Storing MBP in colder Enviornment

I live in Minnesota so its cold during the winters. I have a room downstairs and i have an egress window next to my bed which is where i store my MacBook Pro. I store it in a Targus case and it feels cold whenever i take it out to use it, i haven't had any problems with it so far but im curious if there are problems with starting it up when its cold?

What those specs mean is that the machine itself should be above 50°F when you turn it on. If it's been stored at a lower temperature, it will need to warm up before you turn it on. In practice, that means you need to store it at 50° or higher if you'll want to use it on short notice, because you have no way of measuring its internal temperatures until after it's turned on. So put an accurate thermometer beside it wherever you store it tonight, and in the morning look at the thermometer to see how you did.
Of course when the temp gets down to -45° outside later in the winter, you'll probably have to store the computer somewhere other than under the window to keep it above 50°.

  • PHD syncing and OmniGraffle package files

I am having an issue where package files synced to the home directory are appearing empty at a later date.
This issue seems to be directly related to OmniGraffle documents, affecting anything that is a .graffle (OmniGraffle Document) or .gstencil (OmniGraffle Stencil) that are stored as packages. We are using OmniGraffle 5.2.1. I have the ability to save the documents as a flat file type, I am unsure of the stencils.
Our enviornment - clients are running on MacBook Pro's with OS 10.5.8. Servers are Mac OS Server 10.5.8. Home directories are stored in an xSAN enviornment (2.2). Users belong to a group (portable homes) in OD that manages the Mobility Preferences and PHD syncing.
I performed a test where I logged the user in, added a .graffle doc to their desktop, logged them out, restarted and logged back in. Upon login, the "outer shell" of the package was still there, but had no contents.
Below I have a few excerpts from the FileSyncAgent-verbose.log from the users system. The file I was monitoring was named "NetworkDiagramMaster-2010_vB.graffle"

This time, when checking the file on the desktop of the users system, the file was there, but there were no contents in the package.
The user has since logged out and left for the day, but I checked the server and for now, the file seems to be OK. It appears that when the person syncs later, the "blank" file is pushed from their system back up to the server. Then both files are blank.
I am not sure, but the phrase "Found 'empty' package job. Ignoring." appears a few times in the log. I think this may have something to do with the issue, but I am not sure how to fix it. I have many users and it is beginning to worry me that there may be other files which are not getting copied properly.
Has anyone out there run across this or have any ideas for a fix?

You need to ask the Dropbox people about that, but I'm pretty sure that it's like having an external drive and it can't sync that precisely. It will act just like dragging and dropping a file on an external drive and back up the whole thing each time.
For that kind of syncing you need an iDisk from Apple's MobileMe service. Certain note programs, like Yojimbo, are made with idisk syncing built in, but I don't think Devonthink supports that.

  • Frozen screens - iPod with dock connector

My ipod freezes up whenever it is disconnected from the computer. The Ok to disconnect doesn't go away. If I perform a reset, the apple logo doesn't disappear. I have restored my ipod many times to no avail. I can synch songs to it, and even play them off the ipod when its attatched to the computer if i use (gasp!) realplayer. I can put it in disk mode and hook it up to the computer, itunes seems to think the ipod is ok. I'm not gonna spend 250 bucks to fix this thing, can anyone help? It seems like it still works, it just hangs up on something.

I am having the same issue and was hoping that I might find a cure or the reason behind this prob. I have an ipod w/ dock connector, it works fine when in use with my inmotion speaker system (with ac, not sure if anything happens on battery), when I bring it to the car and use the ipod hooked up to car stereo using a aux jack on stereo, the ipod will play for 1,2,xx # of songs and then shut down. I do have a power source for the ipod in the car, using the 12v/cig lighter outlet which will powerup the 'pod, but creates a whine that is annoying. At first I thougt it might be the drastic change from use in a warm to cold enviornment?
Anyone with any ideas as to what is causing this??

