Storage Spaces - Replacing a disk...how?

I have created a 3 disk pool, and I want to swap out one of the disks for a larger one, but see no obvious way to do this... other than of course moving ALL of the data to a non pooled disk, and removing and recreating the pool.. but this seems almost ridiculous.
So what is the solution??  My pc is limited to 4 disks, so when I outgrow, I need to replace a disk with a larger one...  Why cant I simply move the data stored on a particular disk, replace it, then move it back?  Voila!
This was perhaps one of the main features I was looking forward to, and now it seems fundamentally flawed!
Interesting read.. but ultimately, very disappointing...

Windows devs really need to think things through a bit more!
DrSoton

Even if this is by design, it can certainly be improved.
A typical SOHO use case is a drive enclosure with four drive slots.
The desirable workflow for extending capacity when exhausted would be
Temporarily add an external USB drive to the pool
Retire the smallest drive (which would move data to other drives)
Remove the smallest drive
Add a large drive
Retire the temporary external drive.
It's possible to do this with a Mirror space (but a bit tricky to figure out how). For Simple it's not possible, not sure about Parity.
I know you guys are tired of hearing of Drive Extender, but this is the silver bullet SOHO use case for DE. It's no big deal for SMB where you presumably can easily extend the number of drive slots in your server room.

HHey GB, thanks, this was of great help and should, if you are correct, solve the problem quickly.
if I am unable to buy 'Hanna' then I am better to use the money (and that for the apparently totally useless iCloud storage!) on my much-needed medications (I am on Disability) OxyContin and Heroin Hydrochloride tablets From my UK pharmacy. Oh, and Gador Alplax bars from Argentina (we only get Xanax brand here and it is the most expensive in the world, and can only be bought in tiny 0.5mg dose meaning I need twelve tablets daily rather than only THREE of the 2mg Alplax 'bars').

  • Storage Spaces - Remove Physical Disk from Simple layout

I am running Server 2012 RTM with a single storage pool containing 4 drives - 2.73TB, 1.36TB, 465GB and 148GB. There is a single virtual disk created, with thin provisioning, using the Simple layout, with a current maximum size of 2.73TB, and with 1.32TB
allocated. I want to remove the 148GB drive and replace it with a 465GB drive. When I right-click the 148GB disk and select Remove, I get a warning that Windows will attempt to rebuild any virtual disks that store data on the disk I'm trying to remove, and
that in order to succeed, the storage pool must have enough free space to accommodate the data from the disk I'm trying to remove. There is more than enough space in the virtual disk to accommodate whatever files may be stored on the 148GB disk - over 1TB
unallocated. However, when I confirm that I want to remove the disk from the pool, I get the following message:
This physical disk is used by one or more virtual disks that use the Simple (no resiliency) layout. To remove this physical disk, delete the following virtual disks: Simple
Surely the fact that it's a simple volume (rather than mirrored/parity) shouldn't affect the ability to move the data off the disk? It appears that disk removal is implemented as a simulated drive failure, forcing a rebuild of the resiliency data, rather
than by simply moving the data off the disk onto other available disks.
Additionally, after I've attempted to remove the disk, it's now been marked as 'Retired'.
Is there any simple way to remove this disk?

Same problem here, but I have some workaround for the problem.
But, even in Windows Home Server with its awesome disk extender (predecessor of Storage Spaces) you had to take the shares (meaning volumes in our case) offline so you could take out the disk from the pool.
Agree that it would make more sense to be able to remove disk from the pool online and the technology is most likely is already there: online cluster moves with defragmentation API was there for years and ReFS moves clusters online when it detects disk errors.
Anyway here is the process that may work for you if taking volume offline is an option in your case:
Try to remove physical disk in Server Manager - it will fail with abovementioned error, but the disk will go into "Retired" state.
Now provision a new Virtual Disk and a volume of your choice. Most likely you will pick the same disk and volume type as you already had, but this is the chance to change the topology. You should be able to do this since you have a lot of physical disk
space, especially if you used Thin provisioning.
It looks like at this point retired physical disk is not included into the new Virtual Disk provisioning, but it is still accessible via existing virtual disk.
Copy over all files from your old volume to a new volume.
    Now delete old Virtual Disk.
If you want - change disk name and volume letter of new virtual disk that you created and new volume to what you had before.
Now in Disk Manager take failing physical disk offline.
Replace failing disk, initialize new disk and add it to the pool.
Note: for me sometimes removing disk in via Storage Pool management GUI does not mark it as "Retired". In this case you can open PowerShell as Admin and assuming you want to remove PhysicalDisk2 - run the following command:
    Set-PhysicalDisk -FriendlyName PhysicalDisk2 -Usage Retired

