StorageTek LTO5 Tape Drive  - Encryption question

Hello All,
Just want to get some information on StorageTek LTO5 Tape Drive. my company bought them a while ago.
We want to start encryption on these LTO 5 backup tapes.
Just wondering if you guys have any information about....
do we need extra equipments, licences to do encryption ?
How to install or any usefull information ?
I am thinking to talk to oracle sales but before that I need some information on this. if you guys help me in this.
Regards.

Hi.
You should deploy "Oracle Key Manager". Every drive required additiona Oracle Key Managerl licene for turn on this feature.

  • Storagetek LTO3 tape drive cannot detact in solaris 9

Hi, i have a problem regarding the installation of LTO3 tape drive to my SunFire V880.
The scenario is like this. I have 2 SunFire v880 and 1 SunFire 280R. Each of them using external lto3 tape drive. But 2 of them is working fine.Only 1 server has a problem. which is one of the v880.
Below are the patch for my Solaris 9
    1. V880 - 118558-24 (tape drive detected)
    2. V880 - 112233-11 (tape drive not detected)
    3. 280R - 112233-11. (tape drive detected)
What makes me confused is at the tape drive documentation says that the tape drive only can be used for the patch higher than 112233-11 . But i can see that there is no problem with 280R. The scsi card and tape drive is the same model for all three servers.
I have run setevnv auto-boot? false, reset-all ,probe-scsi-all but still cannot run.
When I ls in /dev/rmt..there is no files in it.Can somebody help me..Tq

    Hello,
The scsi card and tape drive is the same model for all three servers.
I have run setevnv auto-boot? false, reset-all ,probe-scsi-all but still cannot run.
If the drive isn't displayed by probe-scsi-all, check the cable and terminators.
Even if no SCSI device is detected, the controller itself should be displayed.
Maybe the external port of the controller has failed.
If the drive is displayed advance to the next step.
When I ls in /dev/rmt..there is no files in it.
Did you boot with the reconfiguration option ? Solaris 9 supports devfsadm to rebuild the device-tree without reboot, but if you can afford the downtime, a reboot is prefered.
    Without reboot: devfsadm -C -c tape -v
This is a link to an online version of the manpage http://man.cx/devfsadm(1M)
With reboot: Either touch /reconfigure; init 6 or boot -r from the ok-prompt.
A feedback is appreciated (didn't help, component failed, etc.) !

  • SL500 - Enabling Hardware Encryption for Tape Drives

I have a SL500 with seven HP StorageWorks LTO-4 Ultrium 1840 tape drives. These tape drives have hardware encryption capabilities and several ways to configure the encryption settings.
In the white papers for the HP LTO-4 encryption technology (http://h71028.www7.hp.com/ERC/downloads/4AA1-4878ENW.pdf), all possible ways to manage the encryption settings are listed. One possibility, native mode encryption, is mentioned: "This method controls the LTO4 encryption from within the tape drive library. There is one key that is set by way of the library management interface (Web GUO or Operator Control Panel). This method encrypts all tapes with the same key, with the downside of negatively impacting the security level."
Does the SL500 provide any to do this?

We just got an SL500. When the Sun engineer was onsite, he mentioned an encryption capability. The way he explained it, there is an optional chip that needs to be purchased, as well as an encryption server. Once this is in place, encryption is easily done. If you were to have the same setup at a DR site, the encryption server would auto search for the encryption key whenever the tape is read. Seems to be a good system, but I have no experience with as we do not have that policy....yet

  • How to create VTL and tape drives

    hi!
i want to create one library like"vlib" containing two tape drives vt1 and vt2 having equal space of 512 MB.
Can u plz check that i am on right track
    ob>mkdev -t library -o -S 2 -a test:/d01/secure/vlib -v vlib
    ob>mkdev -t library -o -a test:/d01/secure/vt1 -v -l vlib -d 1 vt1
    ob>mkdev -t library -o -S 2 -a test:/d01/secure/vt2 -v -l vlib -d 2 vt2
    Insert Volume
now here is where i am confuse .....
    ob>insertvol -L vlib -c 512 unlabeled 1-2
now how to insertvol in tapes .....by above command is this volume available to all tapes in that library.
actually i want that i have two tapes vt1 and vt2 ,both should have space 512 mb now when i take full database backup through rman ....after when vt1 becomes full it start utilizing other tape vt2 automatically.
    plz helppppppppp

