Straight from camera

I have looked high and low, tried everything I know, but to no avail can I find how to record straight from the camera to final cut express. I can do it in iMovieHD, but when I go to capture in FCE and then click on "Now" it keeps telling me my camera needs to be set to VTR mode. I can capture what has already be recorded on tape, but not live. Don't tell me this is impossible and if so why can I do it with iMovieHD or iMovie08?
I don't want to take the time to capture then transfer, I should just be able to capture and edit.

Hi(Bonjour)!
Try basic firewire NTSC (or PAL for Europe) in easy settings.
You can also use Quicktime Player PRO to record directly the signal from your camcorder through firewire and save the movie on your disk. Be sure to save in a codec supported by FCE HD.

  • Capture video straight from camera into macbook

    Hi,
Is there anyway of capturing video live straight from my camera into my white macbook running FCE 4 via firewire?
    Cheers

Plug in the camera, make sure it's set to shoot in 48k, select the DV converter preset. Open the log and capture window you should see the live camera in the window. Press Now and it starts capturing.

  • Capturing Straight from Camera

I can't find the thread on this but, has anyone ever captured straight to FCP while filming? To cut down capture time?

Connect your camera to your Mac via Firewire. Most consumer cameras will require that you roll tape for this to work; pro cameras usually don't need to roll tape, but its a good backup.
Next, set FCP's Device Control to "Non-Controllable Device" and use Capture Now.

  • Can a RAW image have a colour profile straight from camera?

I am totally confused after having read a host of apparently contradictory materials. If I shoor RAW images, can they already have a particular colour profile imposed on them by the camera? Does not RAW mean 'no profile before being processed by software outside the camera'?
I have a Canon Powershot G11 camera. JPEGs are always recorded with sRGB profile in this camera. But after some e-mail correspondence with the Canon technical enquiry department, they have told me that the RAW images are also recorded with sRGB profile, i.e they already have that profile as they come out of the camera and before they are processed by the Adobe DNG Converter and ACR. Can this be right?
Thanks very much in anticipation of a simple answer!

Usually cameras don't embed profiles, rather they include a simple tag in the exif data "hidden" within the raw file.  This can be used by manufacturer's software for default rendering, but has no effect upon the actual raw image data.  This is also done with jpeg output, although of course the camera has rendered the image into either sRGB or Adobe1998 depending upon the camera settings.
I generally set Photoshop to ignore exif colorspace tags (File Handling within Preferences), only want to honor a profile if is actually present.  Therefore I always set my camera to sRGB so that on the rare occasions I shoot in jpeg I won't have the wrong colorspace in use.  Of course for ACR the camera colorspace makes no difference, since the output colorspace is chosen within ACR, no attention is paid (for raw) to the exif tag.  I use ProPhoto for most work in ACR/Photoshop to avoid channel clipping.

  • Capture live from camera

    Hi guys,
I was trying to capture some footage straight from camera but it won't let me do it when I pressed the capture now button. It kept on treating the log and capture as if its capturing from tape. It was asking for the camera to be turned into vtr mode. I have done this before but I can't remember what I've done differently to make it work.
Any suggestion will be greatly appreaciated.
    Thanks guys.

You might have done it before, but never with final cut pro... try using Quicktime for live capture.
James, you sure about that? I can capture live by setting the L&C window to a non-controllable device and hitting capture now. That way FCP is not looking for something like a VTR to control, it just accepts whatever signal is present on the FW bus.

  • How can I put selected pictures from camera roll into a seperate album removing them completly from camera roll??

Im gunna be straight up honest here.. I have some rude pictures of my girlfriend on my iphone which I would like to keep for my own personal viewing but obviously dont want family and friends seeing when they are flicking threw my camera album which often happens. I had intended to make a private album put them all in there and put a passcode on the album. With all of apples features I would of thought this would be a standard thing you could do, however when I made the private album the pictures were still in my camera roll and if I try to delete them I am told the pictures will be removed completly from my phone.. This is stupid. What is the point in being able to make albums if the pictures are going to still all be in the camera roll!? Does anybody know of a way I can move pictures from camera roll to a private album?? Any help would be much appreciated.

Photos placed in a user created album or in an existing album are not copied/duplicated. The photos placed in an album include a pointer to the original photos stored in the Camera Roll. Having an album for select photos is for viewing the select photos only without having to see all photos in the Camera Roll.
The same applies to albums transferred from your computer. All photos transferred from your computer are stored in the Photo Library. Photos on the albums below include a pointer to the original photos stored in the Photo Library. The photos appear as they are duplicated when they are not. This way you can view the photos in an album only by selecting the album, or all photos on the Photo Library or Camera Roll by selecting it.

  • Error message when donloading images from camera....?!?!?

I have been trying to import images from my Canon Rebel digital camera and am having some issues. I was having trouble with iPhoto which is why I purchased this great program. At first, the images were downloading fast and furious with Aperture but now I am having some of the same issues that I was having with iPhoto. It is taking forever and a day to import my RAW images and now I am getting an error message with almost all of my photos. It stalls out on them (and the red light stops flashing on my camera as if they aren't communicating) and then I get the message that there was "a problem downloading that image" and this error code: (ICA download error -609).
    This is extremely frustrating!! HELP!

You're loading straight off the camera?
Be sure the camera isn't shutting itself off in the middle of the transfer. It may auto-turn-off after a minute.
I'd really suggest you use a card reader. You can get a USB2 CF reader which will be 10x faster than direct camera download for like $20. I can't fathom why anyone would use direct-from-camera in lieu of a reader, unless they were doing tethered shooting.

