Storing important financial and legal stuff

I want to store wills, trusts, life insurance policies, websites, passwords and credit cards and their numbers on my MacBook Pro and then back all this up to my external hard drive that I will keep at a separate location. Is it safe to do so, and what is the best program or method to for doing this? I've done some research on it, but I am not a computer whiz and some of the terminology I have found is a little difficult for me. If this is a good idea, would someone please tell me how to do it or where I can get something to read that will make the process easy to understand.

The problem with the scenario is in case of fire or disaster, your backup is in the same location as the system you want to backup.
In the event of a fire (or flood), what are the odds of an external drive will work after hundreds of gallons of water have doused it?
A good gun safe will prevent against theft and fire, but in the event of a flood, is not waterproof. Nor is a good gun safe cheap.
Document size fire and water resistant boxes are available at a reasonable price, but are small enough to be easily (stolen) carried away.
To that end, the best route would be to put/store you backup media in a safety deposit box at your bank, or something along that line, and remember to update the media as the documents change.
You may also consider keeping the data in a common format, such as pdf. The spiffy program you use today to create a data file may not be available (or even work) on the os and machine of choice a few years from now.
(proof of concept: try opening a native format macintax 1998 tax return on a 10.6.4 based machine, or even a filemaker 5 file - you know, the one you used to create you home inventory database )

    yes and no!
using the intended Import from Camera routines, iM converts automatically in its very own AppleIntermediateCodec. so, answer is yes.
    but …
    a) Apple claims , aic is non-lossy intermediate codec. working with proRes in FCPX taught me, there are even less non-lossy-ness codecs
    b) iM offers an Archive feature, which is basically a simple Finder/copy operation which 'clones' your SDcards content into some folder on your harddrive; e.g. you can later use these untouched  'raws' in another editor such as FCPX. so, answer is no.
    c) when you 'override' the import routines by manually re-wrapping mts into a mov container, iM handles the 'native' h264s ... so, answer is no.
    d) adding any effect, transition etc. reduces any interlaced source to 540p. (if you're working with 720p source, res is kept) … so, answer is yes. or, in 720p case, no.
    < Johnny Depp's voice >… savvy?
Does iMovie support HD 1080p @ 60 fps?
    via Import from Camera? No.
via re-wrapped mts>>mov? I was told yes, some say no.
one thing to be kept in mind when talking about these 'issues':
iM, this 12€, is meant as a CONSUMER toy tool.
    it supports AVCHD vers1 (=no 1080/60p, no >24Mbps, no 3D).
fingers crossed, we'll see soon some iM/QT/FCPX update for support of AVCHD v2 ........
the main consumer devices are within the specs, iM supports.
using professional equipments makes usage of professional software (FCPX, AP) optional.
    sorry for lengthy answer.

After this you will have the option to restore your contacts and other settins.  The question is will it restore my first phones info?  I am hesitant to delete anything  lol.

No. If you made your backup to iCloud, iTunes will not restore from an iCloud backup. See:

  • How do you import media and metadata from Windows Photo Gallery database?

How do you import videos and photos and their metadata from a Windows Photo Gallery database into the Elements Organizer, especially metadata that is only contained in the Photo Gallery database file (pictures.pd6) and not embedded in the video and photo media files themselves?
And when you import the metadata into Organizer, do you get all of these available elements?

    Geotags
Also, if the media files in Organizer are ever moved to another PC, is there a way to migrate all of the Organizer's metadata with the files to use with another instance of Premiere Elements?

OK.  I think we're getting close to the answer.
The reason I'm asking about this is because for Photo Gallery, media files can NEVER be moved without losing all database metadata.        I'm sorry I didn't know this when I started with Photo Gallery and I think I've learned an important lesson:  Be sure you can move your work BEFORE you start.
So, to clarify Organizer's behavior, let me ask the question another way.  Let's say that in a few years, after I've added tags, people, places, etc. to hundreds of media files in Organizer, I decide to get a new PC.   When I move all that stuff to my new petabyte drive on the new PC, do we know if Premiere Elements Organizer on the new PC would be able to read the original Organizer's metadata?