thank you ....but please can u check that what i have done...i am giving detail......plzzz
    STEP 1)
    ob> mkdev -t library -o -S 2 -a test:/d01/secure/vlib -v vlib
    ob> insertvol -L vlib -c 512 unlabeled 1-2
    ob> lsvol -L vlib
    Inventory of library vlib:
    in 1: unlabeled, barcode fec96134fdea10285e7000c2944f637
    in 2: unlabeled, barcode feef494efdea10285e7000c2944f637
    ob> mkdev -t tape -o -a test:/d01/secure/vt1 -v -l vlib -d 1 vt1
    ob> lsvol -L vlib -D vt1
    Inventory of library vlib:
    * in 1: unlabeled, barcode fec96134fdea10285e7000c2944f637
    * in 2: unlabeled, barcode feef494efdea10285e7000c2944f637
    *: in use list
    ob> mkdev -t tape -o -a test:/d01/secure/vt2 -v -l vlib -d 2 vt2
    ob> mkdev -t tape -o -a test:/d01/secure/vt3 -v -l vlib -d 3 vt3
    STEP 2)
Then i created backup storage as RMAN default and selected vt1 as tape.
after that with rman i took full database backup.

  • Java + Tape Drive I/O

Does Sun's JDK provide support for I/O to tape drives? From what I've read it does not.
The code I have written reports success on the write to tape, but is unable to read back. Attempting to read back with:
ois = new ObjectInputStream( new FileInputStream ( "/dev/st0" ) );produces this exception:

    Thanks! -Brett

    Thanks for your reply.
Am still hoping for a definitive answer on whether or not the I/O delivered in the JDK/JRE will support tape drives.
To answer your questions, the data written to tape contains 3 objects written with ObjectOutputStream and writeObject(). It is then followed by some amount of encrypted data. When written to a file on disk, yes, it works just fine.
One theory is that my Java code has no idea what block size to use, and thus, is reading back using the wrong one. For example, after writing the 3 objects, I can attempt to read them back with 'dd' and get an error with the same text that Java reports:
    [root@superm9 ~]# dd if=/dev/st0 of=myfile ibs=1 count=100
dd: reading `/dev/st0': Cannot allocate memoryHowever, with an increase in the 'dd' block size, am able to verify that the objects were successfully written to tape:
    [root@superm9 ~]# dd if=/dev/st0 of=myfile ibs=64K count=5
    0+2 records in
    0+1 records out
    249 bytes (249 B) copied, 1.00244 seconds, 0.2 kB/s
    [root@superm9 ~]# strings myfile
    PDSsr
    com.brettlee.crypto.FileHeader
    versionxp
    com.brettlee.crypto.DataHeader
    dataFormatI
    versionL
    keyAliast
    Ljava/lang/String;L
    ksNameq
    keyt
    /root/mydata/mykeys/ks1.JCEKS
    ia      Q"
    [root@superm9 ~]#
    {code}
Other theories include needing to pass in some argument for block size somewhere, use a different InputStream, or Java just doesn't do tape.
If Java does support tape drives, I'd sure appreciate a link to the doc explaining how it handles tape block sizes.  If not, knowing it doesn't would be fine also.  Is there a Java I/O person out there who could speak to this?
    Thanks again!  -Brett

  • L20 and IBM tape drive

    Hi all,
I have StorageTek L20 robot (FW 2.12.06) and IBM Ultrium-TD1 tape drive (FW:59C0) which i updated with latest firmware.
Now robot cannot recognise tape drive, with code: 00 Unknown Drive
I assume this is firmware related problem, so the question is:
Will robot firmware update to version 2.15.03 resolve this issue, and bring online my backup?

I have used external IBM SCSI drive with Solaris8 and legato without any issues.
What kind of a tape drive is it? What is the Sun Hardware platform being used? Are there any messages logged just before the panic? Is st.conf configured properly? Is there a problem on the scsi bus?
You might want to send the core files to Sun, if you have got suport on the box or use kdb yourself.