  • Storage Spaces UI missing disks when a controller reports the same UniqueID for all attached disks (e.g. Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8)

Summary: The Storage Spaces UI has several problems when there are more than 21 physical disks available to Storage Spaces.
I have 28 SATA disks connected over 6 controllers. 2 are used for an Intel motherboard RAID1 for OS (PhysicalDisk0), so that leaves 26 data disks for Storage Spaces. [The plan is to get to 36 data disks in due course by adding disks (this 36-bay chassis: http://www.supermicro.com/products/chassis/4U/847/SC847A-R1400LP.cfm)]
Initially, there were 23 data disks (5x 1TB, 1x 640GB, 14x 500GB, 3x 250GB) as PhysicalDisk1-23 (in that order), which I put into a storage pool. I created a parity disk over all 23 disks. It looks like it is working fine, albeit very slowly on writes.
I've now added 3 more 4TB disks, as PhysicalDisk24-26, and taken them offline, and have now noticed errors in the Storage Pools UI in the Server Manager. For example:
    * No more than 21 disks ever show up in the "Physical Disks" area in the lower right. When the 23 disks are connected, only the first 21 show up in the pool I created. With 26 disks connected, only the first 20 show up in the pool, and only 1 more of the
new 3 (PhysicalDisk26) shows up in the Primordial group.
    * In the Properties of the parity Virtual Disk created over the 23 disks, the disks are shown incorrectly. Again, only 21 disks are shown, and PhysicalDisk26 is incorrectly shown as part of the virtual disk. See image:
    * Using the New Storage Pool Wizard, I cannot add more than 1 of the new 3 disks to a new Storage Pool (only PhysicalDisk26 is available). And the details incorrectly refer to PhysicalDisk21. See image (a WDC WD2500JD-22H is a 250GB disk, not a 4TB disk).
Thus I cannot use the new disks in a new storage pool.
According the blog post at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/01/05/virtualizing-storage-for-scale-resiliency-and-efficiency.aspx:
    Q) What is the minimum number of disks I can use to create a pool? What is the maximum?
You can create a pool with only one disk. However, such a pool cannot contain any resilient spaces (i.e. mirrored or parity spaces). It can only contain a simple space which does not provide resiliency to failures. We do test pools comprising multiple hundreds
of disks – such as you might see in a datacenter. There is no architectural limit to the number of disks comprising a pool.
However, the UI currently does not seem to correctly work with more than 21 physical disks. Please advise.
    Using Server 2012 RC.
    Hardware: Supermicro X8SAX (BIOS v2.0), Intel i7-920 2.67GHz, 6x 2GB DDR3-1333 (certified Crucial CT25664BA1339.16SFD)
Disk controllers: 2x RAIDCore BC4852 (PCI-X, final 3.3.1 driver) (15 ports used), 2x Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 (PCIe, 4.0.0.1200 Marvell driver to allow >2TB disks) (6 ports used), Sil 3114 (PCI, latest 1.5.20.3 driver) (1 port used), motherboard Intel
in RAID mode (4 ports used for data, plus 2 for OS RAID1).

An update. I added 16x SATA disks across 2x Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8. All 16 disks report the same UniqueID.
I have 25 disks in the pool now (23 as parity; 2 as journal added via PowerShell). 10 of these are on the two AOC-SASLP-MV8 controllers. Only the first 16 disks show up in the UI, so 9 are missing from the UI - which is consistent with this UI bug where
only one disk per UniqueID shows up. PowerShell does work to manage the SS.

