Storing PDF and other Docs.  Inside DB vs Outside

Part of our OLTP application allows users to store Statement Of Work as one of several different file formats. When it was first implemented years ago, we stored the file as a BLOB inside the DB. We did not have much use of this feature at first. It has now exploded and we are forced to rethink this discision. should we keep them in the DB or just a file location in the DB and the file on a SAN. The blob field is stored in its own table space and it has grown to over 9Gig. I would like to know how others handle such documents or if there are any White papers with best practices you can point me too.
Thanks
bj

My company has an application that keeps PDFs, HTML files, ASCII files, and JPEGs in the database as BLOBs, and we have customers with over 20 Gigs of BLOBs in it.
Unfortunately I'm more of an implementer than an actual database designer, and even if I did know the details of the design my company would probably get mad at me for posting them on a message board :), but what I can tell you from experience is that most of our customers wish we would store MORE of our documents in the database. We still have report layouts, chart definitions, print layouts etc. that are stored on a network drive and I can't tell you how many tonguelashings i get from customers that these aren't stored in a more centralized location.
So naturally there are pros and cons both ways but I can tell you without question that keeping large amounts of document data stored as BLOBs has been done.

  • PDF and other doc viewing

    The ability to view PDF (and other files) as email attachments is a good start, but I really need more.
    Especially with respect to PDF files, I want to be able to store and open these separately from Mail, have the iPhone remember the last page I was on for each document and provide some sort of jump to page feature.
    Also, for PDF files which have internal links, these should work...
    perhaps a "Docs" app like Photos that lets us sync documents with selected folders on our Mac...

    Email notoriously damages PDF files, so I'd recommend using a Dropbox or similar approach as standard.
    The causes of corruption can be very hard to track down and can include subtle incompatibilities between email programs, size limits, failure of email programs to treat PDFs as binary, and automatic processing of email, such as corporate signatures or antispam.

  • Viewing/Syncing PDF and Word Docs?

    I read before I bought my iPhone that it would have support for PDF and Word Docs. How do I view and store these docs? Since I can sync music and movie files, can I sync documents too?

    So I can store and view a 700MB movie, but not and 8kb text file? Are you kidding? I've tried emailing myself a PDF, but I can only view it in Mail's tiny vertical window. So far I have been unable to open ANY PDF on the Web. I get an error "Safari can not download this type of file."
    There is no way to sync/view a PDF like I sync/view Photos? Why include PDF support then implement it in the narrowest way imaginable? This phone just became useless in any type of business environment. It is unbelievable that on an 8 gig Phone I can't even store a PDF, Word, or TXT file. Looks like this phone is a $600 toy, not a device for a serious user.

  • I have 646 websites that have stored cookies and other data on my computer. How necessary is it to keep these stored files?  My thought is to delete them.  Input?

    Good Morning,
    I have 646 websites that have stored "cookies and other data" on my comupter.  How necessary is it to keep these??  My thought is to delete them.  Any advice?

    I have never encountered a site to which I couldn't log in again after trashing its cookie(s). If you use Firefox (Preferences), you can list exceptions of cookies you don't want removed (e.g., for startpage and duckduck searching, I keep startpage and duckduck cookies in order to keep those search settings) and those you never want to accept (I have all Google cookies blocked. Doesn't keep me from using Google search, images or maps, but if you belong to a Google group or run some  kind of Google program, that may be a problem.) Safari probably has some cookie manager extension available for that also.
    If you use Firefox, NoScript will effectively block all google tracking that occurs on mousedown.
    In your browser>Preferences, make sure you don't allow third party sites to store cookies.
    What's even more worrisome than ordinary cookies, are Flash cookies ("Local Shared Objects"), which are persistent cookies, including the "evercookie." They aren't stored in the browser.
    With Firefox, you can deal with this by using the Better Privacy Add-on, or see this post of mine, as modified by Kurt Lang.

  • Hp officejet pro 8610 prints solid black on scanned pdf and word doc pictures

    -HP Officejet Pro 8610
    -problem printing scanned pdf document and word doc. photos
    -My new HP Officejet Pro 8610 printed a newly scanned pdf document as an all black picture. I then printed a saved word documtent from my iMac which included a small picture. The document print was acceptable, but the picture was solid black. There were no error messages. These were, my initial tests, to check this new printer.