  • Poor speeds to LTO-5 Tape Drive

I have a new server connected with 8gb Fibre to a Dell TL2000 with an Lto5 drive(IBM LTO-5 Drive). For testing I am pulling directly from an ISCSI device that is using 3 NIC's in MPIO. I can successfully pull 230-250MBps from this Array.
However, The tape is only writing at between 50-60MBps. I can monitor the speed with the Fibre Channel utility. The queue length never exceeds 1.  Also the Nic's never exceed 25% utilization and When I create a large copy form the array I can easily
exceed 80% on all of them(when I am going at 250MBps)
CPU does not exceed 5% with 8 cores remaining parked and I still have 8gb of memory free.
So why can DPM not utilize the full bandwidth to feed the LTO5 drive? I need to feed the drive at over 200 so I can get into streaming mode and avoid shoeshinning the tape.
    Thanks,
    Nick

    Hi,
We have tools that mimick the way that DPMRA reads from disks and writes to tapes to try to narrow down where the problem is.
DPMRA reads from a disk shadow copy and we have a tool that mimicks disk reads from a folder and shows disk read speeds in real time.
    c:\>DPMFileIoPerf.exe -testIR -sourcedir "V:\Virtual machines\SMBEX01" -usesnap
Creating Snapshot for Volume : V:\

DPMRA writes and reads using 64K block size and 192K buffer size and the tape tool does the same to see what the raw write and read speed of the tape drive.

So, obviously, the bottleneck in the above test shows we have slow local disks, so we would never achieve greater throughput than the disk reads.
If you open a support case with us we can run the tools on the DPM server to get disk read and tape write speeds to see what is happening.

  • Hard Drive Encryption Issue

This is in regard to hard drive encryption issues in my USB Hard drive. I have Windows 7. I was encrypting my USB hard drive and
was able to enter a password. However, I did not receive any prompt to save the Bitlocker recovery key.  During encryption process, I received an error. The encryption process was unsuccessful. However, now when I plug-in the hard drive, I receive the
following message on the status bar:
Application and Device Control rule Block writing to removable media. Unencrypted drive found (No_Encrypted_Found) has blocked edpa.exe trying to access Volume
    {e3901a75-f1ff-11e1-817c-806e6f6e6963 alpha-numeric number appearing here}
When I try to open the drive, it asks for a password. When I enter the password, I am receiving the following error message:
Bitlocker Drive Encryption failed to recover from an abruptly terminated conversion. This could be due to either all conversion logs being corrupted or the media
    being write-protected.
I have read that Bitlocker repair tool can help resolve this issue.
However, I just have the password that I had set to encrypt the drive and Bitlocker recovery key identification. Can this help to get access to my hard drive data  using the Bitlocker tool.

  • Bit Locker Drive Encryption of Windows Vista

Have just downloaded the Bios Upgrade version 2.2 (QG40 BIOS_W220.exe), but I inadvertently omitted to turn the 'Bit Locker Drive Encryption of Windows Vista' off first, as Toshiba had advised.
Is there any corrections I can make to rectify this omission and ensure the G40 and the software operate correctly?

Thanks for your prompt reply Jeka-Nn. But I have several further questions before going too far with the suggestions as I am not familiar with software modifications.
    1. What am I actually trying to do overall by downloading and using the suggested application.? Can you give me some overall picture of what I am trying to do?
    2. Does this fix the problem without me having to make choices--is it self sufficient/self-installing?
    3. Will it return the system to its correct operational settings before I downloaded the Bios upgrade?
    4. I have downloaded the application suggested, but when I try to open the file it sends up a message that reads:
Error; this installer does not contain any compressed files. To create a self extracting installation package (with embedded files) run:
    "TrueCrypt Setup.exe" /p
When I press OK, it simply reverts to the downloaded list which has the TrueCrypt v7.0 included, but nothing else happens.
What do I need to do to fully install the application?
    5. Are there any other steps /inclusions that I need to make to fully correct my 'stupidity'?
Sorry about all these questions but you can see I am a raw beginner at this work.
    With thanks, rons

  • Tape drive selection for SAP r/3 Landscape

    Dear frinds,
We are presently in the process of selection of Tape drive for our sap r/3 landscape. I.e, in the process of sap sizing.
My backup requirements are upto 1 TB. We have development QA and PRD servers in our landscape. We are planning for SAN based storage solution.
What I would like to know are as follows...
    1. We are planning for SAN Based Tepe library.
With SAN Based tape library is it manditory to use Backup manager to initiate backup and restore operations.
My question is b'cos i need to upgrade skillset
Is it possible to mount the Single SAN Based Tape drive on my Development, QA and PRD as if they appear as local drives (file system )on the servers. If this is not possible i need to know about the tape drive which can be mounted as local tape drive.
I want only one tape drive in my landscap and I must be able to use sap r/3 tools to backup and restore.
Keeping presice my expectation what i want to know is : I want to conduct backup and restore operations in my SAP r/3 landscape with single tape drive and using SAP BRtools only( i.e. using DB13/ BRtools from command mode ).
It would be great suggested and participated in discussion.
    Thanks and Regards,

    Hi Nirav,
the maintenace cost will be the same as before.
the maintanance cost include the possibility
that if you pay the maintenace fee regularly you can always get the
newest software releadse and the support packages and kernel for it.
please also look at this link.

