Storing iPhotos on external drive

Is there a good way to set up an iPhoto Library on my Time Capsule or external drive?

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Be sure to use a wired connection.   If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.

    My Mac crashed. I got a new hard drive. I reinstalled Lightroom. Fortunately ircats are stored on an external drive. How do I import all of the old catalogues from external drive into a new LR catalogue. I have done it before. It has just been many years and I can't recall how.

    If you had stored your catalog files on an external drive, then all you have to do is double-click on them to open them and use them.
    Or you could move them to the internal drive and double-click on them once the move is completed.
    To create a single catalog file from multiple ones, you could use File->Import from Another Catalog

  • Using software instruments that are stored on an external drive.

    I recently bought Logic 9. Doing a custom install, I stored the instrument library on an external disk thinking it would be easy to use the instruments at a later time. Now, however, when I create a software instrument track, I only see the basic exs instruments. I can't find any further help on how to use my full library of instruments stored on my external drive. This must be simple, but I can't figure out. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Logic looks at the Garageband library for these.
    You'll need to go in there and create an alias to where you've put your content, otherwise they won't show up in the Garageband instruments section.

  • External HDS/HLS storage: Invoking files stored on an external drive.

    Followed the following article to add an external drive to store our vod streams (article is no longer available):
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/flashmediaserver/devguide/WS0432746db30523c21e63e3d12eea2a8fc0 -8000.html#WS0432746db30523c21e63e3d12eea2a8fc0-7ffd
    FMS 4.5 Streaming HDS from non default location
    Connected an external hard drive to the server with the following folders on it (vod2 > media), so the path is:  G:\vod2\media. New video files are inside the last folder (media).
    1. Modified: rootinstall/conf/fms.ini: added a new parameter for HTTP and RTMP streaming: VOD_COMMON_DIR_2 = G:\vod2\media
    2. Modified: rootinstall/applications/vod/Application.xml: Added <StreamManager><VirtualDirectory><Streams>/vod2;${VOD_COMMON_DIR_2}</Streams>
    3. Modified HLS and HDS content storage in httpd.conf (copied and pasted under original settings): The location names are /hls-vod2 and /hds-vod2, correct?
    <Location /hls-vod2>
        HLSHttpStreamingEnabled true
        HLSMediaFileDuration 8000
        HttpStreamingContentPath "G:\vod2\media"
    </Location>
    <Location /hds-vod2>
        HttpStreamingJITPEnabled true
        HttpStreamingContentPath "G:\vod2\media"
        HttpStreamingJITConfAllowed true
        JitFmsDirPath ".."
        Options -Indexes FollowSymLinks
    </Location>
    If all of the above modifications are correct, what is the correct url to invoke the hds streams stored on this external drive through rtmp? The original instructions were not consistently clear about this. I have a file called 1.Test.mov in that folder. I've tried:
    rtmp://localhost/hds-vod2/mp4:1.Test.mov
    rtmp://localhost/hds-vod2/1.Test.mov
    rtmp://localhost/hds-vod2/1.Test.mov.f4m
    etc.
    http://localhost/hls-vod2/1.Test.mov.m3u8 Works for HLS
    http://localhost/hds-vod2/1.Test.mov.f4m Works too.
    I need the rtmp url so that I can make a .smil file for rtmp fallback, such as:
    smil>
      <head>
      <meta base="rtmp://localhost/hls-vod2/"/>
      </head>
      <body>
      <switch>
                <video src="mp4:1.Test_1500kbps.mov" system-bitrate="1500000" width="1920" height="1080" />
                <video src="mp4:1.Test_1200kbps.mov" system-bitrate="1500000" width="1920" height="1080" />
               <video src="mp4:1.Test_800kbps.mov" system-bitrate="1500000" width="1920" height="1080" />
      </switch>
        </body>
    </smil>
    Thanks