  • I have a password problem. After importing data and settings from one MacBook Pro to a new one, I have to put my iCloud password in when re-starting, but the password from the old computer in when waking the computer from sleep.

I have a password problem. After importing data and settings from one MacBook Pro to a new one, I have to put my iCloud password in when re-starting the new computer, but the password from the old computer in when waking the computer from sleep. I want to use my iCloud password on both computers consistently. How can I fix this?

The only other place to change a password for the computer login is in Users & Groups preferences. But I don't really know enough here to fix your problem. You can try fixing the keychain:
iCloud- Frequently asked questions about iCloud Keychain
    Tutorial: Resolving Keychain Issues
If you can't access your keychain, or forget your password If you can't get into your keychain file because you've forgotten your password or the keychain file appears to be corrupt, there are a couple of options.
First, if you've forgotten your password, you can use the "Keychain First Aid" utility to make the keychain password the same as the login password. This can be accomplished via the following process:
      1. Open Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
      2. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Preferences"
      3. Click the "First Aid" tab
      4. Make sure the "Synchronize login keychain password" box is checked
      5. Close the Preferences window
      6. Go to the "Keychain Access" menu and select "Keychain First Aid"
      7. Enter your username and password
      8. Click the "Repair" button
The second option is to completely delete your keychain then recreate it. This routine is useful if your keychain appears to be corrupt or otherwise inaccessible. This can be accomplished as follows:
      1. Launch Keychain Access (located in Applications/Utilities)
      2. Click "Show Keychains" in the lower-left corner of the window.
      3. Select the problematic keychain from the left-hand pane.
      4. Navigate to the "File" menu and select "Delete Keychain '(name of keychain)'"
      5. Check all options for deletion and press "OK"
      6. Create a new keychain by going to the "File" menu, then "New" and selecting
          "New Keychain"
      7. You can now make this keychain your default if you desire by selecting it, then
going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make '(name of keychain)' Default"
Login as root and perform repair In some cases, problems with keychains can only be resolved when logged in as the root user.
First, you want to enable the root user:
      1. OS X Mountain Lion: Enable and disable the root user
      2. OS X Lion: Enable and disable the root user
      3. Mac OS X 10.6: Enabling the root user
      4. Enabling and using the "root" user in Mac OS X
After enabling the root user, and logging in under this account, again open Keychain Access. First attempt repairs using Keychain First Aid, and failing that, delete then recreate the keychain as described above while logged in as root.
Persistently asked for stored passwords If you are persistently asked for passwords in various applications that you have specified should be remembered in a keychain, your "login" keychain may not be active for one reason or another.
Navigate to ~/Library/Keychains/ (this is the Library folder inside your user's home folder). Find the file named "login.keychain" and double-click it.
Failing that, select the "login" keychain within the Keychain Access application and make sure it is the default keychain by going to the "File" menu and selecting "Make 'Login' Default"
Turn off Keychain synchronization in applications having problems If specific applications are experiencing issues when accessing password-protected material, the Keychain may be to blame.
The above comes from an article published on MacFixit.com.

  • Problem importing classes and beans

Hey there. Im having one major fustrating problem! When I code supporting classes and beans for my JSPs I get a code 500 internal server error when trying to import (via <%@ page import="class" %> and <jsp:useBean/>) Im storing my classes and beans in the WEB-INF folder and the calling JSPs are located in /ROOT/tests/8/jsp.jsp. Im using the following to import a class or bean:
    <%@ import="aClass" %>
Seen as tho its in the WEB-INF folder I won't have to explicitly refer to where the class is located, just the class name.
I never had this problem when I was using my hosting service. Its only on my localhost server in which I get the Internal Server error.
    Help appreciated, thx.
PS: Im quite new to JSP/Java Servlet.

    import (via <%@ page import="class" %> and
<jsp:useBean/>) Im storing my classes and beans in the
WEB-INF folder try put your class file in WEB-INF/classes.
or first put bean in the package, like WEB-INF/classes/packagename/beanclass
    in jsp page:
    <jsp:useBean id="Mybean" class="packagename.beanclass" scope="request" />
Question: is /ROOT a context entry in your server.xml?
Which JSP Container (version) you use? Maybe your localhost server's set up is different with your hosting.

