the features of a iPod touch.  No apps just a 160GB iPod that will hold my music but make it easy to find and do all those cool things a iPod touch does for your music.  Could I be the only one?

The largest iPod touch Apple makes is 64 GB. I would not expect a larger one any time soon.

  • Storage Spaces - Replacing a disk...how?

I have created a 3 disk pool, and I want to swap out one of the disks for a larger one, but see no obvious way to do this... other than of course moving ALL of the data to a non pooled disk, and removing and recreating the pool.. but this seems almost ridiculous.
So what is the solution??  My pc is limited to 4 disks, so when I outgrow, I need to replace a disk with a larger one...  Why cant I simply move the data stored on a particular disk, replace it, then move it back?  Voila!
This was perhaps one of the main features I was looking forward to, and now it seems fundamentally flawed!
Interesting read.. but ultimately, very disappointing...

Windows devs really need to think things through a bit more!
    DrSoton

Even if this is by design, it can certainly be improved.
A typical SOHO use case is a drive enclosure with four drive slots.
The desirable workflow for extending capacity when exhausted would be
Temporarily add an external USB drive to the pool
Retire the smallest drive (which would move data to other drives)
    Remove the smallest drive
    Add a large drive
    Retire the temporary external drive.
It's possible to do this with a Mirror space (but a bit tricky to figure out how). For Simple it's not possible, not sure about Parity.
I know you guys are tired of hearing of Drive Extender, but this is the silver bullet SOHO use case for DE. It's no big deal for SMB where you presumably can easily extend the number of drive slots in your server room.

  • Storage spaces can only use whole drives

One of the features that I was really interested in with WS2012E is storage spaces as it replaces the old driver extender of WHS v1. Having now installed WS2012E onto my WHS2011 box I am bit staggered to find that it can only use whole drives. My box came
with 2 * 2Tb drives, the first partitioned as boot, then a 60G of OS followed by the rest allocated as storage. I have successfully created a Storage space pool of the second drive but cannot find any way to add the remaining storage from the large partition
on the other drive into the pool. As the UI just shows me drives rather than partitions, I am bit challenged. I thought that storage spaces was meant to be flexible about adding drives just like the old drive extender. Even add on technolgies like DriveBender
for WHS2011 allows for a storage space to be made up from this type of set up. So we seem to be going backwards.
Plus when creating the drive pool it defaulted on a 2Tb drive to a 2Gb size! How useful is that? As soon as I started copying data to the drive it ran out of space. I then had to go in and expand it.

I note that you did this with Windows Server 2012 Essentials.  I cannot seem to do this with Windows 2012 Standard.  I have two 500 GB disks and 40GB of the first disk, PhysicalDisk0 is partitioned for the OS.  Nothing I do makes PhysicalDisk0
show up in the Storage Pool area of Server Manager - all I can see is PhysicalDisk1.  (Refer to 'Physical Disks' in the bottom right corner of the previous poster's first screen shot above.  I can only see 'PhysicalDisk1', not 'PhysicalDisk0'.)  If
I click 'Disks' just under 'Volumes' in the same screenshot above, I can see PhysicalDisk0, and it shows 466 GB capacity, 423 GB unallocated.  PhysicalDisk1 shows 466 GB capacity, 466 GB unallocated.  My intent was to mirror the remaining 423 GB
on PhysicalDisk0 with 423 GB on PhysicalDisk1.  I would then allocate the leftover 43 GB on PhysicalDisk1 as a 'scratch' disk.  I have tried leaving everything unallocated and have tried all variations of creating volumes and virtual disks, but nothing
I do makes a difference.  I found other threads related to this issue which indicated there was a flaw in the 2012 GUI and that this process could be done via Powershell.  However, there seems to be a mix of Windows 8 and Windows 2012 in these threads
and, apparently the Powershell commands I've found apply to 8 and not 2012, as I get invalid command errors when I try to use them.
Can anybody tell me how to mirror the unallocated portion of the primary disk PhysicalDisk0 (which has a partition for the OS) with a same-sized portion of PhysicalDisk1 with Windows Server 2012?  Thanks!

  • How do I free up storage space on a Macbook air?

How do I free up storage space on a Macbook air?   My e-mail seems to be taking up the most space?

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Restart and it should go away.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.