    All of Adobe's documentation says that files specified in the vod_common_dir can be streamed from both http and rtmp, but there is no specific mention of what the correct rtmp URL is for files stored on an additional hard drive. Here's what I did to get around this: FMS 3.5 can't connect to media on other drive
    1. HLS streaming:
        a. Modified: rootinstall/conf/fms.ini: added a new parameter for HTTP and RTMP streaming: VOD_COMMON_DIR_2 = G:\vod2\media
        b. Modified: rootinstall/applications/vod/Application.xml: Added <StreamManager><VirtualDirectory><Streams>/vod2;${VOD_COMMON_DIR_2}</Streams>
    2. RTMP streaming: Added the file path of the external storage in the virtual directory of the Application.xml file without specifying or naming the application.
        a. <Streams>/;G:\vod2\media</Streams>
        b. The rtmp for this follows the starndard URL convention: URL Syntax: [protocol]://[servername]/[application]/[codecID:][streamname][.extension]
        c. In my case, this would be: rtmp://localhost/vod/mp4:1.Test.mov
    It would be nice if this worked according to Adobe's documentation, and hopefully someone can chime in with the correct answer to the original question. If not, this gets rtmp and http streaming to work from the same external location (what vod_common_dir is supposed to be able to do).
    Thanks

  • Moving library stored on an external drive to another computer - Help!

    I am currently changing computers. Both are running Windows XP, both are running iTunes 8.0.2.20
    On the current computer I have all my music stored on an external drive named L:. I am going to move L: to the new computer and keep it named the same. I have exported my library on the first computer. Here is where I want to make sure I have it right, when I import the library on the new computer, since it will be reading from the same drive name, do I need to change anything else to make sure this goes smoothly?
    I find lots of instructions out there for moving from C: to C:, but can't find anything for a set up like I have.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sean

    Or:
    Copy the iTunes folder from the old computer to the same location in your user area on the new one.  Attach the external drive and start iTunes.  If you have put it in your Home > Music folder the application will automatically know to look for it there and becausse you are using the same library it will be configured to look for media on the external drive.

  • How do I save albums, events in tact from iPhoto to external drive to comply with iCloud limits? Thx

    How do I save albums, events in tact from iPhoto to external drive to comply with iClouds limits? (iMac Lion, need to remove 280gb of photos>

    Not sure if I understand correctly?
    Do you want to move 280 GB of photos from iPhoto on your Mac to an external hard drive?
    If that is the case, iCloud has nothing to do with it. You can move your iPhoto library to an external drive to free up space on your internal drive.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iPhoto/8.0/en/6331.html
    If that is not what you're trying to do, please rephrase your question. Thanks.

  • Linking Soundtrack Pro to audio files stored on an external drive

    FCP user but using SP for the first time. I have the large sized audio files stored on an external drive which at the moment I can't access from within SP. Just wondering the best way to link to the audio files?

    I actually use the 'save as' function that consolidates all the audio clips and move them onto a separate drive. I'm doing a lot of large projects that have more clips than are actually used. Consolidation means I can move and work on another machine. And in the end it's easier to archive this single directory of files. Works for me, especially because sometimes the audio sources are scattered in too many places on my system.

  • How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library

    How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library?  I have several 128 GB SSD's that I want to use to copy/backup all my iPhoto photographs for a permanent archive due to stability...but my iPhoto library is larger than the drives (about 234 GB) so it would require two of the SSD's...how best to get the original photos onto the SSD's?  I'm running Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6...thx.

    Terrence - Can you explain what you mean by data loss?  In the iPhoto Library?  Or on the copy?
    Larry - In what way is each photo "degraded"?  Quality?  Isn't it simply making an an exact copy, in this case a jpeg, as would happen if I dragged and dropped a different file type?  Is there another type of degradation?
    I am working on trying to create a correct backup as well (per your instructions) but I wanted to use this as a "put in a fireproof safe" archive on very small SSD's that would never have a mechanical hard drive problem (we've lost a couple over time so aren't real confident in their staying power)...I also recognize that I I won't have newer photos in this archive group but at least it would have 98% of our photos in another off-site location...at least that's the thought...
    Thx for your input and look forward to more in your reply...

  • How can I merge two iPhoto libraries stored on an external drive?

