  • Executing WINWORD from both Windows and linux using Java

    Dear All,
    I have a problem when trying to use Runtime class to execute a winword document. My code is as follows.
    Runtime r= Runtime.getRuntime();
    try{
    r.exec("rundll32"+" "+"url.dll,FileProtocolHandler"+" "+"WINWORD"+ " "+"file://C://welkom.doc");
    catch(Exception ex){
    System.out.println("Unable to open the doc file:"+ex);
    When I execute this swing application with the above, the program is unable to open the specific file. And it says "Problem with the short cut, unable to open the file". When I run the program without the file name, it opens a new doc file.
    Attn: what I want to do here is I need to open the winword file from both windows and linux. So I cannot use the relative path of the WINWORD.exe file.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Bala

    If you take a look at the api, there's an exec(String[]) method. This is the one you should use when calling a command with multiple parameters.
    so something like...
    String[] cmd = new String[] {"rundll32", "url.dll,FileProtocolHandler", "WINWORD", "file://C://welkom.doc"}
    r.exec(cmd);

  • External hard drive for both windows and mac

    hello, all - just bought a western digital 500gb my book premium edition external hard drive. will be using for both pc and macbook, not necessarily to share files (though i may on occasion), but rather as a backup. been researching the discussion boards and concluded that i should use it as pre-formatted fat32. few questions...
    1) if i do use to share files, from what i understand i will be able to read windows files with my mac but i can't read mac files with windows (unless i have macdrive installed). is this correct?
    2) since mac can read/write to fat 32, is it necessary to partition the drives and keep the files separated? i talked to a "computer guy" earlier today and he said i should consider having two completely separate external hard drives as having files from two different operating systems on the same drive could cause major problems for both... i didn't really believe him.
    3) i have seen different posts stating using fat32 format for mac limits file size to 4gb. another post said 32gb. which is right? i have os is 10.4.7 if that makes a difference.
    thanks in advance for any insight.

    2 - i don't mind partitioning at all. but he strongly suggested not even partitioning but using two completely separate hard drives. yeah, the 500gb was a bit overkill, so if i can use it for both as opposed to one and buying an additional, i'd rather.
    2/3 - if i partition, is it best to divide it into ntfs and hfs+? or should i keep the pc portion fat32? if the mac portion is hfs+, can i store any size file? i have videos that are anywhere from 10-20gb, and i'd like to get them off my computer and into the external drive.
    thanks.

  • How to export for both windows and mac users

    I'm new to the video stuff, so i have a few questions. i am planning to post videos on my blog. I want to have them in a format that both windows and mac users can play. is this a possibility or will i have to export .wmv for windows and quicktime for mac? i realize that windows users can download quicktime, but i either want the video to be viewable in a format that can be read by all without having to download anything (might be too big a wish :o) ). if i can't do that, then i'd like to have 2 links - one for quicktime and one to the .wmv. in this case, how to i export a .wmv file? i don't see that option anywhere on the share menu? do i need to buy quicktime pro? that leads me to another questions - if i have imovie, do i need quicktime pro? so far i'm having a hard time figuring out what quicktime pro has that imovie doesn't....thanks in advance!

    Posting to YouTube and providing a URL link might be the most universal method of playback although quality may be on the weak side.

    WMV is a proprietary compression format. You will either have to purchase the authorized QT components from Flip4Mac or purchase a separate open source converter application like Visual Hub.
    i don't see that option anywhere on the share menu?
    Any you won't even if you purchase and install the QT component -- iMovie '08 only exports to QT compression formats.
    do i need to buy quicktime pro?
    It wouldn't help. Getting QT Pro only unlocks editing and conversion features. It does not add any additional codecs which don't already have installed.
    if i have imovie, do i need quicktime pro? so far i'm having a hard time figuring out what quicktime pro has that imovie doesn't.
    As indicated above, QT Pro allows you to convert to/from any compression formats for which you have working import/export QT components. This can already be be done using GarageBand and iMovie. GarageBand allows you to access any installed QT import/export component while iMovie '08 restricts you to Apple QT components. In addition, QT Pro allows you to create player displays with multiple audio/video tracks, gives you ability to layer graphic elements (e.g, create watermarks, create pictures-within-pictures, etc,), allow the viewer to switch between alternate audio and/or video tracks, and may other things.
    ADDED: If you really want to see what QT Pro can do, check out QTKirk's examples on his DotMac account.

  • I have a an external hard drive formatted for Windows, and I want to move those files to a new hard drive formatted for both Windows and OS. Is this possible?

    I just purchased a MB Air 13", as well as a Seagate Slim Backup Plus. I have an older external hard drive that I was using with a Dell laptop. I would like to get the files off of the older external hard drive, and onto the new Seagate drive. Is this possible? I'd also like to be able to add files going forward to the Seagate from either a PC or a Mac and be able to view/use them on the MB Air 13".
    Thanks in advance.

