Storage Spaces - unmark hard drive as "retired" after SATA controller failure

Hello,
I am having a problem with Storage Spaces - it won't start recovering the mirror set.
The mirror set got degraded because one of SATA ports on the controller went bad (I/O errors with any hard drive on that port).
After the hard drive is reconnected to another port, Storage Spaces still shows the drive as 'Retired'.
I can unmark the disk by running Set-PhysicalDisk -UniqueID id -Usage AutoSelect
Then, I can access a Simple (non-mirrored) thin-provisioned virtual disk located on that physical disk, and there are no I/O errors in Event Log, or any other errors.
But after I attempt to initiate Mirror set repair (Repair-VirtualDisk -FriendlyName mirror), the physical disk becomes 'Retired' again, although no I/O errors have occured.
Seems that somewhere in the metadata there is incorrect information about actual disk health state, and I need a way to reset it.
Thank you.

Thank you for reply.
Figured out a workaround which solved the problem, however, it is somewhat crude (use at your own risk!):
1. If there are any non-redundant (simple) virtual disks in the storage pool, back up the data somewhere (they have to be deleted and recreated from scratch)
2. Disable the spaceport driver (sc config spaceport start= disabled), so you can see the hidden GPT partitions of type 'e75caf8f-f680-4cee-afa3-b001e56efc2d'.
3. Reboot.
4. Wipe the affected physical hard disk using diskpart (use
clean command)
5. Enable the spaceport driver (sc config spaceport start= boot) and reboot
6. Now you can add the affected hard disk yet again
7. At this point - the affected hard disk is listed twice - one in the 'Retired' state, the other is 'Healthy'.
8. Initiate the repair of the affected mirror virtual disks, and wait for completion
9. Now you can delete the 'Retired' disk.
All that said, it would be great to have an option to un-retire a hard disk in place, without going through all that hassle.
Set-PhysicalDisk -UniqueID id -Usage AutoSelect does not really work (the disk becomes Retired again when starting repair).
Remove-PhysicalDisk also fails with 'Not supported' error (unless you do the above workaround).
Thank you.

Trying to upgrade iPad software to newest version. It downloads but stops while backing up and says not enough space on hard drive to back up if i continue all media on iPad will be lostor deleted.  Can I get it back after upgrade by just synching or can I set it to backup to an external drive?  Thanks for any help.  I only use the laptop for itunes now as it has such little space left.

I would recommend deleting contents off your hard-drive to make space (how much is left..you should be having 15% free as a general practice) and backing up the phone prior to upgrading.

  • Hard drive is corrupt after i repair it

My hard drive reads corrupt after I repair it.  I restart it, hit C, and open it with a startup disk, then repair and restart it.  After a while, when I verify my disk, it says that is corrupt, AGAIN!!
    Please help
I'm running a mac pro dual core 2 2.66 intel xeon processor, with 16GB of memory  My operating system is  10.6,8

So you should have already made a couple backups, always have a spare bootable system drive, and in some cases zero it all - takes couple hours, and not use it except as spare extra backup.
Getting files off your drive now but don't use it,, install OS to a new drive (pull the old one in fact temporary) and you may want to use checksum on all file copies, and for any files not on backup sets try best you can and if you still need help, then turn to Data Rescue 3.
I would not use a DVD to do repairs, even if it is 10.6.0 or 10.6.3. I would use a clean small system drive with 10.6.8 (takes less than 30GB, even down to 16GB if careful) "emergency boot drive" used only for system maintenance and repairs.
And if you had Lion, you don't, but, I would use Recovery Mode AND have that also cloned to another drive, using Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC).

My win8 pc hard drive failed.  After the hard drive was replaced, I copied iTunes Media backupfiles from external hard drive (Karen's Replicator backup software was used).  ITunes does not recognize these back up files even though the location is the same as cloud & recently burned music that does show- help!  The backup files consist of 34,000+ songs; almost all burned from my own CD collection.  I do have most of the songs on an ipod classic but hesitate to try to restore from that.  Can someone tell me how to get these 34,000 songs to show up in iTunes?  Thanks!!

