Straighten bent aluminum macbook pro case

Hi there,
Basically, we dropped the macbook on the back left corner (by the power adapter) and bent the case. The bend is right at the ethernet port.
The computer works fine, but I'm concerned about the slight rubbing of the display against the body (when you open and close it). So I looked into a new upper bottom body but for $299 I thought, heck, its aluminum, maybe I can follow the directions (ifixit.com) and straighten out the bent parts.
Yes, I know it voids everything but it's the cheapest way to go (free except for tools) and seems reasonable.
Has anyone had any success in straightening out a bent Macbook case? Any tips/suggestions?
Thanks

You voided your warranty when you dropped the machine, so you can't void it any farther by trying to bend it back. You'll never make it look right, but you may be able to eliminate or reduce the rubbing that concerns you.

  • Late 2008 aluminum Macbook Pro (15in 2.4GHz) using 8GB of RAM

    Hi everyone,
I have a quick question to ask, What I'd like to know is why the Late 2008 aluminum Macbook Pro motherboard has a chipset (Nvidia) that can support up to 8GB of RAM but Apple are stating that the system can do only 4GB?
According to NVidia, The motherboard is fully capable of using 8GB of RAM but has been limited to 4GB by Apple and that this can be resolved by a simple EFI update.
The links below show a well known Apple parts dealer running tests on the system using 8GB RAM and claims that the OS X can read it perfectly but the programs will not use more then 4GB of the RAM.
I really don't understand why Apple would limit the system to use only 4GB of RAM and if Apple have any plans on releasing an EFI update.
    Thanks for reading guys

Economics 101: So if you want 8GB, you have to go buy a new MBP and pay another grand for the memory. After all, they are in the hardware business, right?

  • What's your favorite MacBook Pro case?

What’s your favorite 15” MacBook Pro case? I am looking for something small that will safely hold the 15” Macbook Pro and some accessory’s such as a mouse and AC adapter.

    Bag n’ Tag It
    by: Digital Dude
In today’s world of everything slim and integrated, more techno fanatics and Spartan travelers are embracing the minimalist approach. To that end, I was looking for an alternative to my bulky computer briefcase for travel. So, I ordered the “Buzz” by Tom Bihn.
Initially, I was a bit skeptical since the price of the Buzz is rather high for a nylon bag in today’s crowded market. Fortunately, the folks at Tom Bihn have an excellent guarantee with great customer service. If you receive the bag, and it’s not what you expected, simply return it without having to request an authorization. Try that with any other bag manufacturer!
    Exterior:
My first impression after opening the box was that the Buzz is in fact, a very well made nylon sling-bag with attractive accents. The initial fit on the back and shoulder was comfortable, and the crossover strap is wide and it fits guys and gals without interference. It’s also nicely padded and has a large durable quick disconnect fastener below your left rib area. There is a smaller adjustable waist strap for a more secure and balanced fit. I found it wasn’t necessary for casual carry although quite useful when riding a bike or running to catch that flight.
    Interior:
The Buzz has two main compartments with waterproof zippers that don’t snag and they seal very well.
The main compartment houses a unique padded panel with a fitted corner, similar to a fitted bed sheet that stretches over one corner of the MacBook Pro. The space between the computer holder and the zippered panel provides room for a book, magazines, documents, or even a small travel neck pillow.
The second zippered compartment is on the very back and is slightly smaller or stepped down from the main compartment. It includes the usual key strap and some angled stitched pockets for pens, business cards and one larger pocket that can hold a Passport or airline tickets, etc.
The third compartment is on the exterior right side and is made of elastic material and is designed to hold a bottle, small umbrella or equivalent. It also has two pull straps to further secure its contents.
Finally, there is a super convenient compartment in the center of the crossover strap with a Velcro closure. This is my favorite feature, since it holds your cell, iPod or more notably, the new iPhone securely across your chest.
    Field Tests:
I harnessed the Buzz, adjusted the straps and wore it for a week in and around town. The Buzz and its sling design holds' the 15-inch MacBook Pro, cables, charger, etc. in a vertical orientation on the back. This permits full range of motion for both arms, unlike most soft-sided computer briefcases.
At times, I wanted to shift the load, so I simply reached around with my left hand and lifted up slightly on the bottom as I grabbed the ferry-loop (top strap) with my right hand. In this manner, you can easily adjust the tension on the crossover strap.
The Buzz shoulder bag is advertised as offering “moderate” protection, although it’s quite adequate for most common travel activities. However, I wanted to see if I could fit my MacBook Pro while stuffed in the Tucano “Second Skin” sleeve. To my delight, it fit nearly perfect as though it was made for “The Buzz”. This combination effectively increases the travel protection by at least 2:1.
    Wish List:
Accessory provisions or lack thereof, is a shortfall with many bag manufactures. User’s end up stuffing their charger, cables and adapters into secondary bags which all end up at the bottom, resulting in disorganized clutter. I visualize a removable fitted panel with separate compartments or straps that hold a basic array of typical computing items. In fact, I ended up using one of my luggage toiletry panels to help organize my computer gear in the Buzz. It holds everything vertically and eliminated the pile at the bottom.
After field-testing, I decided this bag was definitely a keeper’. However, I would prefer a tighter fit of the MacBook Pro or a matching sleeve. I would also favor a more contoured and softer crossover strap with an exterior I.D. card and pen/pencil slot. Since I’m dreaming here, how about a less abrasive backside for improved comfort.
    Conclusion:
The Buzz sling bag is a well-made, lightweight, ergonomic alternative to a backpack or the horizontal briefcase design. It holds most everything one might need for mobile computing while providing an excellent provision for Apple’s new iPhone.
    Regards,
    ~DD