  • Wireless transfer of photos from camera to Macbook Pro (help)

Im sorry if this might not be the correct place to ask about it but Im going to give it a try.
I know this can be done because professionals are doing it across the globe already.
I just purchased a Canon 50D along with a WFT-E3A wireless transmitter. I shoot professional Lacrosse in Chicago and for the first time will be trying out the possibility of sending photos straight from my camera to my new Macbook Pro. If this works then my next purchase is going to be the WFT-E2 and a Canon 1D MK III to complete the process.
The main idea is that I will be doing shooting all over the arena and just sending them back to my laptop and having my assistant taking care of post processing of them and then uploading to a website.
But now comes the fun part.
Because this is one step above me setting up a normal wireless network like I have at home for me to get onto the internet. I don't really know where to start on setting up a specific network and configuring it to just have the camera and computer "talk" to each other.
My thoughts are that I would like to have one specific network setup for my laptop at the games when shooting. And then just bring it back home and switch it back over to the normal network I have set up to get my internet wirelessly.
I have been talking with several Genius people here in Madison and was told there are two types of networks to set up, Ad Hoc and Infrastructure.
I have been told to set it up an infrastructure network because this is going to give me widest range for me to be further away from my computer.
The question that is puzzling most of the Genius people and myself is this. Should I have one or several base stations placed somewhere in the arena between me and the computer helping me out so I don't lose signal between the two devices?
If that is the case how would I set up the base station in order to relay or transmit the signal from my laptop to my camera?
After I get this portion all set up I think it isn't going to be an issue of getting the camera to talk with my laptop. But that is another issue that I will need to pose to other photographers or maybe a canon rep directly.
    Ok Im all ears now!
    Thanks,
    Ross

There is more than one date that can be associated with an image, and I think you're running into different programs displaying different dates. This is not a comprehensive list but:
Capture date: Date and time the photo was recorded by the camera clock, stored in EXIF camera data.
Created date: Date and time the photo was first saved to disk by photo software on a computer
Modified date: Date and time the edited photo was last saved to disk by photo software on a computer
Archived date: I'm not really sure but I see this in detailed photo information too.
Furthermore, these dates can be stored in various additional date fields in other IPTC metadata sections, and various software might not write or read them in the same ways as other software.
But what I think is going on in your case is that the iPhoto Info panel is displaying the Capture Date from the camera recorded EXIF data, but what you see in the Finder are the Created and Modified dates.
If I'm right, then LexSchellings' column suggestion may not work because all you would get is the File Created date, not the camera recorded Capture Date. I do not know of a way to display camera EXIF capture date in the Finder. Generally, organizing photos using that data is done using a photo management app like iPhoto, Picasa, Apple Aperture, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Bridge, Media Pro, etc., not on the desktop.
If you were able to view the Capture Date in Windows Explorer, then that's an advantage that Windows Explorer (the desktop) had over the Finder. I've seen other cases where the Finder couldn't do something Windows Explorer could, so I wouldn't be surprised.
As far as the duplicates, I don't really know but I did a search at macupdate.com and you might want to check some of these utilities that can help resolve duplicates.
    MacUpdate search on "duplicate photo"
macupdate.com is a great place to look for Mac software if you didn't find it in the Mac App Store.

Detail.  I Attach my camera and the fields where the photos usually show up are empty and at the top of the screen it says all photos from camera are downloaded. But they are not. They can't be.
I fixed the problem somewhat myself by removing the miniSD and manually inserting it. It did not populate automatically. I had to open iPhoto and then it populated only the most recent photos I had taken which fortunately were the only ones I need. No error messages this seems to be a new occurrence.
Is there a way to just turn iPhoto off and download my photos to the folder of my own choosing?

Sure - in the iPhoto prefercences set action when a camera is ocnnected to Image Capture

  • Does iPhoto automatically edit my images straight from sd card BEFORE I import to iPhoto and edit myself?

HI, Hope you can help with my query.  Does iPhoto automatically edit my images straight from my sd card BEFORE I import to iPhoto and edit myself?

My Photography teacher told me yesterday morning that my 'images levels ‘ are being changed by my iPhoto.
Just a couple of long shots, but there is an ever-so-slight possibility that what s/he's seeing is the result of changing the colour profile of the images? Adobe RGB to sRGB for instance? That would - or could - make the images seem a little different.
And, of course, if the images are Raws then there could also be a significant difference between the preview rendered in camera and the one rendered by iPhoto.
But in neither case would this mean the image has been edited in any way.
    Regards to Kildare.

  • Not all images uploading from camera..

When I upload images from my camera it will load some of them and then it acts like upload is complete.   I have to hit upload several times to get a session uploaded that was shot all at the same time, anyone know what may cause this ?  I didnt realize it did this and it just cost me a session that I have to reshoot now bc I thought all the images were uploaded but they werent.

Hi Michael sorry for your troubles - a really irritating issue to have!
This is usually a hardware issue.
You don't mention how you are downloading images.
In general most folks would strongly recommend not downloading straight from the camera because of the number of issues that occur.
If you are using a card-reader then it is likely that it is still a hardware issue.
It may be the card reader, the USB cable, or the USB controller (rarer but still possible).
If there is more to this let us know!

  • Will import from camera but not HD???

I have a samsung TL34HD digital camera, and it takes movies in h.264. If i import movies straight from the camera it will import it fine, but if i copy to the hd THEN import, it will show up blank in the library. Thoughts?

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
Your h264 video files may not be in a format which imovie uses. Videos imported this way need to be in a format the camera supports. If however imovie recognises a camera or a camera archive it will carry out the appropriate conversion for you. You may need to copy the file/folder system from the camera rather than just the files.