This diagram shows how a typical iTunes library ought to be set out (click on it to enlarge)
The red outline highlights the media folder and its contents, the various subfolders are only created if that kind of content is in your library. The right-hand side shows the files that should be found in the iTunes library folder; sentinel is normally hidden so may not be visible. The core of your iTunes library is the file iTunes Library.itl, you need to restore this, the other library files and the Album Artwork folder, as well as the media folder, to restore your library.

i just had a new hard drive installed. After loading everything back on my computer from external drive, i came to the "select wireless network screen. I've misplaced the WEP password for my internet. Is there anyway to find it on another computer?

Maybe. What kind of other computer are you talking about? What operating system is it running? What kind of wireless router are you using?
Your best bet may be to just reset the router and set it up again.
Just so you know, WEP is a very old security system for wireless and is considered insecure. If you have it available, use WPA2.

  • How do I get Finder windows to display free space on hard drive?

In Snow Leopard if you opened a Finder window, at the bottom it would show how much free space your hard drive had left.  Lion by default does not do this.  Is there a way where I can turn that option on so i can view space availible when opening Finder windows?

Stop blaming yourself. You're not an idiot and it's never the user's fault. It's always the designer's fault. Read "The Design of Everyday Things' by Donald Norman. It's a gerat book about how everyday things can be just difficult to use. He's been also a former Apple employee. Great reading!

  • Hard drive stop spinning after a while

I have a Lenovo laptop, running Arch Linux + KDE. I noticed that when I am on battery, the hard drive stop spinning after a while, and it's very annoying to listen the disk starting again, and again. and again. I'm not interested in save energy with this, so how can I deactivate it?
I thought it was the laptop-mode, but I runned a systemctl status laptop-mode.service, and the service is inactive. Any idea of what could be triggering this?

man hdparm. Check out -B and -S flags. hdparm -B255 -S0 /dev/your_drive should disable any powersaving settings altogether.
You could use udev rule to run hdparm when you swithch to battery, but there are probably more elegant solutions as well.
KDE might handle this via its own power settings as well. I haven't really used KDE ever, so I'm not sure about this, but it's still possible.

  • Usb hard drive not loading after security update

usb hard drive not loading after security update
I can't seem to find any other posts about this problem.
I have three external hard rives connect by a USB hub to my iMac.
Problem is that if I turn on the hard drive(s) AFTER start up I get a message that the drive either was not recognized by the OS or that it was ejected unexpectedly.
I get the same issue but not all the time if I turn them on before I boot the iMac.
I used the disk drive utility to "repair" the drives but they always come back as "probably ok".
If I restart the iMac with the drives connected (on), it seems to work but not all the time.
A bit annoying as I am wondering if the drives are OK or not.
I don't always need the drives as they are for backing up images from my camera using Apreture.
This all began after i did the latest security update.
    is the update to blame?
    mahalo.

Yes, you can still use those instructions to reset the PRAM.
You said that you booted to your install disk and that your primary drive did not show up at the Select a Destination screen? That usually means that the computer is either not recognizing your partition, or it's not recognizing the hard drive itself.
Start with this article and follow all the steps even if you already tried them. I suspect that you'll get to step 4 and you'll end up having to call Applecare. If you haven't done those steps, they're most likely going to make you do them anyway, so you might as well get them done before the call.

HELP! In attempt clearing space on hard drive, user called 'wheel' got deleted.I'm told it's important, how do I return this user  called 'wheel',on hard drive. On my MacBook air 11(Late).