  • Macbook Pro Case Very Flimsey

Recently I have noticed mysterious deformities to my macbook pro case. I have a 15" and in the 4 months that I have had it I have never dropped it but dents are started to appear in different places around the case. I always carry it in a case to protect it and I am very careful around so I have no idea what could be causing these dents and it is very frustrating. I was wondering if apple would be able to fix it or if they would be willing to exchange the computer because maybe its my particular case. Alright thanks for any help if you can provide it.

    Hey LongPole,
Are you using a laptop bag? One that has it's own padded compartment? That is really what you need. I wouldn't just put it in with books. Either buy a sleeve or a bag with a compartment.

  • 115vac felt on my macbook pro case during charging

During charging of my new Macbook pro , a " tingle " is felt on the Macbook pro case. I am using a 3 prong power strip that has a ground led installed on the device and is "showing green" when plugged into the wall socket so I know the power strip is working properly. The power adapter for the Macbook pro is " two prong " device and has a " floating Ground " My XPS dell had the same problem and dell sent me a " 3 prong " power adapter which fixed the problem.
Please advise if Apple sells a " 3 prong adapter " to correct this issue.
    -- Joe M

No damage. When opening the computer to change memory cards it is recommended that you touch anything metal on the case to discharge any static on your body. Obviously Apple wouldn't recommend this if it was at all likely to cause damage. However, extraneous charges on the actual chips, circuitry, etc can cause damage. These are all insulated from the chassis itself and things such as HD casing.

Anyone Have any Ideas about where to find one?

  • How easy does the MacBook Pro case bend?

    Hello All,
I've been waiting for the problems with the MacBook Pro to slow down before I purchase one. But, I've recently read numerous stories (on this and other forums) about the case bending in various places.
From what I have read, it sounds like the aluminum case has weak spots and will bend with little pressure.
The complaints I have read indicated that the area around the CD-ROM drive may bend slightly where you rest your palms while typing.
It sounds like the bends are usually minor, but occasionally more severe.
    My question is:
Is this something that is fairly common?
Is this just one of the issues that people don't complain about much since it is mostly cosmetic?
I have never owned one of the Aluminum Mac Portables. So, I can't judge this for myself. And, I'm not particularly sure that the local dealer would let me flex on the computer a bit to see if it would bend.
The iBook we have is plastic. So, that obviously wouldn't have the same potential.
I guess I am just asking what everyone's experience is with this. It would be helpful to me to determine whether this is a machine that I should continue considering (once the bugs are worked-out) or if I should stick with a plastic machine like the iBook when the new models come out.
I imagine that both PowerBook and MacBook Pro owners would be able to comment on the potential for the aluminum case to bend.
Thank you in advance for your answers and experience.

So it is very stiff then?
I guess I got the impression that over time the panel would bend slightly from resting your hands on it.
I am wanting something that is very durable, and won't become easily damaged when I finally purchase another computer.
Some people have mentioned that it bent slightly, or that the edges of the CD-ROM drive could make an impression on the case from the weight of your hands resting on the case (or maybe with a little pressure).
So, I was concerned that this might be something that I should consider when evaluating which machine I should get as my next computer.
I should add that I do also have a young daughter that will sometime use the computer to play with her programs and such.
So, structural strength is very important.
I am generally not concerned with out current machines because the keyboards are very solid (especially with the Mac Mini and iMac G3).
But, with a machine that has the keyboard and palm-rest built-in, I would be concerned that it might be easily damaged if the material is not strong enough.

  • Dented MacBook Pro case and lid

The top right corner of the lid and bottom right corner of the base of the late 2008 macbook pro are slightly dented. I've had my Macbook Pro for about 3 weeks now and just got round to opening it last week and after further inspection this past week I've noticed today the lid and base has a small dent in it. Looking at the corners i can see clearly they're not rounded the same and the base corner is grazed and lighter colour of aluminum.
I've kept my mbp in the box for 3 weeks even this past week when ive been using it, its never been out the house and i've been working on it at my desk away from me damaging it. So I have received the product like this.
I rang up AppleCare and they said to take it to a local repair centre, which is 30 miles away, ill be going there on Monday.
Has anyone found any dents on their macbook pros?
I have AppleCare that I paid for at the time of the laptop purchase.
What will Apple do? Will they replace it? Since its dented..and the new casing technology...it'll be pretty difficult and time consuming to just replace the case dont you think ?
What do you think they do, and what normally happens in this situation anybody know?
How long do you think the repair will take?
I don't expect to pay the amount of money I have done for this for it to come with these problems. First day i opened it i noticed greasy finger prints and marks on keyboard, i used the cloth included to get rid of these, but just noticing this dent, its really annoyed me. My came straight from the factory I think, I ordered it the day they were released, about an hour after I recall and waited a couple of weeks for it to be delivered. Now this...
Thanks for any responses in advance.

