Storagetek 2540 - OVM 3.1.1

Hi experts,
I'm tring to configure OVM 3.1.1with a Storagetek 2540/2540-M2 array, is this supported? Do I have to install RDAC drivers in Oracle VM server?
I have this platform:
OVM Manager 3.1.1 on Sunfire X2270-M2 up and running
OVM Server 3.1.1 on sunfire X4470-M2 up and running
Storagetek 2540
The case is that I have 2 luns mapped in CAM for OVM Server, but it only sees the local luns, when I issue the commands: multipath -l, multipath -ll, rescan_for_disks, or rescan-scsi-bus.sh, from the ovm server it does not see the luns from the storage. I modify the multipath.conf file with the info of this doc:
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E20734_01/pdf/E24025.pdf
device {
vendor "SUN"
product "LCSM100_F"
path_grouping_policy group_by_prio
prio rdac
getuid_callout "/lib/udev/scsi_id -g -u -d /dev/%n"
polling_interval 5
path_checker rdac
path_selector "round-robin 0"
hardware_handler "1 rdac"
failback immediate
features "2 pg_init_retries 50"
no_path_retry 30
rr_min_io 100
Am I doing something wrong?
Regards

Maybe a zoning issue. I run some 4470 M2 and don't have an issue with the multipath. I run a ZFS storage product which shouldn't that much different in what you're running with the 2540 MT2. What fiber switch are you running?

  • Installing Sun firmware on Seagate disks for StorageTek 2540

    Hello,
I recently purchased a StorageTek 2540 array that has several open drive slots. As luck would have it, I also have several Seagate ST3146356SS SAS drives sitting on the shelf that according to the System Handbook are one of the models of drives supported in the STK2540 (Sun part #390-0422).
So I popped them in the chassis, and they show up immediately and are available for use, which is good.
The problem is, these drives have standard Seagate firmware on them (version 0006) rather than Sun firmware. As such, they show up with a different capacity than the Sun 146GB drives that are already in the chassis (which happen to be Hitachi, rather than Seagate drives).
I would like to update the firmware on these drives to the official Sun version of the firmware, but I cannot see how to do that. I tried to use the Install Array Firmware Baseline wizard, but when it analyzes the drives, it tells me for the Seagate drive:
    Current Firmware: Tray.85.Drive.06: 0006
    Baseline: Tray.85.Drive.06: Not Applicable
In the past I owned a bunch of Sun T3 arrays, and I used to replace standard manufacturer firmware with Sun firmware all the time, and it was very useful. I'd like to be able to do the same thing here. I also have a SAS controller in my PC, and could use Seagate's Seatools or DriveDetect tools (Windoze) or Seagate Enterprise CLI (Linux) to update the firmware, I believe.
It looks like I have the Sun firmware on my Solaris server (the /opt/SUNWstkcam/share/fw/images/disk/D_ST314656SSUN146G_0A1C.dlp file included in CAM 6.7).
Is it safe to grab that file and use it to update the drive firmware? Or is there a better way?
I realize that burning firmware to a non-Sun drive is not supported, and may render the drive(s) useless, but as I am not using the drives for anything else today, anyway, I'm willing to take that risk.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Bill

FYI, after some digging around, I discovered the "sscs modify firmware" command and tried that, but it did not work:
    61# sscs modify -a ss2540 -c Tray.85.Drive.06 -f -o -w \
    -p /opt/SUNWstkcam/share/fw/images/disk/D_ST314656SSUN146G_0A1C.dlp \
    firmware
    Analyzing Firmware
Incompatible firmware image. Skipping Tray.85 Slot.6
Firmware install failed.I'm guessing that since the non-Sun drives show up as model # ST3146356SS instead of ST314656SSUN146G, the firmware is deemed incompatible by the CAM CLI.
    So I'm still looking...
    Thanks,
    Bill

  • Unable to open a serial port terminal session w/ StorageTek 2540

Can some one please explain the method to access the Service Interface Menu on a StorageTek 2540? I've read the manual many times and obviously am missing something...
I can connect to the controller, I can send a break, however I never get the request to sync the baud rate.
    HELP!!!
    Thanks for the time.

Do you use USB-to-serial converter ? If yes try to change it.
I saw some converters which block break command.

  • Any experience/suggestions with Oracle on Sun Storagetek 2540 SAN via NFS?