    Today I was in a One-to-One at the Apple Store.  I want to merge two i-Photo libraries into one.  One library is on my Air, the other is on my iMac.  Both libraries have been moved to an external drive.  When I try to move one onto the other, they won't go.  Yet I am certain that while at the store today, the person there started to merge them.  He did not need the library manager software in order to do so.  We stopped the merge in order to move on to another issue.  Now that I am home, I can't get the libraries to merge.  What am I failing to do?  Thanks!

    The only way to merge two libraryies is to use  iPhoto Library Manager which will merge two libraries and keep keywords, titles, faces, places, and other metadata intact.
    If one imports one library into another library every image file in the first library, originals, thumbnails, face files, etc,  get imported as an original photo. You will end up with a total mess.  DO NOT IMPORT ONE LIBRARY INTO ANOTHER LIBRARY!
    If you have backup copies of your libraries get them back and use iPhoto Library Manager to merge them.

  • Help!!!!! iPhoto 11 has ruined my photos stored on an external drive!

    I have been having numerous problems since upgrade to iPhoto 11.  I moved my library to an external SeaGate GoFlex Network drive for more space.  But I just added 22 pictures, got the wheel of death for every one. and then when I tried to find the library, it kept creating multiple iPhoto Libraries.  Only one of which has my current photos and the other has all my other photos.  How do I get this software to consolidate libraries and to remember that my library is on an external network drive?

    What format is the external drive? To operate with iPhoto it must be Mac OS extended (journaled)
    How is it connected? For succerss it must be a wired connection - not wireless
    How were you "trying to find" the library? looking for a library can not create one
    If the iPhoto library is on a properly formatted drive properly connected then having iPhoto use it as the default is simply to depress the option key and launch iPhoto and use the select library command

  • Storing iphoto library externally or cloud

    Hi
    I know this has been discussed in other topics but just wanted to be absolutely sure that i have not missed anything.
    The situation:
    I have a Macbook Air with 128 GB storage capacity but i have a 170 GB photo library. Currently i have the iPhoto library and pictures located on an physical external usb harddrive that i have to plug in every time i want to view or add photos in library.
    I am desperately looking for a solution that will "unplug" me from the need of using a wired external drive for my iphoto library needs, but after reading the forum this looks like an impossible task.
    The alternatives i have explored:
    1. NAS: a likely solution but from what i can hear it can be very slow to work with the pictures and using a wifi connection could corrupt the library
    2. Dropbox: would be even slower and could corrupt library
    This leaves me with only one final alternative, and that is buying a smaller compact USB powered hard disk (eg. g-drive), that i would still have to connect every time i want to add or view photos.
    Am i right that this would be the best way to store my iphoto library since i cannot store it on the mac itself?
    If anybody else have experices with storing and managing the iphoto library externally please share the specific posts or your experiences.
    Thank you!

    Storing the file on an external will work as good as on an internal.
    You can't run a Library from a NAS. iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.
    A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
    Dropbox doesn't work like you think it does. It still keeps a copy on the local disk, so you save no space at all.
    There is no solution to running a library from the cloud.
    One thing you might consider:
    Upgrade to Aperture. Run that in Referenced Mode - and store the master files (or originals) on a NAS. (The issues that arise with iPhoto in that configuration don't arise with Aperture as it has tools to reconnect to Masters that iPhoto lacks.)
    That means the real space eater - the Masters - are on the NAS. With Aperture you will need to connect to the NAS for editing images, but pretty much everything else can be done without the Masters.
    Worth a try. I'd ask for more details on the Aperture forum.

  • Iphoto on external drive--iphone download?

    I moved my iphoto to an external hard drive. How do I direct my iphone to recognize the new iphoto drive when trying to download photos to my iphone.

    If you have moved your iPhoto database to an external hard drive - with iPhoto on your computer's hard drive set up to access the iPhoto database on the external drive, you don't have to do anything. The only options you have under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences is sync or transfer photos from iPhoto, or select a folder on your computer's hard drive that contains photos. There is no option under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences to designate where your iPhoto database is stored - this is done with iPhoto.