I have a tiny pinhole dent on my late '08 Mac on the top of the lid in between the apple logo and the edge (also purchased near rls date). I'm not sure if it was there when I purchased, but I don't think so. However, I'm suffering from cognitive dissonance as I treat this think like a baby. It really aggravates me... I've tried to pop it out (rather miserably) with a suction cup to no avail. What recourse do you think I'd have with Apple. I'd definitely like to get it fixed. These new aluminum body macs are far too prone to denting, because if I caused the dent, it wansn't from any overt action... I haven't even taken the thing outside since I've had it... sits on a computer desk at all times. HELP, I must have OCD because it bugs me to look at!
I also think these books heat up way too much as my cpu hovers at near 80F (~78) when under full load, according to iStat, but that's another story.

  • Bent Unibody MacBook Pro

So we've got a Unibody MacBook pro that fell off a bed and the case is bent in the lower right hand corner (not the lid). The computer still functions perfectly but it can't be closed. The local apple authorized store quoted us $1000 to do the repair- which isn't a very good use of $1000. Does anyone know of anywhere that the notebook could be sent to do this repair cheaper, or if it's possible to get the part and do it myself? Any advise would be great.
    Thanks!

  • Corrosion/Pitting in Macbook Pro Case

    Hi All,
It would appear that I have some corrosion/pitting occurring where I rest my palms on my Macbook Pro. Initially, I thought it was dirt or some residue, but after cleaning I noticed it was untouched. Further examination (with a 10x loupe) showed that they are indeed pits forming small cavities in the surface. Keep in mind, I wear no jewelry/watches, and work in a laboratory so my hands stay very clean. It would seem that there is some sort of chemical reaction pitting the surface.
Have any of you noticed this unsightly wear on your computers? Is it covered under AppleCare? Is there something I can do short of wearing gloves while I type?
Below are two (large) images of what I'm talking about. They were taken with Super-macro mode on my camera. I can take pictures through the lens of the loupe tomorrow when there's sufficient light.

    Thank you for your replies,
    Kris Olson

This issue has come up from time to time, and the consensus seems to be that it is caused by a few individuals' body chemistry reacting with the aluminum and causing the pitting. Other than wearing gloves, you could use something like a Marware protection pack, which has a piece that covers the palm rests.

  • Is is okay to clean an aluminum MacBook Pro with alcohol?

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro 13-inch (aluminum), and I am wondering if it is okay to clean everywhere other than the screen (top, bottom, around and on the keyboard, around the ports) with a 70% alcohol wipe.
Also, I am currently away from my home and I forgot to bring the black microfiber cloth that came with the mac, so that does not apply.
    Thank you in advance!

I'm sorry, there's some OK stuff in that thread, but there's also some arrant nonsense.
    > Alcohol is not good for LCD screens. Technically it is
    > considered a solvent.
Really?! Alcohol is a solvent? Wow! Well, hold on to your hats, folks. This will give you a shock. Do you know what else is a solvent? Water. Yeah, plain water. In fact, any liquid cleaning agent you're likely to use is a solvent, otherwise it would be no use for cleaning.
As to alcohol not being "good for LCD screens" -- what then about vendors who recommended a solution of 50% isopropylic alcohol in water for cleaning their screens? (Including Apple for some of its old notebooks -- see the PowerBook G3 Firewire user manual.)
The fact is that there is only one blanket, one-size-fits-all "solution" -- RTFM (Read The Friendly Manual)!
Read carefully the cleaning instructions in your laptop or LCD monitor manual and follow them. What you should use to clean the LCD screen depends on what type of coatings were added to it during manufacture, and you're not likely to know that. My very old Toshiba Satellite says, "You can use glass cleaner on the display" -- and glass cleaners contain ammonia! My not so old Fujitsu Lifebook says I should use Klear Screen wipes -- and Klear Screen is 99% water. And my Early 2011 MBP says, "dampen the included cleaning cloth with just water". When in doubt, use distilled water, because that's the mildest solvent, and hence least likely to do any harm. But that doesn't mean is the best suited for that particular LCD screen.

  • MacBook Pro Case

After owning iPhones, iPads and Minis for several years, I finally broke down and ordered a MacBook Pro.  However, I would like to get a case to protect it when I am using it.  I do like the personalization the hard cases provide, but I have read many reviews that say most don't last 12 months.  Are there any recommendations?

I use these for a 15-inch and 13-in rMBP and a 13-in MBP. Hardshell cases seem to break at edges and stress points. I have both Black and White.
The colors are definitely limited. I wrote to Tech21 for additional colors and they said they would consider it based on other requests.
You can try different brands within their respective return window to get a better feel before you choose.
