Storing Footage on Data DVD possible?

Hi all,
I have a ton of mini-dv tapes with footage. I plan to keep these, but i am wondering if it's possible to transfer them onto DATA DVD's for another, more easily accessible, storage alternative. My plan would be to sort them by year, event, etc. and then place the video files on data DVDs once they are all categorized. Then when i plan to edit a video of something, i can go to that DATA DVD and access the footage i need using something like Mac the Ripper... It would seem so much more organized than having to hook up my camara and search through tapes to find the footage i need.
Is it possible to do this? I'd really appreciate any advice you have to offer.
Thanks!!
Karen

I had a feeling this would be the answer I'd get. My brother called me this morning wanting to know if he could do it this way. In the past, i've always read that dv-tapes were best for storage while DVDs are best for pure viewing. This is why i have all my tapes labeled meticulously! That way i can find what i need when i want to edit something together.
He didn't care about how many DVD's he would need to do it. He's loaded! What was most important was the organization part of it...being able to put videos into files and store them that way. Didn't sound like such a bad idea, so i thought i'd ask...
He really wants to be able to put his tapes away somewhere and convert everything he needs into digital format. It would be nice if there was some way to do that without losing quality. I give it a few more years... they'll come up with something!
Thanks!
Karen

  • Keynote storing obsolete format data, and possible connection to crashes

An “Ah ha!” moment with Keynote leading to a question about how it stores information regarding themes and fonts, and whether this is a bug in Keynote and/or if there is something that end users can do as a work-around. These points came to my attention today when I exported from Keynote to PowerPoint to share a (very inferior ) version of my presentation with a colleague. Note that the Keynote file I exported from has not exhibited any problems related to error messages or crashes.
    (1) Prior to making the export, I changed all slides to Keynote’s standard out-of-the-box “Gradient” theme since I had used Keynote Theme Park animated “Global Cool” theme (www.keynotethemepark.com). However, even though no slide any longer contained the KTP theme, in doing the export Keynote created a media folder of movies that contained the animated KTP theme. So Keynote is apparently storing obsolete file data and not cleaning up its house after the file is changed.
    (2) Prior to making the export, I changed all slides to use only fonts that I knew to be on my colleague’s PC. However, when I looked under the “Contents” tab of the resulting Powerpoint file’s “Properties” info, I discovered that Powerpoint was listing all the fonts that had been in the original Keynote file but that I had long since changed to Arial and Arial Narrow. Checking through the Powerpoint file slide by slide confirmed that the original fonts do not appear. Again, it appears that Keynote is storing obsolete information.
MY QUESTION: I am wondering if what I discovered today about Keynote’s “elephant memory” is indicating a bug of some sort, and if so, is there a reasonable work-around for end users that will enable us to avoid having files bloated with obsolete data.
Also, I am wondering if this storing of obsolete file data could be related to the ”missing file” error reports and Keynote crashes that others have noted in this forum and that I addressed in my previous post. The solution I had discovered was a file level work-around, but the question remained as to what had brought it on.
BTW, this is with Keynote 3.0.0 because I reinstalled Keynote recently thinking that this procedure might resolve the crashing problem described in my previous post to this forum; the reinstall didn’t, but the problem was solved at a file level in the manner described in my previous post. Now that I finally have time tonight to upgrade again to Keynote 3.02, when I run Software Update expecting to see the Keynote 3.02 upgrade listed, it’s not there. Hmmmmm.… I know I can get it from Apple’s download site but since the site lists two downloads (3.0.1v2 and 3.0.2), I thought it’d be better to let software update manage this process. Now I’m not so sure.

Thanks, dook and Kyn. Not only does that seem to resolve the issues, but deleting unused master slides dramatically drops the size of the exported presentation (e.g. to 20%).
I wish the Apple Keynote team would provide a way to more intelligently delete unused themes so as to make it easier to email presentations. It seems to me that theere should be a setting available in the export process where one could do this. The only way I could see to do it was one master slide at a time. Please tell me if I am missing something here.
I also wish we could export just a range of slides, e.g. from # to #, or slides selected in the Navigator/sorter/organizer.

  • Is it possible to burn a data DVD without numbered folders?

In iTunes I have a playlist sorted on Album by Artist with the intent of getting folders for each Artist, inside of which would I expect to have Albums when I get this to DVD-R, which our Acura MDX can read & play and display ID3 tags.
Problem is every folder on the burned media is preceeded by a number. I want the DVD-R to NOT have this since I can use the hands free selection knob which 'speaks' the folder names, but with numbers it's anoying since every album reads out "001 U2, 002 Kings of Leon...etc, etc"
I have a hunch that this only works for MP3 CD media, not DVD, as when I select MP3 CD iTunes seems to want me to create a data DVD.
    Help! TXS!