I am trying to burn a dvd and it will not allow me to do this because it states I do not have enough space for encoding. how do i free up space and from where?

iDVD can only use your startup hard disk for the "scratch space" it needs for calculations during the encoding process.  25 GB is a good average requirement, but a large project (3 or 4 hours of content) might require more.
To free up space, you will have to move items to an external hard drive and/or delete items you no longer want.
Please note that iDVD can't use and external hard drive for this "scratch space".

  • Repair-VirtualDisk on Storage Spaces simple volume with retired disk?

    Hello,
Does anyone know if it's possible to retire a disk from a Storage Space simple volume, and use the Repair-VirtualDisk commandlet to migrate any data off the retired volume? It sounds like this is how it would work for a parity volume, but it's unclear if
Windows will try to move data off a retired disk of a simple volume. Or is repair actually performing parity recovery?
i.e. I want to replace disks in a simple volume with larger disks, and remove the old disks, is creating a new volume and migrating data the only way?
    Thank you!

    Hi,
Simple spaces are not resilient to disk failures, so we cannot add a new physical disk to replace the failed physical disk.
If you have backed up the files in that virtual disk, you could delete the disk then remove physical disks from the pool.
For more detailed information, please see:

  • Not enough temporary storage space on disk

I'm new to Access.  I've imported some tables from a co-worker, who cannot help troubleshoot this issue.
When I run a query, I get the error "Query cannot be completed.  Either the size of the query result is larger than the maximum size of the database or there is not enough temporary storage space on the disk to store the completed result."
    I've compacted the database.
I've searched online about how to increase the storage space on the disk.
    Unsure what to do next

    Hi,
Which Access version do you use? The issue might be related to some reasons.
    1. Access database has its max size (2GB). While running a query it often needs temporary storage. It means that the normal size plus the temp size hits the 2GB file size limit of Access.
    2. Caused by the query, any non-trivial query or operation can use a larger amount of temporary space.
    3. Caused by the database, the column name in database is not the same of the output in the transformation.
    Thus, we may try:
     1. Using SQL Server 2008 Express as back-end database
     2. Splitting your database into front-end and back-end - due to the size eventually multiple back-end files- and using linked tables.

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

    Hi,
While running a Bex query, i goth the following message and the query run was terminated "No roll storage space of length 96 available for OCCURS area".Can you please let me know what this roll storage space referes to and how this can be corrected?
Also I get some other space related issues like "Client Out of memory" sometimes and the query execution is terminated.
Is there any OSS notes detailing these issues(I was searching the OSS, but all my search terms didn't pick up a relavent match)
    Thanks

  • DPM Storage Pool on Windows Server 2012R2 iSCSI target Storage Spaces - supported?

    Hi,
for migration purpose we need more space for one of our DPM 2012R2 Servers.
And we cannot buy more space for our NetAPPs..
So our idea was to use an Windows Server 2012R2 as an iSCSI target and use Storage Spaces.
I remember something that using an iSCSI target on Windows 2008 was not supported.
Is this configuration supported when usinf DPM 2012R2 on Win 2012R2 and the target is Win2012R2 aswell?
    Thanks in advance
    regards

    Hi,
    This talks about
Virtual DPM servers, but the same is true for Physical DPM servers when it comes to using .VHD(x) files for DPM storage pool.
Virtual DPM installations do not support the following:
    Windows 2012 Storage Spaces.
Virtual hard drives built on top of storage spaces.
Local or remote hosting of VHDX files on Windows 2012 storage spaces.
Enabling Disk Dedupe on volumes hosting virtual hard drives.
Using synthetic FC to connect to tape drives.
Windows 2012 iSCSI targets (which use virtual hard drives) as a DPM storage pool.
NTFS compression for volumes hosting VHD files used in the DPM storage pool.
Bitlocker on volumes hosting VHD files used for the storage pool.
A native 4K sector size of physical disks for VHDX files in the DPM storage pool.
Virtual hard drives hosted on Windows 2008 servers.

