This is the project my Intro to Programming students take on when we get to Variables. I will make a point of having them publish the results and share them here.
Here is two of the challenges I give them: Prevent words from wrapping past the edge of the Textwindow. In others, provide a natural break in the text about 3/4 of the way across so longer entries don't message up the display. An highlight the input words
in your story by changing their color.

Small Basic crashes

I just took up Small Basic as an introduction to programming. So I started doing some exercises from a German language tutorial that I have. This is the code:
TextWindow.WriteLine("Who?: ")
name = TextWindow.Read()
TextWindow.WriteLine(name + " is awesome")
When executing from within Small Basic, the program crashes. I use it on my old Windows XP machine (SP3), Intel CPU T2080.
Unfortunately I cannot install it on my newer Windows 8 machine, since it's a shared computer with my wife (it's essentially her computer now), but apparently Small Basic is supposed to work on Win XP.

How to use column with linkToItem in the Basic Table view style mode

Hi
I have already changed a normal column that I made to a column with linkToItem as follows.
<viewfields>
<FieldRef Name="MyColumn" linkToItem="TRUE">
and it worked.
But this column works only at the default view style mode in my case.
Does anyone know how to use linkedToItem column in the Basic Table mode?

According to your description, my understanding is that you want to use linkToItem in the Basic Table view style.
Per my test, in the Default style view, we need to use linkToItem=”TRUE”. However, in Basic Table style view, we need to use LinkToItem=”TRUE” instead.

Share your speaking tips and tricks

Please share your speaking tips and tricks that SAP TechEd '07 speakers can take advantage of when they present in Las Vegas, Munich, Bangalore, and Shanghai. Also, if you ever watched an excellent speaker, please share what you thought made him/her so effective. Hopefully, with all these great tips and tricks SDN and BPX communities will have some of the best public speakers out there!

There are some obvious (or should-be-obvious) tips, such as being prepared, being on time, having a backup plan and being a subject matter expert, and some fairly common speaker faults (too quiet or too formal), but here are the top 3 goals I strive for when I speak:
1) Time management. Having too little material for a 1 hour session, or trying to do a 2 hour lecture plus a 30 minute demo, or speaking up until the next session, are annoyances to avoid. I like to have too many slides so I can skip some, but my rule of thumb is about 1 slide per minute. Leave time for questions at the end, and for the spontaneous hallway conversations to erupt.
2) Rehearsal. It's not a sermon, or a strict one-way lecture, but I am normally more relaxed if I've given the material to several smaller crowds ahead of the bigger event.
3) Empathy. In a presentation class I took last year we learned how to tell if your audience is engaged. Telling a joke is great, but it is always helpful when people nod their heads, raise their hands or evoke body language showing they have been there, done that with the pain points of software and hardware management.

A connection to the deployment share could not be made - Networking device did not have a driver installed

I have a couple of HP 8200 desktops that I think might have bad nics. When I PXE boot them and start my LiteTouch, I get a Wizard error that says
A connection to the deployment share (\\mydpshare\share) could not be made. The following networking device did not have a driver installed

I have that driver in MDT and it works on other HP 8200s. Looking into the Wpeinit.log, it looks like the driver loads but maybe the nic is bad:

Installing device pci\ven_8086&dev_1502 X:\WINDOWS\INF\net1ic64.inf succeeded

Connection to the deployment share could not be made (network driver not installed)

Hi guys! i bought the new laptop Dell Latitude E6510 and try to install the enterprise image but i got the error:
"A connection to the deployment share could not be made. The deployment will not proceed. The following networking device did not have a driver installed PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_10EA&SUBSYS_040B1028&REV_05."
I look on internet and i found out that it is the intel network card driver missing. So i get the driver from Dell website and i added this drivers in the MDT console.
Then i have updated the deployment share to rebuild the boot images. Everything went fine but i always get this error.
Am I missing something ?

I too was having the problem...
the single thing that I was forgetting is that while I was recreating & regenerating the images in the deployment workbench. I wasn't burning & booting from a CD...
because (aha) I'm clever & using Windows deployment services to boot across the network & save all that time burning CDs etc.
Doh, I didn't update the WIM that WDS was using...
Open your windows deployment services console,
expand out servers : <server name> : boot images
Right click your boot image (I have 2, one for x86 & one for x64),
choose "replace image" then navigate to your newly regenerated WIM images
(probably C:\deployment_share\boot) & choose the appropriate WIM file.
do this for any images you have, reboot your client machine & BAM, deployment goodness.
MS should really add a module for PXE boot (etc) into the deployment workbench rather than have 2x deployment solutions & use the deployment module from one & the boot module from the other.
Anyhoo, works now, must make a mental note to remember this in future...

