Storeagent is trying to install new software?

I was using my Mac tonight and suddenly this dialog box I had never gotten before popped up. It said:
storeagent is trying to install new software.
Type your password to allow this.
...with fields to enter the data and a "Cancel" and "Install Software" button. In addition, there was a help (?) button that when clicked on called up Mac Help Center with the section on "If you forget your login password" but no data on what this storeagent is.
The dialog seemed to have been provided by Mac OS, since it floated above all windows.
Normally, when I get an unfamiliar message, I type a phrase from it (in quotes) into Google and this pulls up plenty of cases where people have inquired about the same issue before me, but this time when I entered the phrase used in the dialog and the title of this post, I got nothing. Surely I am not the first one who has encountered this dialog before?
I clicked Cancel, since you hear so much about viruses these days attempting to install malignent software. When I did so, I got a dialog with the icon of the Mac App Store, saying the app update had been cancelled.
Maybe this dialog is legit? Advice appreciated.

Okay, I've thought of a couple of things you can try if you don't want storeagent to run when MAS is not open:
1. Go to Applications > Utilities and launch Activity Monitor. Processes are arranged alphabetically. scroll down to storeagent and, if it is running, highlight it. Then go to the top left of the window and click on "quit process". That is a manual way to stop something from running. Test: leave Activity Monitor open and launch MAS - check to see if storeagent launched itself right after that. If so, quit MAS and see if it quits - if not, quit the process manually.
2. What settings do you have set in System Preferences > Software Update? I prefer not to have things done automatically so I have everything unchecked:
You could test by unchecking everything to see if you get any further password prompts for installs after that.

Put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Reset Password. After resetting the password use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for startup and restart.

  • Getting "object already exists" message when trying to install new software.

Quite coincidentally, I came across a solution for the "object already exists" message that had recently been interferring with the downloading of new software.  This solution was offered by another on a different website, but it has solved my problem.
My operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate.
The Windows Security Update  KB2918614 seems to be wreaking havoc with some systems.  It did so with mine.
After removing this particular update, I am now able to install software (was actually just trying to reinstall my HP printer software as I am having another issue with it).
Don't know if this will help anyone else, but it worked for me.

To rid myself of the "object already exists" issues due to the Windows Security Update KB2918614 . . . I have learned that an additional step must be taken to keep Windows Updates from automatically reinstalling this update . . . once again, preventing installation of software.
One needs to hide the update to prevent Window Updater from reinstalling.
    Taken from the Windows community:
Marilyn - Support Engineer replied on December 9, 2008
The update in question can be hidden, which will prevent this update from downloading and installing.
    To hide this update:
           Open Control Panel
           Open Security
           Select ‘Windows Update
Select the option View Available Updates in the upper left hand corner
Locate the update in question, right click and select ‘Hide Update’
    Thanks
Once again, my operating system is Windows 7 Ultimate and this particular update was causing difficulty for my specific operating system.

  • Tried to install new software 3.0 version on Touch - not working! Help!

OK, so I connected my iPod Touch to my desktop, opened iTunes, purchased the upgrade software for my iPod and it started updating away. It said to keep my iPof connected as it would say when it was done.
Well, it is done but it is still showing that it has the old software even though they deducted the $4.75 from my iTunes account.
Can someone tell me how I can tell if this worked or not and how I can fix this problem? I have a first generation Touch.
    Thanks,
    Cass

Well, I had restored my iPod but I guess I did not complete the process or do it correctly. This time it worked!
Thanks so much for your help

  • Administrator error message when installing new software

    Hi~
I am working with an ibook on OS X.2.8. I gave this computer to my dad when I got a new one and set up an account for each of us, both with administrator priviledges. I just tried to install new software and it keeps telling me that I don't have permission to install software on the default location of macintsoh HD and to check with the administrator... even though I am the administrator. It didn't offer me an opportunity to enter a password or to install the software in an alternate location. I tried installing a different program to see if it was a problem specific to this application and found the same difficulty. I tried both accounts and this happened in both. Then I tried setting up a new account as an administrator and this didn't work either. Then I delelted all accounts except for my dad's account. I've checked the permissions in system prferences mutliple times. Nothing works. Any ideas? I would appreciate any help as this is very frustrating and this computer will soon be useless if we are unable to install updates or new software.
Thanks and have a beautiful day!
    C

Hi xinaroyall, and welcome to the forums!
This is the Tiger/10.4.x forums, but we'll try to help.
I've checked the permissions in system prferences mutliple times.
You nreed to repair them in Disk Utility, then reboot, but I'd make second admin account again for safety.
Let's see where we are after that.

  • Storeassetd is asking for username and password to install new software...

Turned on my MacB Air and the battery icon didn't display percentage....wanted to change that icon if I could find it but couldn't....then pop up window says:
storeassetd is trying to install new software enter username and password.
I've guessed every combo I can and am not coming up with the right combo........it keeps popping up....
    Suggestions?  Comments?  Questions?
    thanks....

Hi. Updates from apple come from software update or the app store and usually  display what the update is. If you have a newer operating system you can go to the app store my account and look for any updates. Or give you a triangle to click for more info. The percentage for battery is at the battery icon upper right Click on the icon and a drop down will let you choose show and percentage.

hie there Actually um trying to update new iOS 7 for my iphone 4 but when i press the button to install new software suddenly it appears why " iOs 7 failed verification because you are no longer connected to the internet " even my phone is already connected to net

I tried powering down and re-starting the iPhone (as suggested at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275). This seems to have cleared the "...not connected to the Internet" problem, and iOS 6.1 is now in the process of downloading.
Thanks very much for your feedback.