  • Import photos and video into different folders

Hi, is there any way to import photos and videos into seperate folders?
I use lightroom to manage my photos and videos, but the videos are much larger so I prefer they are stored in a different location.
I can import them together and drag the photos to a new folder, but this does not create the same folder heirarchy as importing them would.
Currently I import once for photos and onece for videos, but I'd prefer to just "import"
    Thanks!

Why is the folder strukture based on the import date, and not on the Creation date? How can i setting this?

    What folder structure?
If you're referring to how Aperture stores the originals in a managed library then the answer is you can't change it.
If having the originals stored in a specific file structure is important to you you will need to switch to a referenced original setup.

  • "Don't import duplicates" and question about the Last Import folder

*THE CLIP IMPORTING (TO IMOVIE) PROCESS*
Ever since the last time I uploaded clips and made movies with them, I have shot new footage. I never erased the clips that were in the Sanyo VPC-HD2000A.
This morning I uploaded the clips to my iMovie '11, including image stabilization. (Bypassed iPhoto '11 completely, on purpose.)
What caused me concern while the clips were uploading is that there were no prompts about +"only new clips, no duplicates"+ to be imported. There was one set of options saying "Importing checked, or Import checked," but the problem was that I saw nowhere that any of the clips in the box (I will call it the Sanyo Box) could be checked. Selected, yes, but checked, no. I tried to select all of the newly shot footage, but that was impossible. It was only possible to select one clip at a time.
I did not interrupt the file transfer because I did so once last month and it caused me problems.
I ended up with 36 files uploaded and imported.
*THE EVENT LIBRARY LAST IMPORT FOLDER*
_In the iMovie '11 Events Library, the Last Import folder contains clips that were uploaded last month to iMovie. If I am to understand the label, "Last Import" does not mean, "And also stuff from a previous import."_
I realize that having duplicates of clips can be solved by deleting clips, but I really want to know what is going on and also what ought to be going on. Shouldn't the Last Import folder contain only those clips that are in the most recent upload?
And why was there no prompt for all duplicates to be disregarded and not imported?
Did I possibly bollix up the preferences in my Sanyo VPC-HD2000A and did I accidentally tell it not to ask whether or not I want to import duplicates?
I can see that someone could say, "Make sure you delete all old clips before you shoot new footage," but that is an "of course." I need to know what happens when you keep clips in the camera and want to import only the new clips.
    -L

    No.
In LR3 it would ALWAYS pick up the duplicates if I inserted a card I'd just imported.
With no change to my workflow I'm now having instances of the same files being imported multiple times.

  • How to import photos and videos from Android device?

    Hello
I just bought Photoshop Elements 11 recently and I'm trying to import photos and videos from my phone, Samsung Galaxy SIII, but having a little trouble.
When I go to "Import from Camera or Card Reader" option and choose my phone from the "Get photos from" drop down menu in "Source" section the "Photo downloader" finds
every single photo and/or video stored on the device and it's memory card but I'm trying to import only photos and/or videos I've shot my self with the phone, witch is kept
in an folder named DCIM, but I simply can't figure out how to so my question is:
How do I import photos and/or videos from my Android device?

Try clicking Advanced button (bottom left) in the downloader dialog. You should then be able to select and deselect thumbnails and import only the ones you give the checkmark.

