Store video lib on external harddrive

Hello,
I´d like to store all my video on an external harddrive to use it with several computers. Do we know anything about the libary in IMovie. Can I store the video on a disk and IMovie - on any of my several computers - will bring me back to the lib when I attach my harddrive. I am not talking about video projects, I talk about the collection of raw material that I collect from my camera and which I´d like to store in one place....
Martin

@ rnb2
are you able to check, if all footage and all config for events goes on the external harddrive. Is there a way to check, if a second mac would be able to work with the lib on the external drive ?
@all
With the massive amount of data created by video import, an external storage is essential. And the perfect solution would be if more than one person can work on the material from different computers (not at the same time of course). So all video is stored in the same place, and my wife works on the family movies - with her MacBook and later that day I work on the sports recording with the MBP......

    Look at this discussion:
    http://https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1798640
The file will be stored in:  Macintosh HD / System / Library / Compositions.
I have no idea what setting there may be and how to change them.

  • Want to store video clips on external hard drive

I have an external hard drive that would be great for storing video clips (as opposed to using my Mac's HD space). When I import video from my camera I use a firewire cable (4pin-9pin). The problem is that the Mac only has one 9-pin connection, so I have to unplug my external hard drive. Do I just need to import the clips onto my Mac HD and then copy them to the external hard drive, or is there another way? My external hard drive has a USB 2.0 connection, a Firewire 400 and 2 Firewire 800 connections.

You should be able to plug your camera directly into one of the FW 800 ports on the hard drive. As you have 2 FW 800 ports on the drive, the other port can still be used as a "permanent" connection to your Mac. This should work quite seamlessly. FireWire drives can be "daisy chained", normally with no untoward issues. However, Canon cameras have been known to cause problems, as they prefer to be the only device using the FW connection.
I've done this numerous times with my older Sony miniDV camcorder when using iMovie HD 6, but have not tried it with iMovie '09, mainly because I'm now importing AVCHD video through one of the MacBook Pro's USB ports.
Note that when you import your clips from the camera, iMovie will ask what location you wish to store the clips. Here you can nominate your external FW drive. iMovie will place the clips in a folder named iMovie Events on that drive.

  • Where is the album artwork when you store songs in an external harddrive?

I have all my songs on an external flash drive but I have the I-tunes program on the C drive of my windows laptop.
In I-tunes I pointed the storage to the E drive and it all works fine.
But there is one wrinkle. It looks as if some of the album artwork is still stored on the C drive and NOT in the I-tunes folder in the E drive.
I know this becasue when I hit "add folder" and added the entire contents of my I-tunes folder on the E drive I:
1 got all my songs - no problem
2 encountered a delay as the program told me it was finding artwork for about a third of my songs.
It looks like the E drive has artwork for all the albums to which I manually added artwork. But it does not have the artwork for songs where the artwork came from the advanced / get album artwork function.
    Weird eh? Any thoughts?

  • Can I store my photos, music and films on external harddrive and backup everything to time capsule?

    Hi
I have just bought my very first mac this week. I have the iphone 4 already but have been used to using windows my whole life.
    I have purchased:
    21.5inch iMac 2011
    2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
    4GB RAM
    500GB Harddrive
    Latest version of Lion OS
Its only been a couple of days and already I dont know  how  I ever lived without it.
The predicament Im in is this: I want to use apple Tv to stream my music, photos and films to my TV in the living room.  But I would also like to store all of this on an external harddrive, rather than filling up my internals with it then not having enough room for anything else.
Can I store my films, music, photo's etc on an external harddrive and still stream to apple tv? Does it need to be a specific external harddrive?  And whats the best way to back everything up? Would a 2TB Time Capsule backup my mac and everything on my external harddrive?
Sorry for all the questions, Im very new to this and dont know much about harddrives.
    Thanks in advance..
    Gem

Yes.  However, it gets more complicated.  Time Machine is better for archival backup, and typically requires twice the space for the data as the original.    Streaming from external drives while possible can get laggy on video unless you use Firewire or Thunderbolt.    If you have any old 802.11b or 802.11g devices, you'll want to keep them on a separate network.  A better investment is a couple external hard drives for backup and one for any excess stuff that won't fit on your main 500 GB drive, and to use cloning software instead.  When you need archival backup, burn to CD or DVD that is prepackaged in jewelcases.  See my FAQ* on good media and backup http://www.macmaps.com/cdrfailure.html
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
When backing up make sure nothing else is happening on the machine from your end.

  • Moving photos and videos from iPhone, to iPhoto, to external harddrive. Videos come out to be less than 0 seconds. HELP, PLEASE!

