Strageness when resizing and exporting

So, I'm trying to export about 40 shots in a mix of aspect ratios and orientations from iPhoto 6. What I want to do is resize them so that they fit on a 640 x 480 without needing to be resized. I want landscape shots to be 640 width x 480 height and portrait shots 320 width x 480 height. I figured I could just change the max height to 480 but that changes the width to 320 and I get a bunch of 320 x 480 and 480 x 320s. When I change the width to 640 it changes the height 960 and they're all too big.
Is there a way to do what I'm trying here without doing the two sets seperately?
Thanks!

SU:
Export the files, full size, to a folder on the Desktop. Then download and launch Resize! (a freebie) and set the size to Proportional - Height 480. Drag the folder into the app's window and hit Go. A new folder will be created with the resized files that all have a height of 480 and either 320 or 640 width. You can set the quality/compression level to suit your needs. A 60% level will reduce the original 2.5 MB file down to about 50 KB with excellent results. Great for web posting.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How do I resize and export photos in Aperture without them becoming pixelateded

I'm having trouble resizing my photos and exporting them without the end result being an overly pixelated photo.  This happens when I am resizing my photos to a 5 by 7 size.

    Amanda,
Welcome to the user-supported Aperture discussion group.
In Aperture, you don't resize to a "print" size.  You export to a specific pixel size.
So, what size are you actually exporting it as?
I believe both Terence and I suspect that you have a very low-res picture and you are telling Aperture to make it have more pixels.  If you are intending to print the photos, there is really no difference in sending the original, low-res version to the printer versus having Aperture add pixels to your photo.  Something, somewhere, will have to add pixels.

  • PE2 hangs with Windows 7 when creating and exporting files

My computer running WinXP just broke down on me for the 2nd time in 7 years, so I finally decided to upgrade. I put it off because I was afraid of windows 7 having compatibility issues with my old software, and now I'm having trouble with Premiere Elements 2. After it opens up I can cancel and exit but if I try to create a file it stops responding. The tutorial opens up as if there's no problem and it plays on the timeline like normal. When I tried to export that sample video the computer hung for a long time before letting me change the output settings. The file rendered at a normal speed, and the exported video looks fine. Since then I've transferred my old files and have no problem working with them or importing new media to an existing file. It's just creating and exporting that causes problems. I'm using Windows 7 home premium, 64 bit.

Have you tried right-clicking the application icon and setting it to run in XP compatibility mode?
If not you could install a Virtual Machine to run using your existing XP Licence. Or upgrade your W7 to Professional/Ultimate that includes Virtual XP Mode.
    Cheers,

  • Frustrating issue when adjusting and exporting

    Hi all,
Apologies of this has been answered but I have a real frustrating problem with Aperture3 that may drive me into the arms of LR3 if I cant sort it!
Its to do with the viewer and adjusted images.
Basically when Im ready for export I like to scroll through my final set before exporting the Adjusted RAW files as JPEGS for use on my Flickr etc.
However how do I prevent Aperture showing the original RAW file in amongst my newly adjusted images?? Sometimes I have 4 versions of the images and as you can appreciate its incredibly tedious having to scroll through 4 versions of many files. Added to that its very distracting.
Can any photogs advise?? Thanks in advance
    Regards
    Stu

Create an Album and place the versions you're going to export into it. When you ready to export just look through the Album and export from there.

  • EXIF data lost when edited and exported to Picasa web

I use iPhoto 6. If a geotagged photo is scaled and exported to Picasa web, then the EXIF data are preserved and recognized by Picasa web. But if the same photo is edited (crop, contrast...) and then exported to Picasa web, then the EXIF data don't appear. I've tried the export operation manually and through the plugin, but it always happens the same. How to avoid this? Does it happen too with iPhoto 8? Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Yes and no. With iPhoto 8 you can export with an option to include the keywords, titles and comments. But I don't know if geotags are included. Ask in the iPhoto 8 forum as I know geotags have been discussed there. Do a search in that forum for "geotags" or similar.

I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • IPhoto questions - resizing and exporting

Hi there - I have a couple of questions surrounding iPhoto and resizing images.
    1) I want to use my original file - as I first imported it. Most of my images when imported were 2-3MB files. When I export them out of iPhoto, I have a number of options in regards to quality and size. When I exported best quality and maximum size, the file became twice the size of the original (around 5MB). How do I just use the original as it was imported?
    2) When I right click on an image saved onto my desktop and look at 'get info' it tells me what I believe is the actual size of my image - usually around 2.4MB. However, when I open it in Preview and go to tools/adjust size it gives me a 'resulting size' which is much less than what I see when I open the 'get info' option (around 1.5MB). Does anyone know anything about why this is?
    3) I understand the 'myth' surrounding dpi but is there any reason WHY everything is opening at 72dpi when other programs have opened my images at 300dpi?
Many thanks in advance for your help
    Sarah

have you tried exporting with no option? the final size depends on lot of things (and no matter how big it is it will not be better than the original

