Straightening algorithm change in A3 update?
I was playing around with some old photos in Aperture today and noticed some weirdness. First some background. The photos were taken with my old Digital Rebel and are jpegs imported into Aperture. I imported them some time ago, probably Aperture 2. At that time I did some adjusting and was reasonably happy with the results. Today I was browsing through them looking for photos that might be suitable for converting to B&W and noticed that quite a few of them had a strange pattern across the bottom.
The pattern appears as vertical anomalies on the bottom, which is more pronounced towards the side. A bit hard to describe, but it looks like the bottom pixel was turned into a short vertical line, with each pixel along the bottom of the photo doing this. The original jpeg is fine - no weirdness at all. In order to get rid of the anomaly I had to "revert to original" at which time the problem went away (together with any edits I made, of course).
I did some nosing around and it turned out that every one that I had applied the straighten tool to had the problem. In fact, the more the straightening angle, the worse the artifacts. In the artifact, the length of the vertical "line" depends on the angle of the straightening and the all the lines form a 'wedge' along the bottom of the photo, showing how much I had rotated the photo. Unchecking and the re-checking the straighten brick cleared the problem and restored the straightened picture. I looked some more, and the same problem exists with the 50D raw photos, so it doesn't appear to be due to being jpeg. Ditto for managed vs. referenced - same problem. The only other thing of note is that I upgraded the video card to a 5770 a few months ago, but it's hard to believe that caused it.
Last try was to first repair and then rebuild the Aperture library, neither of which made any difference (straightened photos still showed the anomaly).
So, my conclusion is that the straightening algorithm in Aperture changed at one point and the problem with earlier straightened photos is a reflection (so to speak) of that change. I'm not sure which version changed things, but at sometime on or after A3 the problem appeared. Anyone else seen this? Easily corrected, albeit a bit laborious with all the manual labor involved, but also bit irritating since there doesn't appear to be a way to tell Aperture to 'uncheck and recheck any straightened photos'.
- Ken
Thanks for both of the suggestions, but neither one worked - no change to the previews. I went through the library, and everything taken on or before August, 2009 showed the artifacts, while photos taken on or after May, 2010 are OK (the interim period either had no photos or no straightening).
I'm pretty good about loading and processing pictures once I take them, and I also update Aperture fairly soon after a new release comes out. The data suggests that there was a change in Aperture that occurred between 8/2009 and 5/2010 that brought out the issue. I would never have known it except that I went back to some earlier photos to use them, which was when I found the problem. I can't imagine that it's anything I did to cause the problem, especially since the photos with the problem were fine when I initially worked on them.

Is there a way to change the Windows Update service startup type on Windows Server 2012 R2?
We have a number of newly built 2012 R2 servers that we have HP Operations Manager agent running on that monitors the status of several services and reports if they are "stopped". One of these services is Windows Update. Every day we
get at least one alert saying:
"Service "Windows Update" is not started. Current state is stopped"
Checking the event logs shows that the Windows Update service stops, then a while later it just starts again. Not an error, just an information event.
In Windows 2012 R2 the Windows Update service is set to "Automatic (Trigger Start)", where in previous versions we run (2012/2008R2) it would be set to just "Automatic" or "Automatic (Delayed Start)"
I have come to understand that this behaviour is normal for Windows 2012 R2, and that Trigger Start services by design stop themselves after a period of inactivity. I was unable to find any info on how this works. Our client would like this to
be changed and the Windows Update service stay running all the time, understanding that this impacts performance.
Is there a way to change the Windows Update service in Server 2012 R2 to the old Automatic startup behaviour so that it stays running all the time instead of stopping and starting periodicall? There is no option to do this via the services mmc
gui.
So far I have tried:
Removing the Triggers using the command: sc triggerinfo wuauserv delete
This works temporarily, the service then shows as just Automatic in the services console, however if you restart the server or restart the service it goes right back to being Automatic (Trigger Start).
Any kind of help would be appreciated.This one might help.

Why do my photo dates change she Facebook updates an album?
When I click on a FaceBook album in Aperture. The little clock thing goes around and around then when it is done all the photos in that album have a date of waht the current date/time is. It makes all them pics out of order when looking ato photos. I don't want this. I want the dates to remain the original. I have no way of knowing waht the original date and time was now! Very frustrating.
BTW, the title should be Why do my photo date's change when facebbok updates an album?

Ken burns cropping in iMovie 9.09 changed with mavericks update. Cant zoom in to a small area....it limits the size now. How do i get back to the old way
These timezone definition changes are fairly common, when viewed world-wide.
For notifying Apple, contact the folks at the Apple Support Center or (if you have access) log a bug report. (The folks at Apple might or might not notice any postings made here.)
For the immediate case, updating the timezones yourself is straightforward; the sequence is basically the same on Linux, OS X, Unix and even OpenVMS. Ugly, but it works. (The US folks got to see this mess first-hand a few years ago, but there are other locations that see these sorts of timezone definition changes far more often.)
For those following along that aren't familiar with this sequence, this old posting should get you close when rebuilding your definitions, though the timezone database has moved to IANA. -