Hi guys! This is my first discussion and I'm not exactly sure what kind of details to put, so I'll just be as detailed as possible. I hope I don't confuse anyone. I really REALLY need help!
I've got a 16 GB iPhone 4S and always find myself filling up my phone with photos and videos, so I upload both onto my MacBook Pro 2011. Now that my laptop's getting full... I'm uploading all of those backed up photos and videos onto a 500 GB Seagate external harddrive.
All of my photos open just fine. It's the videos that I'm worried about. All of the videos that I've loaded from last year (2013) are playing well. Anything before 2013 aren't opening properly. I'm opening the video files directly from my external harddrive. It goes:
         1) Opens up QuickTime Player
         2) Shows that it's converting
         3) Shows a frame from the video, but the time says 0:00-0:00.
I had a LOT of videos from before 2013 and would like to retrieve them if possible. They're no longer on my laptop though. All of the video files are 20 KB - 980 KB and has to convert on quicktime player for me to watch them. Some of the video files I've tried out were from 2013 and 24 KB and opened just fine. I've opened both ~20KB - ~900 KB video files before 2013 and they're all 0:00-0:00 time length. Anyone else having this problem? Thanks!

I have the same issue.  We've lost all of our older videos including videos of our children and since passed family dog.  I have no idea why this has happened.  I have backed up religiously, but now even the archived photos are 0 seconds.  So frustrated with iPhoto.  This is the second time this awful software mysteriously lost pictures or videos.  Last time it was the birth pictures of my second daughter.  And now this.  Horrible horrible product.
Older videos are all now just 0:00:00 in length.  We did not alter these at all!!
    HELP!!

  • Apple TV getting video or audio from external harddrive on wifi N

The only way i can get media to sync is to put it on my mac book pro's harddrive. The external is connected by the airport new N. Has anyone had this problem, this bothers me to have to move data from a wireless external harddrive to the powerbook, just to get it to sink. And yes, I have Itunes looking at the external harddrive. But when i point it local, it works fine. Help please.
Or apple work on a patch for this. Don't make me do this much longer..
    roland

I keep my music and unviewed video on my MacBook Pro's hard drive. I have a master backup of my music and all videos, both viewed and unviewed, on an external hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme Base Station. I have a desktop PC connected by Ethernet to the AEBS and its iTunes Library points to the master copy of files stored on the external hard drive. I synched my local iTunes Library on my MacBook Pro with my AppleTV and, when I want to watch a video that is not synched to the AppleTV, I stream it from the remote iTunes Library on the external hard drive via my desktop. Since the external drive and PC are both hardwired to the AEBS, I assume I am getting n speed over the network to the AppleTV.

  • How to store videos and photos in external storage

    Hi,
May I know how do I store videos and photos into an external hard disk so that I can free up my Macbook storage?
Hope to receive advice on this.
    Thanks
    Stephen Lim

    Hi Stephen
Yes there are problems with this
    A. external Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to be used for VIDEO as KLAUS1 writes.
    B. a FireWire or Thunderbolt one is better than USB/USB2 as they performs badly to me especially when filling up.
    C. DO NEVER - move or alter any folders named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder as this will break the connection to iMovie
ONLY move Event's and Project's from within iMovie Application !
    D. Then the BIG problem - as I have no answer to - Video and Photos in iPhoto or Aperture.
Moving them to an external hard disk - and at least MY iMovie can not see them any more - resulting in broken Project's - most probably beyond repair.
and here I run into the wall of ignorance
    Yours Bengt W

  • Transferring home videos on DVD to external harddrive through macbook

I want to transfer all our old home movies which are all on DVD to an external harddrive. I try dragging but that didn't work. I made a copy of the video and dragged to hard drive but that also didn't work. What do I do?

Hi - The movies were from several different video cameras all 8mm tapes originally. My husband burned the tapes onto DVD-Rs. I tried just dragging the video onto the external hard drive and I got an error message that says" The DVDVRF430 can not be moved because the OneTouch 4 (name of hard drive) can not be modified". I tried dragging it to a folder within the harddrive and got same message but said the folder could not be modified.
I then went into Imovie and played around. There is a way to copy the video through Imovie but the only option it gives me is to copy it to my mac harddrive. I thought I would be able to direct it to the external harddrive because It has a pull down bar but the only option is the mac internal drive.I have 19 years of videos and do not want them on my MAC harddrive but if I have to load them to the Mac then take them off to put on external I will - just seems like a long process of extra work.
I originally had a PC and all of the documents on the harddrive were from my PC which died. Is it possible that I need to do somehting to the the harddrive to recognize the mac? I have opened files on the external harddrive and edited them on the Mac and then saved them with no problem. I have had to change the programs a bit to make them compatible since many are older Word or Microsoft Works files but that is all.