Actual size would be large - think TIFF size - all JPEG sized re compresses - more compression means slightly less quality and smaller size
    3) I understand the 'myth' surrounding dpi but is there any reason WHY everything is opening at 72dpi when other programs have opened my images at 300 dpi?
Because DPI has not meaning until there are inches associated with the image - it is a meaningless number

  • 10.9.2 Finder Freezes when resizing and changing directories

I just updated to 10.9.2 to find that when the Finder is open, and I resize the Finder, for instance to stack two windows side by side ... the Finder freezes when I simply drag the corner of the window around.
Similar thing happens when I click on a different folder.
Seems pretty odd given that I have a recent system with an SSD, and I didn't have the problem before.

  • CS4 Master Edition & Snow Leopard all crash when saving and exporting

Add this one to the list of suffering CS4 users. My first ever post in my life.
The details - CS4, Master Edition Mac Pro, all did run well on old leopard system.
The story, upgrading and updating to 10.6.1 all CS4 programmes instantly crashed when using save as, save, or export. This happens about 70% of the time.
An erase of the hard drive and fresh install NO UPDATES CS4 was fine, After a couple of days I took a chance and updated the apple software (included is HP printer driver 2.2 and canon printer driver 2.1 included in the update package. almost as soon as the printer driver was around 50% downloaded CS4 started crashing. (photoshop / illustrator / indesign) All updates from apple are now installed and I have to save at almost every stroke I make in CS4 as I have deadlines, and I have fooled around too much with this upgrade. I will not go into the inability of scanning with my HP CM1312nfi MFP (networked), but any resolution there would be nice also, as now I have to scan to the memory card and then network out to the the desktop.
    Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.6.1) Serial - YM90101ZXYL - BUILT 10B504

I tried all suggestions with no real good effect. I spent two hours reinstalling Leopard 10.5 and CS4 Master now all is good and staying good. That proves something is up with Snow Leopard. I will wait for the upgrade and response before I will touch Snow Leopard again. Save your time and money and do not buy or use this operating system yet.

  • Resizing and export function in LR and printing adjustments

    (1) Lightroom version 5 should correct deficiencies in the export function, Many picture agencies/websites require a target file size in megabytes, say a minimum of 24MB or 48MB in RGB or sRGB-Only megapixels can be enterd in LR. LR does not display the original nor developed/cropped image size in MB so following compression to an 8 bit jpeg, it is not clear what  target file size has been achieved unless it is separately opened in Photoshop or when uploaded. There is also no means of viewing within LR the resultant upsized image at 1:1 in the export window to check for artifacts/softness before exporting, so poor quality or under sized images can be exported. An accurate preview display would be useful.     ( 2) Separately, I am not sure why LR4.4 and earlier versions do not the allow the export of the same image more than once to the same or different folder on the computer? There also seems to be a low limit on the file size than can be exported.  (3) The print module should preview accurately the lightness and contrast adjustments for printing which would avoid a lot of wasted ink and paper. The soft proofing mode does not in my view accurately do this either.

If you'd like to submit features for possible inclusion into future versions of Lightroom, here is the link to use.
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/
As far as Lightroom 5 is concerned, the list of features is relatively fixed and can be seen in Lightroom 5beta, and it is unlikely that additional new features will appear in Lightroom 5.
Regarding (1), I simply don't understand why anyone would require a specific megabytes for a photo. It makes no sense to me. Depending on what manipulations I perform on a photo, I can get the same photo to be many different sizes, but I'm not adding value nor am I producing a superior photo, I'm just changing the megabytes.
Regarding (2), I never tried exporting a photo twice, but it seems to me that if you just change the name on the second export file, there shouldn't be a problem. Am I wrong?

  • How to both resize AND export to PNG at specific resolution?

I am trying to export a PAIR of vector files as PNG-24's, one at 72 ppi and the second at 150 ppi, Illustrator CC.
I also want both exported files to have a different SIZE that their existing (and of course, completely arbitrary) vector dimensions.
If I use Save for Web in Illustrator CC, I can indeed change the size, BUT I can't specify a resolution!
On the other hand if I try to do a File > Export, I can easily specify the resolution as 150 ppi, BUT I can't change the size!
If I go 'way back to my Illustrator CS4 version, there was a toolbar display of the selected object's  (or group's) physical dimensions - see the attached image - but I can't seem to find it in the CC version of Illustrator.
As Retina resolution images have been around for several years, it would be helpful to be able to have complete control over how vector images created in Illustrator could be output at 150 ppi AND with the ability to specify the physical size. And, being able to write an action to export the pair of different resolution images would be even better.
Am I missing the obvious here? For the time being, I am back to my old machine with Illustrator CS4 just to export Retina-friendly images...