You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

1: Software Update fully under the Apple menu.
2: Check the status of your plug-ins and update (works for all browsers) also install Firefox and see if your problems continue. You should always have at least two browsers on the machine just in case one fails.

  • Cold MBP, exhaust fan running full speed

    Hello,
My 3mo old MBP exhaust fan has started running full speed (6200rpm), no processes or heat are to blame.
iStat pro say's the fan is currently at 6196rpm, highest temp sensor is at 30 degrees C.
Process monitoring says kernel_task using 160% of my two cores (interrupts?), this is a cause or a effect.
Reseting SMC had no improvement (unsure if I've managed to do correctly). Appart from that the machine works, very slowly, noisy, and very cold on my laps.
I'm on a business trip, don't have the diagnostic CD with me...
Any ideas so I can at least work during this trip ?
Thanks for your help, and for these forums.

    Hello folks,
I'm in the same situation, the only difference is my hardware from 2006:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,2
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2,16 GHz
After running the ASD, I got this:
    +Temp Sensor - Palm rest L test 1 - Sensor Reads Within Operating Range.+
+-Check to ensure that sensor reads within operating range.+
    +ERROR - Unable to read sensor+
    +- T E S T F A I L E D -+
The sensor code is the same one from the post above: Ts0P.
So now, after looking for more than 4 hours on the internet, I couldn't find a clue.
What exactly is the location of this sensor?
Can someone please post a picture?
    How can i fix this?
    Thanks for everybody.

  • How to synchronise my iPod touch with my new MBP without loosing all info stored in iPod?

Hey everyone!!!... I have been using my desktop iMac since 2 years already. Ever since, I synchronise it with an iPod touch 4gen (64gb).
Recently I bought an iPad and a MacBook Pro retina. I have been reading all manuals and watched some tutorials at the support center from Apple, but it does not makes it clear my following questions:
    1. How to syncronise all 4 items (iMac, MBP, iPod and iPad) with the same information stored in iTunes, Pictures and Videos???
    2. I have an Apple ID, but i can not use it with all 4 devices, right?... should I create 4 different for each and the use the iCloud account?
    3. I also bought a Time Capsule 3TB, but I do not know if this helps or not with this matter.
Thank you all in advance, I am kind of lost with this, and I have them all new in the box, and I can't hardly wait to use them properly!!!
    Best regards!!!
    Oscar.

  • MBP Retina 15 - Fans always on and mac is cold

Hi, is it normal for the MBP Retina 15" fans to be constantly on at around 2000rpm, even when CPU is ~40C? With CPU activity at 1.5% they constantly on. Thanks.

2,000 rpm is the normal state for the fans - it's not high at all (mine can go up to 6,000+ rpms and I can hear them then).
Your fans are always going to be running and around 2,000 rpms is about as low as it gets.

  • Mbp battery care before storing laptop for 2 months : anything special I should do?

Do I just shut it down or should I empty 50% of the battery as if I were leaving for 5 months?
    Do I remove the battery?
    Thank you!

Apple recommends that you store the battery with a 50% charge. If you store a battery when it’s fully discharged, it could fall into a deep discharge state, which renders it incapable of holding any charge. Conversely, if you store it fully charged for an extended period of time, the battery may experience some loss of battery capacity, meaning it will have a shorter life. Be sure to store your notebook and battery at the proper temperature.

  • Video podcasts crashing MBP? Why so?

System: MBP 2.4GHz with Tiger v10.4.11 and the latest iTunes 7.6.1 and QuickTime 7.4.1
All media are stored on an external FW SATA HD.
Problem: Playing most video podcasts crash or freeze my MBP! Doesn't happen to music videos, TV shows and movies. Why is that so? Driving me nuts! Strangely, no issue with a Leopard system.
Tried: Reinstall iTunes, QuickTime and apply Mac OS X v10.4.11 combo update. Repair permission and run maintenance. The problem still persists.
    HELP?!