I am not sure I understand your question... Premiere Elements is a video editing program, with disc output being a MOVIE DVD or BluRay
I think you need to use a different product to write computer files to a DATA disc
For Windows, use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Read http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1322583 for notes on installing Imgburn WITHOUT any toolbar add-ons

  • Making Data DVD from iMovie HD (5)

    HELP!!!
I need to make a data DVD of my iMovie project to send to a stock-footage company. Anybody know EXACTLY how to do this? I'm using Toast 7. Thanks for your help.--Porter

in your o.p. you said to make a data DVD of my iMovie project to send to a stock-footage company... my guess was, you need a "universal" standard/very little companies support "Mac only"... in the data-disk options of Toast, you can choose many formats, "Mac" too...
    reading your second post...
my guess is, you try to do a "data spanning" to continue on subsequent discs, correct...? use/read "Help" of Toast7...
... where is the Quicktime of my iMovie HD (5) project?
    wherever you've stored it
there's the socalled "ref.mov" within the project's file (that with a star); in iMHD, this file isn't a folder anymore, but a "package"; simply ctrl-click on it, choose from menu "show package content"... beware: any "fumble" of movie.pkg can distroy whole project.
    BUT!
as said, that is just a ref.mov; Toast can create a videoDisk (the ref.mov "collects" all need video+audio; a ref-mov is just an "alias"; it is just <500kB = not the video/movie itself!); but - to my knowledge - is not able to create a data-disk (=movie.dv) from a ref.mov
if you need a movie, you need to create one by export/share from within iM, choose Quicktime/Full Quality... huge files: 1h = ~13GB...

  • Compressing Large .Mov Files to Data DVD

Hello everyone. I was looking for some advice on how best to compress the HD footage of a wedding I did, onto Data DVD's, so that if the family would ever want to do anything with the footage, they would be able to access it. I am aware that in compressing it, there is a loss of quality but It would be overkill to have them buy a hard drive and all that. I'm not overly worried about the quality being HD in the raw footage because I already have the best parts on the finished Wedding DVD. My question is, what format do I compress it to? I want to do in .MOV because I feel that it be the most universal and highest quality in years to come, but how do I get a 70 GB HD File down to under 4 gigs for the disc? I also want the audio and video file to be linked if possible. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I'm in a similar situation. My first project worked fine, but now I have a problem with my second project.
So far I've just been doing weddings in SD but I wanted to start experimenting with HD and so borrowed a Panasonic HS700 video camera to use for the stationary wide angle shot. One of the couples I dealt with this summer have a computer hooked up to their HDTV, so I gave them a DVD data disk with the 1920 x 1020 HD footage of the ceremony, reception speeches, and first few dances: a total of 96 minutes that used up 3.3 GB of data. This works out to about 0.58 MB/sec. The quality is fairly soft, but that actually helped reduce some of the graininess from a low-lighted hall. Quite adequate quality under the circumstances and it fit on a regular DVD.
I was encouraged by this so thought I would do it again on the next wedding. Using the exact same custom setting I had made in Compressor, I encoded the 39 minute ceremony but this time it used up 7 GB (2.94 MB/sec) which doesn't fit on a regular DVD. The only difference in the footage is it was an outdoor ceremony on a sunny day, so the palette of colors is much more varied than the dingy hall of the first wedding (thinking back to the days when I was concerned about the size of jpegs). But it was an essentially static scene, so why would it take up 5 times the memory space?
A cheap alternative in this case would be an 8GB USB drive, but for future reference, I'd like to know why the difference between the two projects.
Here are the settings: I basically took an H.264 preset and lowered the Quality from High to Medium (don't know what bit rate that represents - not sure what the numbers in the last few lines mean).
Name: H.264 Medium Quality with AAC

    DATE
    DOC_NO

OK...so what we NEED...is a Combined, SINGLE RECORD Audit Report type query.
The resulting query should show, based on the Data from above, the SINGLE LINE represented in the Attached Spreadsheet.
NOTE...what's important to point out here..is that ONLY the 'CASH' Tender gets "summed"...EACH INDIVIDUAL Credit Card record MUST have its own Field...as represented in the corresponding Columns of the Spreadsheet (i.e. PMT_TYP_1, AMT_1, PMT_TYP_2,
    AMT_2, and so forth).
PLEASE HELP!  Any suggestions/advice would be most appreciated!
    Thank You!...Mark