  • Importing MPEG and MOV

i have been trying to import MPEG and MOV files to iMovie 08 without any success.
the movies i have already previously copied to my HD, or have been copied for me, so I am not copying them from any camera.
The funny thing is ... when i look into my iPhoto library from iMovie he does recognise the videos i have copied directly from my digital photo camera, but i can't just copy any MPEG or MOV files from any other location, previously copied, to my iMovie library.
Does anybody here have the same problem as me?

Does anybody here have the same problem as me?
Everyone will have this problem. It is the way iMovie '08 is currently programmed. The basic problem is that most users fail to realize that there are three distinct levels of support in QT based applications:
    1) Playback Support - This simply means a particular compresion format can be played in a QT application. E.g., MPEG2 video is not normally supported without the QT MPEG-2 component while MPEG1 and H.264/AAC files are both playback compatible as they are.
    2) Conversion Support - This means a file can be "properly" converted to another compression format. In this case, "muxed" formats like MPEG1 and MPEG2 (even with the QT MPEG2 component) cannot be converted to another compression format by QT applications and retain their audio content while H.264/AAC files can.
    3) Edit Support - This means that certain operations can be performed on the audio and/or video content at the frame level. QT applications can, for instance, segment the audio and video content of an H.264/AAC file at any frame but since "muxed" files like MPEG1 and MPEG2 files consist of "blocks" of audio data interspersed with "blocks" of video data in a single stream, segmenting a file at any point other than one where a "group" of such "blocks" ends/begins would mean the loss of many "frames worth" of either audio or video data. AVI has a similar problem. Since the "instances" of audio and video data mesh like the cogs of two wheels, segmenting an AVI always leaves a 1 frame deficit between the number audio frames and the number of video frames. (Ever wonder why you end up with that one "white" frame at the end of youe file?)
Now we come to the various types of QT based applications. Many, like iPhoto and iTunes don't really look at the files when they import them, so they are more than happy to import anything they can read and recognize. If a file can be played in the QT player, it can be played in both iPhoto and iTunes. On the other hand, some applications are a bit "picky" about what they will export. iTunes, for instance, will not export/sync a file it has imported if the target device cannot play it. iMovie '06 is also different, in that it will import anything it can convert even if it can't convert it properly -- i.e., an MPEG1 file will be converted to DV video but lose any audio that may have been contained in the file. iMovie '08 takes things to a new level. Since imported files are simply moved/copied to "Events" folders in their original compression format, iMovie '08 first checks to see if the files contain both audio and video data that can be edited at the frame level. If both cannot be edited at the frame level, then iMovie '08 will not allow you to import it. Camcorder devices, however, are handled differently. Since most content on tapeless models are not stored in a QT edit supported format, these files, as well as HDV, are converted to an intermediate codec (which can be edited) as part of the import process.
As to digital cameras, many manufacturers store their video clips in generic file containers. Just because a Kodak digital camera stores its data in an MOV file container, it does not mean bothe audio and video compressions formats can be edited in iMovie '08. Many Kodak models, for instance, store their video clips as MPEG4/µ-Law 2:1 files. Unfortunately, while the iMovie will accept the MPEG4 video, it doesn't like the µ-Law compressed audio. Same holds true for many Casio digital cameras which use Motion JPEG/DVI ADPCM comressed formats. Once again, iMovie has no problem with the Motion JPEG video content but refuses to accept the DVI ADPCM audio. Luckily, users have two options here. They can either convert both the audio and video to an iMovie '08 edit compatible compression format or simply convert the audio content and "re-merge" it with the original video for maximum quality. And, of course, MPEG1/2 "muxed" files or M2V files with unsupported audio compression formats must be converted for the reasons already mentioned above.

You can only purchase content from the store where your credit card is registered - and that credit card must be registered to a valid address in that country. I am afraid that you are restricted in what you can legally purchase from Apple.
Sometimes the restiction of content has to do with licensing rights and sometimes governments will restrict the content that Apple is allowed to sell in their countries.