InputFile Changes to show Update
I have a form with an inputFile component and a commandImageLink. However when I click the commandImageLink the inputFile (if a file is selected) changes to show "Update". I don't want any of the form to submit when I click on the commandImageLink. If I leave it in the update position, then the file upload fails with the value of the component being empty.
How can I make it so that I can click on the commandImageLink and the inputFile not change status (keep the browse... visible instead of changing to update as if the value was submitted already?).
My inputFile (bean scope = request):
<af:inputFile id="file" label="#{bundle.file}" required="true" value="#{singlefile.uploadedFile}" binding="#{singlefile.file}"/>
My commandImageLink (bean scope = request) is part of a declarative component:
<af:commandImageLink immediate="true" partialSubmit="true"
action="#{bean.showPicker}"
icon="#{bean.displayImage}"
binding="#{bean.browseSingle}"
shortDesc="#{bean.displayImageDesc}"
returnListener="#{bean.userPickCallback}"/>
Thank you,
KrisFrank,
Doesn't appear to be working. Here's my method on the actionListener (immediate is set to true):
Am I missing something below?
The commandImageLink is part of a declarative component while the form with the inputFile uses this component. Does this change anything?
public void showPicker(ActionEvent actionEvent) {
FacesContext context = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
// Create the dialog UIViewRoot
ViewHandler viewHandler = context.getApplication().getViewHandler();
UIViewRoot dialog = viewHandler.createView(context, "/dialogs/userGroupPickerSelect.jsp");
// SOME PARAMS AND PROPS ARE CREATED HERE
AdfFacesContext afContext = AdfFacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
afContext.launchDialog(dialog,
parameters, // parameters
(UIComponent)_browseSingle,
true, // show it in a dialog
properties); // properties for window
context.renderResponse();

What Changes to Software Update Group Causes Clients to Re-check Compliance
Hello,
I have a number of software update groups that have been deployed over the past couple of years. When Microsoft release new updates etc. some of the updates already deployed change their status e.g. an update might get marked as expired. As a result of this
I can go from having clients reporting as being compliant to a situation where they are in an unknown state until they report back again.
Does anyone know what changes to an update already deployed would cause clients to have to check their compliance status for that software update group?
Thank you.
StephenIf you are referring to the enforcement state, this is indeed specific to the deployment, not the group itself.
With regards to your question - Upon a change to your deployment, your clients will receive updated policy. On a successful evaluation of the deployment, it will re-send a state message if necessary. Unfortunately I do not know if there are certain
things that do not trigger a policy update (i.e. change in the name or description vs. update membership or deadline change) -

Issuing CA's signature algorithm changed from sha1RSA to RSASSA-PSS
Hi all,
We found the root cause of why one of our Issuing CA's all of a sudden started issuing certs with a signature algorithm of RSASSA-PSS instead of sha1RSA (the signature algorithm it was originally set up to use). Turns out one of our techs ran the following
command a few months ago on the Issuing CA while trying to get it to issue a custom Polycom device cert:
Certutil -setreg CA\csp\AlternateSignatureAlgorithm 1
After that, the Issuing CA started kicking out certs with RSASSA-PSS as the signature algorithm. I imagine the fix to get this Issuing CA back to using sha1RSA as the signature algorithm is to set that reg entry to 0 or just delete it altogether.
However, my question is, what about all the certs this Issuing CA has issued
since the signature algorithm changed? If I change it back to sha1RSA, will that somehow invalidate or cause an issue with all of the certs issued with RSASSA-PSS? That could be an issue since this CA has issued many many certs to
laptops for NPS 802.1x auth!
Any help is appreciated!
BDHi,
changing the CA signature algorithm will not invalid the existing certificates. They just stay as they are. That's why you haven't experienced any issues as your your tech made the change for RSASSA-PSS.

I don't know much about computers can anyone walk me through this ? How Do I Change The Software Update Server Address On A Client ? what do I open and how do i put it in the right spot?
The simplest method is to run a defaults command on the client Macs (easily pushed via Apple Remote Desktop):
defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL 'HTTP_URL_FOR_CATALOG'
for a user. If you run it via sudo it will set it for whenever you use softwareupdate as root.
The HTTP_URL_FOR_CATALOG has been changed with Mac OS X 10.6. If you use MCX it will automatically pick the new catalog – however if doing it manually the following URLs need to be used for whichever client version is in question:
Mac OS X 10.4: http://mysus.example.com:8088/index.sucatalog
Mac OS X 10.5: http://mysus.example.com:8088/index-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog.sucatalog
Mac OS X 10.6: http://mysus.example.com:8088/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog
Mac OS X 10.7: http://mysus.example.com:8088/index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
Mac OS X 10.8: index-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
To double check this applied you can run the following command:
/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
and /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
to see what settings are for the computer and user appropriately.
If this is working correctly when running Software Update (GUI) you should see the server address appear in parenthesis in the title of the window.
MCX
Another alternative is to use Workgroup Manager to manage the preferences via MCX from your server. This can be done for users, or for computers if they are bound to your Open Directory.
If you are using 10.5 Server or newer: you can simply use the Software Update section under Preferences.
Manually:
Choose the accounts, computers, or groups to have the preference applied to.
Click on Preferences, and then the Details tab
Press the Add… button and navigate to /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
Press Edit…
Under Often, add a New Key and enter the name CatalogURL
Make sure the type is string and then enter your SUS URL (eg. http://mysus.example.com:8088/index.sucatalog or if using 10.6: http://mysus.examle.com:8088/ – see above from the defaults section)
Press Apply Now, then Done. Once users/computers have refreshed their MCX settings (usually the next login or restart) the new settings will take over.
If this is working correctly when running Software Update (GUI) you should see the server address appear in parenthesis in the title of the window.
In order to have a system-wide configuration one has to run the following:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL "http://your.updates-server.lan:8088/index.sucatalog"
In order to correctly work both on Leopard and Snow Leopard the right command to issue is:
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL "http://your.updates-server.lan:8088/index-leopard-snowleopard.merged-1.sucatalog"
Happily used and tested on my network
The DNS trick that Chealion points out is fantastic. I use it at our office, and every computer on our LAN will automatically pull the updates from the local repository at high speed without any configuration.
Create the swscan.apple.com DNS zone on your internal DNS server, and have it resolve via an A record to your Mac