    You will have to format the Seagate external HDD to a format common to both Mac and PC such as ExFAT.  That should allow you to transfer files from the old HDD and still allow you to use with your MBA.
    Ciao.

  • Good Wireless Router for Both Windows and Mac

    Anyone know of an outstanding wireless router that's compatible with both Operating Systems (Windows/Mac)? Should I get an "n"? Will that work for both? Does the new Airport Extreme router fit that bill?
    Thanks,
    Henri

    If you can still find one, I'd get the old Airport Extreme (round snow). Right now, the new 802.11n is in the process of suffering growing pains with third party equipment.
    This is only my opinion. If you review this discussion topic area and read the posts you can make a decision.

  • From localtime to UTC on both Windows and Linux (Solved)

    Hi,
    It has been a while since I updated my Archlinux. I read from the news corner that it is now strongly recommended to change from localtime to UTC (http://www.archlinux.org/news/initscripts-update-1/). Since I have a dual-boot system of Archlinux and Windows 7 RC I currently use localtime for both. From what I understand is that there is now a registry fix such that Windows will also use UTC. Now my question is: is there a recommended order in updating the two operating systems? My worry is that if I update one OS to UTC then the hardware clock is probably saved as UTC at shutdown. Then starting the other OS (which still assumes localtime) might cause troubles when it reads the hardware clock which is now in UTC.
    At http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums … e90c6e243/ they recommend the following order:
    1 - Apply the registry fix in Windows
    2 - Shutdown Windows and start your alternate OS
    3 - Set the time right
    4 - Shutdown your alternate OS and boot Windows
    5 - Sleep and resume from sleep Windows
    I think step 5 is necessary, because Windows messes with the clock again after a resume from suspend/hibernation.
    Secondly, at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … #Set_clock it is stated that you should also disable Windows from syncing the time with the Internet. Does this still apply?
    I can remember that Windows once corrected for daylight saving by setting the clock one hour back. Rebooting to Archlinux afterwards caused various warnings (or errors) regarding time stamps being in the future. Waiting for one hour and then boot Archlinux 'solved' the problem. Still, I would like to prevent these things when I switch to UTC.
    Thoughts and recommendations are appreciated.

    Thanks for the reply. I played on safe with this issue:
    1. Stop Windows from syncing its time with the Internet.
    2. Apply the registry fix in Windows
    3. Reboot to Windows to be sure everything applied well
    4. Assuming the time skew between localtime and UTC can't be more than 24 hours I decided to wait for roughly 24 hours to boot Archlinux (yes.. some people still have that luxury)
    5. Apply UTC to Archlinux
    For now, everything is running well

  • How can i format an external drive to be used for both windows and mac

    i recently bought a macbook pro and used bootcamo so as to be able to run win7 and mac. I now wish to have an external usb drive so as to backup and tranfer files between the two os's. How can I do this?

    Firstly,
    There is a forum for MacBook Pro - not this. And for Boot Camp.
    You can:
    add Paragon HFS driver to Windows which works
    add Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X
    USB is of course slow and while people use it for backups and TimeMachine, that is one place where FW800, eSATA or USB3 would be better served.

  • Can I use Airport TimeCapsule's internal hard drive as a network-based backup solution for both windows and mac?

    Does the following scenario work??? :-
    A Windows PC is connected to Airport TimeCapsule (ATC) wifi.
    A Mac is connected to the ATC wifi.
    The Mac's Time Machine software is set up and automatically backs up to the internal HDD.
    The Mac can browse files on the internal HDD, and drag and drop files to and from.
    The PC can easily see the internal HDD as a device on the network. The PC can drag and drop files to the internal HDD. The PC can read and write to the files that the MAC has placed on it. The PC has some automated backup software installed, which recognises the ATC internal HDD as a backup storage device.

    You are right.. you cannot partition a TC.
    Nor can you use NTFS..
    And you can corrupt the TM backup but you can do that from Mac just as well.. the TC is better with one disk used for data or TM and another disk.. a USB plugged in for the other.
    Windows compatible means.. all names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    You used to be able to set workgroup but Apple haven't bothered with that of late.. there is no upgrade to the airport utility for windows.. although one should be coming. Windows can have issues.. it was no problem on the older 5.6 utility and that still partly works but I have no idea if it will work on the AC model.

    Hi,
    I have been looking for Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 but I could not find in any website. Could anyone provide with the downloading link.
    Thanks

    OK, so forget about CS3. Without a valid serial number, you cannot activate the trial version and Adobe no longer sells CS3.
    Any reason you're specifically trying to obtain CS3?
    You can purchase CS6 for a one time fee

    No. And that takes care of your otehr questions - it's a moot point. Standalone permanent licenses are platform specific and there's no way around that. Only Creative Cloud allows cross-platform usage as do certain types of volume licenses, none of which is relevant to your situation.

