Storage statistics / Disk usage shows wrong info

Hi all!
I've found a very strange bug in OS X Yosemite. The info about storage statistics shown in About my Mac dialog is wrong:
As you can see, I have a 250GB SSD Drive which is 162,87GB used, but App's statistics show 342,48GB used!!! How it could be possible? Anyone has this same issue? Any way to fix it?
Regards.

Thanks Eric!
This solved my issue!!!

  • Data Guard -- v$archive_log applied column shows wrong info

I'm playing with 10g Data Guard. Both Primary and Physical Standby are in Maximum Availability mode. When I query v$archived_log column applied for dest_id=2 (which is physical standby) for some files it shows NO value but alert log on both primary and standby shows file transferred info. Even on physical standby v$archived_log shows log is applied YES value. My question is : So why is Primary database's v$archived_log shows value NO ?
I am trying to setup crontab so that once I see value YES in primary's v$archived_log for dest_id = 2 then I can backup archived log file and delete it from primary database machine. But my perl script won't work because primary v$archived_log shows value NO for applied column for dest_id = 2.
    Thanks.

    Hi OrionNet,
I think I am looking at the wrong column and also on the wrong database for what I need to do. Let me explain what I am trying to achieve.
I have a shell script to check if archived logs are shipped from Primary to Standby AND if Standby successfully applied it or not. My shell script was looking at Primary databases using following query
    select sequence#, archived, applied
    from v$archived_log
where dest_id = 2 -- running on Primary BUT looking at standby archived log destination
    order by sequence# ;
    SEQUENCE# ARCHIEVED APPLIED
    =====================
    58 YES YES
    59 YES YES
    *60* YES NO
    61 YES YES
After reading [v$archived_log reference entry in manual|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14237/dynviews_1016.htm#REFRN30011]
APPLIED Indicates whether the archivelog has been applied to its corresponding standby database (YES) or not (NO). The value is always NO for local destinations.
This column is meaningful at the physical standby site for the ARCHIVED_LOG entries with REGISTRAR='RFS' (which means this log is shipped from the primary to the standby database). If REGISTRAR='RFS' and APPLIED is NO, then the log has arrived at the standby but has not yet been applied. If REGISTRAR='RFS' and APPLIED is YES, the log has arrived and been applied at the standby database.
You can use this field to identify archivelogs that can be backed up and removed from disk.
I think I should use following query on Standby database and not on primary database
    select sequence#, registrar, applied
    from v$archived_log
where dest_id = 1 -- query running on standby so dest_id = 1 which is standby archive log destination
    and registrar = 'RFS'
    order by sequence# ;
    SEQUENCE# REGISTRAR APPLIED
    =====================
    58 RFS YES
    59 RFS YES
    *60* RFS YES
    61 RFS YES
So, my shell script should connect to standby database from primary database and evaluate which archive logs to delete after backup from primary machine.
Now I'll generate some gaps on Standby and check query again to make sure what I understand and expect is correct.
Hope I am clear now. Thanks for your help. My bad, I didn't read the manual correctly the first time.

  • Disk Utility gives wrong info when formating

Disk Utility has no problem formatting disks, but the bar at the lower right hand corner shows "Preparing to erase" all the time, requiring force quit to close the program. The problem has persisted after deleting disk utility preference. Advice on a fix will be most welcome.

To help isolate where the problem is, the first step should be...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
Does that do the same thing?

  • Disk suite shows wrong  devices

I have built a number of meta devices using onlide disk suite all worked fine . Had to do a recovery of the operating system to restore root and var partitions from tape . In doing so had to rebuild path-to-inst.
there is now a mis match between the information held by the OS and that held in the meta databases . Iit all works fine but metastat displays the wrong disk names .
does anyone have any idea how I can update meta db without having to rebuild the entire disk suite config

I think you'll simply need to remove the metadb and recreate - see this article for a similar situation

  • Why does my usb flash drive show wrong info?

Hi all, I hope this is a simple question to ask but I have a 1 G flsh drive that I have pretty much filled up with files to transfer to my PC. I have it formatted to FAT32 . I recently erased some files I didn't really need to free up space but when I go to "GET inFO" it still shows as only 4.9mb available even though, by my calculation I deleted about 200mb worth of files to free up space......what gives??

Did you empty the trash after you deleted the files. They may still be there unless you did this. You can use what size to see what all is really there.

  • Iphoto 6 help viewer shows wrong info !

    ok , i read the help viewer of iphoto , there you can read the follow ;
To create a new photo library:
    Quit iPhoto.
Rename your current iPhoto Library folder in the Finder or move it to a new location on your hard disk.
    Open iPhoto.
    Click Create Library.
    etc..
its a nice help story , but where is that click to create library ?
    that button doesnt exist...
    ooops mistake from apple ....
check for yourself.. iphoto version 6.02
    i use macbook pro 2.16 osx 10.4.6
    help viewer Version 3.0.0 (144.1)

    Hi Peran,
what happens when you rename the current library or move it out of the Pictures folder, then launch iPhoto?
to tell you the truth, it is much easier to hold down the Option key while launching iPhoto until you get the message screen. In that message screen are two buttons: one to "create" a new library, and one to "choose" another library to open.