I would not do this in SQL if I could possibly avoid it.  Instead do it in the front end.
If you must do it in SQL, this is a dynamic pivot on multiple columns.  Naomi Nosonovsky has a blog at
http://blogs.lessthandot.com/index.php/DataMgmt/DataDesign/dynamic-pivot-on-multiple-columns/ on how to do that.  Look especially at her second example using the claims table.  Of course, you must do some manipulation even before you do the multi-column
pivot, since you must first combine all the cash entries.
So one way to do it would be to build a temp table with all the entries you have except the cash entries combined into one payment sequence number.  To do that you may need specifications that are not clear to me from what you have given us.  For
example, if PMT SEQ 1 is VISA,  PMT SEQ 2 is CASH, PMT SEQ 3 is VISA, PMT SEQ 4 is CASH, and PMT SEQ 5 is VISA, you want to combine the two cash payments.  So they become PMT SEQ 2?  If so, what happens to PMT SEQ 4 - is it left N/A or does
PMT SEQ 5 become PMT SEQ 4?
But once you have this temp table with the cash payments combined in the algorithm you need, then you can use Naomi's method to do the multi-column pivot.  Note that Naomi uses the code
    FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS
    WHERE TABLE_Name = 'Claims'
to get the column names from the permanent table Claims.  To get the column names from a temp table use code like the following.  To find the column names in a temp table named #MyTempTable, do
    From tempdb.sys.columns
    Where object_id = OBJECT_ID('#MyTempTable')
But as I say, if feasible, I would do this in the front end, not in SQL.  T-SQL is a very good language for storing and retrieving data, not so good at formatting it.

  • How to bring footage from my DVD into FCP

    Hi,
I REALLY need some help! I edited my film in FCP and burned in DVDSP, the same goes for the raw footage. They are both now on a DVD. My problem is that I let my friend borrow the raw footage tapes (bad mistake I know!) and now he cannot find the tapes. So I want to know if it is possible to take the raw footage back off the DVD without loosing any quality, and to bring it back into FCP? Thanks SO much for the help!

Without losing ANY quality? Sorry, quality was lost when you encoded for DVD. More quality will be lost when you rip the footage off the DVD, and more lost again when you encode again for DVD.
Sorry bud. Gotta press your friend more.

  • Since 10.4.4 (10.4.5) - i can not burn Data-DVDs anymore...

    System: iMac G4, 1GHz, 1GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.4.5, 4x SuperDrive (SONY DVD RW DW-U10A)
    Dear Apple Support,
since Mac OS X 10.4.4 (same with 10.4.5) i can not burn a Data DVD-RW anymore. It is so annoying. I want to burn my backup on a DVD-RW with the Burn Folders in Mac OS X. it is not possible.
The Finder burn dialog hangs at the "ending burning process". It is so annoying.
It's not possible to erase this "half burned" DVD-RW too! So I have here a lot of destroyed DVD-RWs around me...
The burning of DVD-RWs is a problem since 10.4.0 here on my machine. With 10.4.3 it was half o.k. ... But since 10.4.4 (10.4.5) nothing works anymore.
Your product "Mac OS X Tiger" is nearly one year in the market. And burning a Data-DVD is not a exotical thing. It is a essential feature of a Operating System today. So what are you doing in your Test-Labs?
I am sitting here since 1 year with an Operating System from Apple an it doesn't works in the essential features.
Whats about your slogan "It just works"?
What happens with the quality of Apple?
Under 10.3.9 Panther i can burn everything. It absolutly no problem there.
So i don't understand what are you doing with Tiger?
    It's so annoying!
    Regards
    Roessner

  • Burning a MUSIC DVD Possible?

Is is possible in iTunes to burn a MUSIC DVD that will play in any DVD Player? Burning a MUSIC CD works fine but I would like to use a DVD because of the greater capacity. The only instructions I've found are how to burn a DATA DVD - for back-up I guess, and playing in some computers. I would really appreciate knowing if this is possible and, if so, how it can be done. Thank you very much.

You cannot create an audio DVD.
Many, many DVD players will play AAC and MP3 files on a data DVD.

  • Data DVDs Not Mounting

    Hi there -
My Power Mac tower is now suddenly refusing to mount my data DVDs - all are discs of photos and other non-video files. All of these discs were burned on this machine. And all are DVD-R's, and different brands of discs.
Is this possibly an issue with my version of Tiger? (I'm on 10.4.11) I have been on this version for a while, and I can't say when this problem would have first started -- I don't think I've tried to read these discs in months.
Anyone have any thoughts that might help?
    Thanks!
    Tracey

Hi Tracey, and a warm welcome to the forums!
It may very well be the burner going out, & the CD & DVD parts use different lasers, as well as Reading & Writing using different circuits & voltages.
What happens? Do they get ejected? Are they seen if you open Disk Utility?
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.