    Hi,
Currently Oracle 11g is up and running on local drives. And we intend to move it off to Sun Storagetek 2540 SAN with Sun server 4140 (as NFS server) via NFS. So as far as the database server is concerned, it'd be NFS mount to the NFS server.
There's a new feature in Oracle 11g, Direct NFS Client, which is supposed to be more effective and more efficient than relying on O/S handling of NFS protocol. But in the white paper, it ONLY mentioned about NFS NAS scenario, not SAN. But I think it'd work with SAN as well, because as far as the database server is concerned, it's communicating to NFS server via NFS protocol. What do you think? Any experience/suggestions?
In terms of Storagetek 2540 SAN support, the Oracle's official answer would be "it's not supported unless the storage vendor and the storage device are listed in the Oracle Storage Compatibility Program list..." However, OSCP has been discommissioned in 1/2007, and Storagetek 2540 was introduced AFTER the date.
I think it MIGHT work given it's Sun/Oracle alliance.
    What do you think?
    Input/suggestion is appreciated,
    Helen

My 3 year old linux installtion on my laptop, which is my NFS client most of the time uses udp as default (kernel 2.4.19).
Anyway the key is that the NFS client, or better, the RPC implementation on the client is intelligent enough to detect a failed TCP connection and tries to reestablish it with the same IP address. Now once the cluster has failed over the logical IP the reconnect will be successful and NFS traffic continues as if nothing bad had happened. This only(!) works if the NFS mount was done with the "hard" option. Only this makes the client retry the connection.
Other "dumb" TCP based applications might not retry and thus would need manual intervention.
Regarding UFS or PxFS, it does not make a difference. NFS does not know the difference. It shares a mount point.
    Hope that helped.

  • StorageTek 2540 : set duplex controller using CLI (sscs)

    Hello all,
StorageTek 25xx disk enclosure software documentation mostly relies on the CAM graphical interface for performing tasks.
However, for those who wish to use the command-line interface (CLI), several tasks are not - or not visibly - documented.
We have a few StorageTek 2540 arrays which initially shipped with only one controller board per array. Then a second controller was added to each array.
When the second controller is installed, it has all 3 LEDs lit (green, orange and blue) and is seen as "failed" with the "sscs" CLI command.
Using the GUI, the "set array to duplex mode" menu, followed by a power cycle of the array, effectively enables the second controller.
    So the questions are:
    - How does one enable duplex controller mode on a StorageTek 25xx using the "sscs" CLI command ?
    - More generally, is there any advanced CLI documentation available, the CLI "quick reference" and sscs man page being insufficient for this kind of task ?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

    hl_fr wrote:
Nwi, thanks a lot for the information you provided.Your welcome.
This was the only missing link for complete array commissioning using only the command line.
IMO, this option should be in sscs. Actually, this is a service CLI, this isn't used for array management. And service actions are available in Service Advisor, that's why this is in the 'service' CLI.
Also, the "failed" state of the secondary controller before the array is set to duplex is confusing.
I understand, do no hesitate to open a call with us and request a RFE, this will be evaluated.
So to summarize for those interested, the main steps for setting up a Storagetek 2540 array from scratch are:
    - Do the cabling stuff.
    - Install the CAM software on a chosen host.
    - Using the serial cable an a virtual terminal, set up the IP parameters on the primary controller.
    - Using sscs(1M), declare the array in CAM with the primary controller IP address.
    - Set the array to duplex mode using the undocumented command you provided:
    /opt/SUNWsefms/bin/service -d <array name> -c set -q redundancy -t duplex
Note: as per the GUI online help, this requires a power cycle of the controller array.
    - Using sscs, set up the secondary controller IP parameters.Don't forget that Service Advisor (GUI) does a number of other actions, you also need to set the battery age for the new controller, you need to generate an new inventory, check the f/w, etc...
Therefore, Service Advisor is what should be used for such service actions.

  • Storagetek 2540   raid1+0

    Hardware:
    - StorageTek 2540
    - 12x 300GB 15k SAS (279,396 GB)
    - 2 disks defined as hot spare
I'm trying to create a raid1+0 set via CAM. The help says: "To combine disk
mirroring with disk striping, configure RAID-1 with more than 4 drives. The firmware
automatically creates a RAID 1+0 virtual disk."
With 10 disks left I should be able to create two mirror sets of 1395 GB and stripe
them. But when i create a new volume with a capacity of 1,2 TB (just to be sure)
with 10 disks CAM creates 1 Virtual Disk, Raid level 1.
What am I missing here ?

Hi, I have the same question as the person who posted the original message in this thread, and I need some clarification. If I do the following:
Create a new profile with RAID-1 and number of disks is variable
Create a new pool and tell it the max size of 1.363 TB
Create a new volume and let it grab six disks
it should create a RAID 1+0 volume? Should the display show 1+0? It still shows RAID 1. Thanks...

  • StorageTek 2540 and 2501 performance

I'm doing some work with a dual controller 2540 with 2501 expansion trays attached and would like to identify what the maximum throughput of the arrays should be.
This is how I understand the architecture:
Each 4Gbit FC host port can be active concurrently providing up to 400MB/sec per port, total of 1600MB/sec between the hosts and the array.
Each controller has a PCI-X bus between the host board interface and the SAS I/O controller, capable of 1GB/sec per controller.
The "SAS I/O controller" in each controller connects to it's local "SAS Expander" using a 2x wide SAS channel = 6Gbit/sec, and also connects to the other controller's SAS expander using (another?) 2x wide SAS channel.
The SAS expander in each controller has a separate single lane, 3Gbit connection to each of the 12 internal disks.
Each disk has a connection to the two SAS expanders, but only one is active (?). Total connection per disk to the rest of the array is 3Gbit?
There is a 4x wide connector from each SAS expander to the SAS drive port (to connect to a 2501). This has a throughput of 12Gbit/sec?
If the above is correct (and please feel free to put me right if I've got something wrong!), what happens in the 2501? From reading the documentation on the 2501, it would appear that the connection between the 2501 and the 2540 is 3Gbit (per controller). Is this a significant bottleneck if two 2501 expansion trays are added?
I got most of the above from http://shop.tisource.ch/pdf.php?id=1619793 and trying to match it with jmiller's comment in https://opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=258953
    Any insights appreciated.
    Thanks
    JR

The same result here for a 2540 attached to a Sun M4000 (with qlogic-hbas) running latest Solaris 10 8/07 with latest Patches. There is an 3510 attached also. The mpxio-device for the luns of the 3510 are working well.
The command "mpathadm-command show mpath-support libmpscsi_vhci.so" shows that the 2540-array (LCSM100_F) is supported. Nevertheless the mpxio-devices for the 2540 are not shown up.
    I will making a sun-call now.

  • Need docs that explain Fibre Channel setup, getting I/O error on 2540 SAN

Sun T5220 Host running Solaris 10 5/09 as management host.
    Qlogic 5602 FC Switch
Sun Storagetek 2540 - one controller tray with 9 300G SAS Hitachi drives. Firmware 7.35.x.
Sun branded Qlogic QLE2462 HBAs - PCI express, dual port. 3 in the T5220. qlcxxxx drivers for the HBAs.
Sun Common Array Manager software version 6.5.
I am a long-time Oracle DBA who has the task of setting up a Fibre Channel SAN. I am not a Solaris sysadmin, but have installed and maintained large databases on Solaris boxes where I had access to a competent sysadmin. I am at a classified site and cannot bring out electronic files with logs, configuration info, etc. to upload. Connecting the T5220 is the 1st box of many. This is my first exposure to HBA's, Fibre Channel, and SAN, so everything I know about it I have read in a manual or from a post somewhere. I understand the big picture and I have the SAN configured with 2 storage pools each with 1 volume in them on RAID5 virtual disks. I can see the LUN 0 on the T5220 server when I do a luxadm probe and when I do a format. I formatted one of the volumes successfully. Now I attempt to issue:
    newfs /dev/rdsk/device_name_from_output_of_luxadm_probe
I get an immediate I/O error. I could be doing something totally naive or have a larger problem - this is where I get lost and the documentation becomes less detailed.
What would be great is if anyone knows of a detailed writeup that would match what I'm doing or a good off-the-shelf textbook that covers all of this or anything close. I continue to search for something to bridge my lack of knowledge in this area. I am unclear about the initiators and targets beyond the fundamental definitions. I have used the CAM 6.5 software to define the initiators that it discovered. I have mapped the Sun host into a host group also. I do not know what role the Qlogic 5602 Fibre Channel switch plays with respect to initiators and targets or if it has any role at all. Is it just a "pass through" and the ports on the 5602 do not have to be included? Maybe I don't have the SAN volume available in read/write. I find bits and pieces in blogs and forums, but nothing that puts it all together. I also find that many of the notes on the web are not accurate.
This all may appear simplistic to someone who works with it a lot and if you know of an obvious reference I should be using, a link or reply would be greatly appreciated as I continue to Google for information.

Thanks for the reply. I had previously read the CAM 6.5 manual and have all the SAN configuration and mappings. Yesterday I was back at the site and was able to place a UFS filesystem on the exposed SAN LUN which was 0. I've not seen any reference to LUN 0 being a placeholder for the 2540 setup and when I assigned it, I allowed the CAM 6.5 software to choose "Next Available" LUN and it chose 0. LUN 31 on the 2540 is the "Access" LUN that is assigned automatically - perhaps it is taking the place of what you describe as the LUN 0 placeholder.
I was able to put a new UFS filesystem on LUN 0 (newfs), mount it, and copy data to it. The disk naming convention that Solaris shows for the SAN disks is pretty wild and I usually have to reference a Solaris book on the standard scsi disk name formats. My question/confusion at the moment is that I have 3 Sun branded Qlogic HBA's in the Sun T5220 server - QLE2462 (dual port) with one port on two of the HBAs cabled to the Qlogic 5602 FC switch which is cabled to the A and B controller of the SAN 2540 - there are only 2 cables coming out of the 5220; the 3rd HBA (for future use) has no cables to it. Both ports show up as active and connected on the server down to the SAN and the CAM 6.5 software automatically identified both initiators (ports) on the Sun 5220 when I mapped them. I had previously mapped them to the Sun host, mapped the host to a host_group, virtual disks to volumes, volumes to....etc.; and was able to put data on the exposed volume named dev_vol1 which is a RAID5 virtual disk on the SAN.
When I use the format command on Solaris, it shows two disks and I assumed this represented the two ports from the same host 5220. I was able to put a label on one of these disks (dev_vol1), format it, and put data on it as noted above. When I select the other disk in the format menu, it is not formatted, won't allow me to put a label on it (I/O error) and I can go no further from there. The CAM 6.5 docs stop after they get you through the mapping and getting a LUN exposed. I continue on the in a Solaris-centric mindset and try to do the normal label, format, newfs, mount routine and it works for the one "disk" that format finds but not for the other. The information from the format info on both the disks shows them as 1.09 TB and that is the only volume mapped right now from the SAN so I know it is the same SAN volume. It does not make sense that I would label it and format it again anyway, but is this what I am supposed to see - two disks (because of 2 ports?) and the ability to access it through one. I found out by trial an error that I could label, format, and access the one. I did not do it from knowledge or looking at the information presented....I just guessed through it.
I have not "bound" the 2 or HBAs in any way and that is on my list as next because I want to do multipathing and failover - just starting to read that so I may be using the wrong language. But I am wondering before I go on to that, if I am leaving something undone in the configuration that is going to hamper my success in the multipathing - since I cannot do anything with the 2nd "disk" that has been exposed to Solaris from the SAN. I thought, after I labeled, formatted and put a filesystem on the one "disk" I can write to that the other "disk" that shows up would just be another path to the same data via a 2nd initiator. Just writing that does not sound right, but I am trying to convey my thoughts as to what I logically expected to see. Maybe the question should be why am I seeing that 2nd "disk" in a Solaris format listing at all? I have not rebooted any time during this process also and can easily do that and will today.

  • 2540 Lost Communication problem

    Hi,
I came across a strange problem with two of Storagetek 2540s that we are using. When I check their status on CAM, it shows OK. But after a while, their status turns to "Lost Communication" all of a sudden. Once the network cables are unplugged and plugged back in, their status turns back to OK. I am using CAM 6.6.0.11, firmware is 07.35.55.
Has anybody encountered with this problem ? If did, please advise.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Are you printing via AirPrint? AirPrint is the native print functionality within the ipad. There are no test pages as such with the mobile device setup.
When both the mobile device and printer are connected to the same wifi network (or connected via wireless direct), the formatting etc. should be fine, provided the printer & print cartridge are in good health.

This patch 137934-02 includes well the 2500 f/w 06.70.54.11, if your array is already at this level and you still encounter a network issue, this means that your issue is different than the one described in our document 240105.
If your array isn't at this level and CAM doesn't suggest you to upgrade to it, then we need to further analyze this issue with additional logs, please contact a Sun support representative.

  • Disk Array volumes showing up on servers

    I have a StorageTek 2540 array with 2 controllers (A & B). I also have 2 servers T5220 (connected to controller A) and a T2000 (connected to controller B)
I have created several volumes on the array some pointing to the A controller, some to the B controller.
When I run the format command on the 5220 (A controller) all of the volumes show c2t0d0...d3.
From the T2000 (B controller) the format command shows c2t2d0..3.
If you try from the 5220 (A controller) to format a volume that is pointing through the B controller, it won't work. That's great no destroying an existing volume.
I know which volume points to what server, that isn't a problem yet.
    My question is:
Is there a way on the Array to only show the volumes pointing to each controller individually instead of together?
    thanks
    Bill

    Hi:
Try each of resolution steps 2, 3, 4 and 5 from the link below.
Normally #3 or #5 will fix the problem you are having...

  • CAM 6.1.0.16 (sscs) and Snapshot

    Dear all,
I'm using this command to create a snapshot called TEST of the Volume VOLUME-1 where ORACLE-1 is
    the snapshot reserve volume:
    #sscs create -a StorageTek-2540 -V VOLUME-1 -f failsnapshot - m ORACLE-1 snapshot TEST
My base volume VOLUME-1 has a capacity of 500GB.
Why does this "sscs" command create a 100GB large ORACLE-1 volume? Is this the default (20% of base
volume) and/or how can I modify this size?
THX in advance for any info!

You're attempting to create a ocfs2 file system on a disk or path that already has a ocfs2 filesystem.
Attempt to send command: create_pool_filesystem to server: ovms1 failed
This has nothing to do with whether you're having an issue with a X3-2. You can't create a server pool filesystem on a LUN or path that already has one. Either remove the existing file system or simply join the server to the existing pool.