    This occurs regardless if I boot to windows or into a linux bootable dvd.

    ->
    Thus I believe it is the intel 4000 graphics that has some hardware failure which is not invoked upon remote desktop.
    I wonder if this is a known issue?
    I wonder if only a replacement of the intel 4000 graphics will fix this (this probably means replacing the main board entirely?)
    Or
    If it is in any way likely that it is _only_ because maybe thermal paste between cooler and cpu/graphics is slipping?

    Have you tried setting up the connection manually?
    e.g.

    #Unlock wireless devices
    rfkill unblock all
    #enable interface
    ifconfig wlan0 up
    #check network visibility
    iwlist wlan0 scanning
    #configure wifi
    iwconfig wlan0 essid <ESSID>
    iwconfig tx auto
    and then set up wpa_supplicant in case you use WPA2!

    One thing I regularly miss when getting a new wifi device is to add it to the MAC filter list of my router, so check if the MAC address is added there...

  • Creating InDesign files for both print and mobile output?

    I am looking for a way to create files that can be multi-purpose for both print and mobile/online environments. I would like the output to be 2 different PDFs from one set of Indesign files. The problem I am encountering is that currently my files are full of hi-res and vector graphics, effects, and are generally created to be optimized for large-scale printings on offset or digital presses. I am trying to use the same files to generate files that are optimized for mobile and online presentation but finding that the number of vector graphics specifically is slowing page display down.
    My initial reaction is that the solution would have to be dual-development. Multiple forms of 'master graphics' would have to be created and placed on multiple layers (one for print and one for mobile/online).
    Hi-res files could be made lo-res in Acrobat or Pitstop, but vector imagery would have to be rasterized and I am not aware of a method to do that in either of those programs.
    I have found some info on adobe.com leading me to think that maybe CS6 addresses some of this, but the majority of my work is being done in CS4 with only the bleeding edge being done in CS5.
    Thanks in advance for any insight.

    the output to be 2 different PDFs from one set of Indesign files.
    You can accomplish this by saving each PDF using a different preset - High Quality Print for the high res, smallest file size for web
    but vector imagery would have to be rasterized...
    You should be trying to keep all vector work as vectors. This, in most cases, lowers the file size. There are a couple of exceptions to that like if the vectors are very complex (layered etc) and you are using bitmap effects like drop shadows. In general, rasterizing will increase the file size and lower the quality.
    Is there any functional difference between the 2 PDFs? I am wondering why exporting using 2 different presets will not do the job efficiently enough. You could always save your linked images with a low res version - same file but make a copy 100dpi instead of 300dpi. This might help but InD normally downsamples the images anyway when exporting as smallest file size.
    EDIT:// In Acrobat, you can save as "Reduced Size PDF" which strips out all the meta data etc and makes the PDF lighter and faster for web use. This would be a final, before publishing online step.

  • I have partitioned my time capsule, but I can't get it to work as a Time Machine back up and permanent media server for both mac and PC. What format do I need to partition the drive to so that it works for both mac and windows and so that it will be visab

    I have partitioned my time capsule, as I want part of it to act as a media server for both mac and windows. However I don't know what format that I need to partition it to. I also can't make it a permanently accesible drive. I want to restore the drive to the original format (which I don't know) and start again and re-partition the drive in a format that can be used for media by both mac and PC and for time machine back-ups and make the media part of it permanetly accesible so I can add and acccess my files.
    Thanks

    You are mixing up a couple of things here.
    The TC drive cannot be partitioned without removing it.. did you do that?
    If you partition it you must use a Mac disk utility and use the HFS+ ie standard Mac format. And GUID partition table not windows type.
    You can select erase disk in the airport utility.. that will take the disk back to original format. No partitions. TC is deliberately not partitioned as it is not a media server.. it is a backup device for TM. Over time .. the disk will be filled with TM backups so you have a long history of file changes to your computer.
    There is no media server in the TC.. it is merely disk storage.. you can serve files from it to a media device.. but the TC itself is dumb as dumb.
    Now the actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. The TC offers SMB file services to the network. You can copy files to and from the TC as if it was a local disk without caring one iota about the format. The TC handles that .. it is not a local disk .. it is a network drive.
    Although you cannot partition the TC. you can still copy files to it.. this does have implications for TM.. but as long as there is plenty of free space should not be a major issue.
    You can create a disk image via the disk utility in a Mac.. and as stated you can create partitions if you do it on a Mac with the disk directly connected which means breaking warranty if any exists on the TC.