  • How to replace a disk within a parity space

I have been searching the net for better documentation on this, but so far not a lot of information on what happens when I want to do the following (this is for home use - I am not a storage admin):
I had a JBOD array with 8 disks in it.  3x3TB and 5x2TB.  I had this array thin provisioned to 45 TiB.  When I hit about 13 TiB of storage, the drive stopped accepting new data and it was time to expand.  This made sense to me as I had
about 19 TB or 17.3 TiB of room, minus parity, I'm about there.  Perhaps I could have done more to maximize usage, but that point is moot now.  What I did was buy and add a new 4TB disk to the array.
I had a Storage Pool containing all my disks, and I added this new 4TB disk to the pool.  I had a Virtual Disk sitting on that pool in Single Parity mode.  After adding the drive, I was unable to get the existing virtual disk to use that drive.
I imagine this was due to the number of columns previously allocated to the array.  I had some ideas on how to offload the data into a new Virtual Disk with more columns, but nothing really worked, so I bought 3 more 4TB disks, reduced my data footprint
to 12TB, copied everything off, and destroyed the array.
Next I re-built my media server and put the original 8 disks in place, along with the fourth new 4TB disk, as well as a 200 GB disk, a 600 GB disk, and a 1.5 TB disk that I had laying around.  I'm in day 2 of my copy operation from BackupDrive1
to the new 12 disk array.  When that completes, I want to use that disk to replace the 200 GB disk I was using as a placeholder.
Everything I read on the internet has been inconclusive to me thus far.  Microsoft's own documentation claims that replacing a disk is as simple as removing the old disk and adding the new one, but I don't think it is.  When I tested this
using the 4TB disk and the other 3 oddballs with a smaller subset of data, it definitely wasn't as easy as that.
My intuition tells me that what I am supposed to do is power down the server and replace the disk I intend to replace, then add that disk to the now degraded storage pool.  At that point I should remove the old drive from the pool and repair the virtual
disk.  However, I am nervous that "removing" a drive will decrease the number of columns, and that in the end I won't be able to use the space from the 4TB drive.  I've seen questions on the net on how to replace a disk and none of them
seem to specifically apply to parity spaces, most are talking about either simple spaces (not happening) and mirror spaces.  I understand the difference but Microsoft's implementation of this is not as straightforward as other products I have used.
In other cases it was as simple as this: Physically replace disk, receive prompt that your old disk is missing, but you have a new disk, and would you like to rebuild the data from the old disk on the new disk?  Yes?  Then wait patiently while
we painfully write 4TB of 1's and 0's and you're good to go.  I want this button in Storage Spaces please.

    Shaon,
Thanks for your reply.  However, this does not sufficiently answer my question.
The 200GB, 600 GB and 1.5 TB drives are temporary drives, since from my experience, adding drives to an array with 8 or more drives does not work.  I want to replace these drives with 4TB drives, leaving the smallest drive at 2TB.
Also, I was under the assumption that parity (which I'm imagining works in storage spaces somewhat like RAID 50), claims a space for parity equal to the size of the largest drive in the bunch, not the smallest, leaving me with a total space equal to the sum
    of the drives minus 4TB.
I have experimented with the suggested workflow, but through the GUI this does not work.  I add the new drive, remove the missing one, and get a popup explaining that my virtual disk will be "In Repair".  However, this popup vanishes before I can
click OK (almost certainly a Microsoft bug).  If I click OK before I finish reading this, nothing happens.  The drive doesn't repair.  I need to retire the disk through PowerShell, and then use PowerShell to repair the virtual disk.  This
works out OK for a while, but once I start using it, the new drive infallibly gives me an error of "Stale Metadata".  I have tried this with 3 different 4TB drives, so I have doubts that this is actually a hardware issue with the drives.  More than
likely, this is a false positive caused by an issue with Storage Spaces.  It does give me pause on continuing to use the disk, so I end up swapping the old 200GB disk back in every time and the space works fine at that point.  Right now I am attempting
to replace the 1.5 TB disk instead, to see if that does anything.  After that, I plan on running the Optimize-Volume -DriveLetter D -Analyze -Verbose cmdlet to attempt to rebalance the data on the disk.  Should I expect that command to do anything
    useful?
Just a side comment, this product has been around for a solid 2 years now.  I've found the documentation to be almost non-existent, with the exception of one TechNet page that every question seems to have a link to in the answer.  This page helps
almost no-one as it lacks in examples that apply to the questions that are asked.  It gives little information on parity spaces, and does not equivocally answer the one question that many parity space users have, "What is the correct workflow for growing
my pool?"  I understand that in a mirrored situation, you can't grow the pool without adding a certain amount of disks, but if parity functions anything like RAID 50, this should not be a limitation.  It amazes me that this is the only document Microsoft
seems to have regarding Storage Spaces, and this single document has seemingly never been updated.  Take this feedback however you will, I truly hope that more discussion will reach the right people and help Microsoft fix the issues with a product that
actually has a lot of promise.

