Straighten tool. Any way to throttle it down?

I'm finding the straighten tool to be problematic. Very sensitive to my mouse movements. And, because my mouse is not perfectly clean and that my fingers are a little shaky, I'm having trouble being precise with the straighten tool. Any way to get this to work easier for me?

If I click on the photo, then drag the mouse to the edge of the screen before starting the lateral movements then the adjustment is far less aggressive than if I click and drag laterally near the center of the photo. Getting a tenth degree adjustment is easy using this method. It's like spinning a tire by grabbing farther out on the spokes--it takes more lateral movement of the spoke to get less radial movement of the tire.

10.3 - any way to throttle connection attempts?

An elderly friend has a mac running 10.3 on an ADSL link. She's seeing many thousands of ssh login attempts per day, sufficient to eat significantly into her monthly download allowance (the isp charges for traffic, whether there is a successful connection or not). I'm wondering if there is any way to throttle connection attempts back? I.e. I know it is possible to set up iptables that way, but is there any front end for this, or does one have to build the iptables by hand?

Yes, she does need to allow ssh connections (I use ssh to maintain her machine, from a distance of about 10,000 km - not always easy). Of course, this means that I can't risk anything that might disable the ssh connection, since I then wouldn't be able to recover it.
I need to explain that security isn't an issue - the ssh setup is secure, and no attempted breakins have succeeded (only one account is accessible by ssh, and that one has a very secure password). The problem is purely the bandwidth that is being used by the unsuccessful login attempts: I'd like to find a way to simply drop these illicit connection attempts at the firewall (which means they will cost just the 80B or so of the initial connection message) rather than, as now, refuse the ssh connection (which typically costs 2K-4K because of the handshaking that goes on). With 10K illicit connection attempts per day now becoming typical on this network, that's a very substantial bandwidth saving.
Changing the ssh port might do the job, but it looks like a fair amount of work. I'll try it on the weekend.

Any way to throttle photo upload?

After upgrading to 10.10.3 and Photos, it seems that the upload of my library to iCloud is consuming all of my available bandwidth, to the point where my Mac and any other device in my house has become unusable. In Activity Monitor, nurlsessiond is at the top of the list with about 1000x the sent packet rate of the next highest process.
With 400 GB of pictures to upload, am I going to have to live with this for the next week or is there a way I can slow down the upload rate, even if it means my library will take longer to upload?

This is geeky but seems to work: Use Apple's Network Link Conditioner (NLC) to limit the upload speed from your computer.
Download the NLC system preference from the Apple Developer's site. It is part of the Hardware IO Tools.
Install the NLC system preference.
Open the NLC system preference and create a new profile.
Limit the Uplink speed. I chose about 60% of my available uplink bandwidth and that seems to work OK.
Set the Downlink limit to something at least close to your ISP's bandwidth or above.
You'll probably need to play around with the limits. Remember that it affects all of the network traffic in and out of the computer so something like a Time Capsule backup might go really, really slowly.

I left my macbook on my desk and it was in sleep mode, the screen was shut and when i came back from my friend's house it was stolen, somebody walked into my apartment and just took my laptop. Luckily i setted up a password so that everytime they open up the screen it requires a password. Is there any way to track down my macbook pro? it's the early 2011 kind. I don't remember setting up track my mac on the icloud, is there any other way of tracking it down? Like serial number or something? I already reported it to the police but im not sure if they're gonna do anything about it. All my school work is on my macbook and I just feel so hopeless and I just want it back.

Reporting it to the police is really the only thing that your can do. A smart thief will be able to bypass your password so I suggest that you change all of your passwords on all of you accounts - starting with your Apple ID, bank accounts, credit card companies, etc.
If you'd had the iCloud "Find My Mac" enabled you might have been able to track it down if the thied went online - but even then, a smart thief could bypass that.
Were you insured? A replacement is about the best you can hope for...

Project Server 2010 - Once individual settings are changed is there any way to save this down for each person

A timesheet submitter sets certain filters and "group by", the timesheet is then sorted according to those filters and groups. Once time sheet is saved & Submitted the filters/groups are changed back to the default for any subsequent time
reporting periods. Is there any way to predetermine the Filter=No filter and Group by=Project for all timeperiods.

For specific users not possible, however if you know many people use Timesheet in a specific way you might want to consider generic timesheet view which users can choose.

Any way to throttle abusers?

Question: Is there any setting or add-in for the Java System Web Server which restricts abusers accessing the website every few seconds?
Longer explanation: One important (to me) feature I haven't found in the Java Web Server is the ability to throttle users who are abusing the website, but accessing it less than once per second. I know there is a built-in ability to block access that is greater than 1 per second, but that's not enough for what I need. We can have bots causing problems scraping a server every 2-3 seconds.
I checked into this about a year ago, but didn't find any solutions. I'm hoping there is something available now.

In the earlier topic you indicate that you're hoping to get similar behavior as mod_bwshare. This looks remarkably like the capabilities of Web Server's Quality of Service (QOS) feature. This allows you to average out the amount of bandwidth for a client over up to 3600 seconds and throttle the traffic based on that average.
The QOS docs seem pretty difficult to find, but so far I've found some helpful stuff in the CLI (wadm) book and in the Admin Config File Reference (somewhere around page 77).
The NSAPI Programmer's guide provides examples of how to write SAFs that take advantage of the QOS stats and take action based on them (page 60).
Please do share what (if anything) you come up with. I'm curious about the solution you find that works for you.

