Storing Podcasts separate from Music
I would like to store my podcasts I subscribe to in a separate location than my itunes music. Is this possible?
somewhat possible...
If you tell iTunes not to manage your files (Preferences -> Advanced tab) and store your music files somewhere other than "My Music" (the default location), then your podcast subscriptions will continue to download in the My Music area.

Keeping spoken word separate from music--h
I have a Zen Microphoto, 8gb
--I have 2 "problems"
-I want to isolate my spoken word files from the music files so I dont get bits of spoken word when I do "shuffle", play all, random, etc.
-My spoken word wont play back in the correct order--the tracks are numbered correctly, it appears, but it orders them like so:
0
2
20
etc.
I tried making it 0, 02, in the explorer but it just shows, not 0.
Everything I have on my player was "tagged" with the Grace Note service thing when I put it on (I was pleasantly suprised it had the info for the 2 spoken word cd's!)
any suggestions appreciated!
cheers!I will give that a try.
Would making a playlist solve the play order thing as well? Just make a playlist of the spoken word tracks? (this really seems totally redundant to me which is why I have being looking for an alternati've solution)
It would be really cool if the folders were like the Rio my wife has where spoken word is a separate category from music and not listed as a "genre" under music.
thanks. -
Podcasts missing from Music Playlists
Front Row playlists used to show the same tracks as iTunes playlists, but in Leopard, Front Row fails to show podcast episodes in playlists. I just installed iTunes 8.0 and Front Row 2.1.6 on OSX 10.5.5, and the problem persists. What is the best workaround to let podcasts show up in Front Row playlists?
This question has been asked in other forums without reply, so I am hoping someone in the Front Row forum can address it:

Here's my workaround in iTunes 8, but it's kludgy and only works for audio podcasts:
1. Set "Preferences > General > Import Settings..." to something sensible (I like MP3 / 16kbps mono / 11.025 kHz for small files and MP3-CD compatibility, you may prefer higher quality).
2. Change "Podcast / is true" to "Genre / is / Podcast" in all smart playlists (right-click a smart playlist name, select "Edit Smart Playlist").
3. Open a playlist with podcasts you want to work with Front Row. Use shift-click, option-click, or cmd-A to select all podcast episodes in the playlist.
4. In the Advanced menu, select Create MP3 Version or Create AAC Version (as set in prefs). Wait for iTunes to rip copies of each item.
5. To remove doubles from smart playlists, delete the originals from the main Podcast list or add "Podcast / is false" to smart playlists.
6. Select the playlist from Front Row > Music > Playlists. It should now have your podcasts.
7. Tell Apple you need Front Row to show podcasts in playlists again.

Is there a better way?I eventually noticed that when I plugged in the iPod, the sync preferences for Podcasts were set to something "odd" - they are now set to include ALL episodes of ALL podcasts.
Even so, they remain missing from any playlist, however, they are available on the iPod from the podcast menu.
The only way I've got the podcasts to appear in a playlist on the iPod was to do Get Info > Options > Media Kind change to Music (instead of Podcast). Then it all works OK.
iTunes 8 showed no such problems. -
Updated to IOS 8 podcast app.
Problem 1: Still cannot separate synced podcast on the device vs podcasts in the cloud when using stations.
Say that I make a great station. The app includes podcasts not on device and needs to be download.
The app stops playing and all I hear is silence while the podcasts gets downloaded slowly. Bad user experience!
There should be away to play exclude podcasts that have not been downloaded.
Problem 2. Podcast app no longer understands the following smart playlist categories when syncing from itunes:
Kind
Composer
Group
Category
Comments
etc...
i use those categories to separate out video and music podcasts.
I want a playlist of only music and a playlist of only video. I don't want interruptions and wait for podcasts to be downloaded when it is already on the device.
In IOS 7 and previous, I have "Kind contains video" in the smart playlist to separate out video from music.
Now the Podcasts app sends that playlist to the music app. Because the smart playlist says also includes "Media kind is podcasts", the music app does not have anything in the playlist.
I created a video only station. But due to problem 1, it was a bad user experience.
I have the following in the smart playlist:
Match all
Media kind is podcasts
Kind contains video
Plays = 0In iTunes, right click on a movie (or video), select "get info" then select "video" and choose the correct category from the "video kind" box. Then click "ok".
When you've done this for all the videos/movies that are labelled wrongly, re-sync the iPod to reflect the changes. -
I want to start my own account separate from my parents. Can I transfer my music from one account to another? If so, how?

Lisa,
Just get copies of the song files and add them to your iTunes library. With the exception of any DRM-protected files (purchased before mid-2009 and never upgraded) they will play fine, even though they are technically associated with the original account. -
Need step by step instructions on how to separate my music from my husbands that I purchased on Itunes.I know my account is listed to set up manually...I just forget how to do it.I know I need to drag each song over right???Please advise
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself independently backed up against loss. To use a device with a new computer you transfer the content from the old computer (or its backup) directly to the new computer, not the device to the new computer. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer. iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Itunes 10.6.1.7 problem: when I change the file "media type" from 'Music' to 'Podcast' the file disapears from ITUNES. I do this via (1) right click, (2) select 'Get Info', (3) select 'options' tab, and (4) change media type. What is the problem?
Hi Memalyn
Essentially, the bare issue is that you have a 500GB hard drive with only 10GB free. That is not sufficient to run the system properly. The two options you have are to move/remove files to another location, or to install a larger hard drive (eg 2TB). Drive space has nothing to do with SMC firmware, and usually large media files are to blame.
My first recommendation is this: download and run the free OmniDiskSweeper. This will identify the exact size of all your folders - you can drill down into the subfolders and figure out where your largest culprits are. For example, you might find that your Pictures folder contains both an iPhoto Library and copies that you've brought in from a camera but are outside the iPhoto Library structure. Or perhaps you have a lot of purchased video content in iTunes.
If you find files that you KNOW you do not need, you can delete them. Don't delete them just because you have a backup, since if the backup fails, you will lose all your copies.
Don't worry about "cleaners" for now - they don't save much space and can actually cause problems. Deal with the large file situation first and see how you get on.
Let us know what you find out, and if you manage to get your space back.