  • How to get rid of drive encryption?

    Hello,
I don't know if this is the right place to post this. If not, please redirect to me the appropiate place. I have a HP Elitebook Folio 9470m with Windows 7 Pro x64. Previous user configured Drive Encryption through HP Protect Tools. Everytime the laptop is turned on it asks for password before booting up into anything. I know the password but I want to get rid of this. I tried reformatting the C drive partition and installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 but I still get the login screen for booting up. How can I get rid of this? Is this configured on the BIOS? If I reformat the whole hard drive, including the Master Boot Record, will that get rid of the drive encryption?
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I suggest you read the protect tools manual for your model at the link below and see if there is anything there for how to remove the drive encryption.  I am pretty sure you will have to remove it thru that program.

  • HP StoreEver LTO-2 Ultrium 448 SCSI Internal Tape Drive

I work for a small christain school and we moving into the modern age at the pace we can afford.  I have built a small print and file server for our school.  I had donated a pair of nice   LTO-2 Ultrium 448 SCSI Internal Tape Drives.  I installed one and got drives to auto load.  But am in need of a recomendation for the best backup software.  I am running windows 2008 R2 standard. 16gb of ram and 2.5 tb of storage space.  Wanting to do tape backups of some important school files.

  • Tape drive reconfigure

    Hi all,
i am presently running a server that has no video card. No problem to access it because a use rlogin to manage and maintain the server.
Now i need to reconfigure the server to "see" the new tape drive i installed.
One way to reconfigure the server is to use the OK prompt with the STOP-A keys. But that works only locally, not on the remote host.
Is there a way to reconfigure the server by remote access?
    Thank you

Thanks for the info. According to the following manual (caution it's a pdf), on pdf pages 31 & 32 of 149 ( manual pages 1-19 & 1-20) it is not hooked up exactly as specified but this shouldn't be a problem.
They have the terminator on the AutoLoader. You have it on the drive.
    http://sunsolve.Sun.COM/handbook_pub/Systems/L9/documents/L9_svc.pdf
The question I have is where is it connected to the E250? Did you have an HBA (Host Bus Adapter or SCSI controller) installed to support this L9. Depending on the drive installed in the L9, (DLT8000 vs DLT1) You would need the proper controller installed in one of the PCI slots in the E250. See:
    http://sunsolve.Sun.COM/handbook_pub/Systems/L9/components.html
Also, if this is a DLT8000 drive in the L9 then you may want to load the latest st.conf patch to enable DLT8000 support in the /kernel/drv/st.conf file. Just search for st.conf in Free Patch Descriptions in SunSolve. Use the appropriate patch based on the Solaris version you have installed.

  • Tape drive HPultrium LTO-4 and SNMP

    Hi,
I need to know if the LTO4 tape drive is supporting SNMP when used with a Windows system.

    Hello Peter,
I need to know if the (.. HPultrium ..) LTO4 tape drive is supporting SNMP when used with a Windows system.
Is this a Sun StorageTek library ? If yes, did you review the User's Guide ?

  • Support for 4mm tape drives?

I know this probably isn't the best forum for this, but I didn't see any forums for deal with periphrials at all...
At work, we occasionally get some 4mm DDS-3 tapes that we have to read (pretty simple, just use Unix's "dd" command), and the Sun computer we've been using, we're getting ready to retire (for other reasons). HP makes 4mm tape drives (still makes DDS-3's but also DDS-4's and DAT72's), and makes USB and SCSI models. See
    http://h18004.www1.hp.com/storage/tapestorage/datdrives.html
MacOS X has "dd". Macs have USB. A MacMini is cheaper than say a new Sun. But will a MacMini with MacOS X 10.4 be able to use an HP USB based 4mm tape drive? Is it supported? Can I use it with "dd"? Really, I suspect the question is MacOS X specific, and not specific to MacMini's, but again, for lack of an appropriate forum for this question...
If you've used an HP USB based 4mm drive (DDS-3, DDS-4, DAT72) with a Mac, let me know. I've searched Apple's web site for 4mm and came up with nothing related. If this information is out there, it's well hidden.

You might try asking in the Mac OS X 10.4 area. I think you'd be more likely to find someone who knows there, should there be an answer (probably not many mini owners use 4mm tape).
    Good luck.