    Hey there @TM-10
    Welcome to the Community
    I read through your post about your new Officejet 8610 scanning a document to your computer and printing out all black. I have a couple ideas for you to try.
    Try the steps in this guide: Unexpected Scan Output Using HP Scan Application for HP Multifunction Printers When Using OS X v10.9...
    Press the Power button to turn on the product.
    With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
    Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    Wait at least 15 seconds.
    Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
    Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
    If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
    Ensure the printer is plugged in directly to the wall outlet, avoiding power bars and surge protectors. This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help.
    Good luck

  • Printing to PDF from existing PDFs and other MS programs for Mac

    I just purchased Adobe PDF Pack software online because it said it is required if you want the print to PDF function to work from an existing PDF, word or excel, ppt file. Now I don’t see that functionality. Am I missing something or was this software not the correct item to buy? My computer is a Mac OSX Version 10.6.8

    Hi there jaquib,
    With your Adobe PDF Pack subscription, you can convert files to PDF using the CreatePDF service, or convert PDF files to various formats (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and others) using the ExportPDF service.
    To get started, you log in to your account at https://cloud.acrobat.com and log in with your Adobe ID and password. The files you convert are stored online in your account, but you can download them to your computer as well.
    I hope that helps.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Email atachments: PDF and other

    I need to attach documents when I reply to email. The docs are PDF and text files sitting in a 3rd party app (air sharing, good reader, etc). So I go to there, copy the doc and try to paste it in the email. It doesn't work.
    My question is if this is because of Apple's sandboxing restrictions or just the apps are crap. If its the apps, then I will look for a good app. (If it is Apple's fault, then no more iOS things for me).
    Thanks

    Ok Cheers again for your input try67.
    I am a little surprised that it can't be done!

  • Wiki in pdf (and other format) , please

    Yes, i'm new to archlinux.
    But it's been a month that i installed "overlord" on my laptop and then on my PC.
    i found that the wiki is very helpful but i prefer to read it in pdf so i copy those selected pages and paste to OpenOffice, convert it to pdf and read them via pdf viewer on another computer(i did it while installing arch on my laptop and do the opposite while installing on that PC).
    Recently, i just know that there are some apps that can convert html page to pdf or else like "htmldoc" but it's not friendly enough for me though.
    And i might miss something else beside htmldoc but it could be a time cunsuming task to convert those things.
    So, is it possible for arch team to convert all topics to pdf that anyone can download them very easily and without any extra experience or effort?
    I know, the wiki is alwals dynamic and it's a hard work and boring to do such things but i think this could be a great help for everyone(especially who loves reading pdf docs).I got this idea when i was searching some infos in Gentoo and FreeBSD's official sites that i could choose lots of format to download any docs and they're very informative and polished though some of them are obsolete or outdated. Yeah, the arch's pdf docs should be in the similar way or better.
    If there's a better way to convert every single page to pdf, please tell me.
    For now i've got plenty of them already, but for a very newbie it's would be nice, really.
    And i think that's not easy to contribute the wiki myself while some might call me noob.
    So what's your suggestion?.

    Some time ago I wrote a little script to convert wiki to txt for the CD. As I'm using texinfo it was relatively easy to modify it to create pdfs. Like this.
    I can guarantee you that it will fail on some pages, but it should work well for most of them.
    You can find the script here
    extract both files into one dir and then run
    python wiki2pdf.py WIKIPAGETITLE
    Caveat: This requires LaTeX

  • Firefox 4 crashes when loading pdf and other sites unless I first open it in safe mode and then revert

    So firefox 4 crashes when opening in-browser pdfs and a whole host of other sites, even with no addons running.
    I've found a fix: start in safe mode, then close and open in normal mode. This always solves the problem.
    But '''why?''' What is causing this incredibly annoying problem. I went from happily browsing at high speeds (firefox 3.6) to suddenly finding myself propping my head on my arm, looking at a jammed firefox, trying not to go crazy, for about 2 minutes until it unjams (for pdfs - for the other sites it doesnt unjam) - and the pdf page ends up just black. God forbid I press F5 again lest I want to relive the experience.
    This only happens on my work laptop. It's a top of the line laptop. It connects via a remote VPN. I'm not sure if that's relevant but I'm trying to give as much info as possible.