    Back up all data.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • Hard-Drive not Detected load sata drivers

Hi everyone I have a G6-1189sa notebook, I had a faulty harddrive so replaced it with the exact same drive 750GB WD, Thing is I could not save anything from the original drive ? so no recovery partitions are anything I even lost all my family photos and software.
Ok so I done a straight swap over and went ahead installing my fresh Windows 7 x64 disk, then I got an error message saying no device detected please install driver etc etc.
I know I need to install the sata driver for the harddrive to be detected, so I extracted the HP sata control driver to a USB pen the tried to load the driver, with the load driver option on the install disk.
Error message saying driver is not signed !!!!   So after some reading on google I learned I had to disable the naitive sata option in the bios settings for the harddrive to be detected.
Thing is there is not a option for this in my bios ?  unless Im missing something like an advanced bios setting.
I even went to the Intel site and tried some of there drivers but I get the same error message driver not signed.
So my question is ? how can I disable the native sata option if Its possible , If not how can I load the HP sata driver if its not signed.
Its very anyoing someone even said I have to slip the drivers in and make a new home made W7 disk myself to get my pc working again what the hell, where would I start.
Maybe I should put the laptop in the post and send it back, Ive never had so much trouble before making simple memory and harddrive exchanges.
Any advice please people Im at my wits end, my laptop is only a few month old and its now a door stopper lol

    Hi,
Boot into the bios and be sure that the hard drive is detected.
Sata drivers are included in Windows 7.
Return the bios to its default settings and use the HP Recovery Disks.  If you don't have the Recovery Disks then order them from HP. Order HP recovery Disks.

  • Clean space in hard drive does not work & storage ammount changes

Hi. I am running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50d). I got the message that my Start Disk is full. I have deleted almost 7G and I have cleaned the trash. But the storage says that I have just 600 Mg free and sometimes says even 30 Mg, now says 67 Mg ¿?¿?...
I am not able to make software update.
Any ideas of what is happening.
Mail seems to work strange too. When I delete some files they actually stay there.
    Thank you!

From what I have read about the usb installer, it is not intended for you to try booting from the stick after wiping your hard drive. You are to click on the installer
You may be correct, but this statement is quite confusing in that context:
    Important Note
When you install OS X Lion using the USB thumb drive, you will not be able to reinstall OS X Lion from Lion Recovery. You will need to use the USB thumb drive to reinstall OS X Lion.
So, if the Thumb drive is supposed to take the part of the Recovery partition, it seems that it should be able to boot. However, the license agreement still requires an Apple computer running Snow Leopard, so maybe it isn't bootable.

  • Unable to free space on hard drive

I have been unable to free up space on my startup disk. I deleted several GB of movies and they did not go to the trash bin so I assumed they were deleted. However, when I monitored the storage on the System Information panel, before and after deleting this movies I observed negligible change in storage space.
    Some other info:
    1. External Hard Drive was used with time machine before but time machine turned off and external hard drive removed
    2. trash emptied
    3. Restarted computer
    4. Drive verified in disk utility

  • Free space on hard drive--incorrect reading?

I have a Powerbook G4 with a 100GB hard drive. For almost a year, I've had about 60GB used and about 40GB free. All of a sudden, My free space dropped to 12.4GB.
It seemed odd, so I decided to add up the folder sizes using right click, Get Info on all visible folders on my hard drive. According to my calculations, I should only be using about 30GB. This made no sense, so I'm thinking there are some hidden folders I wasn't adding up.
Next, I downloaded Whatsize, which calculated my total usage at around 27GB. Even stranger but it did corroborate my rough estimate.
I'm trying to determine why the bottom of my Finder windows say that I only have 12.4GB free when I should have a lot more than that.
    I emptied that trash!
One more thing. I recently bought a Maxtor networked storage device and I backed up my entire hard drive onto it. I also bought a second iPod Nano.
Can anyone tell me what is going on?
    Thanks

More like 5 GB free; you can improve matters somewhat by using the Installer's advanced options to install only the language(s) you actually use. Keep in mind that after updating, you still want to keep several GB free space on the HD to permit creation of the temporary disc files used in CD and DVD burning.

  • Unable to create partition from free space on hard drive

I have a segment of free space on my Macbook Air's hard drive. It was formerly a Bootcamp partition.
When I try to create a new partition from this free space in Disk Utility, it prompts me to start creating the partition, but nothing happens after that. I can leave the machine alone for hours, and nothing has occurred. Disk Utility thinks it's working though, since it prompts me to cancel the process when exiting the app.
Any thoughts on how to fix this? Thanks!
