Storing movie files to play on AppleTV

I have a large amount of video files (movies and TV shows) that are clogging up my iMac's hard drive.  They are created to play on my new AppleTV.  Is there a way that I can store them on an external hard drive, erase them off my hard drive, but still be able to access them onto my AppleTV?  I can't figure out how iTunes can recognize another media folder.  Am I clueless or is this even possible?

Yes, but be advised that if your movie is a commercialy purchased movie, the DRM (Digital Rights Management) coding required by the studios, may make it almost impossible to copy and play on your iPad.

Panasonic .MOV files only play audio no video in Premiere Elements 11??? Not Working Help

It all depends on the codec the file uses, Karli.
What model of camcorder is this video coming from?
Are you working on a Mac or a PC? Have you got the latest version of Quicktime, per the program requirements? When you started your project, did you select the settings for a DSLR at 720p? This is a vital step since it will activate the components your computer will need to work with many of these types of files.
    BY THE WAY, KARLI--

This is not the problem. We are using quicktime on the pc's and the mac. I also tried to open the file on the pc with other programs and it doesn't recognize the file. The file opens fine on my mac but I cannot save it as a new file. It says that "the end of the file was reached." The recording was made in iShowU then edited in Quicktime Pro.

  • An mov file which play fine in quicktime on my mac mini will not play in quicktime on a windows 7 unit. Error 2048, quicktime does not understand this file. Any ideas as to why it works in mac version of quicktime and not windows version?

The .mov file sis downloaded from my Sony camera. It is not altered and plays fine on the Mac mini using QuickTime. It will not play on a Windows 7 unit using the latest version of Quicktime. Why would that be? Why will one version of QuickTime work and another not work?

Also make sure the file type is not of a DivX. That your camera supports. Which QT for Mac also supports, but the Windows version of QT does not support DivX, so you're not purchasing something for the Windows computer that is not needed?

  • Problems Playing .mov files in Play

    Hi All.
I have made a short movie from a LiveType template, and converted it into a regular Mov file, which I have subsequently placed into the first slide of a presentation. This is something I have been doing ever since Keynote came out. Now though, after a few Plays/presentations have run through, the movie stops and stutters and starts and stops. I have tried to find out whether this is a LiveType issue, a QT (latest upgrade) issue, and now Keynote. Whatever issue it is, the fault appears on ALL my Macs which are both Tiger and Leopard -powered - so I know it is not an OS X issue nor a machine issue.
Has anyone else come across this? I have done all the usual tricks and have even re-produced the movie file from scratch, which worked beautifully for the first few presentations, and has now decayed into bad form, just like all the others before it.
It really is quite frustrating so any thoughts from out there would be gratefully received...
    Cheers
    Chris

Hello all, it took me all morning but here is what I found out. When I have the quicktime movie in my last slide and the slideshow is set to loop then the quicktime movie plays for a couple seconds and then stops. If I deselect the loop feature, then it plays fine. So instead of having the video in the last slide I added another slide after it and guess what it works.

  • .mov files not playing

So I've transferred pictures and video from my iPhone 4s and 5 to my Windows based computer running Windows 7. I attempted to play the video's in WMP and it wouldn't play the .mov files. After a search, I downloaded QuickTime as the recommended player for .mov files. Now, the files open in QuickTime and display the video I'm about to play; however, when I play the video it plays then stops as if the video is only one frame. I used the movie inspector and it shows the following:
    Source: E:\iphoto\video0035.3gp
Format: Photo - Jpeg, 583x1036, millions
When I click on details for the video file this is what I see:
    Please help.

Hello, your attached screenshot doesn't load so I can't see what's on it. Anyway, maybe converting .mov file that you can't play fine is a good choice to try. If you decided to have a try, you can start off with the free trial version of iorgsoft video converter.

  • .mov files not playing properly in Premiere Pro

    Hey!
I'm new to setting up projects in Premiere, but I have the newest version (2014) of the software, and I'm having problems playing back files within the software. These are .mov files, taken on a Canon mark 3 primarily, and while some files play back fine, others black out the video or grab a random frame and hold it while the audio plays back smoothly. The clips play fine when I open in Quicktime.
I assume this is is a codec problem or something? I have no idea about codecs. Please help! I really appreciate it.
    Thank you.

I believe that those MOV files are using the H.264 CODEC. You will need to have that installed (comes with later versions of Apple's QT), but even then, might not work in PrPro 1.5. I just do not recall if it supported H.264.
For a bit more background on file formats, this ARTICLE might be useful. For a bit more on CODEC's in general, this ARTICLE might be useful.
Good luck, and hope that PrPro 1.5 does handle H.264.