  • How to configure local disk on OVM Server as storage space to create VMs

    Hello,
We have installed OVM Server 3.1.1 on a machine that has 250 GB of Hard disk space [Single disk].
While installing used an option - Remove all partitions and create a new default partition layout.
Around 4GB has been used and remaining 246 GB is left as free space.
From OVM Manager - the server is discovered but didn't discovered the physical disk [i.e. remaining 246 GB raw disk space].
Can someone help me to understand how to use local disk as storage space for creating and running VM's.
    Thanks
    Srinivas

You can? You've used every conceivable BIOS out there? You must really be full of yourself. There is absolutely no BIOS that I know of that gives this basic function. BIOSs do not "hard partition" anything. A "BIOS" is not made for such things. Do you even know what "BIOS" stands for?
I wonder why there is some many wanting to do this and are having problems.... I mean if it is such a straight forward thing to do..... It must be down right "intuitive".
You maybe speaking of a RAID "BIOS" but you obviously think you're not. Some motherboards have integrated RAID abilities. Intel RST comes to mind... BUT this isn't a feature of a MOTHERBOARD BIOS.
I've got some $50,000 servers that will not break a single hard drive up into multiple logical drives..... Now, I haven't worked on a "Stinkpad" for many years. Don't want to. However, I have never seen one that would do what you're saying you're doing.
You maybe trying to help.... but you're leading people down a wrong path.
Its just as easy to run virtual box and use the virtual box templates for Oracle VM. In fact, its more practical if you want to run Oracle VM on a laptop for testing purposes than blowing everything away and attempting to setup different LUNS on a single hard drive.
    For your review...
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/servers-storage-admin/configure-vm-templates-1656261.html
Although it's more reliable to use a separate location (such as an NFS share) for a storage repository, you can use a local disk of your Oracle VM Server instead, thus taking advantage of the local storage option. Beware, though: Oracle VM Server 3.0 doesn't allow you to utilize the unused space on the physical disk it's installed on. For local storage, you'll need at least one more physical disk. In other words, you'll need a total of two disks at minimum on your Oracle VM Server host if you want to use local storage. In practice, though, local storage is not a primary use case. The major downside to this approach is that local storage, by definition, cannot be shared between different servers.

  • Replacing a failed disk in storage space ! unable to remove a retired disk

    Hi Folks
Not really asking for much !! we are using windows 2012 R2 storage space ; one disk failed
    and marked as retired.
today we received replacement disk ; added that to storage pool - fine.
then I repaired all Virtual Disk - process was very quick and went to 100% like a flash.
then I tried to remove faulty disk by using following commands :
    $DeadDisk=Get-PhysicalDisk -FriendlyName PhysicalDisk-1
    FriendlyName        CanPool             OperationalStatus   HealthStatus        Usage
     Size
PhysicalDisk-1      False               Lost Communication  Warning             Retired                        185.5
    GB
    Remove-PhysicalDisk -PhysicalDisks $deaddisk -StoragePoolFriendlyName storagePool
this errored out ; basically saying that the above disk is still in-use !
Any suggestions ? does repair job take some time ? it looked very fast ; when I did get-storagejob ; it showed 100 percent completed .

    Hi,
Please reboot the server then set the failed disk to "Retired" and remove the retired physical disk.
You could refer to the thread below to troubleshoot the issue:
