Storagetek LTO3 tape drive cannot detact in solaris 9
Hi, i have a problem regarding the installation of LTO3 tape drive to my SunFire V880.
The scenario is like this. I have 2 SunFire v880 and 1 SunFire 280R. Each of them using external lto3 tape drive. But 2 of them is working fine.Only 1 server has a problem. which is one of the v880.
Below are the patch for my Solaris 9
1. V880 - 118558-24 (tape drive detected)
2. V880 - 112233-11 (tape drive not detected)
3. 280R - 112233-11. (tape drive detected)
What makes me confused is at the tape drive documentation says that the tape drive only can be used for the patch higher than 112233-11 . But i can see that there is no problem with 280R. The scsi card and tape drive is the same model for all three servers.
I have run setevnv auto-boot? false, reset-all ,probe-scsi-all but still cannot run.
When I ls in /dev/rmt..there is no files in it.Can somebody help me..Tq
Hello,
The scsi card and tape drive is the same model for all three servers.
I have run setevnv auto-boot? false, reset-all ,probe-scsi-all but still cannot run.
If the drive isn't displayed by probe-scsi-all, check the cable and terminators.
Even if no SCSI device is detected, the controller itself should be displayed.
Maybe the external port of the controller has failed.
If the drive is displayed advance to the next step.
When I ls in /dev/rmt..there is no files in it.
Did you boot with the reconfiguration option ? Solaris 9 supports devfsadm to rebuild the device-tree without reboot, but if you can afford the downtime, a reboot is prefered.
Without reboot: devfsadm -C -c tape -v
This is a link to an online version of the manpage http://man.cx/devfsadm(1M)
With reboot: Either touch /reconfigure; init 6 or boot -r from the ok-prompt.
A feedback is appreciated (didn't help, component failed, etc.) !

Steps to Follow
The minimum level of L180/700/1400 library firmware to support the HP LTO Gen-3 drive is 3.08.01.
This firmware can be found on the CRC under Code Downloads under L180, L700 or L1400.

I have recently purchaes a xerver with a scsi card and connected it to a hp lto3 tape drive.
Does anybody know the device name in /dev?
In linux its /dev/st0 and solaris its /dev/rmt/0 but I cant seem to find any device that fits in macos.
Regardshave you used BRBACKUP to back up your database?
if so, it would have inserted a header file names .tape.hdr0 at the beginning of the tape.
If this is not the case, this means that you have not labeled it with "BRBACKUP -i".
or.. that you backed up something else on that tape with another backup tool such as tar, cpio or other 3rd party program. -
IDE/ATAPI Tape Drive: Support?
Hi Friends:
Does anyone know of a device driver/hack to allow IDE/ATAPI tape drives to work under Solaris 10? The BIOS recognizes the drive -- and I can also use the IDE/ATAPI SCSI emulation within Linux to write to the drive.
Is anything similar supported on Solaris 10?I never have used an ATAPI tape drive.
But I do know that some tape support was added to the Solaris
USB kernel modules (e.g. with the S9-x86 patch 115554-19,
S10-x86 should have the same support).
An idea would be to try on the these USB<->ATAPI bridge devices
(external enclosure) and attach the ATAPI TAPE device to such a
bridge and use the thing as an USB tape drive.
Works fine with ATAPI CD/DVD writer devices. Since I don't own
an ATAPI TAPE, I've never tried such an USB<->ATAPI TAPE
device, but it might work. -
Greetings!
I have Solaris 8 x86 up and running, but cannot get it to identify my HP Colorado 8 GB IDE tape drive. A 'dmesg' reports it found, 'devfsadm' will not create any links to /dev/rmt/.
Any ideas, or is it simply not supported?
-Dave MinorHello
back after a long while ... but I have the solution !
Darren, you were completely right, thanks ! I summarize if ever someone meets the same pb ...
1- normally, if the daemon "vold" is running, when inserting a CDROM in a drive, it's automatically mounted and then accessible with /cdrom/cdrom0
2- but, if "vold" is not running, it has to be launched :
/etc/init.d/volmgt start
3- if "vold" is running but you still can't access to your CDROM (it was my case !) => that means the CDROM is maybe not readable ! Actually I had a CD-RW and the drive couldn't read it. I copied the data on a normal CD-R and it worked !
thanks for help !

How to Add a New Tape Drive to Solaris 10
Hi,
I have an old DLT4000 tape drive attached to my SunFire V250. As I am starting to fill up the 40GB on that tape drive I have purchased a new SDLT320 and want to replace it with the old DLT4000.
I have set the SCSI ID on the back of the unit to the same number as the DLT4000 (3), powered off the old unit, unplugged it, then plugged in the new SDLT320 and turned it on.
I cannot seem to read the tape (mt -f /dev/rmt/0 status) - it says it is offline.
I thought I could simply swap the unit but obviously that is not the case. How do I add it properly?
Any help would be appreciated.
RobThanks, I tried that and no go.
I noticed the driver did load reload so I did a modload -p st and it re-loaded but I still cannot get the tape to read. It says that /dev/rmt/0 does not exsist.
What about if I do a reboot?
What commands can I use there?
Bear inmind I have rebooted twice, once with an init 6, the other, an init 0 and then a boot -rs.
Any other ideas? -
St.conf parameters for SDLT tape drive / Solaris 8
Hello,
I need the parameters for the SDLT tape drive from Tandberg for the st kernel driver. In the st.conf there is no entry for Tandberg SDLT.
With the st.conf, shipped with Solaris 8 10/01, my V880 crashes when accessing the SDLT with the mt command.
Does anyone here have the parameters?
Thanks in advance

GermanyHi Thomas,
Actually, a bug 4495684 has been filed to fix this issue. A 2.6, 7,
8 and SOlaris 9 patch should come out soon that will add this entry
in the st.conf.
I constructed this entries from the bug description. Try if it works.
It should else wait for the patch. Any way, please let me know
the results.

Tape drive and pci-x card with Solaris 10 on VMWare environment
I have a Sun X4170 server (x84_64) running VMWare ESXi 4.0. On it I have two VM guests- my production file server running Solaris 10 U7 and a test file server running Solaris 10 U9.
The X4170 has a PCI-X LSI Logic dual external U320 parallel scsi card. I have a tape drive + auto loader cabled to the X4170. It is a Quantum branded autoloader but I believe the tape drive itself is HP. The autoloader+tape drive share a single SCSI ID (6) but have separate LUNS.
I have two choices for making this system accessible to the OS:
- Virtualize the tape drive and loader individually.
- In VMWare, enable the scsi card as a pass through device. The SCSI card is then added as PCI device to the virtual machine (actually two devices since it is a dual scsi card.)
I had virtualized a single-drive tape drives with Vmware in the past.
However, when I tried I virtualize tape drive and loader, Solaris complained about the scsi id’s being invalid. I don’t think it likes two devices with a single scsi ID. Also, I think I need the backup software to see the REAL tape drive and autoloader (for inventory, changing tapes etc)

Any ideas? Maybe a need to update the MPT driver or is that dangerous?
ThanksActually, updating the kernel patches (and enabling hot plug service) did solve the problem. At some point during between testing the system before and after patching, the tape drive got turned off. Since the system patching was being done remotely it was not immediately obvious that the tape drive was off.

Hi Folks,
We have the following scenario:
- SunFire v490 server
- DAT 72 tape, SCSI
- LTO4 tape, FC (via qlogic HBA)
- Solaris 9 + updated patches
We need some help regarding the FC tape configuration. *"cfgadm -al"* shows the FC tape as:
c4::500110a0008a18eb tape connected configured unknownand *"ls -l shows"* :
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 68 Jan 31 14:16 /dev/rmt/1 -> ../../devices/pci@8,600000/SUNW,qlc@1/fp@0,0/st@w500110a0008a18eb,0:Wich is the tape's WWN. But when the tape drive status is invoked via "*mt -f /dev/rmt/1 status"* , it shows
/dev/rmt/1: No such device or addressWhat are we missing here?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance,
SECHi,
Thanks for your responses, after installing the suggested patch in single user mode, performing reconfiguration reboot did not help.
The FC HBA is already configured and working, but qhe we try to reconfigure the drive it shows:

Hi All,
I have a Quantum SDLT 320 connected to Sun Fire v490 which can't be detected in solaris but can be detected in OBP .
Can someone help about this issue.
Your prompt response will be very appreciated.Hi All,
Thanks for your help.
The problem is now solved when i proceeded as followed:
1. When i executed the command cfgadm -al
the output showed the below information about the tape drive controller:

I disconnected the controller and then run the devfsadm -c tapes which took about 1 hour to complete and then, now the system can detect and tape and the first backup run
successfully. -

Sys-suspend fails on Solaris 9 with tape drive present
I ran across a post by T. Kloeber (http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5109999&messageID=9374786) on the Sun developer forum on this.
I replaced my Solaris 7 SS5 with an Ultra 2 and installed Solaris 9 fresh. The external disks and tape drive are unchanged. The SS5 used to suspend properly about 95% of the time, but now the machine refuses to suspend with the tape drive connected. Log messages are:

and the system is not suspended. Is there anything i am missing on Solaris 9?
I am able to modunload the st driver, then when I attempt to suspend, the driver gets reloaded, and I get the failure above.
I ran across an E10000 service manual from 2.6 days that said that tape devices were not suspendable. They must have rethought that by Solaris 7. No idea why 9 should refuse this. I have the latest recommended patches.
TIA for any information!