I've been researching this problem since February and still haven't found a fix. A similar problem has been reported by people in Second Life.
    I noticed in my case:
    - if I'm looking at the video podcast in the album artwork window there isn't a problem
    - if open it in a separate window and don't move my cursor over that window, I'm fine
    - if I move my cursor rapidly over the window and don't leave the cursor over it, it will freeze the video for about 20 seconds and then start again
    - if I move my cursor over the window and leave it there it, it will lock up the system and I can't Force Quit or do anything else but a cold boot (if I was hearing sound it will continue repeating the last sound until I power down).
So far what it looked like was a video driver issue. Something like the GeForce not handling Open GL or maybe a problem when it has to overlay the video play control on top of the video window.
This is my first Mac and I was very proud of its resilience but with this bug, I'm afraid to let people touch the thing and have them find out how easy it is to lock up the system.
So stmidnite, have you noticed that this happens only with video podcasts that are tagged as new? Does it happen even when your cursor isn't over the video window?

  • A key on keyboard won't work when cold

When my MacBook Pro is cold, the "a" key won't respond.  After the computer warms up, I have no further problems.  Any suggestions?

Just how cold? Your MBP has the following temperature guidelines:
    Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)
    Storage temperature: –13° to 113° F (–24° to 45° C)
Are you operating in an enviornment below 50ºF/10ºC?

  • MBP Retina or Powerful Ultrabook?

Hi, I've been a PC user all my life, but after working my way through the first iPod Nano, a couple iPod Touches, and now an iPad 2- I've grown to like the way Apple works. I'm finally at the point where I've decided to upgrade my 4-year old Future Shop sale Toshiba, which surprisingly has lasted me a good deal of time. However, I'm not a fan of the limited capabilities, the weight, and the fact that it very easily overheats (to nearly scalding temperatures), leading me to opt for my iPad most of the time. I'm a sucker for HD and quick boot-ups, so of course I fell in love with the MBP Retina when it was released. The only thing holding me back is the hefty price tag. Because of this, I began to research several ultrabooks and found that I could get the same specs (except for retina, but I'm fine with 1080p) and even a few bonus features (I would love a Blu-Ray drive and some accident-proof features) for half, or slightly-more-than-half of the price of the MBP. My favourite features of the MBP are the "little things"- fast bootup, magsafe, trackpad, and iCloud to work seamlessly with my iPad (which, i guess isn't really a "little thing"). I'm just not sure if these are worth the extra $1000 when I could just get an amazing PC.
I plan to use this computer in the following ways:
    - Web browsing/ social networking
    - Homework (university... of course)
    - Entertainment (play movies, TV shows, etc)
    - Some video and picture editing (I have a Sony camera which records AVCHD, which edits best on Sony Vegas)
    - Running language software (i.e. Rosetta Stone)
So anyway, I'm not a gamer or a hardcore video editor, but I would like to be able to do some editing and video playback with clarity and without lag. As such, I figure I really only need the i5, so the base model of the Retina is fine for me. But again, I could get a **** good computer with i5 for much less money than the Retina, so I'm looking for reasons to sway either way. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    tj