Audio on audiobooks is distorted (too fast). Any way to slow it down?)

After installin iOS5.0 I downloaded several audiobooks from Audible.com and noted that the audio was too fast. Previously installed books were fine. The distorted books play fine on my iPhone 3GS and on the iTunes on my laptop. Deleted the "bad"audiobooks and reinstalled - same problem. Restored the software - no change. Updated the iOS to 5.0.1 and no change. Any ideas?

i'm trying to note down times of changes in the music for an animation i'm doing but am new to soundbooth - is there any way of simply slowing down the music file i have to note these down easier?

PDF File Size - any way to compress further?

We have are using the Crystal for .NET export method to export a report to a .pdf file, and are having an issue with the pdf file size on a report that contains images. The images are stored in a SQL2005 database as blob or varbinary(max). The report executes a stored procedure that selects data (including images) to produce a quotation. There are input parms to decide which images to print (for example A, B or both A&B). Both types of images can appear at the line level on the quotation. Type A images print in the main report, Type B images are in a subreport. Both the main report & subreport execute a stored procedure to select an image type.
Our issue, when both Type A and B image is selected to print on a 293 line quote. The PDF file size is 44.23MB
When Type A only is selected, the PDF file size is 2.64MB
When Type B only is selected, the PFD file size is 43.95MB.
There are more Type B images that would print at the line level than Type A, but is there any way to compress this down further as it is too large to email.

You mention that you are using Crystal for .NET, but not what version; CR for .NET 2003, 2005, 2008. 2010?
Applying the latest fixes for the correct version of CR would be the first thing to do.
Next, I'd have a close look at image B as it appears to be the one adding the most "bulk". How is this image different from image A?
General tips re. images:
Save the files a BMPs.
When .jpg image is inserted into Crystal Reports it is converted into bitmap format and as the result of the conversion the report may loose some quality, scale and other issues may arise... E.g.; Crystal Reports is not so good a graphics management tool
When an image is saved as a .bmp, then there is no conversion required and thus the quality of the image should be preserved.
Best practice: save the image with high resolution and required size as a .bmp format then insert this image into Crystal Reports.
Resize the image to the smallest possible size and downgrade the DPI to 72. This will ensure your image is as small as possible and Crystal Reports will have to put in the least amount of work to display it.

This KB, may apply to your version of CR, or not. In any case, you will have to use the KB as a guide and determine what the appropriate registry entry would be for your version of CR.
One more thing. Many people like to use jpg files as they are smaller than bmp files. However, as far as Crystal Reports is concerned, this is inconsequential. The report file will be the same size if a file is inserted as a jpg or a bmp. This is due to the jpg conversion to bmp Crystal Reports does internally.

Win XP ID5.5 export to epub crash in hyperlinks.rpln any way to trace?

Any way to pin this down to the problem link? I've converted any link with an & or # into a tinyurl, and still get a failure when exporting to epub. ##update## I also tried exporting to html and got the identical error - same mod & offset. I would be happy if I could just turn off any url conversion and get an epub where I could edit it manually. ##
By cutting my 300 page book (1 document) down by half for each test, I got to a 6 page doc that still failed. At that point 1 link had a & - I deleted that link and export worked. I changed the & to X and export failed even though link was invalid. I replaced with tinyurl, and export worked. However, when I go back and change original doc so it has no urls with & or # I still get the same failure. There must be a faster way of finding the problem than my way of dividing the doc. That takes hours to find a single error (It takes me about 5 min to recycle ID after crash). This is the Dr. Watson log of one crash:

After narrowing down to a test list of 4 urls, I was able to find at least one cause of the problem. I had 3 working urls, and one that would cause ID to crash in hyperlink.rpln. I found the problem by looking at the text with story editor. The problem url was surrounded by hyperlink cross reference symbols.
Would paste output, but again am getting black square when I click insert image.

Is there any way to speed up a voicemail message once you've slowed it down?

On voicemail playback you can slow the voicemail down by selecting 4 while it's playing. I've yet to find a way to speed it back up. Is there any way to do this? We have CUC 9.0.

It depends on your key maps if you have one configured however if I remember right, pressing 6 will speed up the voicemail.

We have exported some IT Resources and when we imported them in the preproduction environment their data was not migrated. Is there any way to export IT Resource data from OIM using the export tool? Or is there any other way to do this without doing it by hand?

I have a late 2008 iMac with dual intels and the fans won't come on anymore. About every 1 1/2 hours, it automatically shuts down to cool off. Is there any way to manually turn it on? Or, do they have to be replaced?

I tried that with no improvement. I think I might have to have the fans replaced. do you know if this is a particularly difficult procedure? Something wierd that I've noticed is that if I have a video on for more than several minutes, the fans comes on, and also when I am on a Skype video conference for awhile. Otherwise, the fan jst doen't come on as the intels heaten up to the point the the auto shut down kicks in...any advise? This definitely interupts my work! Thanks for your help and input thus far!