What is the best way to keep my personal files stored in iCloud separate from my work-related files? It seems that I'm not allowed to link my iPad mini and my work iMac using two different accounts, so I'm wondering how to make my single personal account work for both, while keeping personal vs work files reasonably separated.
Thanks for any suggestions. Is it possible for you to upgrade your account to iCloud Drive? That would mean, all Macs upgraded to Yosemite, and all mobile devices to iOS8?
See: iCloud Drive FAQ and iCloud: About using iWork for iOS and iCloud
In iCloud Drive you could create two separate custom folders, one for work documents and one for private documents and organize your documents there. Don't use the app specific folders (Keynote, Pages, Numbers, ...) , because you can only create one level of folders inside these folders. -
How do I transfer all photos and music from my old iphone 3gs to new iphone 4s? I have a new laptop because the old one broke and so do not have non camera roll photos or music stored anywhere apart from the iphone 3gs and cannot update io5 on the iphone 3gs without erasibng everything. i need help!!!
Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your phone. Only if you back up manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your device without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPhone for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

I have an ipod touch that i use for my music in itunes, my question is can i restore an older nano 3rd generation ipod and use it for podcasts only, from the same account that i use for the itouch...sorry if this doesnt make sence! I want to use two ipods in my library, one for music and one for podcasts...
appreciate any help! thx!
LindaYes. There is no limit to the number of iPods, iPads, and iPhones you can sync with one computer/iTunes library or account. On top of that, how you sync one iPod does not affect the syncing preferences of another.
How to use multiple iPods, iPads, or iPhones with one computer
Simply configure the Nano to only sync podcasts and nothing else.

So I download mugglecast podcast and when I go to their website to download old episodes, they transfer to iTunes under the Music catagory. How can I take this podcast from Music and put it into my Podcast section? Any help would be great!
Go to http://www.dougscripts.com and download and install the Apple script "Re-Add Selected Tracks as Podcast v1.1". Then highlight the mp3's in iTunes that you want to convert to Podcasts, and run the script from the Apple script menu. That should take care of your problem.

Why were podcasts removed from the stable Music app?
Why were podcasts removed from the stable Music app? If it was absolutely necessary to have a seperate Podcasts app, why couldn't we have kept the iOS 6 option of leaving podcasts in the Music app if we didn't download the Apple Podcasts app. Since the iPhone 3g I have never had an issue with the Music app, it's always be reliably stable, yet it's been problem after problem after being forced to download the Podcasts app after updating to iOS 7.
1) Podcasts app, every version since being forced to download it with iOS 7, has never synced correctly with iTunes. My phone is always missing podcasts that I've set to sync and want to listen to when I'm away from my computer. Seems like this should be a basic function (one that worked flawlessly when podcasts were in the Music app)
2) Since the last two updates, it has been CRASH AD INFINITUM. Not a single podcast will play for more than a second before the app crashes to springboard. The newest update that supposedly 'fixed' the stability issue fixed nothing for me. What is the point of all the new features if the app won't stay open? I don't want new features, I just want to sync podcasts from iTunes and then listen to them on my phone. Podcasts really should be that simple!
I've killed Apple Podcasts app from the multitasking view. Restarted app. Crash.
I've deleted Apple Podcasts app, and all data, re-installed, and synced. Crash.
I've deleted Apple Podcasts app, and all data, re-installed, did not sync, downloaded a podcast from within the app. Crash.
I've restored my phone, only installed the Podcasts app, downloaded a podcast from within the app. Crash.
Bought a paid third-party app, downloaded a podcast from with the app. Enjoyed listening to a podcast.Hi,
This is a Google problem - they have purposefully removed the app.
Sorry about that!

I just received a new Windows 7 computer. I thought all my music in iTunes was kept separate from my computer and that when I installed iTunes into my new computer, that I'd again have access to the songs I'd purchased simply by entering my name and password. Not so. I can get to the store, type in my name & password, but there's no music there. What can I do?
" I thought all my music in iTunes was kept separate from my computer and that when I installed iTunes into my new computer, that I'd again have access to the songs I'd purchased simply by entering my name and password. "
You thought completely wrong.
Your music will ONLY be where you put it. You purchase ONE download only. Just as when you buy a cd from the store, you have to move/copy it wherever you want it. Your music will not magically appear anywhere.
You need to copy your music from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer to the new one. -
How can I Separate Playlists from Music in iTunes?
I created a playlist call 'iPhone' to synch with my iPhone. However, this playlist also shows up in 'Music' (under Library) and any change I make to one affects the other. If I delete the songs from Music, the playlist also gets deleted. How can I make a playlist that will be independent from the music window? This would allow me to add and delete songs from music without affecting the playlist.
You cannot. All a playlist is is a pointer to files located in your library. All a playlist is is a listing of music. Not actual files.