  • My mac won't read my external harddrive's videos that I took with my Nikon.  Half the videos won't play, and those are .avi files.  WHY won't they play anymore and how can i retrieve them?

What exactly is your problem? Is it, (a) your Mac doesn't read your external disk, or, (b) you can't retrieve your videos, or, (c) you can't play them, or, (d) you were able to play them at one point, but not any more.
What version of Mac OS X are you using, what app are you trying to play your videos with, what happens when you do, and what error messages, if any, do you get?

  • Best Raid 5 expandable external harddrives for video editing & storage.

    Hi,
I'm hoping to get opinions and recommendations from the community concerning the best Raid 5 expandable external harddrives for HD video editing and storage. Initially, I'd like to start with an 8tb and have it expandable to 16tb, that will work with both Mac and PC. There seem to be a number of options, but it's difficult to find reviews from video editors. It would be nice to stay under $ 2,000.00.
    Thanks for any input.
    Heather

If the brief includes "fast enough for video editing", you are looking for an editing solution.
If you want it to be fast enough to edit video and be shared by two computers, you are looking at a server type system connected through a very fast network interface (fibre, dual channel iSCSI)
If this is the case, $2k is not going to do it.
What it comes down to is this - Basic backup can be had relatively inexpensively as can direct connect RAID systems. The complexity and cost comes from the shared network storage with enough bandwidth to support multiple systems.
What do you want for your $2000?

  • Transferring Video Projects to and External Harddrive

Can I transfer a video project to an external harddrive and delete the original from my computer. If so, whats the best way to do it"?

    csu1970
What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
Depending on the circumstances yet to be exchanged, the easy way out would seem to be to archive the existing project via the program's Project Archiver/Copy Option with the Copied Folder pointed to the external hard drive. That folder will contain the project file (project.prel) and its assets including copies of source media that went into the project. Then you can delete the project file, its assets, and source media from the Local Disc C. DO NOT DELETE SOURCE MEDIA ON LOCAL DISC C THAT ARE ALSO BEING USED IN ANOTHER ACTIVE PROJECT.
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premiereelements/using/WS09e4b3c48f3a79fc19b622510385d4355c-7d cb.html
After that you can work with that particular program from that location.
Before you start a new project, you can set the project Save In: (new project dialog) and program assets (including Scratch Disks) to the external hard drive, best to its own folder.
In this type of situation, the prime concern to to avoid media disconnect issues. If you move or delete source media that went into a project after the project's save/close, you are going to have major problems with "Where is file....?" and the like.
    More later.

  • Mp4 videos on external harddrive in front row

    Hi
I wanted to se my movies on my new mac mini, so I had bought 2 750 GB external harddrive. I have used handbreak to convert my dvd to mp4.
I had made a alias, so Front row can find the movie on my external drive, but I can't get it to made a art work as if the file is on the same external harddrive where my Itunes music is.
I have tryed MeTaX, but the same resualt as if i don't use it.

Another option would be have your iTunes library be located on your external drive and import all of your movies into iTunes. Add artwork to each of your movies via iTunes and the artwork would be displayed in Front Row. This could get tedious, though. A since you have two external drives, you'd have to build your library using one existing drive then once it becomes full, change the location of your library to the second drive.
Hopefully this helps! The more I think about it, the more I dislike the idea, though. But whatever works for you.

  • Which external harddrive best for huge FCP video project?

    Hi,
i'm editing a massive film, pulling media off 3 1TG external harddrives. The drives I've been using are a Chinese brand that works smoothly with premiere but is way too slow for FCP (can't play through the timeline without getting dropped frame notices, even though I'm not daisy chaining them). I'm thinking I have to replace all the drives with better, faster ones. Sooo, wanted to ask you pros, what brand of harddrive is the best and most reliable for this workflow (and reasonable affordable- i have to buy a few!)? Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch! O

dropped frames, fyi, are on playback only. It doesn't mean you are losing frames in your files or in your sequences. It's not necessarily the drive speed causing the dropped frames. Sometimes it's just the inability for FCP to process the frames fast enough, which is processor based, not drive based, and has a lot to do with filters, transitions, and the like. You can turn off the dropped frames warning in the User Prefs.
That being said, if it IS drive speed, make sure that, not only are you using at least Firewire 800 drives, but also that the drives are 7200 RPM and not 5400 RPM. The reason you may think it works better with Premier is because Premier may not have a dropped frames warning.
