Storing my music photos, etc on a HDD connected to my router

I have all my music & photos on my macbook hard drive. I don't have the latest operating system so no time machine.
To release space on macbook I would like to get a portable HDD to connect to my router to store all the music & photos and then program iphoto & itunes to read the files from there rather than it's HDD.
My question is this:
- Can this be done?
- If yes, can anyone recommend a portable HDD for this? (NB - I am located in the UK)
Hope you can help.
D

We need more information:
What company made the router, and does the HDD have USB?

I have just made a clean instalation of Lion, with a bootable disk, and I planned to restore my files (music, photos, etc.), The installation run perfectly, but Lion doesn't find my backup files. So, I'm about to loose all of my iTunes library, work documents (I'm a lawyer!!), my kid's photos.... How can I restore my files?? Help!!

Since you seem to be using a new disk for Lion, Time Machine will consider previous backups to be for a "different" computer.  Try doing a control-click or click-and-hold on the Time Machine icon in the Dock, then choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disks".  This should allow Time Machine to see the previous backups.
In the worst case you should be able to open those Time Machine backups and copy your documents from there to your home folder.

i am sorry, i am new to mac plis

I would certainly back up everything to an external drive, preferable a bootable clone using CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! before installing Lion.
You shouldn't have to reinstall yopur apps though.

  • Got a new computer, but it's taking a very long time to upload my Apps, Music, Photos etc to the iTunes. How do i go about?

Hi, i just bought a new computer (Windows 7) and have been trying these past few days to sync my apps, music, photos and ibooks into the iTunes in my new computer but it takes hours and hours and never ends. Has this got something to do with the amount of apps and music? Also, my iTunes takes a few minutes to load whereas it used to be very fast on my old computer (also Windows 7). Any form of help is appreciated. Thanks!

    Firewire disk mode.
    Plug in a foirewire cable, most likely need a 6pin (400) to 9 pin(800).
on the older machine, boot it up, and hold down the t key
HDD should show up on the new computer.
If you havent booted up the new machine, you could run migration assistant whith the above steps to pull the data off.

  • HT201269 how can i get all my iphone apps music photos etc. onto my new computer?

My computer crashed and I now have a new one. I have downloaded itunes. When I connect my phone I don't have the sync option. Why? How do I get my music, apps, photos, etc onto itunes? Why is it not already there?

Do you have a backup of that computer?
Easiest way is to restore that backup to your new computer.
When I connect my phone I don't have the sync option. Why?
Because it is sync'd with the library on your old computer.
See this -> Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device

  • My First Mac: Best Way to Organise Data, Files, Music, Photos etc?

Just took the plunge after 12 years of using Windows. Got my Macbook 3 days ago.
My gorgeous new MacBook was set up by the non-English speaking guy in the Apple Shop here in Baku so I didn't get the benefit of using the Set Up Assistant.
I'm REALLY confused by all the different places which seem to be available for me to store my:
    - 25GB of music
    - 10GB of photos
    - 1GB of other documents etc.
Where is the recognised best place to store everything? - - In the "MacBook" folder?
    - In the "Macintosh Folder"?
Right now I have about 3 different folders all called "Music", and about 3 all called "Pictures".
When I open iPhoto for example it can't see my pictures. When I open iTunes it can't see my music. I guess I have put the files in the "wrong" folders.
I wont be using a network, and I'll be the only user of the computer.
Thanks for any advice for the newbie

  • Difference between "my" (music, photos, etc) and "shared" (music, etc).

I stream from iTunes, not sync.
I'd like to set the preferences so that the screen saver utilizes MY photos, not the Apple generic photos. When I try to change the setting, however, it says I have no "my photos". When I go to the photo tab, I see that that is true - my photos is empty. However, SHARED photos have all the photos I've designated for sharing. Obviously the same scenario is true for music. I guess I cannot use shared photos in the screen saver?
Is it because I'm streaming and not syncing that I can't show "my" photos? If so, can I first sync to establish a library of "my" photos, then switch to streaming without losing the sync'd photos? (I suspect not).
Sorry if its a dumb question. Thanks for help.

Correct, they need to be synced

Just set up a custom sync and only select only photos to sync - i.e. don't sync movies or tv shows etc, they will stream just the same.
The sync library (assuming tat's how it's set up) streams anything bot synced.

  • HT204053 Can I use iCloud to share data (music, photos, etc.) with my wife's apple ID as well as mine?

My wife and I have separate Apple IDs for our phones.  Is there a way to access photos taken in each device through iCloud without having to sync each device manually.  I would like to be able to share photos without having to sync each time.

You can share photos with your wife with iCloud's "Shared Photo Stream" option (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4379), but you cannot share music files between different Apple ID's.

  • HT1711 My laptop got restored so i lost all my music, photos, etc. Can I possibly transfer music from my iPhone to iTunes?

Is there any possible way I can transfer my music and photos from my iPhone to my now new iTunes which has nothing on it.
I dont want to lose my photos or music.
    There must be a way.
    Thanks for the help

    You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

  • HT201269 If my current ipod is broken, would i still be able to transfer music, photos, etc. to a new ipod?

I would like to transfer content from my old ipod to a new one, but my old ipod has a broken screen. The ipod is still functional but will not let me put in my passcode. I've already read about how I need to back up my old ipod before I transfer content to the new ipod, but as I have explained, I can't do that because I can't enter my passcode to get into my ipod. Would it still be possible though to transfer content from my old ipod to a new one? If anyone could help me with this that would be great.
    Thanks

If you have iCloud backup turned on, the iPod will automatically backup to iCloud one daily wihe charging an if it has an interent connection. Thus, it iCloud backup is on and the iPod is connected to an internet connection, charge the iPod and then restore from iCloud backup.
iCloud: Restore your iOS device from iCloud
Otherwise you  will have to restore from either an exiting iCloud or iTunes backup