  • SHOWING WRONG INFO IN 'DATA SENSE'

in the morning i checked 4.09gb used in data sense.but same day in evening again i checked for used data and found it was 3.90gb.hows that possible?? help please

Hello, ajit530ds. Is this for both cellular data and Wi-Fi connection? Any particular activity on the phone before checking the data? Have you already tried switching it off/on to check if it will go back to the original details? BTW, is this the first time you encountered this? We tried it on our end and haven't experienced it. But, we suggest monitoring it. We look forward to your reply.

  • Difference between Available and Used in Info for MacIntosh HD and Space Free and Space Utilised under Activity Monitor, Disk Usage?

I have a MacBook Air 2010, upgraded to OSX Version 10.8.4.  When I click the Macintosh HD and then look under Info, it says I have 120.47GB capacity, Available 60.97GB, Used 59.5GB.  However when I look under Activity Monitor, Disk Usage it says Space Utilised 92.18GB, Space free: 28.29GB.  Questions:
    Why the difference?
Which is more important for computer speed?
How to I reduce "Space Utlised" to closer to "Used"?  (I've already moved 25GB of the more bulky, less immediate data to external storage from the computer, including emptying IPhoto Trash and the main Trash.  The Space Utilised dropped only from 95GB to 92GB--while the Used space dropped from 85GB to 60GB.)

    Iheartapple1970
Just to let you I tried the reindexing before the Mendes advice and it had no effect.  Of course, I may have done it wrong. It was the HD icon from the desktop which I dragged into the Privacy window of Spotlight (and then did the +, OK, - and close Spotlight).  Should I have dragged in something else?  Or opened up the HD and dragged in all the contents?
Also, there is a small section in my HD which is for my wife's account which has a separate user name and password, although it has no data in it and I set it up while under my administrator account original, so my MacAir may think I still "own" it; in any case, I did not get any sort of error message saying I did not have ownership of the entire HD.

  • VSOM Not Showing Disk Usage for Media Servers

I wanted to try and figure out why my Operations Manager is not synchronizing the disk usage of the media servers storage partition. Currently I am running a fully virtualized environment on a Cisco UCS-B series chassis with version VSM 7.5.1 (Redhat 6.4) on my Operations Manager and all of the media servers.
As shown in the image below I am providing an example of the disk usage that shows for one of my media servers in the Operations Manager
Below is the an image of the disk usage shown through CLI of the same server.
As you can see there is a major discrepancy between the 37MB Used(Operations Manager) and the 4.8TB Used(CLI).
Has anyone ran into a similar issue and found a resolution, or know of the scripts on the Operations Manager or the media servers that are responsible for the sychronization of this information.
    Thanks,
    Michael

Interesting.  Thanks for following up and letting us know a punt self-righted it.  Have you checked to see if it only updated the once, or is it keeping accurate track now as storage get used?

  • CD Text Info showing wrong in Itunes

    Hello,
I mastered a CD for a client. I entered the CD Text info (which shows correctly in car and home units that support CD Text).
When I put the CD in Itunes a different band / disk name with different songs comes up!
This job was for a local band and they did not have IRCS codes, although I don't know if that would make a difference. This happens in every Itunes system (even the CD duplicator's) we tried. Plus, we imported the CD into Itunes (as wave files so there would be no change in sound, renamed the album, artist and track info and burned another CD from Itunes.
Same thing happens the wrong info (same band name and tracks) comes up.
Is this a known issue with Itunes?
    Is there any fix?
    Thanks,
    Rich

When you burn the CD from iTunes, after entering the correct information, do you have the option selected to Include CD Text? In iTunes, click your iTunes menu > Preferences > Advanced > Burning. If that is selected, and the issue still occurs, my guess is that when iTunes compares your disc to the Gracenotes CDDB, it finds something different. In my experience, iTunes typically is only able to find information for CDs that have been purchased, however, I've had a couple CD's that I burned myself on another computer (not even through iTunes, I don't think) and then brought to my Mac, and iTunes was able to find the correct information.