    Hmm...
'll readily admit, I'm a bit of an Apple head, so always say YEAH GO FOR IT.
    However,
I'd say be aware, if you aren't going to use the power, you may be better going for alternatives, but I'll give you a rundown of some pro's and cons for your usage.
    - Cold boots in 15 seconds flat
    - can play 4 1080p streams at once without lag or framerate drop
    - Photo editing on Aperture is excellent
    - Photostream means your photos are there almost instantly wirelessly (not with the camera of course)
    - Photoshop CS6 (when the retina patch is out) will look brilliant
    - I had a photo zoomed out to fill half the screen size, of a whole person, yet could still see individual hairs on the head.
    - Build, engineering, design and material quality unsurpassed in the industry (you cannot flex anywhere or make anything creak)
    - Logevity, just upgraded from a 2008 Air - which was still going strong with no visible wear or damage/scratches
-Power, good graphics chip, switchable for battery life
    - Video editing is amazing (on Final Cut Pro - which is Retina ready) you can veiw full 1080p with the interface still visible
    Cons:
    - Lag - on 'best for retina' its great, on 'More space' scaling, if you allow GFX chip switching, will cause serious lag - forcing the GeForce fixes this
    - Other laptops will be great for your needs, and cheaper, but may not last as long
    - The next generation in a year will likely iron out the lag issues
    - Most programs are not yet retina ready - meaning they look... well... very dodgy indeed
I would say the MacBook is a fantastic machine and you will not regret the purchase, it will last you a good 3-5 years and you will thoughoughly enjoy it.  It's an absolute joy to you and the trackpad and keyboard are brilliant.  The speakers are also great.
However, you will likely get a notebook more than good enough for your needs, as you said, for much less money.  If you can happily afford it - get the Mac, they are some of the finest computers money can buy.  If it's a stretch - get a **** good alternative, you'll enjoy it equally and get great performance and some extra money in the old pocket!
Hope this helped a bit anyway - if you have any questions, ask away, more than happy to help

  • MBP won't wake, is REALLY HOT, fans going full blast

This morning I made sure when I closed the lid on my MacBook Pro, that it went to sleep (pulsing sleep light). I found that this doesn't always happen right away, unlike the old Powerbooks. I then put it into my laptop bag, confident that it was fully hibernating.
When I arrived at work and pulled the MBP out of the bag, the sleep light was solid white, the laptop was really hot on all sides, and the fans were running hard. I opened the lid and there was no display, although I knew it wasn't sleeping because I could hit "caps lock" and it would toggle on/off. Apparently it had awaked while in my bag for some reason. The only way I could regain control was to hold down the power button and start from a "cold" boot. When I logged back in I could not find anything odd in /var/log/system.log during the time before the reboot.
My Energy Saver settings for "battery" mode are set to "Better Battery Life" so theoretically nothing should be able to externally wake the MBP. Bluetooth is Off. I have no idea then what caused it to wake up and flip out. This is the second time this has happened and I've been wary of its sleep behavior. Is there an updated SMC firmware for the 17" model yet?
This is really worrying because I could have left it in my bag for a lot longer and who knows, maybe it would have caught fire!

It happened again. I did a hard shutdown to keep it from really geting hot. After the boot, I checked the system.log. At the time which I suspect the interrupted sleep occured I saw this, which seemed to repeat a few times:

  • MBP turns off during boot

    Hello!
My mid-2010 MBP is having some issues. It is no longer under applecare. Last year, when it was still under applecare, I had a problem of the display going black many times per day while doing even simple tasks. I believe they replaced the logic board and everything worked just fine after that.
However, last night my laptop suddenly went black while viewing a PDF. I tried opening and closing the cover, nothing could get the screen back. At that time, the keyboard was still lit up and the caps lock button still worked (light would turn on and off when pressing).
    I did a hard-reset.
The laptop screen lit up like it was starting, and then died. Tried again, nothing. So, I waited about five minutes and tried again. The screen lit up, the apple appeared, and then the laptop died.
After many attempts, I have seen it do many different things. Sometimes it dies before the apple appears. Sometimes it dies after that, but before login screen. Sometimes it dies on the login screen. Usually the longer I wait, the further it will go - however, even when stone cold and not warm at all after waiting hours, it will still only run for ten minutes before it turns off. Sometimes if I can get all the way through startup, it will run for a minute, or five minutes, or ten minutes, but it always fails. Sometimes it turns completely off, but sometimes only the display goes black and the keyboard stays lit. I can even change the keyboard illumination up or down when this happens. Its about a 50/50 chance whether the display will die or the whole laptop will die. Whichever one it is, though, it still requires 10-15 minutes before I can try again, or the machine will just fail halfway through startup.
I have also tried starting into bootcamp. It worked for five minutes in Windows and then died.
I have tried booting up while holding shift, but it was taking a very long time for the progress bar at the bottom to fill, and halfway through the laptop shut down.
As I said at the beginning, the logic board is one year old.