  • When I try to burn a music CD, it insists I am burning a data DVD

When I select a playlist and tell it to burn the playlist the disc as an Audio CD, I get the following message:
"You have inserted a blank DVD but originally selected a CD format. Are you sure you wish to create a data DVD instead?"
Since I asked it to create an audio CD and NOT a data DVD, I have no idea what to do. I simply want to play these files from the CD player.
Any ideas? Is it possible the format of the files (MP3) is to blame?
Note I have never figured out how to create a CD that will play in my normal, several-generations-old CD player.
    Thanks.
    -Adam-

"You have inserted a blank DVD but originally selected a CD format. Are you sure you wish to create a data DVD instead?"
    The message is crystal clear.
YOU CANNOT (not no way, not no how) create a MUSIC CD with a DVD. It's a completely DIFFERENT disc format.
If you want to burn a Music CD, you MUST USE a blank CD to do it.

  • Data dvd not recognized

    Hi
    Wonder if anyone can help...
I have recently had a show-reel put together and they have sent me a copy on a data dvd with AVI and MOV files on it. This is so I can burn it and upload it to websites etc.
When I load the disk it doesn't seem to be recognized. There is no icon on the desk top but The iDVD application does automatically open up though, however I can't find the files anywhere.
I have looked in disk utilities and the disk is listed but it wont let me verify it.
Does anyone have any ideas about why this might be and what I can do it about it.
I want to try and burn a couple of copies so any help would be great.
    Thanks

Thanks for confirming that Import is correct.
When you say the Capture Scratch folders only hold captured material, does that include Imported material? And if so, when I look in the Capture Scratch folder and see not QT files (as I have seen in the handful of previous projects I have attempted) but small "FCE document files" then I do have some kind of problem, right? I'm just trying to figure out where to start in understanding this, and it seemed to me the external hard drive source was the new variable here; that maybe there was something I had missed in terms of what was required when using the XHD as a source instead of my own camera capture. If that is not the case-- that is, if a QT file is the same whether brought to the system through Capture or found on an HD and imported-- then I have to figure out what I did to screw up the Capture Scratch function. I have not done any render effects. I'm just setting up. I've not done much of this and none at all recently, so operator error is certainly possible. I'll reproduce the export and see if I can refine the settings. Thanks for your patience and thoughtful assistance.

  • Data DVD's in Leopard

I have been having issues with Data DVD's in Leopard. They show up as blank even though I know they are burned. I have tried them on other machines with Tiger and even PC's and the discs show up fine. I was hoping the 10.5.2 update would fix but no luck. Anybody know what's going on?

A few more details, my superdrive is Matashita UJ 85J. All other discs appear to be recognized except data DVD's. These DVD's were burned in 10.4 with the same drive using Toast. Can't find any support at Panasonic for Matashita drives. From all the posts on this I see I'm not the only one w the problem. Again, has anyone heard about any fixes or possible solutions other than using another computer and tranferring files to an external drive. From what I have read Apple doesn't seemed too concerned as no one seems to have a definitive answer let alone cause of the problem.

  • 1080p HD footage to SD DVD discs

Not sure if this goes in Final Cut, Compressor or DVD Studio Pro. So I'll just post it here and someone can move it if it's the wrong spot. Second off, I'm real tired. Too much editing.
I swear I go through this cycle over and over again.
I'm trying to get the highest quality output from 1080 footage on a standard DVD. I followed Ken Stone's guide (http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/hd_dvds_on_sd_dvdsyoung.html), but to no avail. I just got the "Playback feature may not be available on this Disc" error when I put the DVD in the DVD player..
So here's my setup, and what I've tried.
Exported my FCP timeline to Compressor
    Compressed to a 10.3 mbps h.264 file
Took that to DVD Studio Pro on an HD DVD project (I think that's the problem, given it's a standard DVD).
But when I tried putting the h.264 file in a SD DVD project in DVDSP, it won't accept the file. Hmmm...
So should I use compressor to get an mpeg-2 and burn the mpeg-2 in a SD DVD project in DVDSP? And is that the highest quality you can get when you go from 1080 footage to a standard DVD?
    Thanks!

Tell them to get an Apple TV2 and stream the content from their home computer. All you need to deliver at that point is the m4v file at 720p. You can ship it on a data DVD.
Around 2000 we purchased a Sony 300 disk CD carousel player. As we purchased new disks or were given them by artist friends, we also put the material into an iTunes library. As the years went on we added airport expresses to connect all the stereos in the house and outbuildings (4) into one network. The practical result of this is the Sony CD player has not been turned on in 2 or 3 years.
The same thing is going to happen with video content. There are internet based delivery systems in place already that work and will only become more robust with time.
The audio/video server will be (if it isn't already) the core of the residential entertainment experience. Blu-Ray is not really part of that scenario. I really don't believe it will last all that long. Apple has taken the convergence path and done much to make it happen. They are getting it right.