  • Wrong display of disk usage

This is where it started getting wrong. I used Winclone 3 to try to make a bootcamp image. Then I found out I didn't need that, so I clicked "move to trash" to delete the image file like what one would do to a normal file. However, it took longer than usual to carry out the "empty trash" process after I clicked "empty trash" (I guess I wasnt aware that a large image file indeed should take longer than usual to be emptied), so I stop the process by clicking the cross in the processing window. But, that didn't seem going right either and it hanged. Only thing I could do is to restart the computer even though it said the emptying process is still in progress. So I force quit finder and it successfully reboot. Although then the trash seemed empty, the disk usage wasn't looking good because when I removed some big movie files (tens of GB, eg. 57GB, 11GB), the disk usage isnt' changing. More importantly, when looking at the capture above, the used space of "Other" of the Macintosh HD is ZERO KB, which made me really think if deleteing the winclone image file had messed up something badly....
ps I went into the recovery disk and did reparing disk and permission after the weird encounter while deleting the winclone image. Here is the log from the disk utility:

I reckon reindexing the volume can help correct the disk usage display issue? I highly appreciate your help here!
But a rather weird side note to what had just happened.
Since I posted the question up, I'd been constantly searching for solutions and looking at the HDDs (internal and external), trying to sum up what might have gone wrong by checking the space taken up. But for a long while, I left my laptop plugged with the Time Machine for a coupld of hours untouched. When I came back and continued my search, I realized suddenly the disk space had updated itself. All the mass delete of files and space change is shown now - which is all before I reindexed the system. What a weird time gap the system takes to correct things. Now things seemed alright.
Looking at the Daisydisk analysis. I concluded that it was a almost half size of mobilebackup that ate up the HDD space (~2xxGB). Now the analysis showed that big mobilebackup trunk is gone.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Disk Usage report showing incorrect data file

When I go to ANY database (System, AdventureWorks*, user) in Managemant Studio, I right-click on the db, select Reports, select Standard Reports, and select Disk Usage.  The disk usage report shows the correct db on top, but always only shows AdventureWorks_Data.mdf
when I expand Disk Space Used by Data Files section.  This happens to any db I try.  When I look at Database Properties/Files for that database, the logical and physical file names are correct.
Since the correct files appear in Database Properties/Files, I'm hoping it's just a bug in the report.  Same thing happens if I run a Disk Usage by Table report for ANY database,  The tables for AdventureWorks always only appear,
    Thanks,  Mike

    Thanks Tibor!
I looked at the Properties for my login under Security/Logins and it shows my default db to be master.  Not sure if this is correct, but it sounds plausible.  I'll see if I can report the problem.
The only issue I can think of that was out of the ordinary for the install of 2008 R2 EE was this:
I originally installed 2005 DE, since it wouldn't expire.  After the install of 2005 DE, I decided to uninstall it and install 2008 R2 EE.  In between the installs of 2005 DE and 2008 R2 EE, I installed/uninstalled stupid stuff like 2008
Express, 2008 Express with Advanced Services (?), and 2008 EE.  After each uninstall I also did a system restore to be safe.
Now each time I open Management Studio, i get a pop-up stating that there are SQL Server 2005 registered servers on my sytem and asks me if I want to add them into Management Studio.  I always say no.
The AdventureWorks db is from 2005 and was installed automatically with 2005.  I installed the 2005, 2008, and 2008 R2 AdventureWorks databases to my R2 for class.  I'm not sure now if the Disk Usage report is showing me AdventureWorks_Data.mdf
because of my install into 2008 R2 EE or my previous install of 2005 DE.
Hope this kind of makes sense...

  • Show Item Info gives wrong numbers

On my iMac 20" Core Duo with OS 10.4.6, the hard drive data shown in the Finder with the Show Item Info option selected is incorrect. For example, the internal drive shows 232.57 GB with 47 GB free. Activity Monitor or Get Info both show the correct amount of 162.38 GB free. Same thing happens with external drives. Graphics show the correct dimensions, though. On my iBook with OS 10.3, the item info is shown correctly.
Apple suggested reinstalling the system, but this seems like overkill for such a minor problem.
I was just wondering if anyone else is seeing this?

I have noticed this problem on my iBook and eMac for the free space available on my iDisk and Hard Disks, but here is an easy workaround.
Go to the force quit item in the apple menu. Select the finder and relaunch. When the finder refreshes, the information will be accurate.

On your iPhone, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage.  There you should be able to see how much of your used storage is allocated to different things (ex., iphone backup, ipad backup, mail).  From there you should be able to figure out what is going on.

  • Disk not showing free space after deleting files?

Hi there. I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.2. I deleted about 20GB worth of data from my hard drive but when I go into activity monitor and click on disk usage it doesn't show an extra 20GB of space. I did this 2 days ago. Is there something wrong with my hard drive? There is nothing in the trash and I have restarted my laptop twice now. Also, I use Daisy Disk to show my usage and it says the same thing as activity monitor. Thanks in advance!

“You may notice a difference in available space statistics between Disk Utility, Finder, and Get Info inspectors. This is expected and can be safely ignored. The Finder displays the available space on the disk without accounting for the local snapshots, because local snapshots will surrender their disk space if needed."