  • IPhoto won't recognize *.MOV file for playing and for importing

My iPhoto is giving me an "unreadable file format" error on *.mov files after I upgraded to iPhoto '11.   I have problem with video files that were working in iPhoto before and on files trying to import from my iphone or from my camera.   I made new library and tried to import *.mov file to the new library to check if my library is corrupted.  I get same error message.   The *.mov file plays fine with quicktime when I import files using Preview to my computer.   I just cannot import new video to iPhoto and play videos from iPhoto.
How do I make iPhoto recognize the *.mov file again and make the video file play properly?  I miss my old iPhoto

    Henji,
have you used a maintainance application lately, that has cleaned some caches? Then check, if you still have the file "com.apple.xpchelper.cache"  in the System Library in the folder "/System/Library/Caches/".
If this file is missing, that might be the reason that you cannot play or import videos any longer. Then restore it from your backup, if you have a clone of your system.  ALJ posted a link to a copy of this file in another thread: Re: Import video to Aperture library on Mountain Lion

  • PSE 8 .mov files cannot play

Hello.  I just upgraded my PC to Win 7 64bit, clean install.  I then added Itunes / quicktime.  Then I installed PSE8 and restored my catelog from a backup.  All is well except I cannot play mov files within PSE8.  My point and shoot takes HD vid clips with the mov extention.  When I try to play the video in PSE8 a window pops up stating I need to install quicktime.  Prior to Win 7, I had Vista 64 bit - and no problems with PSE7 or 8.  They all played videos fine.  I have reinstalled quicktime several times, without success for playing the videos.  I can play the videos fine outside of PSE8.  Quicktime is set as the default player.  I am stumped and upset about this.  I searched this forum and the knowlege base.  I found someone else with a similar issue, but no solutions.  Any suggestions?
When I intalled itunes, there was a 32 bit version and a 64 bit version.  Would this matter?  I can't remember which version I had on the Vista 64 OS.
    Jason

    Solved:
Added PSE8 as an exception in the Windows DEP area.  Rebooted.  Now works fine.

  • Opening multiple movie files to play sequentially.

Currently, if I highlight several movie (e.g. .avi) files in a Finder window and then double-click on one of them, each of the files is opened in a separate QuickTime window and if I have "automatically play movies when opened" QuickTime preference set, then they all start playing simultaneously!
How do I change it so that opening multiple movie files results in them being played sequentially in a single window?
P.S. I have "Open movies in new players" preference is disabled.
P.P.S. For image files it all works correctly - they are opened in Preview and I get an option of starting a slideshow...

    Hi,
I'm not on a Mac at the moment to test, but I could have sworn you used to be able to open one movie, pause it and then drag and drop subsequent movies onto that window to append them to the end.
Give it a try. Sorry if I've been imagining things though

  • How to queue movie files to play after each other?

    Hi,
I have home movies that I want to watch continually. I'm sick and tired of clicking on each file and playing it. I'd like to queue a selection of movies and just let them run one after another.
HOW do I do this? Help please!!
    Thanks,
    Chris.

A web search hasn't revealed any immediate obvious answers, suggesting queueing is not a feature QT (maybe different in the Windows version).
I am only familiar with the cumbersome method as outlined in [http://www.ehow.com/how4453086present-multiple-movies-same-quicktime.html] where you copy (if only temporarily) multiple movies into one long movie.
Use something like http://niceplayer.net/ , or as I said, iTunes should be able to do this in a playlist since it is the .mov format.

  • Nikon D7000 mov file canot play RT with MPE

Please need help. My nikon D7000 mov file(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC) canot be played RT in MPE. my system specs is i7 2.8ghz, 12GB RAM, Geforce GTX 285, editing mode and presets is DSLR 1080p 23.98 which is same on D7000 file. MPE enabled. When i import the native file from camera, indeed i copied all file to hard drive which is also RAID0 configured, then import to the bin and when i place in the timeline it struggle to play RT just after 20sec. I have heard a lot about RT playback in MPE for DSLR files, where i am going wrong what is the way to have right workflow, i do not want to transcode the original file.

Hi, its PC on windows 7 64bit.
For an editor, the 1st requirement is RT playback of media. I have read from adobe, edit DSLR file natively and can edit RED 4K file with couple more layes.
But in my case an simple QT H.264 small size file is struggling to play.
HI Jim (For the record, hardware acceleration doesn't help at all with simple playback.  Only certain effects and such are accelerated.  The CPU is still the biggest factor in smooth playback with such heavily compressed files).
But this same file  plays back smoothly on windows media player, my step is to work on original file & avoid transcoding to maintain quality and time.
Well i say again for editor the 1st thing RT palyback is imp., i understand to render if i use FX or compositing.

  • Converting Aperture created .MOV files to play on DVD

When exporting digital video clips from Aperture, they're exported in .MOV format which, if burned to a DVD, will not play.  Is there a way to export video files from Aperture so that they will play on a DVD player, or is there a way to convert those .MOV files to a format that can play on a DVD?
    I'm using a 21.5" iMac running OS10.6.8 and Aperture 3.2.4.

How do you burn your DVD? The Finder's "Burn" will create a data DVD, not a video DVD. You need a burn program like iDVD or Burn to burn your video onto a video DVD.
See this paragraph 3.1 in this User Tip:
How to create a video-DVD? (Macs without iDVD): Apple Support Communities
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