After sitting for a day, I started up the laptop and made it all the way through login. I let the machine sit without touching anything for about twenty minutes, nothing happened.
I then opened Chrome, and as soon as I began typing into the search box, the entire computer shut down, and restarted by itself.
Halfway through restart, the screen turned black. I waited, and after a minute the keyboard lit up so I knew it was at the login screen, though I couldn't see anything. I typed the first letter of my name, pressed enter, typed my password, and pressed enter again.
I presume the computer is logged in and sitting at the desktop now...I have the laptop set up so that if I move the cursor to one corner, it puts the display to sleep. When I do this with the track pad, I can see the keyboard lights dim, then light back up again when I move the cursor back out of the corner.
Anyone have any suggestions? How can I get my screen back?

  • Keyboard / trackpad forces me to cold reboot

It seems to be happening now that every now and then the keyboard and/or trackpad will stop working either entirely or partially. The power button is never affected by this and the software seems to continue to run normally.
Either way it always requires me to force the machine off by holding the power button for 4 seconds. One time when it was just the keyboard that stopped working I rebooted it from the Apple menu and it didn't help. One time it even didn't work from boot up when I started it up after turning it off. It had to be off for 10 seconds.
Sometimes only the delete key and several other keys stop working, and then it seems that the keys type in different characters than are labeled because when this happens the machine doesn't accept my password. Also when this happens the caps lock key does not make the green light go on and off.
This was a simple nuisance until it happened just seconds of rebooting the MBP after it had just happened.
Also if I leave it on long enough when this happens, the keyboard will spazz out and act like the Z key is stuck down. So if a text field has focus it's like z is continually being put in there as if it's held down and it's impossible to stop it without cold shutting it down.
I also stopped hearing the Apple DONG on reboot this morning. The computer had been on all night because I was downloading some stuff, it was plugged in and on a flat surface. When I got up I folded it shut, which put it to sleep, and then put it in my bag to take with me to work.
When I got there I unfolded the screen and then it came out of sleep mode. THe blue light on the front that pulsates while it's sleeping started blinking steadily and nothing happened on the screen. I don't have the manual here so I dunno, I cold powered it off and booted up again, and that's when the DONG stopped sounding. All sound was fine once the software loaded.
Now, I had this application iTunes Track that I used to display the current playing song off to the bottom left of the screen. It's a PowerPC app. Since this hadn't ALWAYS happened I decided to turn it off, and then I rebooted it and held cmd, option, p and r to do the whole restoration thing whatever that does, and I heard the dong, and then it rebooted and I heard the dong again.
What I am HOPING is that this is some software issue that will be resolved in an update. I have already had to take back my MBP once due to constant kernel panics, and their hardware test (both the one on the Mac OS X DVD and the apple store's secret one that they use) did not find any problems at all. This, like the kernel panics did not happen until after I had the machine for a week or so.
I am getting no kernel panics whatsoever now btw.

Try a SMC reset and see if it resolves......Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
If not then try NVRAM reset and see if it works......How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
Also, try to go in recovery mode and repair the disk using disk utility......http://osxdaily.com/2012/02/08/repair-boot-disk-mac-os-x-disk-utilit/
If that doesn’t help either then try to do a Safe boot......OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? - Apple Support
Or else, unfortunately the last option would be genius bar if there is any trackpad hardware issue.
Hope I have been of any help to you......

  • New HD in MBP (2009)

    Hi Guys,
Was having some issues with my MBP (programs shutting down / crashing) so I decided to buy a new 750gb HD and install Mavericks.
Once I installed the new drive, and got to the desktop, the system started restarting itself... repeatedly! I would get the message: "The system had to restart, please press any key to continue" (along those lines).
I've taken the new drive back out, made sure it was a fresh install and have also checked the drive with Drive Genius, all of which returned no errors with the drive itself.
I managed to get the log from Console before the last crash. Can anyone help please?