    1. You have a pre-release Beta 1 version of what will become Firefox 4 in like 5 or 6 months. Unless you are intending to test it for flaws and report those flaws to help in the development process, don't use it.
    2. Did you create a new Profile for 4.0b1, and are you using that Profile with it? ''That isn't done automatically when you install 4.0b1, and those of us who have been doing the "testing" for many years consider a new Profile as the basis of doing out testing.''
    [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+Profiles]
    IMO, Mozilla is making a huge mistake by directly offering these beta versions to the general public.
    Also IMO. if you want to play with 4.0b1, use the Portable Firefox 4.0beta version to minimize any conflicts with a currently installed version of Firefox, and to eliminate the need for creating a new Profile for 4.0 Beta #:
    Download Firefox Portable Test to your hard drive and double click the '''FirefoxPortableTest_4.0_Beta_#_English.paf.exe''' file. The entire installation (including a new Profile for "Portable") will be self-contained in the \Program Files\FirefoxPortableTest\ folder and won't interfere with an "official" version that you already have installed. Your Profile will be in the \Program Files\FirefoxPortableTest\Data\profile\ folder.
    The "down side" is that Firefox Portable won't launch if any other version of Firefox is already running.

  • Pages 09 Are enterable forms possible? So that I can export to PDF and others can fill in that form and return to me?

    I want to create a membership form (PDF format) and put it on my website for potential members to download. Ideally they can enter their details in the PDF and return it to me via e-mail. How would I do this please?

    No, this capability does not exist in Pages.
    LibreOffice has a forms designer so that you can create in-line, fillable forms. You can then one-button export to PDF. The LibreOffice Writer Guide has an entire chapter assigned to Forms.

    any idea, how to store PDF and word document using oracle database.
    thanks

    The common approach is store as BLOB in database, use DBMS_LOB package to handle the loading and reading, sample script source asktom
    Also check this thread in Asktom
    SQL> create table demo

  • How do I get my data stored in iphone 4S  internal memory, which was stored via USB connected to PC? Able to access just DCIM files ie image files and other docs like PDF, word and exel are not showing up

    Please, help in retrieving my data stored in iphone 4s, which displays just DCIM folder when access from PC.

    You can only transfer contents back, if they are associated with a certain app that takes up documents. If you go to the sync pane for apps and check the lower list of apps, clicking them one by one and check if contents you need are showing on the right hand side.
    Other contants cannot be transferred back, especially synced pictures cannot be transferred back to the computer.

  • Binary Data to PDF and Word Doc

    All,
    We have requirement to open a PDF or DOC in a new window from a BAPI output structure. The field returned from the BAPI is a binary field. Following is the code that is implemented for this scenario.
    for(int i=0;i<wdcontext.nodeOutput().nodePtx_Drao().size();i++)
    IWDCachedWebResource resource = WDwebResource.getWebResource(wdcontext.nodeOutput().nodePtx_Drao().getPtx_DraoElementAt(i).getOrblk(), WdWebResourcetype.PDF);
    IWDWindow win = wdComponentAPI.getWindowManager().createNonModalExternalWindow(resource.getUrl(WDFileDownloadBehaviour.OPEN_PLACE.ordinal()), "test");
    win.open();
    The problem we are facing here is when we try to open the PDF it throws an error saying "File does not begin with '%PDF-'". If we try to open a word document by changing the resource type some junk values are coming.
    Has anyone come across this type of development issues?
    Appreciate all your replies and new inputs in this regard.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Nagarajan.

    Hi,
    I also tried with the same using the below code. Even I am getting the same error.
    byte[] test=new byte[9];test[0]=2;
    IWDCachedWebResource resource = WDWebResource.getWebResource(test,WDWebResourceType.PDF);
    When i tried the same code with other file type its working file.
    IWDCachedWebResource resource = WDWebResource.getWebResource(test,WDWebResourceType.DOC);
    From where are you getting this actual byte array? from R/3?. In internet if you search about this error we are getting the results like "The PDF file has a .mme extension rather than a .pdf extension".
    Note: This is not the problem with Window or LinkToURL ui elments.
    Posting this to give you an idea.

    Charan

  • Using CRX as Document Server for PDF and Office Docs

    Hi All,
    I my organization we have got lots of PDF , Word,PPT and video on stored on CQ server along with webpage. I am suggesting it to store webpages on CQ/AEM server and rest of the documents on CRX server and access those documents via Sling URL’s.
    Is anyone foreseeing any risk in this approach or should we store all documents in another AEM server. We just need to use indexing, ACL’s on these documents and my understanding is standalone CRX can do this job .
    Thanks,
    Manish

    Thanks for your response.
    Yes i mean separate CRX to store document high level architecture will be as below
    I have done the POC all working fine. By moving contents to another CRX server we will significantly reduce completion time of indexing, backup , garbage collector and tar optimization jobs on AEM server as a result we will improve performance and reliability. I am wondering how others companies are managing large CQ repository   in other organization.