This is not the issue - pixels are pixels, you're right. It is a question, rather, of how awkward it is to export the different sized files from Illustrator.
Here's the problem. Supposed I have a vector file that has nominal dimensions of 385px  x 91px on the artboard - can't even SEE that info anymore, as I noted. (I'm sure there's a toggle somewhere for that, but I can't seem to find it...)
I want to export this as a PNG at a smaller size, say at 62% = 239px × 57px. OK, just click and it's done, Save for Web, 62%.
Now, I need to export it at twice that physical size for the Retina version. If I didn't write down my first PNG's EXPORTED dimensions, (and I work on a LOT of these files...), when I go back to Save for Web, I have to manually remember to double the first file's EXPORTED dimensions, i.e., 239px × 57px = 124% to get my larger file of 478px × 114px.
On the other hand, if I go to File > Export, Illustrator lets me create larger files, but won't let me change the dimensions of the original file to begin with. It just makes no sense to me. If I could reset the vector's nominal size FIRST, it would be much simpler. One Save for Web, then one Export at Medium Res.

  • How can I fix choppy playback when importing AND exporting in iMovie 9.0.4?

I recently updated my system to OS Lion and also upgraded to the new iMovie 9.0.4. Now, the movies I import into iMovie (as .Mov, M4v, etc) are playing choppy when edited in the iMovie viewer AND playing choppy after exported. My computer was purchased NEW, its just over a year old. Any advice would help!

Most ISP's have a file size limit for email attachments and a five minute video is just too much for most of them.
In order to compress the video enough to fit as an attachment you would have to reduce its dimensions (postage stamp size) and decrease the data rate (adds artifacts). Not practical.
A better method would be to upload the file to a server and just share the URL via email. Mobile Me (if you're a member).
You can also share very large files via iChat.
There are also file "sharing" services (Google) that you can use.

  • FCP freezes when rendering and exporting (HD)

    2 x 2.66 dual core intel with 1 go 667 DDR2 FB-DIMM, ATY,RadeonX1900
Ok Got this project with green screen (conduit) and a motion template spiral title thing. When I tried to render the whole sequence it would freeze half way there. Then I rendered one cut at a time finally got it to be rendered the I try to save as quicktime movie as is and when it's at 90% its freezes.
Recently I upgraded but didn't do anythigne mush different then usall. Help me got a bunch of other green screen to do.

Read up on setting up 'Virtual Clusters' in compressor. This works extraordinarily well with an 8core Mac Pro.
No real benefit within FCP, but within Compressor, the thing screams.

  • Keep actual image size when rotating and exporting to PDF

When one rotates an image in a non-right angle in InDesign, the resulting image in the PDF, even if looks the same size of the original image when compared save for being rotated, actually shrink in size. That's noticieable when one saves the image from the PDF as the rotated image appears rotated inside the same size of the original, rather than being larger. I fear it may cause some quality loss at print. Is there any workaround around it?
Or it is just a previsualization glitch and the file prints normal? (as while importing the PDF in Illustrator seems to keep the original resolution of the image)

    Peroyomas wrote:
Or it is just a previsualization glitch and the file prints normal?
I can't see a difference in size between two copies of the same image when one is rotated in a non-right angle and the other is at zero rotation.
From the way your question is worded, I'm not sure what you are doing.

If it looks the same size, what makes you think it is not?

  • Resizing and exporting to flash = headaches and long nights

I have footage shot in 16:9 PAL DV (interlaced)
Client now wants delivery as a flash file 600 x 400 pixels.
    +How do I get the best result?+
Should I output the file as a PAL DV interlaced and then convert it to flash? The results I got are not very satisfactory.
Should I change the sequence setting within FCP to 600 x 400 pixels square, insert the original clip at 100% (thus clipping a bit off the edges), and deinterlace, and then export to Quicktime? Also not very good results.
+I know that this involves quite a bit of resising, so if anyone has a good workflow suggestion for me, I would be more than happy.+

    Bump. < </div>
Your question would be best answered in a Flash forum. It's not simple and Flash is terrifically misunderstood by most clients. There are FLV and SWF files and there are at least five different Flash encoders you could be using, including Adobe's.
Once you export a top-quality QT out of FCP, it's up to your Flash encoder to create the best possible image file. If you have a Mac-compatible Flash encoder on your FCP machine, you need to investigate the manual and mfr's site for that product.
The best, fastest, easiet way to get FLash done properly is to provide a Flash artist with your QT file.

I did a test the other day and played footage back via HDMI directly from the Camcorder to the HDTV, and the quality is excellent, it is truly HD quality, however... if i play the same footage that has gone through iMovie...