The attached Netbeans project contains a small test case in the test-folder (using FXML, at least b37 required - might work with b38). Just run the “net.fifteenup.tools.image.svg.test.SvgTest” class.

Two Problems within the Small Basic landscape

The Small Basic of things.
There are 2 situations in the Small Basic landscape that I think are a bit disappointing and possibly reduce growth opportunities for the SB community:
Programs don't always run in the browser; and
Program Delay is retarded when the SB ide is closed. (big issue for gamers)
Nonki has a workaround for 1 and I've done a workaround in the past for 2 (awaiting test feedback on this).
I think it would be opportunistic and more efficient if it were easier for SB devs to supply programs and code for audiences that have SB installed and those who don't.
The only possible advantage I see with this situation is that it requires SB coders to learn how to deploy workarounds.
It would be a lot simpler if workarounds weren't required.
Any thoughts?

Apple says they are aware and working on it. The Sound is "not" lost and may be retrievable after their fix. It is an iMovie problem. It may take a while as they are preoccupied with the new "Mountain Lion" release. In the meantime I am saving my movies on my MacBook. If you can record your sound with a setting other them FPEG 2 that may help. I can't, so I am stuck. Big trip to NWT in late August so I am holding my breath. Hope they are faster than fixing the Numbers upload to iCloud.

I love Small Basic- Request for in-app language reference

My 9 year old daughter got a computer for xmas and wants to learn to code. I found Small Basic and it is perfect for teaching simple constructs and logic blocks. We are having fun with making "Hello, NAME$! How are you feeling today" programs.
My only suggestion would be to have a language reference in the program. Is there a place to submit suggestions or feedback?

MS Small Basic Images - layer priority oder command help plz?

Hi, can any one guide me on how to prioritise the layer order of images in a graphic window using MS Small Basic V1.0 please?
I couldn't see any command in the intellisense window to use, any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hello Jibba Jabba, thanks for the fast reply, I hope GQW771 project works for bmp, jpg, gif and png images, that project you sent me is a very impressive example of z order demo, this is what I need for my project!
I will try and decipher the code and test it for images and let you know the result!

Small Basic Hangman

Hello! I am trying to create a hangman game using Microsoft Small Basic, but I am failing. Can anyone please help me?

Here is a sample code (although this code is more complete than most samples). It's a text version of hangman, which is one way to start off this particular program. It's for two players: one player inputs the
word and the other player tries to guess the word. The major foundations are established so a graphics version is possible. For future reference, it would be helpful to post any code you have done so far on the forum or you could break down your program into
smaller parts by focusing one part and making it the topic of your post. Like litdiv said, you could focus on how you would approach the game in real life. For instance, hangman consist of these major components:
1. One person creates the word to be guessed.
2. The game begins. Another person evaluates the word by guessing one letter at a time.
3. An individual's decision has two outcomes: if letter is correct then character is printed as an added clue or if incorrect then penalized by having one less chance to guess.
Steps 2-5 are repeated until the player runs out of chances or manage to guess all the characters before running out of chances.
Now, let's translate the previous steps to a programming perspective:
1. The word to be guessed is stored into a variable—keyWord—by player 1.
2. The program then takes keyWord and breaks it down into sub-variables (an array) inside a loop so each letter can be evaluated by the program.
3. The guess inputted by player 2 will be stored in a variable called input. The variable, input, is then compared to each sub-variables, or also known as indices, inside a loop. If input doesn't match any of the
indices then player 2 is penalized by subtracting one from the variable, chances, the number of times the player can make a mistake. Otherwise, input is printed (displayed on screen) and the value of numOfCharsLeft, which tracks how many letters are left to
be guessed, is deducted by one.
These last two steps are nested inside a large loop (commonly known as the main loop) and constantly repeated until chances is zero, you lose, or numOfCharsLeft is zero, you win.

Hi,
1) With 11g recently becoming available, should we upgrade to 11g or upgrade to 10g ?You should upgrade to 10g, and apply the latest 10g patches.
2) There is a white paper on Metaline (313418.1) that discusses using 10g with EBS. Is there anything similar for 11g ?11g is not available with the EBS. It has a different architecture and is not supported with EBS.
3) Can anyone share with me how long the actual upgrade process takes (please specify if your timings are 10g or 11g) ? To upgrade you need to do a new install of Discoverer 10g and upgrade the EUL. Make sure you have a good backup of the EUL before starting. The Discoverer install is straightforward and the EUL upgrade only takes a minute. BUT although all the workbooks are upgraded they are changed in ways that you might not have expected. Parameters become optional, occasionally worksheets disappear, titles get corrupted, the SQL generated can different, may perform more slowly and may occasionally return different results. It is sorting out these issues and regression testing the workbooks that take the time.
